So I'm attempting to prolong my Captivate's life a bit by upgrading to a newer version of android, and perhaps a more efficient one as well, but I'm brand new at this...my total experience so far of tinkering with phones has been on old Java phones, which are entirely different. >_<
So far I've managed to upgrade it to gingerbread root it, using a guide I'd googled up on another forum...can't link to it since I don't have the required number of posts yet. I think, basically, what I've done here is flashed in a kernel that rooted the thing, and then flashed it back to stock, which seems to be fairly routine?
Anyway, based on what I've been able to dig up, my best course of action seems to be to install clockworkmod, and then my custom ROM (cyanogenmod or slimkat?) on top of that, but I've spent the last three days or so rooting around through various guides and, this being an older phone, I've pretty much always ended up with either broken links and outdated information, or guides intended for more advanced users that give little information on how to actually do things. Flashing a ROM seems straightforward enough, so I guess what I'm asking is if there's an up to date, newb-friendly guide on how to get some version of clockworkmod onto this thing? The official post I found recommended using an app from the store that no longer supports this handset, so it wasn't much help...

Hey there, welcome to the joy of flashing
So you've got a good start. I've written up a quick guide couple years ago: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=36992233 - Pretty straight forward, just gotta follow the steps.
And here, Trusselo wrote a more detailed guide with links to get you going: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350266
I've recently flashed my little brother's cappy using those links so they should all work. As for the ROM, I do like GamerzROM a lot for this device but if you want something more up to date, CM and slimkat are good options too.
Thank you so much! I've got cyanogenmod up and running now (the slimkat rom wouldn't boot properly...), and really the only problem I had was figuring out why my data wouldn't work.
For anyone finding this thread on google, apparently Cyanogenmod on AT&T defaults to using their LTE network, which isn't supported...just had to switch it back to WAP. To do that, it's "settings > mobile network settings > access point names/APNs" to fix that bit. You'll want "wap.cingular / ATT" instead of "pta / AT&T LTE". You'll also probably be looking for google's default apps...I found them on cyanogenmod's wiki.

Hi folks, as you can see I'm a new poster here and looking for guidance from the wise and experienced!
I have a Milestone A854 for use on Cellular South and I was reading that there is a new stable Cyanogen update for use on Milestones. (The one found on "android.doshaska.net/cm6")
In reading through the forums I've been attempting to piece together the steps it would take to safely go through a process of backing up my current phone (rom/apps/settings/etc.) and then updating to this new rom. To be honest, I feel a bit lost here and was hoping someone with previous experience wouldn't mind taking mercy on me and linking or writing up a step by step guide on how this can be accomplished. My phone is running firmware 2.1-update1, the kernel version is 2.6.29 and is totally stock outside of using ADW and some downloaded apps.
I understand this is kind of a big request and I apologize for that. Truly my biggest concern is ensuring I have a good backup of the phone just in case I had to completely revert to a "safe image". I don't mind stumbling through the upgrade phase, but I really don't want to mess up the backup phase!
Again, thank you for any help and guidance you can offer to a struggling learner!
Try the guide in the link in my sig.
first of all wats ur bootloader version?
i'm not sure if the a854 is the same as a853, so i dnt knw if u can actually use CM6. a854 is CDMA if i'm not wrong? a853 is GSM.
if a854 is CDMA then i suggest you to contact the dev team regarding the basebands and all.

Thanks for both the replys!
Naresh, thank you for those links. I've been investigating them and working through stuff. I have had a hell of a time getting a good backup of my current phone but think I got one. I was trying to use ROM Manager but it would never perform a backup until I swapped it to the SPR mode where I was able to do a manual nandroid backup.
So now onto trying to load a new ROM. Wish me luck!
Well I can now report success was achieved finally!
Thank you Naresh for the pointers on Droid roms being compatible with this model. Sure enough, I was able to get the latest Cyanogen on BuglessBeast working on it with no real problems.
Again, thanks for the tip!

First you need to "root the phone" which will allow you to start the process. Rooting will not affect the current stock rom adversely. Get one touch root from the market and run it. Get Rom Manager and use it to back-up your stock rom. You will always be able to return to it if needed. Now, if you get the paid version of Rom Manager it will allow you to download, back-up and install CM roms and others. I am currently running the GimpSource Rom ASOP on an
Alltel A854 Milestone and I have absolutely no issues. All fuctions are perfect , wifi, GPS and themes are available.
I have a Sprint HTC hero with original everything.
I've been wanting to do a mod but that brings up a few questions.
1) A lot of places say the CM7 mod from here is great for this phone but I clicked around and can't find a list of things it changes/improves. Why would I install a mod and will most things continue to work (market places, email, phone utilities, purchased apps).
2) All roms have those warnings that they void warranty. How often do they brick the device? Is this something I should worry about?
Sorry for the noobish questions but I am looking towards modding the hero but I want to make sure I don't make it worse.
1.) well basically MOD's are roms that people cook themselves from the scratch android or from a base like for example the DesireHD android base. They can do things varying from the look and feel of android to adding elements like being able to browse Privately on your browsers. i know that CM7 allows you to do that. Being able to flash different roms opens up a even bigger Android World.
2.) I have been flashing back and forth for a long time and not once have i bricked the device. Besides not like a little system restore wont fix anything. Also if you happen to send you device into maintenance or repair just restore you phone back to factory settings. All of it is reversible. When i first started out it helped me to really read NOOB forums so i didn't do something i would regret, but you should have nothing to really worry about.
reply from a still nearly noob, although i read alot about roms already and flashed my sgs2. ill just attemt to help you a little here.
1) i now flashed lite'ning rom on my phone as there is no cm7 for it yet. once realeased i will also flash it as i also read that it is the most widely used rom with best support. within a thread of the specific rom there should be a list of improvements/major changes or what will be added if you flash the rom. these and mostly more battery life and/or more speed are the reasons people flash roms. after flashing the phone you will have all the things still working, sometimes even better. for apps it depends on the rom. mine for example didnt require a wipe that delets all you data on the phone. others (as i think cm7 also) require a wipe of all you on-phone personal data apps and so on (not sd card if im not mistaken, please correct me!)
2)yes, you void warranty if you flash a custom rom, root or do sth else on the firmware not published by the manufacturer. when i flashed and overflashed my phones rom for several time already i haven't had any problems. and as i read all over the net/xda there is just a very little chance to brick your phone and even there you might have possibilities to revive it, i think. but im not sure on this, cosider others informations first!
hope i could help you a little from noob to noob and enjoy flashing roms. oh and of course have a look in the htc hero android development section for roms!
cheers!

Go to this thread and start reading some of the linked threads. All your answers can be found there.
Hi, all. My issue is pretty specific to another thread in your forums, so I feel odd about "getting" my own thread just for it, but I tried to post in the relevant thread, and I was asked to post in Q&A instead, so here goes...
I have an Alltel CDMA HTC Hero running stock, never rooted, with the following:
2.42.01.04.23 Baseband
2.33.556.1 Build/Software
I'm not too wary of trying, for example, z4root just for that purpose, but I admit that I'm basically terrified of the whole flashing procedure. My ultimate goal is to get to CyanogenMod, and also store apps on my SD Card. I came across the "RegawMOD Hero Rooter v1.3" in the forums here, and it looks like exactly what I want--nice and automated. My worry is that it says "Successful in rooting all builds up to 2.31.651.7." I'm also wary of the downgrade to 2.xx procedure, mostly due to the Sprint vs. Alltel issue. I've jailbroken an iPod Touch dozens of times (brought it back from the brink of what looked like death several of those times), but this being my phone, I'm a great deal more paranoid, but still determined to give it a go.
Anyway...I don't really have a precise question. I mostly want to know if I'm out of luck with the 2.33 Build + Alltel issue. I'd be hugely appreciative if anyone could give some detailed advice on which Root tool to use, or specifically if the RegawMOD Hero Rooter v1.3 would work with my device as is. If not, I'd be very grateful for really specific, n00b-friendly instructions for downgrading as needed. I have searched and looked at all threads I could find that were related, and checked each page of the aforementioned app's thread, but could not find what I needed. I've also looked at all of the "major one-click" root tools, including heroroot010.apk. Thanks so much!
Hi there folks!
Im getting mighty confused about this flashing thing.
Im looking to change my ROM to something else then the ICS from Samsung.
Here is the deal.
I read the warning posts and it say (what i think it means) that my build "XLP9" ICS 4.0.3 from Samsung is not safe to do anything on.
I look around on the net to see if there is a way (despite what i read here).
It looks promising.
But all the things i find is ether a lower version of Android (like 2.3.x) or someone is telling me about tons of stuff to download and do before.
So this is were i ask you all.
Do (been searching for 2 days, perhaps my search terms are bad) anyone know if there is a working way to for me to change my version to AOKP for e.g without destroying my phone?
Like i said before, my Build is: XLP9, android version 4.0.3 (from Samsungs update service).
Phone is rooted using CWM.
Its a Note version for the .EU market bought like a few weeks ago (came with 2.3.x i believe).
If you know a thread that contains step by step instructions that will allow me to change the rom, please post it to me here.
Or if I´m screwed for updating to ICS just tell me so to
Cheers

Hello again.

So i tought perhaps there is a way to downgrade the phone back to the factory settings (not ICS).
But since i did the upgrade to ICS is the old rom still on the phone?
I mean to reset it back (same as thode recovery discs on a computer).
Any help or points in the right direction is helpfull at this time.

Now that you have upgraded to ICS. Those are the factory settings.
Easiest way to downgrade to GB Is by flashing a stock GB rom via pc Odin.
Most of the new ICS custom ROMs now just require you to install AbyssKernel 4.2, then select advanced options and select reboot recovery. Then you wipe your device (wipe data, cache and dalvik cache). From this moment you're free to flash. It all takes less then a minute if you hurry (joking, don't rush when flashing your phone), and it's not very complicated. Do it once and you'll know it's simple.
You need to have a root access first. Plenty of guides how to do it out there.
Hi peeps,
So I've read the FAQ, Sticky's and searched newby posts but never rooted a phone before so would be nice to bounce ideas off people before I brick the thing.
I'm rooting because I want to upgrade the OS, try the google DNS settings to see if it improves browsing speed and increase all round performance.
I always felt the hardware should be capable of more and now I want to see if it is!
I've tested download mode and seen the shiny yellow droid! :cyclops:
What I want to do is find the newest stable optimised OS for my device and practice rooting/customising before I move on to messing with my more valuable tablet.
I've read that IceCream Sandwich runs really great with low memory usage, do you guys cosign ICS as the best for I9000?
I also want to get rid of all the Samsung bloatware. Does anyone know which apps I can't remove because they might damage the device?
Found a guide to increasing RAM and processor speed by entering codes! Has anyone done this? Is it legit?
icantpostlinks.3arabfuture.com/2014/11/Samsung-Android-accelerate-and-strengthen-the-processor-and-ram.icantpostlinks
(you'll have to swap icantpostlinks for the www and html to check out the guide. It's written in Arabic but google did a good translation)
I've come across a ridiculous amount of ways to root my phone, has anyone tried the one click root app stuff?
The Odin tool looks good for flashing and they recommend using an 'Android cable'. Are there any issues with using other USB cables?
[EDIT: It doesn't look like Odin has a Mac version. Is anyone aware of a Mac alternative?]
Lots to talk about with this rooting stuff!
I had the official rom Gingerbread (works fine), custom roms Ice Cream Sandwich (so much better than the previous one), Jelly Bean (was just as good as ICS, maybe better), although this has been a while ago.
Kitkat was laggy. I haven't tried Lollipop. I did flash mine to Marsmallow, surprisingly it's seems faster than Kitkat.
Honeycomb was made for Tablet devices.

Wow Marshmallow was quick? I wouldn't mind checking out the multiscreen feature from Lollipop but more importantly I just want everything to be stable. I like the Notification feature from Jellybean so I'm tempted to start from there although it probably depends on which ROM you use, I suppose some will be better than others.
Did you delete any of the Samsung Apps?

If you flash custom rom on your phone you will lose all the Samsung Apps anyway. I think it wil be laggy if you tried the multiscreen feature, I think you mean the multitask function?
Jellybean is good, go for it I would say. Just follow the guides and you should be good to go. If you do happen to brick your device you can unbrick it with an unbrick tool.
I rooted and flashed various roms through the years from different creators, it has been a while ago though. I had to go back to stock rom because mine was rebooting on its own when it was on standby. It doesn't happen anymore but I need to root it again Glad it was not hardware issue.
I will go for Marshmallow again. I have only tested a little bit and I was satisfied so far. I will use this phone as a Music Player though
Edit: Maybe your account is too new to post links (not too sure) I haven't tried it myself. My account is new though.

You can use the search function on this forum. You just search for the rom and confirm it's for your device. You can also google it, some guides should lead to this forum but there are plenty of other websites with guides. I have used guides from here and from other websites, unfortunately I don't remember which sites and which roms (from which creator) I have used in the past.
I don't know if there is an Odin for Mac version, but yea you can try it in virtual machine or bootcamp.
Edit: Before you root, is your phone on Gingerbread? (I ended up doing this one, after this you can root with a different method)

The essential apps should be working on it unless it's designed for a newer android version.
After many attempts I managed to get all the flashing done (because it didn't always wanted to proceed for some reason, back then when I did it, it went smoothly. This time I had to search for the guides and files). My phone which I rooted and flashed long time ago, had some issues with randomly reboots when it was on standby so I went back to stock and it didn't happen anymore.
So from Rooted and Custom rom back to > Stock rom (Froyo) > Official update to Gingerbread > Root + CWM Recovery > ICS > Kitkat > Marshmallow
For some reason my router doesn't show up in the list, I see other routers though but I can connect my phone to my router by pressing the WPS Button (it happens on ICS, Kitkat and Marshmallow on my phone). After my router was turned off and on, my phone could detect the router. So it's all good now.
Well this phone will be my Music Player so it will have its uses and I don't need to buy an iPod or something
