Android 5.0 (Lollipop) Bootloader and KitKat Compatibility
Everyone wants Lollipop, however it is worth considering some of the possible consequences of upgrading via OTA update.
Bootloader:
A new Bootloader (BL) will almost certainly be included in the OTA update. It is also very likely no KitKat Kernel, stock or custom will be able to boot properly with the 5.0 BL. Perhaps the Kernel DEVs can find a workaround.
Root: (ETA: Unknown)
It may take some time to gain root access on Lolipop as on other devices this has required a custom Kernel. A custom kernel itself may require kernel sources to be released - something that has taken weeks / months in the past.
Xposed Framework:
Developer has said he will wait for CyanogenMod based on Lollipop before properly starting development of an ART version of Xposed. CM12 may take a few weeks to release. Expect to do without Xposed for at least a month, probably longer since root is also required (see above.)
Custom Recovery:
This has not been an issue before, but it is always possible a new Bootloader could break compatibility with existing Custom Recoveries. Obviously, you would not be able to restore a CWM / TWRP backup without a functional custom recovery; but even then, it is unlikely you will be able to boot your KitKat backup.
Custom ROMs:
This is another area that could be affected by a new Bootloader. It is unknown if existing custom ROMs will require new Kernels / system changes in order to work with the new BL - something that could take days, weeks or months.
Performance:
Currently the performance difference between KitKat and Lollipop is unknown. If the first release of Lollipop for Android One has performance issues, you may be unable to revert back to stock KitKat.Possible solution:
Wait for a flashable zip [NOT OTA Update zip] of Stock Android One Lollipop ROM - this would mean your Bootloader remains at it's current version and potentially allowing you to change 'back and forth' between Stock KitKat and Stock Lollipop. However, it is currently unknown if the newer BL is a requirement for Android 5.0 Kernels.
This is taken from the Moto G thread and all credits goes to @lost101.The sole motive of this is to create awareness about the new bootloader included in 5.0
Thanks For The Info @DC07 :highfive:
Thanks For The Information Bruda !!
This thing is only for device like motorola, samsung etc.. As I never saw same thing for nexus.. Motorola does not allow to downgrade so they update bootloader in every android version update.. I dont think it will be same for sprout
Let it arrive ,no point in discussions on thongs that are not confirmed

Nope. The bootloader was updated on my nexus 7 flo for the 4.4.2 OTA. Since this update is much bigger I think we'll have a bootloader update too.

Let him take his time. This will make our lollipops taste more sweet
doubts about lollipop arise
I'm just wondering.. I installed AMG Evo9 a while ago, and I want to install a stock based rom which has Android 5.0
My phone is rooted and with Recovery installed, However I can't unlock its bootloader since it won't allow me to, meaning I can't flash any custom Kernel.
Can I install a 5.0 Stock based rom which has a higher compilation version? I mean 14.4.A.0.2xx or something? Or it's gonna brick my phone?
If I can do so, could someone explain me how?
Thanks in advance.

Bumping this question, thanks.
Hi! I've d405n with CM12.1 installed. i'm from italy and i see that v20a (lollipop) KDZ for my device is avilable.
Now i'd like to know from everyone tried it, if it's a good idea to flash that firmware or is better stay on that custom ROM, ignoring Official Firmwares, (because i don't want to annoiyng me to rollback to kitkat, rooting, unlock bootloader, flash twrp and rom)
Please comment with bugs, issue or missing features of official firmware
Thank you!!!
hello everyone. You know Xperia Z3 is chosen by Sony devs to test their concept firmware. And it looks pretty much great. And it have aokp look with it and that makes it more faster and better. Though official one is good too. and Xperia Z2 and z3 has almost the same hardware. So it will be great if we have that concept ROM for our Z2 also. Though it is marshmallows and Z2 don't have any official marshmallows kernel yet. But previously with Xperia sp there was developer who made lock bootloader cm12 for Xperia sp. So hope devs will work or it. And we will finally have that concept ROM on our lovely Z2. Hope devs will work on it and port it for our Z2
Download the concept marshmallows firmware of Z3 from here
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_d8uWGbkaetbVNCUGFQbXI4N1k/view
I don't have much knowledge about the kernel build and stuff. So hope kernel developers will work on it. and we will get the rom for lock bootloader. Thanks all.
Are you sure that the provided file is for Z2 as you say? In the title is D6603.

Maybe my words aren't clear enough. the firmware is for Xperia z3 AND IT'S ADDED FOR DEVS TO PORT THE ROM FOR Z2
I personally think that the effort of porting the "closed source" kernel to z2 is too high considering that in about one month official marshmellow gets released by Sony which will most likely work better than some hacky port

I was thinking the same at first, but the official update will be the marshmallow version of the stock sony ui that we have now. The Marshmallow concept is a pure aosp like a nexus ui. Unless Sony's planning on ditching everything sony styled and making the aosp version the stock one? That'd be cool.
It seems be impossible, unless we have MM Z2 kernel, the touch won't work. Look at my video, if I didn't flash Z2 kernel, the touch wouldn't have worked on Z3's firmware, I had to flash Z2 kernel so I can use my phone with single touch only.

It won't work, of course, it's basic knowledge you need to know.
someone have the newest concept build and can upload it?

Mm z3's kernel is made for.Z3. And I don't know why battery life and things look better with z3 concept firmware. That made me think of it. We need kernel devs to create that kernel for us. It have to be for locked bootloader. then everything gonna be OK.

I have try flash 5.1 concept ftf, and Flashtool said cant flash the rpm.sin (kernel?) and install fail
And then I try to flash the ftf without kernel and flash the z2 .264 kernel, but the phone can not turn on, it stuck at SONY logo
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I didnt try 6.0 concept or maybe it will work?
BUT I dont think you can boot with z2's stock kernel because now we only have 5.1 stock kernel

Once it was. But now it's possible.
Take a look custom rom kernel cm11 on lock bootloader http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2735975
So it's possible. .

I think it applies to Xperia SP only. Not for the Z series.

I have flashed 6.0 concept and Flashtool cant flash rpm.sin too. When I excluded it, Flashtool flashed successfully but the phone did not boot (the Sony logo and Xperia logo didnt appear). I flashed the .264 kernel and Z2 was stuck at bootloader too. What is rpm.sin?
Sorry for my bad English.

NO
I used to own a xperia sp and i flashed that rom.
the reason of why XSP can use LBL kitkat is you can boot with XSP 4.3 stock kernel
you cant use custom on LBL device or you will brick your phone

It's depend what device and kernel, sometime it work and sometime it dont
i am sure that you cant use z2 stock kernel on z3 concept so it mean no.
or maybe we can wait until sony release stock 6.0 and try 6.0 stock kernel on z3 concept

rpm.sin is the kernel. we cant boot z3 concept rom with z2 5.1 stock kernel.
why we don't flash kernel AOSP 6.0 for Z2, link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xpe.../aosp-6-0-marshmallow-sony-xperia-z2-t3235951
Sony stock is different than AOSP.
rpm.sin doesnt needed for custom rom, only boot.img and system.img.

Because AOSP kernel cant use on LBL phone and we want port it to LBL phone
Since we now have an official sony kernel for MM and locked bootloader (from the z2 mm beta) would it be possible to boot the z3 concept rom with the z2 mm beta kernel?
Thanks
I have a Z3 COMPACT rooted with TWRP 3.0.2.0 and 23.5.A.1.238 firmware. I want to make preroot the new firmware for Greece 23.5.A.1.291 when it comes. My question is which recovery I should use with PRF CREATOR?
RECROOT V.4.zip or XZDualRecovery_2.8.zip? which is the difference of these two? Thank you please someone help me to keep my Z3 compact rooted.
I have the same problem/question.
Could anyone shed some light on this? To my understanding you'd probably need recRoot for MM and XZDR for LP
use RECROOT V.4.zip which work for mm. I remenber XZDualRecovery always has no updated one, it just is compatiable for LP
