Hey everyone,
Got myself into an interesting situation here. I have the GSM Unlocked Moto X (XT1053) and I'm using it on T-Mobile USA.
I have unlocked the bootloader, installed TWRP (twrp-2.6.3.1-ghost-4.4), SuperSU, Xposed all that jazz. Phone ran wonderfully until I saw the 4.4.2 update zip.
Downloaded the zip, put the phone into fastboot and attempted to flash the stock recovery. I had some trouble finding it and ended up using the one I found here. After doing this the phone started to bootloop, showing the ugly white "WARNING: BOOTLOADER UNLOCKED" screen and then nothing then looped. I put the phone back into fastboot and reflashed TWRP.
Now the phone just bootloops into TWRP. To attempt to remedy this I fixed permissions, wiped cache/Dalvik but to no effect. I can actually successfully boot into Android if I go into fastboot and select the "Factory" option in the menu, however I seem to have lost my service.
So looks like I broke a pretty big rule, don't flash until you know exactly what it was you had- but I got impatient and greedy and now I'm paying the price :victory:.
How can I repair the damage I've done? I don't mind losing data (currently making a backup in Android).

sounds like you flashed something that was not a recovery i would return to stock and then follow this guide

thanks for the replies,
using the toolkit i have more or less fixed everything. however, my stock recovery is borked- it shows no options, just the android recovery background. i am currently downloading the entire firmware here and plan to extract the stock recovery.img to flash with fastboot.
hopefully this will trigger the ota and everything will be as usual from there on.

you can't trigger the OTA even if you are root and have a custom recovery you will still get the OTA you just wont be able to install it.

Thanks for the video, you were correct, my recovery is working as intended. To actually activate the options in the stock recovery you need to hold the Volume up button and press the Power button.
4.4.2 sideloaded successfully, nothing noteworthy for my personal use- wasn't there mention of the Google dialer in a Canadian update release notes?

I am note sure I usually just use the search feature or google now when looking I have a Nexus 5 I rarely use the dialer but it is nice to have seems like it would be available
If coming from the original JellyBean and have not updated your custom recovery since, you will need to install the recovery provided below. This step only needs to be performed once to support the newer updates.
Recovery Update
Boot into bootloader mode, connect the USB cable, and from a terminal window or command prompt type:

fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
To root an OTA, the procedure is pretty simple.
Code:
Copy the OTA from the cache folder to the sdcard.
Move the OTA zip somewhere it can be opened and unzip it
Go to system/etc/ to find the file named recovery and delete it
(extension may vary, but it is always named recovery)
Open the META-INF/com/google/android/updater-script
Delete all of step 1 and step 3 so that all that is left is the large middle portion without any steps
That's it. You have made the same files you find here.
Download the desired package below and copy it to your sdcard, along with the SuperSU recovery package.
Boot into recovery, select install from sdcard, and choose the update. Go back and repeat the install for SuperSU.

Currently my shield is 4.3, rooted and has a kernel of 3.4.10. When I boot to recovery, I get the broken android guy with the red triangle. I think if I remember right, when I was rooting it, I had issues getting a working recovery on there since mine was fairly new when I got it. So what is thebest way to install that first zip? Would I be doing it via fastboot?

First off I want to say thanks umbrella, for coming up with this method.
Bit off topic but I figured I would throw it out there, when you get the broken android guy, your recovery is doing exactly what it's supposed to. It's working, dont quote me here but I think pressing home and back simultaneously will get the menu to come up. I could be wrong on the button combo but there is a combination of button's to get the stock recovery menu to come up. If I remember right my droid X was the same way.

Quite possible. I stripped out the recovery in the update and used fastboot on recovery for this one. I rushed through it a bit lol.
If I remember right, I think it's by-name/SOS and the update uses it to install the system before flashing the recovery to the partition. I didn't update it, though, just in case that wasn't a secondary partition.

Ahh I gotcha. Well that's good to know. I haven't had a chance to really look at many of the files yet. Do you know if nvidia released the factory recovery packages yet?

Nevermind looks like 72 is out now.

Shield+home at the broken android guy brought up a menu.
What is the best way to install the recovery update file? Is this something that is done by booting the shield into the bootloader and then doing it via fastboot on the PC?

Last question-we have a working CWM recovery for the shield I believe. Are there any recoveries that work with the shield while running KitKat?

The OTA will restore the stock recovery. This way updates it to one compatible with KitKat.
KitKat Update Without Complete Re-root
OTA 98 has been added. No recovery update is needed coming from 72. Flash the build and SuperSU and off you go. No data wipe necessary, either.

Yeah, to clarify, in recovery, you must press and hold Shield and Home buttons for a second, then release to bring up the menu. Then use X and Y to navigate, A to select. Don't understand why the bootloader or recovery don't use the D-pad at all. They're weird. Anyway, downloading this now, and will report back in a few minutes. This is just sideloaded via the stock recovery, right? I hope so, that's how I'm doing it right now.

I think I'll try that new recovery (funny, because I had flashed the one included in the original update archive, still had issues). I shouldn't have to use that one, I was on update 92 already.
EDIT 2: Oh, I'm dumb. Here I thought this was still being done with the STOCK recovery. Didn't realize this would flash in CWM. Awesome. Flashed SuperSU 2.16 while I was at it. Rebooted, and it's at .98, with root access. You ROCK, @twistedumbrella!

Sucessefully rooted with motochopper
Bootloader unlocked by motopocalypse
Now when it comes to entering recovery mode through Rom Manager or GooManager i always end up with the dead android.
Even device update also failed and ends up the same way.
I have already deleted install-recovery.sh but to no avail.
I want to install SlimKat on my device, only thing in my way is a Dead Android whenever i try to enter recover mod. PLEASE HELP.

Do you have a custom recovery already installed? Which one? If you don't, remember that in order to flash a new ROM, you need to install a custom recovery.

Sure, buddy.
You need to download a custom recovery, this is the option in Android that lets you erase all content in the device and do other things. With a custom recovery you can do even more things, like install .zip archives or ROMs, erase partitions, dalvik cache, etc, etc, a lot of things.

Since you are already rooted, I think that you are familiar with fastboot. In order to flash a custom recovery, you need to do this:
1. Download the custom recovery
2. If it's in a .zip, extract the archive so you have one *.img archive.
3. Then, copy that file to the folder where you have the fastboot.exe archive.
4. Open Windows command console and change the directory to the one where you have the files.
5. Turn off your device, then press volume down key and power key. Hold until you see a black screen with white letters. Connect via USB to your computer.
6. Run the following command in the command console of Windows:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Where "recovery.img" is the name of your custom recovery archive, for example, "philz_touch_6.22.7.img"
7. Wait about 6 seconds and in the console you should see something like "done", I don't remember exactly what does it says.
8. You are good to go. Turn off your device. Then press the volume up key and power button. Hold until you see the custom recovery interface.
After this point, you can flash the custom ROM of your preference.
In the Philz link above, it goes to our thread that links to the main one, from there, download the unified moto-msm8960 one labeled for xt925/xt926. Last time I checked it was more up to date than the native mb886 one (not surprising since our CM repo is gone).
First of all I just bought Global Moto G 2014 (XT1063) from US Amazon and that was KXH21.85-23 (not updatable to Lollipop via shared OTA.)
So I did manage to unlocked the bootloader and flashed KXH21.85-17 and tried to flash the "Blur_Version.21.11.17.titan_retuglb.retuglb.en.US" which supposed to flash the Lollipop.
Unfortunately at first it failed to update me because "Printspooler.apk" mismatch the hash check. After attempt to flash (yes, I ignore the abort message and redo the process, It passed.... I don't know why) and stuck at some "xxx.apk" mismatch the hash again. After redo the process and bypass (for unknown reason that redo bypass the mismatch) I stuck at "velvet.apk" mismatch and this time It won't let me bypass and keep going on update to lollipop.
In my theory, Is it possible that I flash KXH21.85-17 from other country? Yes, any XT1063 (latin american, whereever on earth) supposed to flashable, but maybe the different country has slightly different apk. So that's why I failed the hash check.
Can anyone give me a URL or mirror to USA XT1063 for KXH21.85-17 that confirmed updatable to Lollipop? Since SBF-Dev and MotoFirmware is now down I couldn't find any.
I know what I'm saying is sound ridiculous, but I have no other theory that support my conspiracy anymore.

First you'd want to get back to stock kitkat which is up-gradable to Lollipop, so I would suggest downloading this file, http://180upload.com/bzl3ah1wov5g, which is 21.85-17, you can flash this file with fastboot by following this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/general/index-guide-update-to-lollipop-android-t2941340. Next you'd want to download both Lollipop files, the first and second one. (The second one is the newest update that fixes memory management). First file: https://mega.co.nz/#!UoQ02KLQ!22OUNBctGLoAUOMd_frTRT9jgbB3tRPUa4pPqfesGho.. Second file: https://mega.co.nz/#!s8ZSVJDA!SqUWPZODvM4-GYuXo6MC2JWTmpE9_jdyqlH-ycWi78I. Download both of those files and put them somewhere accessible (like your SD card) so you can flash these in stock recovery, so after you downgrade to kitkat you can flash the first one, then boot up and then go back into stock recovery and flash the second file. I'd recommend factory resetting your phone after this to smoothen everything out.
If all else fails you can flash TWRP recovery using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/development/recovery-twrp-2-8-0-1-moto-g-2014-t2896165, and then download this TWRP backup of the latest Lollipop, and place it in /data/media/0/TWRP/backups/(your device name here). Yes once you place the backup on your SD card, flash TWRP, reboot into recovery and go to advanced then go to file manager, then finish following the instructions above. Once you place it in the right place then you restore it. As of the stock recovery issue, it wouldn't make much sense to do that unless you followed the first option, where the stock recovery would actually be needed. But if you find a recovery image then yeah. If you do the second method you won't be able to receive updates nor update it manually unless doing the first method.. But the TWRP backup is the latest lollipop so enjoy!

Instructions
1. Download S7_S7E_ROOT_UNROOT_ADB_TOOLS.7z and your model and version you want from above
2. Unzip S7_S7E_ROOT_UNROOT_ADB_TOOLS.7z to S7_S7E_ROOT_UNROOT_ADB_TOOLS folder
3. Unzip the Model/Version file you downloaded and copy the files to the S7_S7E_ROOT_UNROOT_ADB_TOOLS folder and place them in the Odin folder
4. Prepare your phone for a data wipe
5. Reboot your phone to download mode and flash the AP_ROOT_G93*.tar in the Odin AP slot and reboot your phone to recovery

7. Now in the cmd window make sure your device is connected and choose Option (1) Launch TWRP
8. Your phone should launch TWRP leave phone plugged in and command window open on computer
9. Now In Twrp choose wipe and choose format data. Type yes in the box when it ask
10. Now in cmd window choose Option(8) Push Root.zip to Phone
11. Now in TWRP choose install and select the Root.zip
12. After zip is installed reboot and go through setup.
13. Once through setup make sure you are rooted
To Unroot Your Phone
1. In the Root Control app choose phone settings and unroot phone make sure phone is connected to computer
2. Now depending on the type of root you choose your phone will reboot to download if you chose system root or stock recovery if you chose systemless root. If your phone reboots to download mode skip to number 5
3. If your phone reboots to recovery once your phone is in recovery run the Setup.exe in the S7_S7E_ROOT_UNROOT_ADB_TOOLS folder
4. In cmd window choose Option(3) Unroot phone will reboot too download mode
5. In Odin BL slot choose the BL_G93*_DELETE_CACHE.tar and flash phone will reboot to recovery and say processing update then get an error and strart rebooting recovery
6. Let recovery bootloop at least once thin force phone back to download mode
7. In Odin AP slot flash BL_ENTER_ENG_RECOVERY_G93*.tar and flash phone will reboot to recovery with a bunch of red cache errors
8. In recovery choose wipe cache then reboot back to bootloader from recovery
9. In Odin BL slot choose BL_OREO_STOCK_G93*.tar for Oreo or BL_RESET_DM_VERITY_G93*.tar for Nougat and flash
10. This is important as soon as odin is done flashing and phone powers off immediately hold buttons to force phone to recovery
11. When phone reboots to recovery you will get no command error then when phone shows recovery options in black box at very botton it should say Successfully verified. If it says unsuccessful or failed then start at number 5 again. If successful and on oreo you are done.
12. If on Nougat and successful from recovery reboot to bootloader in Odin BL slot flash BL_NOUGAT_STOCK_G93*.tar
To Reroot Your Phone
1. Reboot to download in Odin AP slot flash AP_ROOT_G93***.tar
2. Phone will reboot then will reboot one more time and you will be rerooted
To Enter TWRP When Rooted
Remember with Nougat TWRP cannot mount data because of encryption so some zips wont work
1. Manually reboot phone to recovery launch Setup.exe in the S7_S7E_ROOT_UNROOT_ADB_TOOLS folder and choose Option(1) Launch TWRP
2. To Exit TWRP simply choose reboot

1. Put phone in download mode In Odin AP slot flash AP_ROOT_G93***.tar force phone to reboot to recovery. If you let phone boot it will reroot and you will have to run the unroot from the root control app.
2. In recovery launch Setup.exe in the S7_S7E_ROOT_UNROOT_ADB_TOOLS folder and choose Option(1) Launch TWRP.
3. Do whatever you need too do
4. To exit Twrp choose reboot to Download
5. In Odin BL slot choose the BL_G93*_DELETE_CACHE.tar and flash phone will reboot to recovery and say processing update then get an error and strart rebooting recovery
6. Let recovery bootloop at least once thin force phone back to download mode
7. In Odin AP slot flash BL_ENTER_ENG_RECOVERY_G93*.tar and flash phone will reboot to recovery with a bunch of red cache errors
8. In recovery choose wipe cache then reboot back to bootloader from recovery
9. In Odin BL slot choose BL_OREO_STOCK_G93*.tar for Oreo or BL_RESET_DM_VERITY_G93*.tar for Nougat and flash
10. This is important as soon as odin is done flashing and phone powers off immediately hold buttons to force phone to recovery

i thinks i updated to "G935TUVS8CRJ1" can i be flash on it?
Quick question. I just used this method to root my phone (v4 bootloader, CRI2 firmware if I'm reading it right). I had been looking at the post [Rom][ALL+CARRIERS_CRF1][Stock_Oreo_Hybrid][Safestrap_Preinstalled]. That one seemed like a good deal because of the followup post on Safestrap flashable zips, like Xposed framework, Extreme Debloater, Dual Speaker, etc....
I didn't consider that ROM because of the big warning Must Be On Stock CRF1, whereas I'm on CRI2 and this looked nicer anyway.
So, just to be sure I understand, now that I've used this method to root my phone I can install all those things and more by using this technique to get into TWRP on my phone. Correct? Further, I can use TWRP in this way to flash anything except a custom bootloader. Yes?
More specifically, all those ROMs listed over in the general Tools Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge ROMs, Kernels, Recoveries, & Other Development forum that say "for G9350 only", I can use this TWRP to flash those on my G935T ?? Is that right?

Should have been aware of what you are flashing a bootloader update is always an attempt to patch something. Usually root related. It is never to benefit the user. The first indication to me would have been a 4 version jump in bootloader versions all in one shot. I warned people all along that a bootloader change would come one of these days and kill root. Sprint seen it months ago. Tmobile and Sprint can now have there cozy little relationship with one another. I feel bad for you tmobile people. Remember when tmobile was the friendly carrier in the dev community along with sprint as well now they are the most unfriendly carrier in the dev community.

Twrp gives you no more options than you had before. You cannot just magically go flashing anything you want just because you have twrp. You can run a stock rom and mod it a little and that is it

No, if your build number indicates that you're on the v8 bootloader, you're screwed for now. If you like the S7's features, you can grab an Exynos. Those you can root and modify to your heart's content. Plenty of custom ROMs available. It's not too expensive either. It's what I'm going to upgrade to, since I'm tired of this bull with the bootloader, and my glass is cracked anyway. Would probably cost nearly as much to repair as to just buy an Exynos.

That's a false positive by a single antivirus program. VirusTotal gives it clean on 54 out of 56 antivirus programs, and one of those is merely "suspicious," probably because it's a rooting tool.
