Magnetic Charging Port Falls Out - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
after getting the back of my Z3 Compact replaced (directly by Sony Care cause Vodafone Germany neglected to fix it ) the magnetic charging port fell out during the last weekend (after a usage of around 90 days, 1 time each day). That is ridiculous for a phone in that price range in my opinion. Just have a look at the picture below.
I really feel like it doesn't matter how I'm going to charge my phone I will either destroy the charging flap or the magnetic charging port. I'm thinking about selling it and to go back to the S3 after reading some posts over at Sony Mobile.

Superglue?
You're right - it's ridiculous to have such a new phone literally fall apart like this. If Sony offered better customer service, I'd suggest you call them. That will likely get you nowhere though. They believe they are perfect and that the customer must have done something wrong.

@OP: sorry to hear this. not the first time on the forums, either. were you using a dock? or a charging cable? and if so, what brand?

The same happened to me..
I charged my Z3 Compact on the Sony DK48 dock and after 1 week(one charge a day) it fell out.
What should i do? Send it to Sony Care to get a new charge plate with cheap glue?

IF you can live without the phone for 10 days, then give it a shot. If not, then it really shouldn't be too hard to fix yourself. A single drop of super glue should hold it permanently.

Maybe I try with superglue. Do you know if this can make it less waterproof?

I don't honestly know - I haven't had any issue with my port, but I also didn't buy the phone to take pictures under water. I live in Kansas now - nowhere near water.

Happened the same to me, used superglue and the phone is still waterproof in my case (I used it in a pool, no problems). Just procure to not use too many superglue.

It's not like there are no pools nor faucets in Kansas, lol. Have you at least checked your phone's waterproofing with the pressure sensor in test mode?

LOL!
Like I said, my charging port never had this issue, so I can't vouch for the fix. But if you can't wait for sony, it's probably your best option.

Sorry then, I thought you had

After having my z3c for a few months. This has also happened to me OP did you send it off or super glue? Also, I'm considering on supergluing it but does it affect it's water resistance/ charging? Won't the glue melt or even cause fire because of the electric current producing heat/electric?

Magnetic charging port fell out
I've had my new phone for 2 months and used the magtron x2 accessory and a cheaper one. My phone has now been sent back to Sony so a wait of 28 days. After only a few days use I was getting a message to say shut the port as it had come loose. Is this going to be an ongoing problem? I bought the phone because it is waterproof.

try B-7000 glue, find pict on google

My magnetic charger took it off too.
I was able to repaired though easily.
A few notes first:
I would not use superglue type (cyanocrilate). It is not waterproof itself but the worse is that it would be very difficult to maintain the device hermetic since it is hard to have a homogeneous glue layer.
To reintroduce the port back properly you would have lift frontal glass and the frame within since the internal port contacts needs to be sitting underneath the frame. I glued mine without this procedure, but this would be the right one for a proper contact between the port and the phone.
What I did:
First clean both the port and its socket from leftover sticking tape. Use alcohol and a cloth.
Then look that just by putting a light pressure there is contact between the terminals. (hopefully you dont have to meddle with the contact a bit)
Then apply a very thin and homogeneous layer of waterproof glue that does not dry increasing its volume like Gorilla glue does. I used Loctite Glue2 but other in that category will work. Important to use a very thing layer and homogeneous since a bit more in one side it would not glue properly in the other and if is a think layer it wont make electrical contact with the phone.
Then put in place the charger because it fits easily and surround the phone and charger adaptor with a rubber band tightly and leave it overnight.
You can verify right after glueing that it is charging and if not, undo everything before the glue sets.
After 24h, not before, you can check that the device still hermetic by typing *#*#7378423#*#* then tap on Service Tests > Pressure Sensor and press in the middle of the front screen to see if the milibar increases
Instead of pulling the charger off now I split the connection like you will split a chocolate bar since it puts lets stress than pulling. Half a year never had the problem repeated.

I'm not so sure about this. For black phones; Sony part number: 1282-3345 is the replacement port. Google it - lots of places sell it. I got mine from an ebay seller - came complete with the adhesive pad fixed, so you just have to clean off the adhesive and re-stick. There aren't any hooks on the component whatsoever - it has two blade-type connectors that sit in another socket which is retained in the phone.. It looks like Sony (very sensibly) designed this port to be sacrificial in the event of damage.
One word of warning; if you have a port which is only detaching at one end, and you need to replace it; try and pull the connector out as straight as possible (perpendicular to the phone). If you tilt it too much it might damage the permanently attached socket in the phone, or you might snap off one of the blades, which will be a bit of a pain to retrieve.

inductive charging mod for defy

I finally made one.
wanted to do this for a long time.
One of the harder mods i made.
-extremly small solder points.
-should still be water resistant afterwards
-wont charge without data pins connected - but usb should still be usable.
here it is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOSdcRLA-mo
I spend more then 10 hours in total to do this. Was it worth it?
=D hell yeah!
strong electromagnetic field does not damage data on a memory card?
its not long term
yes you can charge like this but with this kind of chargers your phone's life + memory life will reduce because of strong magnetic / electromagnetic field so try use it in emergency only

i call bull****! sorry to sound like a prick, but i strongly dislike people talking out of there ass about things they don`t know **** about.
This wont damage anything. Infact, this "strong magnetic / electromagnetic field" won`t even reach the phone.
Maybe you read some more about that topic:

Hi puked,
I would be very interested in knowing more about this mod you created. Good work by the way.
I was planning on doing something similar, I wanted to modify the car dock to charge the phone automatically when docked. I was thinking of adding 2 contact points on the back cover which would mate up with springs or some such on the car dock. I hate having to plug cables into the phone when putting the phone into the dock, bluetooth takes care of the audio nicely, just needed to get the charging sorted!
I'm particulary interested in hearing your experience of where you tapped into in the Defy. Did you solder directly to the back of the the USB connector? And you mentioned needing to connect the data pins to invoke charging, can you explain a little more?
hi jurgen,
i should have made some photos during the process of making the mod. Sorry for that -.-
Yeah, I soldered directly to the back of the USB port. Only one wire needed for Vcc.
A pinout can be found here:
http://www.talkandroid.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/pinout-microUSB1.png
this is the micro USB port, when you look into it from the front.
A guide, how to disassemble the phone can be found via youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uSH1UuEOvI
you only need to remove the backcover and the plastic shielding over the USB Port - this is easy.
To be able to reach the pin for soldering, you need to remove the antenna, too.
I drilled a hole into the plastic shielding to lead the cable through. You have to do this; there is no room to lead the cable otherwise.
Put the plastic shield back on, and fixate the cable on it.
to lead this point to the top of the battery, I used adhesive copper-foil.
GND can be taken from different points - I used the slot of the sim-card. lead this point to the top, too.
The receiver i used is from the cover of a palm pre.
The problem I had after I finished the mod: Phone won`t charge. Why? Well - dumb Moto decided the phone will only charge if USB is connected. You have to shorten the Data-Pins.
How did I do this? I got myself some micro USB plugs. remove the pins and dremel/saw it so small, that it fits into the slot completely. Remove the metal shielding and insert one of the pins from underneath (there are small holes, that normaly hold the pins in place). you eventually have to melt the plastic between the holes, so that the metal bridge fits. It should be flat and not stick out. You now have to shorten the pins sticking out on top, so that they are exactly as long as the pins would be.
Sound complicated and is complicated and damn frustrating, cause the whole thing is so tiny. we are talking about maybe 2mm at most.
Afterwards you have to isolate the whole thing. Instead of re-attaching. the metal shield, use some duct tape or similar.
This thing is sturdy if done correctly and easily removable, if you should need the USB Port.
I`m sure there are other possibilities do do make such a plug. This method worked for me.
I`ll make some photos later and post some links to a similar project for the Samsung Galaxy+. I hope it`ll be quite clear afterwards.
If someone wants to do this mod, I suggest you to start with the micro USB plug. Would be very frustrating, if you mod the phone first, and fail making a plug. Without it the whole mod is useless.
Maybe someone knows if it is possible to change something in software (CM7), so that the damn phone will charge without the pins connected. I still hope, this is possible, but didn`t get any feedback to this question as of yet.
Thank you for the very detailed response and the links.
I'll look into the links later, the shorting plug sounds like a pain to get right! Hopefully, as you say, there is a software setting/workaround that can bypass this.
Very interesting project!!! Impressive! One question that comes up: How long does it take to fully charge the battery?
Hi puked,
that's awesome work, congratulations for getting it working!
I did the same thing to my defy a couple of months ago, but I had less success unfortunately. I soldered it in and, like you, I noticed it did not charge when power was applied to the port. I eventually figured out that the pins need to be shorted, so did so, and have managed to nearly get it working.
The problem is, it only works if i take the coil out of the back and push it onto the touchstone base so there is little to no air gap. If it's even slightly off centre, the charging constantly restarts and it doesn't work. I haven't managed to get it to work with the coil in the case. I haven't installed the magnets/steel discs, as I wanted to get it working reliably first.
I wanted to ask, did you find it had to be perfectly centred for it to work? Did gluing the magnets in help here? Did you do anything special with the metal sheild behind the coil?

Hi Puked,
Can you please take the battery cover of your phone and make a picture of the inside? This might help me to see if I will try to make this mod myself....
Thank you.
Hi Puked
First of all Thanks and Congratulations for making it work. Awaiting photos before I touch the screw drivers
Hi and sorry for not responding for such a long time. I´m very busy at the moment, sorry :/
I promise i will make some more photos this evening and update this post with them.
To answer Craigms questions:
I cut the "metal shield, so that it fits - it`s a bit to wide to fit in without shortening. I diden`t use the little round metal plates from the palm cover (these are no magnets), instead i used sheeting from a tin.
To find the best spot on the touchstone, i used wires to link cover and phone, so that i could move the cover around. when i found the optimal place on the touchstone, i attached the sheeting and fixated it.
I also had to dremel down the plastic inside the battery cover so that it fits and closes without pressure.
Notice: The first touchstones seem to be faulty - they have problems even with the original HP phones.
I have problems aligning the phone as well, sometimes. But that only happens, if battery drops below ~30% - that rarely happens since I modded my phone.

Nice work. I've actually just finished a Touchstone Car-Cradle for my Defy.
My problem is the shorting of the data pins... damn those tiny plug .
Puked, you wrote that one doesn't need the metal shielding of the plug but in the picture you've posted there is a metal shield around the plug... Without the shield it seemed to me, that the plug is too lose and the data pins have no connection. On the other hand, with shield it's really hard to remove the plug from the defy... in fact there's currently one stuck in the USB port :|.
Having destroyed three plugs with my oversized soldering iron, I now need to wait for new ones before I can continue :/.
Could you please post a picture of the micro-USB plug alone? So I can maybe follow your lead
Yeah - the plug is a pain in the ass. If I would have known, that the phone wont charge without them connected, I could have solved this problem in a different way.
best thing to do would be to solder 2 more cables to the data pins and shortem them via battery cover - similar how I did it with Vcc and ground - just with data.
You are indeed right - there is a metal shielding. I made a new plug. Will make photos later.
btw. I still believe (hope) that one could make the phone charge without the pins shortened via software.

Replacing the headphone jack port

So, On the bus ride home today, I was in a rush getting off the bus and my headphone cable got caught and pulled quite hard on the phone.
The jack popped out, so when I was on solid ground I put the jack back in and pressed play on my podcast but nothing happened.
I pushed the headphone jack to the side slightly and sound came through.
So the sound only works if I push the jack towards the right, with the phone facing you.
So I opened it up to see if I could see anything loose, but it looked fine.
I chatted to a rep from amazon.de and they said I could send it to them and they will fix it, but if it is broken due to negligence, I'll have to pay for repairs.
Not sure if breaking the headphone port counts as negligence.
And also don't feel like restoring the phone to stock and rerooting etc....
So instead I just ordered the replacement part from ebay.
Will try installing it when it gets here and see if that works.
I didn't fancy not having my phone for weeks because of a non-essential part being slightly broken.
Will post my progress and the results when the part arrives.
Cheers
Jayd

It isnt as though it was a manufacturing defect

That was what I thought too.
I will definitely post pics, although my note is the best camera device I have, so it will have to be with my wifes galaxy W.
But it's better than nothing.

So.
There was a side-effect of breaking the headphone port.
I noticed that the battery was really flat last night for some reason, I didn't think too much of it and I put it on charge.
This moring I took it off of charge, after a night of charging and it had only gotten to 42%. Which is when I realised that there was a problem.
I tried charging from my pc and the AC outlet, and it would charge very slowly and not above 42%. And when off charge, the battery would drain quite fast.
So I wondered if it was a result of me taking the phone apart and putting it back together wrong, so I took the back cover off again.
I tried to charge again, but same problem.
So then it dawned on me that the broken headphone port might be short circuiting something to drain the battery, so I popped the connector for the headphone jack off of the motherboard and tried to charge it that way.

When I did this the phone charged with no problems. So it seems that the part was shorting out somehow.
This meant that I had to remove it now, instead of waiting for the replacement.
I removed the main board (for directions on how to do that check out one of the youtube videos on galaxy note teardown.)
To get to the headphone port part.
I had to remove the two silver screws to remove the little metal bracket holding it down, then pulled out the headphone part.
It is just stuck down with some rubbish sticky glue type stuff.
Then installed the metal cover and the mainboard without the headphone port part.
I then wanted to cover up the hole that was now in the top of the phone that would allow direct access to the main board. Luckily I use a case, so I used a bit of plastic, to sit between the phone and the case.
And here is the phone, with decent battery charge, next to defective part.
So, now the phone at least isn't going to damage its self while I wait for a replacement part.
BUT!!!! Before you try this, keep in mind that the other thing attached to the headphone port is the speaker for phonecalls.
I tested it with a phonecall from another phone.
The phone rings, but I can't hear anything when I pick up.
The person on the other end hears my voice, but also an echo of there own voice.
So, it is a drastic move, but at least now my phone is useable until the replacement part arrives.
It's a good thing I don't phone people, I mainly text anyway, so I should be fine for now.
Will update when the new part arrives.
Hi,
I've problems with my jack port too so, like you, I would like to replace it. Do you know where we can order a jack port for ours Galaxy Note ?
I ordered mine from ebay.
But I have seen other websites that have the same thing.
The ebay one was the cheapest for me, although it is shipping from the US to UK, so it will take a while to get here.
I will make a video or take lots of pictures so you can see how to install it.
Cheers
Jayd
Got a call from my friend today. Had to hang up and text him saying that I couldn't take is call, because I had removed the speaker from my phone. Was pretty funny.
Well, thank you !
Unfortunatly, I can't open your link because I'm in France and there are restrictions on ebay. Do you have a reference/name to give me plz ?
Anyway, to avoid the problem, I've ordered bluetooth headphones today. Hope you can replace your jack port soon !
Search Google for:
"Headphone Jack Earphone Flex Cable for Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 i9220"
That was what the ebay item was called.
So you can't access ebay in France?
Thanks, I can access ebay but not the link you send me. The product is maybe unavailable for France...
Jobs Done
I got the replacement part today, after a week without the headphone jack or speaker for the phone.
So I opened up the phone again, as I did before. You can see the open space where the part needs to go.
So I took of the white plastic which uncovered the sticky area on the speaker used to stick down the part. The blue underneath of the headphone jack was also a bit sticky. I stuck it in place and it went in really easily.
Next I had to put the little metal bracket back in.
Then I put the screws into the bracket to hold it in place then put the main board back in place and screwed that down too.
I then clipped the connectors back in place and put the cover back on.
Booted it up and it is working perfectly
I tested the headphone jack afterwards and it is firm and the sound isn't crackly. I also tested the speaker for phonecalls and it is working again and sounds normal.
So it looks like, all in all, it was a successful fix.
Will update if any weird side-effects show up.
Cheers
Thank you! I've got the same issue where it only outputs stereo when I push whatever is plugged in to the headphone part toward the back of the phone. Cnn.cn has the part for $5 + $5 shipping, so I'll grab that and use your pics for reference!
My pleasure.
Feel free to contact me if you need help figuring anything out.
Cheers

I think I found my own answer and looks like you do.
No you don't need to take it apart, but you do have to remove it to get to the bracket underneath.
By that I mean, unscrew the main board and pop the few clips that are connecting the IO ribbons to it, then just pull it off.
congratulations on your succesful fix.. i can't even dare to do this as you have did that.. you are so brave

Sounds like you bent a contact to one side with the preasure of the Jack. I did this on a pod and used a torch & Bobby pin to pull the contact into the side of the hole again. It was not sticking far enough into it to make contract

[Q]-Power port repair

Hi folks. For some reason, a small chunk of the tab inside my DS7 power port has been broken. It looks like somebody got hungry and chewed a tiny piece of it off. So as of right now, the power cable will not charge the DS7. I noticed on ebay somebody selling repair service for it and was quoted

$100 seems a tad expensive as it's over 1/2 what I paid for it. Does anybody have any recommendations like a DIY kit or know of somebody doing cheaper repairs? I like this little, fiesty tablet and am not ready to scrap it quite yet especially if the JB rom gets going.

Hi Noc and thanks for the info. Does it require any soldering or is this a fairly simple setup?
If it's the port, you either need just the port itself (which requires soldering) or the entire motherboard (which could be pricy)
once the streak is disassembled its a 5min job to remove the old one and attach then new one (given that you are alright at soldering) the risk with this is that you could short the mobo if you suck at soldering

I'll see if mine has some soldering equipment. Sad to lose that Steak just a few weeks after getting it.
My port is broken too, no way i could solder a 30pin connector with my eqiupment. Can anyone post a picture where I can find the two power pins. Are they on the left or on the right side. All I want is to charge it. I see some little circles on the board that could be additional places to solder my two cables, anyone any ideas ? I know it isnt the best solution to have a cable looking out of my streak but i alrdy bought a female mini usb connector. That could be of good use here. If needed i could make a photo of the circle pins on the board so anyone could say me wich one is what.
Heres a picture of my board and the circles that i mentioned above.

If I am posting to the wrong place I apologize. The real quesrtion is this is why do the pins keep burning off. The second question is why did dell stop all support for the ds7. The ds7 was and is defective from the start. Dell now refuses any support. I have two ds7s with the same problem. So I ask how many of you agree there should be a class action law suit againt dell? My newest unit is four months old called dell the are refusing to do anything about the situation. I asked if I could send my ds7 in for repair and pay for repair, answer was no, dell is no longer doing repairs, to make things more upsetting dell is selling the ds7 at fry's for $200. Who is interest in a class
action lawsuit with me? I will start a suit with or without support. The whole ds7 problem is just plan wrong. Feel free to email me at [email protected]. btw I am almost sixty years old not a young person with a bad attitude. Wrong is wrong and dell is out of line with the ds7. Thanks. Bart
Dell may in longer be selling it. Fry's could just have a last batch if old stock.

if its not the tablet its the charger or the proprietary cable (f*** you dell) I have had to repair the cable myself due to its abnormally short length and my habits of trying to use it away from the charger while it was on charge (heat shrink electrical plastic + solder fixed the issue though)
I'd say replacing the part yourself would take about 15min once device is disassembled

Sadly the ports on Ebay went back up to around $99. I *thought* I saw one for like 10. All the Dell 5 ports are cheap, the Dell 7 ones are basically almost the price I paid for the thing
Then get a new one, lol. Understand if you can't.
Anybody want to buy a Streak 7 and then repair it? It's rooted already.

..Hi folks. For some reason, a small chunk of the tab inside my DS7 power port has been broken. It looks like somebody got hungry and chewed a tiny piece of it off. So as of right now, the power cable will not charge the DS7...

I have had two D7's with the issue. The first was due to a bent pin, took some tweezers and flattened the pin, then slightly bent the the metal casing of the charging cable outward- but bend it more toward the ends of each side, as a result the middle slightly bowed outward but it worked.
...and have to put the plug into the port at an extremely slight angle to go in smooth, once in, it charges fine. been using it that way for about 8months, no sweat.
The reason for slightly "opening" the ends of the the charging cable is so that it fits better over the end pins on the charging port tabs.
It is likely that some of those that have broken/cracked ports and/or bent pins wind up not working still because the edge of the charging cable catches on a pin, so by bending the cable housing just a little, it helps give it the lift to get over any pins that would normally catch and they'll make enough contact to charge and also connect via USB. That's also why plugging in at a slight angle helps the pin get "under" the outer housing of the charging cable.
However, the second one DS7 that had the issue more like what is in the initial post regarding an actual cracked charging port tab.
In mine, there's two small chunks of the top tab and one small chunk off the bottom tab in the power port. Yes, BOTH the bottom and top charging port tabs were damaged!
Mine was due to my little one horsing and tripping over the cord, when it yanked out at an angle...well...it got screwed up. At first it didn't seem like it was going to work, but after a little bit of careful fiddling...
Anyhow, I did have to use the tweezers again AND had to slightly bend the plug as described earlier. That said, I charge this thing daily and no issues, nor have to replace the port. If you fiddle around a little with the plug itself (ie. try bending it open just a little on the ends that match where the charging port tab pins were bent) and plugging in at a slight angle, it may very well help some of the others with this issue.
It's worked for me now on two different devices with very similar isues... so all I can say is these small tweaks worked for me...this DS7 has been charging/USB plugging fine for about 6 months of daily use... hope someone else can benefit.

I'm necroing this old thread because-IT WORKS! All i needed to do was replace the power cable. Despite the HORRIBLE condition the tab in the power port looks, the Streak 7 still gets charge and works now. Amazing. Onward ho to JB 4.2 from Honeycomb!

Waterproofing and removable battery

Why does Samsung insist on trying to make their phones with removable batteries waterproof? Didn't they learn their lesson with the Galaxy S Active?
Could care less about waterproofing..lol like im going to go swimming with my device.
Removable battery is a very nice feature..along with ext sd card support.

Big difference.

They did make a point to say this during the S5 debut. Resistant, not infallible.

Still, IP67 means complete dust protection (6) and ability to withstand up to 30 minutes under one meter of water (7). More than enough water "proofing" for most people. As long as I can answer my phone right after a shower and I can use it in any weather condition, I'm happy. Now, to decide between the Z2 and the S5... Or maybe HTC will give us something even better. Decisions, decisions...
As my phone usually sits in a dock on my desk when I'm working, this USB cover will prove a real pain I suspect.
But removable battery and an SD-card slot are both essentials for me, so at least those boxes are ticked for me.

I have to say that water resistance is something I really wanted for the long time. Feel stupid that I bought S4.
So you dont like removable batteries???

Personally the s5 does seem like a bit of a let down. I went from the first s to the s3, so that was a major improvement. But Im not so sure about the bump from the s3 to the s5. Only time will tell if it is really a great improvement when it comes out. If only HTC made the new phone with a removable battery. Removable batteries is the most handy thing ever. Battery dies, just slap in a new one. No battery worries or problems!
But who know, I sure hope it turns out great.

did the s4 active water resistance fail because of flawed design, or because people don't know how to put the backs on their phone properly?

It doesn't matter which was the actual reason, if it fails because of people not knowing how to put the backs on their phone on properly then it is a flawed design.

No. that means the people are stupid.
That's like saying cars are bad and have a flawed design because people don't know how to drive them and end up killing themselves.
Does anybody know whether it would be possible to remove this USB cover?

This usb cover protects your phone from water damage.
Some advice for water resistant phone users. Form manuals and my exoeriences:
Remember this phone is water resistant not water proof like sone rewievs wrongly saying.
Take care of usb cover. Dont damage it, dont rip it off, close it carefully and be sure to check if its really closed, are edges are 100% flat not raised.
Close back cover well. Check 10 times before going with your phone into water.
If you're not sure avoid water contact with your phone. If you ignore my and manual warrnings you damage your phone and warrainty will not cover expensive repair.
Do not swim underwater with your phone in salt water. Do not drunk it in beer, cocacola and any other liquid that is not fresh water. You can do it only in fresh water.

You've obviously never handled the newer s devices. I went from a s3 (July 2012) to note II (october 2012), to note 3 (October 2013), I saw significant improvement between all devices. S3 was sluggish after switching to the note II, note II had significant battery life improvement and was way faster than the s3. Even with custom roms on both, the difference was day and night. When I moved to the note 3...the battery would actually last me a full day, sometimes on weekends I may need to charge it at some point so I have some juice if I decide to stay out a bit later. The response times are also significantly faster on the note 3 compared to the note 2. And that's a single gen jump so I don't know why you would think the s3 to s5 jump wouldn't be good? The s3 was honestly a sluggish device, even compared to what the s4 had/has to offer. But then again, the needs of an individual will vary, if you find that the s3 is fine you may want to stick with it until it dies.

Does that leave the phone facing me, with the screen display on? Same applies when I'm in the car by the way, my phone always sits in a dedicated dashboard holder - screen on for music player & sat nav use, but charging at the same time. Does wireless charging do this? If so, then yes problem definitely solved for me (I rarely use the USB port for data transfer, Samba share over Wi-Fi is fast enough for most stuff, and it's convenient and always-on).
However, as they made the 3.5mm audio socket water resistant, why could they not do the job properly and do the same for the USB port? I guess it would need gold plated terminals to fully avoid possible long-term corrosion, but hey this is not a cheap phone and you're not going to be dipping it in and out of water all the time anyway.
Andre
The main point of the water resistance is that if you are walking and it starts to absolutely pour it down you can still use your phone, it's not designed for you to go live underwater, because as you know smart phones over the years have had a bad reputation of developing faults after being used in the rain.

How does magnetic charging work?

I have never used anything but USB charging, but I'm pretty sure I don't want to wear out the flap/door over the USB port.
Does this use a pad? It looks like there's a recess in the side of the phone. Does the charging connector just snuggle up to that?
I'm assuming I could buy a charger from T-Mobile or Sony. Or maybe the connector for this is some kind of industry standard?

Apparently there's a load of really crap ones out there. I'd advise you to either go for the Sony Dock (Sony Xperia Z3/Z3 Compact DK48 Magnetic Charging Dock)
http://www.clove.co.uk/sony-xperia-z3z3-compact-dk48-magnetic-charging-dock
Or there's a highly regarded charger tip that fits onto the end of your USB lead. See it here: http://www.clove.co.uk/microusb-to-magnetic-connector-adapter
You won't go far wrong with either of those, anything else might not be as good as you would have hoped for.
I purchased this magnetic charging cable on ebay from seller myhkstar.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/201073400856
It appears to be genuine; it's well constructed and has a very strong magnet.
Ordered on the 8th, shipped on the 10th from HK, received on the 18th.
Nice one, I was always led to believe if you wanted a proper Sony one you had to buy their whole dock, so I don't know if its genuine or not, although the packaging looked good so maybe it is.

I also ordered 3 of (what appears to be) the same cable from the dx-box.com website and find they are of good quality.
I initially ordered one, liked it and then ordered 2 more - home, work and car!
PS I am using mine with Z1 compact...
Is the magnetic charger cables are all same for z1,z2,z1c and z3c. Wanna buy cable so the flqps wont be loose coz it needs to open every charge.

btw, i had the Sony Dock for the Z1 and my Z3Compact fits into it just fine when i use the 2nd/alternative insert they included. saved me from having to buy a new one
that model was the DK31. I just used the dock adapter for the Z1 w/case and my Z3C fits like a charm (without a case on it of course)
Yes it might be worth while seeing which of the older docks are available, they may be cheaper than the most newest and as the older phones tend to be a bit thicker its possible that your new phone with a case on will fit on an older dock ok (my DK48 had to have all the inserts removed and a small piece of foam padding in to allow it to be used with a cased phone)

But that does not answer the question... Does this allow charging without opening any flaps on the waterproof devices \ allow us to keep the device constantly sealed to avoid potential water issues from the flap breaking from constant use?
Let me rephrase, is this magnetic like the mac-book cables (so a normal port but instead of a clip uses magnets), or is this an induction or pogo-pin setup that uses magnets to hold in place because it is just a surface contact that is waterproof?
Thanks
It's waterproof just like the headphone jack and it's simple contacts, no induction. So it's not "magnetic charging", it's just a proprietary connector held in place by a magnet. It's originally simply meant to place the device on the dock, Sony never sold a cable or adapter on its own.

Yes. it does supports charging without opening any flaps on the waterproof devices. Only this connector have only power connector and no data
Yeah - seems like the magnet just holds the plug flush against the devices connector pins, as the plug doesn't physically 'snap in'.
While its useful not having remove the flap/loosen it over time, i'm not a big fan. When im about to sleep and there isnt alot of light, i find the cable very hard to place correctly. It only connects one way and you have to be pretty precise to get both pins to line up. Granted this is with aftermarket cables (3 different companies) and a ringake case.
I wish it was more like the MS surface tablet plug, where the magnet lines up the connector and causes it to 'snap in' very easily. Obviously I dont know if waterproof limitations make this connector type impossible.

I found the magnector X202 to snap in very easily. it has a strong magnet and its asymmetrical construction prevents putting it on the wrong way around, preventing any possible short circuits. i can put it on blindly. i also had a second magnetic charger which i send back exactly because of the issues that you are describing. the alignement was just too much of a hassle. only problem is it is quite big and may not clear all the cases. though they released newer versions which
are not cables but adapters, which may work better with the clearance of the case (x203 version 2 i think just got available).
If your case allows this cable i would really consider buying it, its a bit on the more expensive site but its high quality and saves you a lot of fumbling around. also it is only 1m long but just buy an usb extension cable then your good for everything.
Supposedly Sony is going to do away with magnetic charging in the Z4 and use a waterproof micro-USB, which would be very welcome (fewer proprietary accessories and one less hole in cases). Until then, I use a mag cable with my Z3c and have tried a few of the Ebay cheapies. They work, but do not stay on very well despite having fairly strong magnets (they're not stable laterally) and can be fiddly to line up when connecting so I only use them at my desk or other places where the phone will just sit on a flat surface relatively undisturbed while charging. In the car I use a Magnector X2 cable, which is better designed with contours that match the side of the phone, making it far more stable and easy to snap on. But the Magnector cable is $18, which is silly money for a charging cable and why I can't wait for Sony to do away with the whole magnetic thing altogether.
