Unhide MMS settings on Lumia Icon after Denim
AR2186 said:
Ok, I was able to get it to work using a modified version of the Windows 10TP for non-supported devices work-around. I edited the WPFlights.xml file to replace the "enable tethering" with "Unhide MMS APN". I am now up and running with on AT&T with my Lumia Icon (also tested/working on HTC One M8 for Windows from Verizon).
If you want to do this on your phone, basically follow the instructions here HOWTO: Install Windows 10 for Phones on Non-supported devices (and other hacks) but replace the WPFlights.xml with the one I have attached. One heads up, I had to install the full version of Fiddler and enable HTTPS before I could install the certificate
Warning: This could brick your phone, so use it at your own risk.
Thanks @RustyGrom r the awesome work you did on the workaround, this is a very powerful tool. Thanks @AlvinPhilemon for the help finding the registry location

Is it possible to edit the APN settings without making other registry changes? I'm not interested in forcing the Windows 10 TP, but NEED MMS to work! Thanks

Yes, I should have clarified I AM NOT running the Windows 10TP on my Lumia Icon. I only used the method for the inherited permissions so I could write to the registry.
I actually couldn't get this working in Windows 10 TP, only on Windows 8.1 on a Lumia Icon w/ 8.1.1 and an HTC One M8 with 8.1.1
Edit: I have now updated the original post for greater clarity

Thanks for the quick response! I browsed through the xml file and it appears that it makes other changes. I could be misunderstanding it.
Do I need to reset my device before applying this workaround?

No, don't reset your phone or you will lose it since it reverts back to the original OEM/Carrier settings. I left the XML basically intact except for the last part (see below) because I don't have a lot of experience (computers, and even more so xml/programming, is just a hobby of mine) and I figured it was safer to replace the "Enable Internet Tethering" option than try to add another option below and risk messing up the XML completely.
The Windows Insider App isn't all or nothing like Preview for Developers, so you can choose among a number of different options that seem to write to the registry in different locations or ways. Once you get in the app, you will have a few options. I don't believe it makes any other changes to the registry when you enable the MMS APN with my method, but if someone can find other changes than I will attempt to rewrite the method to make sure that doesn't happen.
Here is the XML that drives the registry change. Its found right at the bottom of the document, and my changes are in bold

I haven't risked updating the Windows Insider app to get it to work at the moment, waiting to see if they can figure out a workaround. That said, there is a thread in the WindowsCentral forums about getting it to work by installing and then deleting Nokia Access Point. Can't vouch for the method, but others have gotten it to work on T-Mobile.
Could anyone be more specific on how to enable those settings on Lumia Icon? I'm using it in Europe and I'm unable to use mms, so any help here is appreciated.
Cheers.

Please make sure you actually read the thread with the instructions, as it is clearly stated how to accomplish the hack. If you have further questions, please be specific.
For the Lumia Icon you need to have: A) Windows 8.1 and B) the OLD version of the Windows Insider app. You can then change the WPFlights.xml file to include the registry keys to unhide the APN. Basically you need to be able to take on write-access to the registry, and the updated Windows Insider app doesn't allow the hack to work.
For other phones with an SD card, you may be able to accomplish the same using the CustomPFD Registry Editor hack.

There is no way to get the MMS APN settings to show up unless you have the old Windows Insider app still and use the method I described. That said, people have had success getting the Icon to work on T-Mobile by hard resetting it without a SIM card in (see Windows Central Lumia Icon forums), inserting the T-Mobile SIM and setting the Internet APN settings. I imagine that could work on your M8 as well, but no guarantees obviously.
I was able to use my Verizon M8 on AT&T through the Windows Insider trick, but it was a bit finicky with SMS.
Hi,
I am a bit new here, but i really appreciate what you guys are doing. I have a question, because I do not succed in what is described here.
Indeed, I have a M8 with WP 8.1.1 (Verizon edition), but when I do the "How to install windows 10" tutorial, with or without your WPFlights.xml file, it failed at step 11: I have nothing except unauthorized, (empty screen under enroll). On the PC i do have "sending custom flighting response".
Can you help me to fix that ? Is it because I do nothave the "old" version of the app that you have mentionned ? How can I get ?
Thanks a lot !

Short question, maybe someone knows. If I want to add a new Server in MMS Configuration the [New] button is not responding.
How can I re-activate this button.
anyone, help would be appreciated.
Well... this button should be active at all times... So your best bet would be to reflash your device... Sorry man...

Yes I guessed that one, therefore I was hoping to get some "other" advises before I hard-reset and notice the same.
I would search for a cab named "Set_up_MMS_folder" in before going back that far. You already have a folder, but reinstall could help fix whatever you are missing.
Good luck.
I hope that works for you... Please give us a shout if it does, but as far as I know the MMS configuration isn't dependent on whether or not you have an MMS foldor or not. Or for that matter an MMS capable phone... It sounds to me that something messed up flashing the ROM... Witch leads to the next question, did the MMS function work at some time after flashing? Did you install any third party software after that?

No it didn't work, I was re-installing my phone. I installed my normal things, as always, like spb today etc. This time I flashed the std T-mob ROM because I was a little tired of all the small problems I had with the home-cooked and now this...........
The mms folder and everything I have, it's only the stupid button which doesn't work.....
........It's there, but even he color shows it's not active.
Im seriously starting to believe the so called gurus in here arent exactly up to snuff ....so to speak. your problem is simple... you have to browse to regedit..somehow(!! can you figure that out?)
oh, just got it:Total commander, tap the two dots in far right (..)
tap the root (\\)
tap registry/hklm/software/arcsoft/...MMSUA/CONFIG/UI/
DRUMROLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL... now YOU figure out which setting to enable!
nah, it should be EnableServerEdit ...i think, change the value to '1'
voila
THIS DOES NOT MEAN MY MMS IS WORKING...... I HAVE A PERSISTENT PROBLEM BEING UNABLE TO SEND MMS & everyone is CLUELESS!!
aaaaarghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I WANT TO DIE!!!!!!!!! lol
ifull, thanks for the advise, this did the trick. Thanks again, I'm not into registry editing.
I think my problem, as you said, was so simple that the experts thought I would figure this out by myself, LOL.
Thanks again, if I can help you in someway, please PM.
What are the right mms settings
What are the right mms settings, I did the change in the registry as listed above to allow new settings and to see what the current settings are... but can someone look to see what are the correct settings witht the oem rom for the server address..
settings
here are the settings that should be there according to tmo website - http://support.t-mobile.com/knowbase/root/public/tm21387.htm
on mine those are right but what I think the problem is this, when mms is sending it keeps getting interupted by gprs trying to connect. is there a reg hack to let mms send without being disconnected????
I believe in regedit there are some errorlog.txt files that show you the WHOLE transcription of your attempted outbound messages. If I find mine, I will post it as it shows where the delivery went wrong.
so are you trying to say your 'mms fix' of a day or so ago is not quite "fixed" or what?
re:
this whole mms thing is starting to make me feel like its a tmo network issue and not the device, just never know...but I did flash my rom to X's 2.26 w/ 2.47 radio
mms fix i think
once u hak the reg and change the setting as listed earlier to allow settings edit... click on tmobile mms settings and it should show the settings that were downloaded from tmo...but u want to change the option that says connect via mms --) to connect via data..
I just did that and it sent right away...
it works, click on the tmobile mms server and then change the connection to via data instead of mms... I just sent a message to my self and it sent it out my outbox in less than 30sec for a 75k file

hey vilem, youre welcome on the regedit server setting.. i was laughing at the time I read your reply, as I knew all too well the relief you felt!

the error logs are in

perhaps we can compare logs, mine now say
WRONG!!!! no mms date
WRONG!!!! no from address
and I think thats my problem, but dont know where to set it.

Anyone know if this would be possible. I would luv to get this phone. Am using a tytn at the moment on softbank network. Considering purchasing a Kaiser from overseas on next business trip to bring back to Tokyo and give it a whirl.
Thanks,
Theoretically it is possible as the radios and sim cards should be compatible.
However, the Softbank AP for the flat rate data plan has not been cracked. Yet. There are a few people with Treo 750s that are also interested in seeing this password revealed - as well as me. I would like to try the Libra - or perhaps even the Omni or Wings (when and if they debut) if they have the right radios.
If you don't mind paying more for data, then the expensive/slow data connection to Softbank is possible.

Here's the interesting thing. Ordered a Kaiser from UK via DHL (delivered in 3 days!) and today when I stuck in my Softbank SIM, I found that the Kaiser (TytnII) software automatically detected that I was on Softbank and automatically installed the connection settings for Softbank. I am able to surf using that auto configured connection though I cannot confirm this is the connection that uses the flat rate 3G thing. More investigation needed.
There's been tonnes of posts on how people can setup a link using software/hacks/whatever to access the flat rate software package but haven't had enough time to check it out.
At the moment, except a direct HSDPA (as indicated by the icon) internet link, there's no MMS or SMS (!) so I need to figure out why; latter might be because MMS and SMS seems to share the same mailbox now so maybe because I've not setup mms as yet, even SMS won't come in
Boy, why has everything in Japan got to be so complicated...
Auto-configured the connection huh? Cool trick. It should be easy to check.
The access point name of the flat rate connection is open.softbank.ne.jp. I believe the non-flat rate connection is [email protected] (or something like that).
You should be able to check by looking at Settings>Connections>Manage my existing connections, then select edit to view the particulars for the Softbank connection.
As far as SMS/MMS, you hit the nail right on the head. I have had troubles with the integrated SMS/MMS mailbox here in Japan with various ROMs for my Hermes. It might (big might) be possible to overwrite your SMS/MMS software with a previous verson of Arcsoft MMS that has separate mailboxes. That might (again, big might, never tried it before) free up your SMS. If that succeeds, we can get you to try installing MMSlite.

But is there a recent 2007 'how to install Japanese support' on a TyTn II?
I have read a lot and some of it is scary !!

Ofiaich - no, no, don't worry about the off-topic post.
And you don't ever need to be scared of modding your phone as long as you have a backup utility. I recommend SPB Backup, but some are fond of Sprite.
The Kaiser is a relatively new device so you are kind of flying blind. However, since both machines run WM6, many of the same packages should be viable. Let's start with the directions found in Make your X01HT a WM6 Device (for Gaijins)
Now time to have your Hermes speak Japanese
Japanese fonts
Use the excellent work from Asukal, that you can find here:
http://www.asukal.jp/WM5/LetsJapanNo5.zip
Japanese input
Not using for myself, but these work perfectly (I tried):
http://www.asukal.jp/WM5/BagojsINPUT.zip
If you prefer a Japanese input without the annoying "Floating bar", ie just the same input way as your original WM5 Softbank ROM, just downlaod and install the "MS IME31 J" link from Asukal's page:
http://hn801.hkes.com/Data/SIP/IME_31J_QVGA_F.zip
Click to collapse
I believe that these files are generic for WM5/6, and that they should work on any QVGA machine. The picture from Asukal's page shows them working on an Alpine, so they are not specific to Hermes.
The following directions however, might be specific to the Hermes, as they are registry settings for the keyboard. The above packages should actually automatically change the two HKCU registry entries below.
To map properly your Softbank Keyboard, do the following registry modifications:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Oem\Qwerty] "Layout"= 30411 (Hexadecimal base)
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\keyboard layout\Preload] "Default"= e0010411
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\keyboard layout\Preload\1] "Default"= e0010411

I purchased Kaiser.
There was environment I displayed Japanese, and to be able to beat against Japanese with Atok.
I tested SB in Kaiser with usable ConnSBM_ORE2h.zip, but Password was not formed.
I think that Password is made if I do not understand that I make ORE2cert.cab for Kaiser, and it is possible for this.
Maro,
So, let me just make sure I understand: you have a Kaiser, and that the Kaiser can read Japanese, and that you can input Japanese using third-party software called ATOK.
That is good news for our friend ofiaich.
Now, I understand you tried to install Softbank's flat rate connection set up using ConnSBM.cab, ORE2cert.cab, Out.xml, and WIFIwake.exe, all four of these files being the ones used for the Hermes. (There is also a package for Universal called ConnSBM_ORE2u.zip.)
And you say that you can make a ORE2cert.cab for Kaiser and if you do that then the password will be made?
If that is so, then that is great! But I have a feeling that you don't need a new ORE2cert.cab. The ORE2cert.cab for the Hermes and the ORE2cert.cab for the Universal seem to be the exact same file.

Ok, bit of progress. Can verify that the auto-configured connection (which works fine) is the non-flat rate connection so would strongly advise folks to be careful in using it.
Installed MMSlite and ended up having constant irritating reports that storage memory is full! No way MMSlite can occupy so much memory! Anyway, ended up having to hard reset. Once reset, this time I installed CE Star to provide japanese font support and then installed MMSlite. Worked a treat. Can confirm I can receive both MMS and SMS but at the moment can only send SMS; MMS is no go as that 'special S!Mail' mail box will not allow phone number as destination. I think the S!Mail MMS mail box is configured as a normal email mail box so is expecting an email address or something. Next is to find how to get access to the flat rate connection so time to dig the archives...
Any other fellow Japanese Kaiser users who can share some experiences?
Thanks Larsuck for the comments and tips....

Well, that's a bummer, but as Softcrank keeps their flat-rate settings top top secret, it was also to be expected.

This is how MMSlite normally works, unfortunately. It can't send to phone numbers (or at least I have never been able to do so). However, build 275 has a function that, when you try to send an MMS to a phone number, it looks up the phone number in your contacts list and gives you a list of 'real' email addresses to choose from. Of course, there have been stability issues reported with build 275.
Question here: did your Kaiser have the joined SMS/MMS inbox? Or were the inboxes separate before you installed MMSlite? I have had trouble with the joined SMS/MMS inbox on some Hermes ROMs on Softbank.

Thanks for the info relating to MMSlite; think I have build 275 so could give it a shot I guess.
My Kaiser did indeed have the joined SMS/MMS box prior to installing MMSlite; post-installation they're still joined. What type of trouble did you have just out of curiosity? I've yet to have any issues.
Bummer, thought there existed some means of generating the password etc etc using some really convoluted means of installation in xda forums? So I take it there currently exists no means of accessing the Softbank flat rate connection outside of using the original Japanese mobile? I thought there was a post that would auto-populate the password field after the convoluted setup?
Yes, there is a convoluted process like that. Unfortunately, it depends on an .exe file called WIFIwake.exe that is device specific. There is an .exe for the Hermes and one for the Universal - none for the Kiaser yet. If you would like to try either of those links, they are
here
If you have the knowhow to delve into an .exe file and make the right changes (I have compared the files and there are only two changes to make it seems), I know you will make more than a few people happy. Needless to say, I don't have any idea how to even start editing programs.
I have been searching, trying to find a work around for a couple of months now. At first, I had been looking for the password itself, but I don't know that it is such a good idea for the password to get out. That's what happened before, and in response Softbank closed down that access point and switched to the current one.
So, now I'm looking for a solution in the form of a .cab or registry hack - one that can be used on a wider range of machines. If and when I succeed, I will post to this form and you can give it a shot.
I tried two ROMs with the SMS/MMS joined mailbox. The first one was Black Satin, and on that ROM the SMS wouldn't send or recieve. I didn't even keep that ROM long enough to check MMSlite. The second ROM was T-Lite by edhass. That ROM had no problems sending and recieving SMS, but when I installed MMSlite it created a separate mailbox called MMS1. So, everytime I would go to send a MMS, it would automatically try to send it using the joined SMS/MMS settings and it wouldn't go through. So, it wasn't that it didn't work, it was just kind of a pain in the ass.
Hi!

Patched WIFIwake from Chaimd
Huzzah! Huzzah!
Chaimd has apparently patched WIFIwake to work for Kaiser!
With this, Kaiser users should now be able to get the flat-rate Softbank connection working.
First, here is the thread where Chaimd first posted this info and the patched WIFIwake: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=298031&page=11
Read it first, because there is something about CID-unlocking the Kaiser and memorizing the Pre-unlocked CID. I will alert Chaimd to this thread and hopefully he can answer questions.
Thank you, larsuck. I'll try to explain the working WIFIwake.exe on Kaiser, in my terribly poor English.
Now, we can connect to the flat-rate Softbank access point, to patch and sign WIFIwake.exe.
That WIFIwake works copmpletely on my Kaiser. But that method depends on;
Pre-Unlock CID must be known!
CID unlocked, I used Pof's Hard-SPL.
Patching WIFIWake.exe;
01C760h "KAIS1300KAIS1300", 16 chars in UTF-16.
01C784h Pre-Unlock CID, 8 chars in UTF-16.
01C798h Pre-Unlock CID, 8 chars in UTF-16.
Self-Signing WIFIwake.exe
To Install not only connSBM.cab, Out.xml ans WIFIwake.exe,
but also your Self-Signing CAB file.
If you understand Japanese, you can get some informations of Kaiser & WIFIwake in this blog;
http://d.hatena.ne.jp/chai99/20071008
Now if you don't mind me asking, how do you use a non-japanese sim based phone on softbank with a data contract (not technically) but actually like go about it? As i go back and forth between japan frequently and in ~6 months will be moving there again for a year or two. Last time i lived there, I never had a mobile. Times change and now i need one for sure while there. I'd love to use a Kaiser that I have on hold at AT&T (can get it completely unlocked...). I thought they don't give SIM cards on there pre-paid phones...
@Philz,
If you get a cheap phone from softbank with a voice plan, you can use the sim card from that in your Kaiser. If your Kaiser is unlocked, the sim card should allow text and voice without messing with any settings. There is also a .cab program called Carrier Settings Wizard (or some such) that is floating around in the Hermes threads. It might be able to set up the (non-flat-rate) data settings for Softbank.
If you are a heavy data user and want a flat-rate data plan then, after signing up for one, you would need to apply the treatment that we are discussing here. However, from what chaimd says it doesn't sound easy.
Unfortunately, contracts from Softbank are usually for two years - not ideal for someone who is always traveling back and forth. Depending on how long you are in Japan, it might be cheaper just to roam here until you make the move.
@chaimd,
You said you used Pof's tool. Is your Kaiser Super-CID? It seems strange that the CID must be known if the device is Super-CID.
Also, you said:
"5. To Install not only connSBM.cab, Out.xml ans WIFIwake.exe,
but also your Self-Signing CAB file. "
What is this Self-Signing CAB file? Do you mean the patched WIFIwake?
Or perhaps ORE2Cert?
Will the ORE2Cert from the Hermes package work with the Kaiser?
Hi, larsuck! I'm writing on Kiser through the flat-rate Softbank connection, now.
First: Is my Kaiser Super-CID?
Yes, my Kaiser is Super-CID. First, I checked "info 2" command, after the installation of pof's Hard-SPL. As WIFIwake works on my unlocked Treo750, and I jumped and thought "Yes! Super-CID! WIFIwake will work without patches!", ..... but it does'nt generate the password in real. Indeed, it is strange. I was confused.
We tried many many patterns of patching WIFIwake, but WIFIwake did'nt generate the pass, and we spent a few days. Finally, one of us found the right way! and we've got to the flat-rate Softbank connection. We found pre-unlocked CID was known to work WIFIwake on Hard-SPL Kaiser. I don't know why?
2nd: What is self-siging cab file?
The itamae's WIFIwake has already been signed by him to work without a ROM cooking. ORE2Cert, ore-ore-certification means self-sign certification in Japanese, is his signature to allow execute a previllaged code for WindowsMobile devices. But, if you patch the WIFIwake, WindowsMobile rejects it as a illeagal modified code. Then, you must re-sign WIFIwake, and install yor own Self-Sign-Cert.cab with your WIFIwake. You need to make your own Self-Sign-Cert CAB file. ORE2Cert.cab from the Hermes package does'nt work on Kaiser.
I described how to make Self-Sign files without VisualStudio in my blog. It's almost the minimum procedure of self-siging, but it's in Japanese.

It seems to have installed just fine. but my mms, IE does not work. Its seems that my 3g data is having issues. I'm a USA T-mobile user. Anyone know how to fix this?
also what is an Xap and how do I use them?
I'm somewhat tech savy so I just need a link on how to use them i think. thanks for the help ahead of time =)

Ditto! Flashed my HD2 (T-Mobile Uk) and got the same issues. 3G wouldn't work at all, so no apps requiring data worked. Gave up in the end and flashed back to Android.
I did see a post about someone suggesting adding a new APN in the settings, but leaving the details blank (i.e. username and password) and just putting apn in the address, but I never tried it.
Thx iBimmer!!! I will do it right now and let you know how it turned out =)
Please help. I'm still having problems getting to install the XAP files. Any links or tutorials on how to use them?
The Deploying status just says preparing and hangs there. What am I doing wrong.?
Make sure your phone is unlocked (not at lock screen). Best is when you install XAP's to have the lockscreen setting to never.
Did you read the thread about Windows Desktop Marketplace?
You need to install Microsoft .NET Framework 4 and Windows Phone SDK on your PC.
I was missing Windows Phone SDK . HTC connection setup install and updated. i will try and use 3g now . Crossing my fingers
Ok got the XAP files installed, very easy once sdk was on my pc. I'm still have data connection issues. Does anyone know the manual setting for US Tmobile? or am I doing soething else wrong or need to do something else?
That's weird. I was trying to fix mine with editing APN settings and it didn't do it. Running Connection setup fixed it.
These are the settings that I have working on my iPhone: wap.voicestream.com, leave username and password blank.

I'm not sure what is required for the APN but I had the same problem and typed in "T-Mobile US" and saved it. It immediately started working.

I had it working on my 920 for the longest time. When I switched to the 1520 it no longer had that option. Weird.

I actually just turned this off this afternoon on my Lumia Icon on AT&T. Looks like its in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Messaging\PerProvidersettings\0\
I see AllowSendingDeliveryReport, MMSGroupText, SMSDeliveryText, SMSDeliveryNotify, RequestDeliveryReport among other things.

Only way to do it is if you didn't update the Windows Insider app. You can alter the WPFlights.xml file used to workaround the Windows 10 TP update process to make registry edits. I started a thread on it, but unless you have the old version of the app you can't do it
The registry keys that are needed to be edited in Windows 10 Mobile are under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Messaging\PerSimSettings\<longSIMnumber>. To walk the tree, use CustomPFD Registry Editor + Tweaks (I used version 0.3), to modify the value use Root Tool v2, select "Registry Tool For All Devices". You can select HKLM, but then must type the full path, the key and the value. Do check "Check if the value is DWORD". Make sure you can read the value before you try to write. After you wrote, read back. Works with the latest 10.0.10586.71.

Hi, I'm new here.
I think you can help me here : https://forum.xda-developers.com/windows-phone-8/help/how-to-activate-sms-delivery-t3696600
Thanks for your help.
Hi everyone,
I think I'm the dumbest of all dumbest because I couldn't find anything about this problem, but here I go.
I have a Nokia Lumia 530 (RM-1017) which I debranded: 059W3P8 was the former product code, and the new one (which I'm using) is 059W552. I'm also running WP8 (8.10.14234.375 concretely).
The main problem here is that I can't use "shared connection" feature, because, as the phone shows, "There's no cellular data connection to share right now", thing that makes me freak out because, as you will see in the uploaded pictures... I have an active internet connection.
I'm desperate and I don't know what else I can do. If someone already had this problem, please share with me/us how can we fix it.
Thanks a lot.
Follow the vcREG thread. Then put a registry editor on and list your keys here
HKLM\System\ControlSet001\Services\ICSSVC\Settings

I can't dump Settings subtree, so I made some screenshots of it:
That all looks good.
I have a different dedicated connection and private connection but I'm with tmobile
There's only a few more keys and it should definitely be working

T-mobile throttles my tethering after so many GB so I'm not sure if that plays into it or not.
so you might want to try with it and without it
Let us know if you have success
It has nothing to do with the registry, as I tried with another SIM from a different carrier and surprisingly it worked. I think it's a bug from the APN settings:
For the SIM with the trouble, I had to enter manually APN settings and it didn't work, but for the other SIM I used the default APN settings and it worked without any problem.
I hope WP10 solves this, because I expected a better experience with Lumia phones and Windows Phone...

I have that keys identically, so I think it surely is a bug.
Thanks so much for helping me
interesting... thanks for that update
you can try the access point app updating it might help too.
On my unlocked Lumia 920 (WP 8.0 Amber)I got a weird message saying I didnt have tethering on my plan (which I do)
I downloaded the Spanish (Spain) keyboard and voila it works it seems access point screws up the APN settings on that phone
