Hello
I was thinking to myself, "Can custom ROMs be considered Linux distributions?".
I think they are, what do you think?

hey folks,
Looking at flashing my first rom, still deciding between serendipity, miui and CM7. In terms of stability, which one is currently the best? I know many are a matter of opinion. The one thing I cannot piece together is the talk of kernals and modems. Do you need to install these if you flash a custom rom? Do they come with the rom install?
This should be posted on the Q&A section.
Mod, please move.

I'm on Serendipity 7 right now and love it its extremely stable for what I use the phone for.
As for kernels and modems they usually come with the rom they are flashed when the rom is. The modem controls all of the radio aspects of the phone while the kernels runs various functions of the phone.
But questions like this should be in Q&A for future reference.

Few things:
- There is no "best" anything on XDA, it's all opinion, and both members and MODs tend to frown upon "what's the best XXXX" type threads
- This question should have been posted in "Q&A" not development
- It sounds like you need to READ quite a bit more before you try to go about flashing anything. If you're asking questions like "what is a kernel or modem?" you probably aren't qualified to start flashing yet. It's dangerous, and can turn your phone into an expensive coaster.
Welcome to XDA!
not worried about bricking as I've worked on a number of devices outside of android. Just looking for some quick answers. Didn't need three flames...
Your quick answers are already answered. The flames are not flames but someone frustrated by someone asking the same question that's been answered so many times its unreal. Seeing as how there is a thread conviently named how to flash a ROM over in the Q&A section the "flames" are warrented. If you want my opinion the best way to learn something is by just doing it. Read, read, and read some more. Honestly, you're lucky that the "flames" were as nice as the were.
This thread is probably about to be closed...
Please don't ask these sort of questions in the Dev section. People will get angry and they will tell you. This isn't about development at all so it has no need to be in this forum. To sort of answer your question, IN MY OPINION Samsung based ROMs will provide more stability than CM7/MIUI.

dont even try to flash your phone if you dont know the basics. especially a gb rom.just get someone to do it for you. BECAUSE WERE NOT GUNA DO IT FOR YOU.so stop with the noob post
My question may sound dumb at first, but, on second thought, it makes sense.
I find most of the developement ROMs are still on the old bootloader including CM10 and many others.
The new bootloader was taken up by Stefan and one other ROM only. I thought that the new bootloader would be the direction taken by LG in its latest yet to be released ICS, and have adopted it. But now with Stefan has stopped his rom support on XDA, I am wondering if I should switch back or wait a few weeks for ROM developers.
I am seriously looking for the intuition from seniors at XDA on this issue, because even RC's CM10 is based off old bootloader / partition layout. (pls correct me if i am wrong).
thaks for your inouts.
Milind
What are the changes in the new bootloader in the first place? What are its advantages and disadvantages?
Hi everyone. As the title says, I'm new to the moto x 2013 (xt1058). I have experience flashing roms and kernels with another device, so I'm not new to this kind of stuff.
I wonder whats the differecen between the two forum branches: "moto x 2013 android development" and "orgininal moto x 2013 android development".
My stock android is 4.4.2
Do you guys recommend me some roms, or should stay on stock?
I'm not a big fan of bleeding edge soft, but I'm VERY insterested on stability, smoothness, non-bug, non-lag sistems. (If you know MiniCM7 by nobodyatall, you'll get the idea).
So, with all that said, again...Do you guys recommend me some roms, or should stay on stock?
Thank you very much!
Somebody plz help. I'm not asking a difficult question

Whether you stick with stock or a custom ROM is your personal choice. Both have their own pros and cons, and there are plenty of roms to compare 'em all.
Ok, thanks! So, where can I find more stable and bugs-free roms ? (no matter if it is KK or LL)
What I understand from the link you gave, is that original forum has developers own work, and that make me think this is the forum for me. Am I right?

I see almost everything is experimental. Nothing to do here, I guess...
Hello,
a couple of days i asked something here and with your guys tips i believed to start approaching my goal.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/twrp-installation-went-badly-wrong.4381067/#post-86176511 was the original question which is related to this question but has not to be readed to understand my question here.
The only im looking for since a while:
Are Custom Partition's and Custom ROM's the same?
Hello guys! I have been eyeing this device for a while now but why is there no support for custom roms at all? Even TWRP there is none? I was wonding there might be an official answer on this or we're just waiting on something? Or has everyone just legit gave up on this device?
Ok sorry please ignore. It has been answered here already. Thank you!
