[Q] Battery drain, who's the guilty? - G 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I've a XT1068, does anyone have the same problems with the battery?
I was not using my phone where the battery started to drop like that. I charge it, then unplug it and then went to bed.
Yes, I've wifi, bluetooth and 2 SIMs with one of them with data always on.
See pics attached.

Same for me. When I bought the phone I immediatelly upgraded to 5.0.2. After upgrading, I did a factory reset through Recovery. Android OS and Android System eat up most of the battery, whereas in normal cases it should be screen and standby (and perhaps some fewquently used app).

Looking at that first screenshot of the battery chart it looks like you have an alarm or wakelock keeping your phone awake when it should be sleeping. Take a look at my Moto G 2014 battery guide

Well that guide is great as a general recommendation. However, what we have here looks like a bug. Android OS and Android System should NEVER take more battery than standby and screen.

You are right. And I see that in my xt1032 that still runs on KitKat these wakelocks do not exist. Could this have to do with data wiping? I factory reset the phone from recovery AFTER the 5.0.2 OTA update. AFAIK it fully wipes data and cache.

It does. Install BetterBatteryStats from here and run it for a while. It'll give you details on every wakelock and alarm on the device and how much battery it is using. Then you can use amplify in the tutorial I linked to earlier to configure the wakelocks so they are not consuming as much battery.

Thanks a lot Duck86, but I think that for a brand new phone I should not need to do all these things to get decent battery life. As I said my old xt1032 on kitkat was is to handle two days of significant usage and most of all, if you did not use it the battery did not drain. By the end of the day, battery usage was topped by standby, screen and perhaps an app with frequent use. On top of that, 5.0.2 looks generally unstable compared to the utterly robust 4.4.4 that runs on my xt1032. I get noise and lag in call sounds for example, issues that were not even imaginable on xt1032/kitkat.
So I think I will try to fall back on kitkat. The problem is that I do not know which stock ROM I should install.
My Baseband version is:
MSM8626BP_1032.3105.93.00R EMEA_DSDS_CUST
My kernel version is:
3.4.42-g48d3b85
My system version is
22.21.28.titan_retaildsds.retaildsdsall.en.03 reteu
Build number
LXB22.46-28
Any clues?

It's probably gsam battery monitor that is doing all the wakelocks to gather data.

Nothing special, depends on what you were doing. To have a clearer view: Load your battery until it's full and let the phone rest for one or two hours. Make some screens than. You can see what kind of wakelocks disturb the sleep mode of the device.

"Who is the guilty?" Motorola?..
Guys you know about the bug with the gps? When you turn on and off the GPS on the stock rom and the GPS remain on and kills your battery until you restart the phone? Took me about 2 weeks to figure out.

[Q] High Android OS Battery Usage?

Hey guys, im currently running CM10.1 nightlies and I have noticed that in my battery stats, android os chews a lot of my battery.
I checked with better battery stats whats happening, and it shows that google services and google search is waking my phone a lot,
so i disabled then.
the issue still persists and i don't know what to do
someone shed some light?
I have heard that this problem is uniform across all android 4.2.2 devices?
EDIT: SOLUTION. just turn off wifi and mobile data if you want to sleep your phone.

Even though this is on stock, This thread will help (maybe)
Try disabling the backup services, as they tend to run for like half an hour each time you power up your phone, or maybe it does that everyday.

nope, all i see in wakelock detector and bbs is android os, nothing strange like hsic_mmc :S

I came across the same issue, where I was getting a quick battery drain. I went ahead and unticked auto sync and have wifi shut off via toggle and only turn it on when I need it. After checking the Android OS percentage, it went down by half and battery life now is insane, once in sleep mode, it preserves a lot of battery. I was at 100% at 8:15 am yesterday morning and today I am on 72%, granted I haven't used the phone that much but prior to the previously mentioned steps, I would probably be recharging as we speak!
Start BetterBatteryStats and check your kernel wakelocks - it could be the msm_hsic_host wakelock that is causing your battery drainage?

[SOLVED] Solution!
SOLVED!
After maaaaaaaany weeks of googling, searching, WakeLock monitoring, more searching...
I finally fixed what's causing this!
The wakelocks are named:
NlpCollectorWakeLock
NlpWakeLock
Those were the main battery drainers (those freaking suckers!).
They aren't that important to run in the background at all, it's just a location service by Google Now (you know, just so the NSA has more data from you).
It does not affect the device performance or function in any way (as far as I know but I guess it prevents Google Now from searching your location while your phone is locked).
The simple fix for all this:
Simply download "Wakelock Terminator" from the Play Store and run it. You also need Xposed for the installed module to run tho which means you also need a rooted device.
(Downside of the free version: You can only prevent one service from running unlimited wakelocks, for more you'll need the paid version. But because you'll most likely fix only the draining problem you won't need more anyways!)
Then simply go an search for "Google Play Services", tick "Prevent Wake Lock" and add the above mentioned services to the list.
After one day of doing this my phone battery lasts far longer now, draining only about 1-2% an hour instead of 8-10% as it was before.
If this worked for you please hit the "Thanks!"-Button! This is not for my own pleasure, it's for everyone else having the same issue and want to find a legit, fast, easy solution
Also, that's what the button is here for

Android OS battery draining

Hello guys, I write here again for another problem with my moto x. The battery of my telephone is draining too quickly and according to the data on my telephone it should be because of the Android OS, which is draining more than Screen. I attach some screenshot.
I add some more data. My telephone is a Sprint XT1056 unlocked to use it with a Vodafone sim in Europe. The version of Android is 4.4.2 and I can't upgrade otherwise I'd lose my unlocking. I think I use the Moto x without stressing it too much, but the battery drains really too quickly, sometimes in even less than 8h with 1h of screen and without gps. Can you help me? Thanks.
You need to use an app like BetterBatteryStats or Wakelock Detector to track down what part of Android OS is acting up. With those numbers, we should be able to help.

Judging by your battery graph in the first pic the phone isn't going to sleep. That solid blue line shouldn't be solid the entire time, it should have breaks in between when the screen isn't on or when something isn't running. Looks to me like you got a rogue app. Like mentioned before BetterBatteryStats is a great app to find the culprit. Also, high Android OS usage is known issue on 4.4.2. It's fixed in 4.4.4.
Yea
Android os should be about 3% on 444.
Try a safe boot. Then get app install history from play. There is some hog you need to find.
Android sys should be 6% but on 442 that you could deal with.

No, because I'm afraid to mess up with the sim unlock. If I lose it this telephone for me will get useless...
It says you're on 3G, it's possible that it's searching for an LTE signal, thus causing battery drain. If you're in an area that doesn't have LTE, you should probably switch it to 3G only mode. I'm not sure if the sprint model lets you do that through the mobile network menu, but if not, get an app called LTE On/Off for thunderbolt from the play store and it'll take you to a menu where you can switch to 3G mode so that it doesn't poll for LTE all the time. (assuming you haven't already done so)
You won't mess up your Sim unlock by flashing a recovery and rooting.
Then you'd be able to see more in depth battery stats with Gsam and gsam root companion.... Or other apps mentioned above.
But, android OS will rise with each feature /service you have enabled. Like location services Google now, and other Google Apps.
Try charging to 100, then turn off location completely and Google now... And see how it is for a day. I'm betting it drops way down. ?
Then go from there. Chances are apps are spamming location.
See post 2 and 3 in the Battery thread in my signature for tips. It's on the N5 section... But the tips are universal. ?
We will help you over there too. Just be sure to mention You're on a moto X. To avoid confusion. And post 4 has the screen shot examples for the best help.

Yup, you have terrible held awake time. And without root... We can't see what it is exactly.
52 minutes held awake in 4+ hours is awful. 52 minutes of held awake time should be over 24 hours... Not 4.

You can try it. Try helium to back up your apps first. But, it could be some app causing your troubles. Or its Google related.
I'd factory reset and only install a few apps a day after. See if it goes for a dive. Then you know it's one of the apps you installed that day. Process of elimination.
There was a way to use a version of wakelock detector from a windows pc to access the list of wakelocks on the moto x, which would normally require root. It only works tethered to the computer, and I haven't tested it recently but it worked on 4.4. The utility can be found here http://bit.ly/1h2Hzmw

I tried as you suggested: factory reset and installed only few apps, the problem seems the same, and the telephone is still awake, but the % on Android OS is dramatically lowered, I attach screenshots. In the meantime I kind of rooted with "towel pie root" so I have access to much more data with Gsam and Wakelock, that I both installed and I will run tomorrow for the entire day.

That actually depends on your usage. Since you are on stock, your battery should be awesome, but weird that it isn't (especially when you said that it is unrooted).
it could be that your battery has finally reached its state of dying. The way to confirm this is to try another ROM, but that is your decision
To answer to your question, it may make the issue go away.

For the sake of troubleshooting, would you like to root your ROM?
If you do, install Towelroot app on your stock (I am assuming 4.3 Jellybean) and root your device. Afterwards head to SuperSU on Google Play and install it. And proceed to updating the su binary to the latest one.
After your root setup is complete, reboot and install Wakelock Detector. Give it a root access and a refresh for the first time.
Allow your Xperia SP to drain its battery like how you would normally use it. After hours, please screenshot the content of the app and upload it here so I can inspect it
if i use my phone with something like wi-fi ,whatsapp .....etc (not heavy apps) how much time my battery must hold it?
thanks.

You might wanna give more details like what apps you got installed, your usage, your brightness level etc. Also wifi, whatsapp does drain battery. How much screen time were you getting before with the same config? How bad's the drain when the screen off? Like someone mentioned above, you could root your phone and try Wakelock Detector to see if something's constantly preventing your phone from going into deep sleep.
Also your battery could be a dud but like you mentioned you haven't had your phone for long so that probably shouldn't the issue but you might want to make sure of that before switching roms. No point rooting/unlocking your phone and flashing a new rom only to find out that the issue still persists but if you wanna try a LP rom nevertheless, you could always give it a shot.
Much like yourself, I am suffering from rather poor battery life myself but my issue is most likely a dying battery. I am telling you this cause I have tried about a dozen roms and it makes zero difference so changing roms isn't a surefire solution. I use Greenify, PowerNap, keep the brightness rather low plus use a bunch of other battery tweaks but it hardly matters. My battery drains rather quickly either way (screen on or off). Even when my phone's in deep sleep, I still get bad drain so check thoroughly before you make the switch.
Did you check which app or feature is draining more the battery?
Sometimes, doing a factory reset will solve the problem. Have you tried it? Make a backup first.

Worse battery life since the Oreo update

Since the update, I have definitely experienced worse battery life, especially overnight on standby/idle and also overall when I'm at home on WiFi in general, I have read a few posts about the November security patch causing worse battery on a lot of different phones so I don't know if it is because of that, I just hope either the December patch sorts it, or HMD make the battery optimisation better in the next update patch from them soon, has anyone else noticed worse battery performance since Oreo?
Doesn't seem any different to me ill be honest.
For me it even seems to be a little bit better than on Nougat.
I have stellar battery life all together but standby could be better. The other night I lost 3-4% over night and that is more than the usual 1-2% I'm used to on my phones. Not something to get upset about really but something I've noticed.
No battery drain here, my opinion seems the same good as on nougat to

Ok already using that, was looking for some sort of global switch.
All of my apps are in the whitelist and are allowed to do as they please, seems a pointless feature to me.

Not to me. I don't want the likes of Facebook running all the time. I'll check it when I can be bothered. Otherwise I want it dead dead dead.

Just turn off notifications for the app you are using, the only app i get notifications from is Gmail everything else can wait.
I was at 8 hours SOT yesterday with 32% battery left, like i said it seem a pointless feature.

I have stellar battery life all together but standby could be better. The other night I lost 3-4% over night and that is more than the usual 1-2% I'm used to on my phones. Not something to get upset about really but something I've noticed.

Battery on oreo is awesome, if you want less energy use during sleep use "naptime" from playstore.

Not just notifications I don't want Facebook or the likes doing anything in the background so for me useful that way. Not necessarily for battery.

If they aren't consuming battery what are they doing that is so scary you need to disable them from running in the background? Serious question BTW i am not taking the mic.

The point is I don't need them doing anything in the background, nothing, NADA, zip, no matter what it is they might be doing I don't need it.
The apps I do need are switched on.
This is personal preference buddy.

Same here, I have most of my apps disabled apart from things that actually need to be running like PingID for work authentication / MS Authenticator / emails and 4 or 5 other things.
Try "data saver" if you have that option in your OREO ROM
Yes I did say DATA saver
Go to Settings - type "data saver" in the search box - switch it on
Works magic for me with a standard OREO ROM and nothing else.
since 8.1 update, battery draining has been worse

Battery draining after oreo updat

Hello everyone,
I received Oreo update 3 days ago and I have noticed that my battery is draining since that update. For instance, when I use facebook it drains by 1% every 2 minutes and it was not like that before update. What should I do?
I really need to go back to nogut.
Any help?

I had the same when I first installed Oreo.
Then I went to Settings, Device maintenance , Battery, Battery usage and found that android system drained my battery. I un-ticked "Allow background activity" and fixed draining.
You may also give it some time to calibrate battery measurement.
After 6 days with Oreo, I can say it's a little bit better than Nougat regarding battery.

Thank you for your reply. I also noticed that Yesterday. Is it ok not to allow Android System in the background? Would that affect the usage of the phone?
Thank you again for your interest.

if you are not rooted then just flash your nougat file through odin... don't use home_csc...use csc...and others are pretty like same...
I'm facing this as well. I disabled all apps using background process.
Let's see it will solve this issue.

Do you use the built-in app power monitor in settings/battery?
Use Betterbatterystats to see what's going on. Additionally, try a day or two with wifi turned off. I had huge battery drains on nougat when wifi was on and with it off I got 5 days on a single charge!! Maybe the same bug carries over to Oreo? Not sure, but worth a try if you can afford the data usage.
I'm having the same issue, and it's not like Device Maintenance and BetterBatteryStats are showing anything suspicious at all. One night idle time is nice, then on other nights i find it having a decrease of 15%.

Your Android System drain is way too high...something wrong there for sure...
If you haven't already, do a full wipe/ factory reset. This fixes most problems, including battery drain, after a major update.

Have you tried better battery stats? Do you use the app power monitor in the Note 8 settings at all? It's got to be some of your apps or saved settings...

Wow!! Android system is killing it. Dude, I had the same issue on nougat. Not sure if it'll work on Oreo, but try it: turn off wifi completely. Use cellular if you can for a day or two. Do this after a full recharge so battery stats have resetted so you can see if that makes a difference.
Also, use Betterbatterystats and give it permissions on adb. Post screenshots from that. The one you posted already isn't telling at all.
I downgraded it to Nogut and I think I am fine now. F**k this update. I think this company is intending this sh*t to push up its sales.
Fix for battery drain for Note 8 after upgrading Oreo
1) Go to settings
2) Go to Apps
3) Click on the three dots located in the upper right hand corner.
4) Select "Reset App Preferences"
5) Power your phone off and on again and the battery draining problem should be fixed.

Have you tried it on your own ?
Yes. I am on my phone right now and have been on YouTube this evening with normal battery drain. After the update yesterday my battery was draining for no reason and I had to charge my phone three times. I remembered this fix from the last update when I didn't want to reset my device. I figured it had something to do with all of the Apps utilizing my location, so I wanted to do a reset of the Apps without resetting my device and it worked.
