Sluggish/unusable performance after apps2sd on Cyan 4.2.2

I got a shiny new class 6 16GB sd card. I partitioned it at about 15.5GB fat32 and 512 ext2, using the info in cyanogen's wiki: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Apps2SD_On_CyanogenMod
From there I did the ext3 and then the ext4 updates.
Although I've searched for answers for a few hours now, I've been unable to determine why the device slows to a crawl at each point of user interaction at this point. Even unlocking the screen can time out...
I backed out the changes and copied the apps back over to internal storage and everything is zippy again, so at this point I am looking for suggestions. One thing I noticed was that when I used parted to delete the ext partition so the apps wouldn't go back to the card on the next boot, it still listed the ext partition as ext2. Can someone running ext3 or 4 let me know whether parted lists their partitions as such or if they are always reported as ext2?
What other techniques should I try? I would very much like to make this work as I get constant low-space warnings in my current setup. Thanks.

just used parted to check and it says ext4 .... try using this guide .. worked really well for me to partition my sd ... also if you're having all these problems try wiping dalvik-cache and even data and your ext* partition if it comes down to it

A more careful walk through the partitioning process and I can confirm that everything works as expected, as well as confirming that if upgrade_fs fails, then ext2 is a total dog. One particularly confusing thing was tracking down whether a swap partition was needed or not, but on the latest cyan roms it isn't so I skipped that one.

Problems after apps to SD EXT2 format

I have some problems with my Dream now after an format fore EXT2 so I can use apps to sd.
I have CyanogenMod 4.0.4
Iv'e used an guide and console for formating my SD card 8gb class 6.
I've made an 7.2gb fat32
700mb ext2
50mb linux swap
After that I converted the ext2 to ext4, checked everything with print and it was ok.
Than when I've rebootet my phone it woudnt start up, it came to the android in blue, and that blinked some and than the screen went black.
So my plan was to upgrade the 4.0.4 to 4.2.5 anyway so I did that.
My phone was an 32B so I used the HTC_ADP_1.6_DRC83_rooted_base.zip
Everything went great with that, but when I tried restarting the problem was still there...
Dont know what to do know?
Remove the ext4 partition?

Try restoring your memory card to original and then try to partition it again.

Ive tried to restore my memory card, no help.
Ive tried to boot the phone with no memorycard, still no go...
Dont know what to try anymore..

1) Format the entire card as fat32
2) add other partitions
3) Wipe from recovery
4) Flash your rom

Ok sry i thought this was the place to ask with this.
I got the phone booting up with 4.2.5 and it worked great.
All my programs waws gone so I need to install them again, but no worry.
So I now tried to format the memorycard again, looks like it didnt work again and im at my problem again...
Now it hangs on the T-mobile screen, so I guess out with the battery and try an reboot before I start all over again...
Maby I'm not supposed to have programs on my SD?

make sure you partition properly.

you can install amon_RA's recovery and let that partition your card for you

Ive sendt my phone back to originale software, and than upgraded again, and it seems like it's 4.2.5 and the ext partition that is the problem.
If I change SD card to one without the ext partition it's no problem to start after an whipe..
I've tried reinstalling 4.2.5 but no luck, maby I shall trie an ext3 insted of ext4?

Partition SD card on Windows for people who can't be bothered to do it properly ;)

Firstly, BlaY0 has a great tutorial on how to do this properly, I suggest you do that to learn something.
Secondly, I cannot confirm that this is 100% safe. BlaY0's method should be 99% safe, I don't know about this as it is all automatic. BlaY0's method is tried and tested, this is not. I only used this method as I had a new SD card and I was in a hurry (exams coming up ) and I didn't have time to remind myself of BlaY0's method, and CWM only allows you to create up to 512mb partition. Also, I had a new computer, and I don't have time to set up ADB all over again.
Anyway, this is a method for people who don't want to use ADB to partition their SD card for A2EXT or DATA2EXT (a.k.a. apps2sd, etc etc), and are using Windows. If you're running linux, you could use something like gParted to partition it, not sure about OS X though. This method will allow a Windows user to create an EXT partition on their SD card alongside the FAT partition.
1) Download and install Minitool Partition Wizard, from here.
2) Open the program and delete all partitions from the SD card (which you will have inserted into the computer using an adapter or something). DO NOT DELETE THE PARTITIONS FROM THE HARD DISK! MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DELETING. Oh, and make sure the SD card is backed up
3) Create a FAT32 primary partition. You decide how big you want it, but I'd advise you leave 1024mb (1gb) for the EXT partition.
4) Create an EXT2/EXT3/EXT4 (you decide) primary partition. Use up the rest of the space on the SD card.
5) Click assign/OK/whatever and wait for it to complete
6) You now have your partitioned SD card ready for an A2SD ROM!
7) You need to assign a drive letter to the FAT32 partition. Not sure about the EXT partition. At first I forgot to do this and my card didn't show up in Windows, though Partition Magic can still see it.
Like I said, do yourself a favour and use BlaY0's method here, but if you're lazy or you don't have time or ADB doesn't work anymore, use this.

Nice one m8. You mentioned that CWM doesn't offer adding partitions bigger than 512 MB. Well, you're right but that's why I made a customized version of fake-flash that can do bigger... to 1 GB. It can even add second ext partition for some exotic types of data2ext. On top of that I added auto block alignment which is described in my guide (the manual one) so no more calculations and manual labour

Didn't know that, good to know, for those of us still using data2ext, this is important...

Wish this was up earlier, spent an hour repartitioning my card using parted.Couldn't upgrade to EXT3 and ended up using CWM 3.0.2.8 to do it instead lol

What CWM is using under the hood for partitioning is actually parted.

Plugged it in my phone,
Ran ADB shell
# a2sd --enabled, rebooted
on reboot nothing seemed to have changed... went back to ADB shell
tried a2sd --free it says A2Sd is not active ...
a2sd -- enabled again and it says it is enabled but not active
so im guessing it cant read or recognize the EXT3?!
Any clues... i didnt want to move my Dalvik to SD ... should I try EXT4 or even EXT2?

Take me through what you did, step by step. You say you reserved 1G for EXT3, but did you actually format it as another partition?

It has been mentioned here like a gazilion times, boot up your device with logcat and see the first few lines...there is your answer!
Google how to wait for the device with logcat

1) Downloaded and installed Minitool Partition Wizard from your link. I got the free home edition
2) backed up my SD card and Open the program and delete my SD card partition ( which is in a card reader)
3) Created a FAT32 primary partition of 69xx MB and left the rest 1024 MB for the other unallocated space
4) Right click on the Unallocated Space to create an EXT3 as primary partition with the default cluster size.
5) At this point, it showed 2 partition on my SD, one with the drive letter for windows FAT32, and the 2nd one Ext 3 with 1GB and Primary. Clicked OK and Apply and wait for it to complete.
6) once complete , put it in phone, plugged usb and ran adb shell
7) ran a2sd --enable, it said reboot phone.. i made a mistake to reboot by adb the first time but then did the whole process again a 2nd time using reboot from the phone....
Tried logcat using this command "adb -d logcat>mylogfile.txt"
couldnt find the file anywhere ... if i dont redirect to the txt , it goes too fast to read and there's soo much debug messages what do i need to look for?
I thought it would save me time to get it done through windows... but its taking me as much time it w0uld probably get me with the manual way...
i'll give it a try tomorrow...

Tbh I'm really not sure. One thing I forgot to mention in the guide is that you should assign a drive letter to the FAT32 partition or it won't show up in Windows. I didn't assign one to my EXT4 partition though, and DATA2SD is working great for me. Try deleting all partitions from the SD card and start again. It'll only take 10 minutes, and if it still doesn't work just use the manual way.

Yeah i assigned a drive letter to FAT32...
Also the FAT32 , was my first block allocated partition, the 2nd partition was EXT3... i will redo the whole process and recreate EXT4 instead.
"DATA2SD is working great for me" ... you mean "A2SD working great for me" ... right? unless i'm missing something else that i needed to run..
ps: I recalled, after it was not working, i took out the sd and put it back in the reader to open MiniTool, it showed EXT2 instead of EXT3 ( which i was sure i chose )... and what's weird is it was reporting used space like 41MB... so obvisouly, the ROM wrote something on it...
Formatting it again to EXT3, didnt delete the 41 Used space, but it did convert it back to EXT3 ...probably nothing but mentioning as well

I suggest you start over, something seems to have gone wrong.
A2SD is where the apps are stored on the EXT partition.
DC2SD is where the dalvik cache is also stored on the EXT partition.
DATA2SD is where the entire /data partition on the phone is stored on the EXT partition of the memory card.
Partitioning the SD card with a FAT32 partition and EXT partition is done first, then you decide which one is for you. DATA2SD does have one or two issues, such as the risk of corruption - you'd then have to completely reinstall the ROM. A2SD and DC2SD are fine but I still found myself running out of internal memory.

i gave up and used ROM Manager to create my partition ...i couldnt set it to 1G because 512MB is maximum but it was painless to create.
it asked me to create a swap partition... i've read somewhere that swap partition is useless or barely used in newer android os? do you guys have any swap partition if so how big are they?
Also, did you move Dalvik cache to sd? isnt it slower on SD? i mean shouldnt dalvik cache be on RAM whihc i assume is faster than any external sd?

I used the full DATA2SD, which includes Dalvik2SD.

ok so sorry for a double post but im having an issue partitioning.
32 gb card san disk brand new
primary Fat32 10gb
primary Ext2 rest of space
once mini tool is done it sats successful but shows the sd card as Bad disk?!?

Can you actually have a 22gb ext partition? This might be something to look into to see if you can do it.
Edit: this got me interested so I searched myself, yes you can but apparently it depends on the chosen block size and hardware limitations, so u may have an issue with either.

[Guide]How 2 Create EXT3 for the Salsa only! * Increased Internal Memory*

Ok seems many usrs here have the same problems over and over again. so heres a tut!
This will probably cover many other topics but simplified here as much as i can.
You Must have the following to get this to work:
ROOT
Recovery 5.0.2.6
busybox installed.
if you have non of these...do not attempt any of this thread till you have!
To start with.
Creation of EXT3 Partitions.
you will need Minitool Partition Wizard. Mini Tool Partition Wizard Download
This is a harddrive/diskspace program allowing accurate modification of disk space.
Never create an EXT3 in CWM, as this will create whats known as a swap drive.
this causes the bootloop. Hence the non boot!
EXT3 has to be set as primary drive not logical.
Size allowance recommendations (personal choice, but this is after a few findings and results given by Salsa users)
SD Card Size.................................EXT3 Size
2GB......(Class 2).............................250MB
4GB......(Class 2-4)..........................500MB
8GB......(Class4-6)...........................500MB-1GB
16GB....(Class8-10).........................1.2GB​
WARNING, anything over 1.5GB will result in serious problems and SD damage
This also works around class types of SD Card. the higher the class the faster it works, there are various brands offering different class cards, find a fast and big card for best performance. I currently use Class 8 16GB with 1GB Ext3 with little/no lag
Wise idea before this to make an SD backup, if done correctly your data will not be affected...if you screwed up...you'll loose everything...so back it up!
To start with,
Remove Sd Card and use and SD Reader and insert into your computer USB Slot.
Open Minitool Partition Wizard.
Resize your sd card accordingly leaving 1.2-1.5gb of unallocated space. Apply the actions.
Now you have the unallocated space, reformat the space in EXT3 and set as Primary drive. Apply Actions.
Now normally the Application throws your sd out and says bad drive......this is sometimes normal so don't panic.
Reinsert your Sd in Phone and boot into recovery only
Data2sd script
theres 2 scripts available for these roms.
htc-data2sd-ext3 or data2whatever by m1ndh8x4r.
2.1 Roms work well with htc-data2sd-ext3 script with no problems.
data2whatever works really well with 3.5 sense Roms (Bens/M1nds)
*****There is a warning with this data2whatever script....When using this script, you will notice after a short period, that you cannot update or install any more apks. This is due to a Dalvik error within the script on Deodexed roms, currently it cannot be fixed, you have been warned*****​
these can be used easily but the following rules must be applied.
You must flash the rom firstly by the 3 wipes...regardless!
flash the rom as normal and reboot full, letting the rom fully build it self and load up... ie input your details/sign in wifi etc.
check it out for a few mins while your waiting...hey even make a backup lol!
OK now reboot in recovery and flash the chosen script....DO NOT WIPE ANYTHING!
once flashed reboot normally.
it will boot, it may take up to 5-10mins but it will boot. if by any chance you a boot loop at the boot animation screen then you have an EXT3 fault and you must redo the EXT3 Partition in Minitool to proceed again.

Trying to do this with fdisk on linux
It works but runs slowly for some reason
I have a 2GB cards, first partition is about 1.4 for normal /sdcard the remaining .4GB for /data
Both partitions are start aligned on 2048 sectors

Issue - applications get corrupted after restart
I am facing strange issue. I did everything described above and have /data on sd. But everytime I reboot something happens to most apps. They are installed but when I try to launch any of them I got errors and application closes. I need to reinstall EVERY app and they work until next reboot. Any ideas about the cause or what to check ? At this point I am trying not to discharge or reboot my phone by it;s impossible to keep it that way.

thats a rom issue.
What rom are you running?
Are you using a Data2sd script? if so which one?
Are you using links2sd?

no dont lol...ok sounds a bit stupid but have u got root? because what your describing is and apps2sd thing...which u cant get on stock rom....but if u dont have full root....then this sort of thing does happen....or...you got a faulty ext3 partition...

Of course I have a root - it works perfectly. I created the partition according to above instructions (I mean this thread). My ext3 partition is about 800 MB and 3200 MB is for FAT32. I did not create swap - just fat32 and ext3 with Partition Wizard. I used htc-data2sd-ext3.zip in I think normal way - phone reset, installing busybox, reboot, installing script with recovery - done. Everything is perfect until next reboot.

sounds like a problem with your rom my friend....hard to tell without seeing it really...
have you thought about changing the rom itself?

either that or find your ruu and reinstall stock again!

Funny thing
I used my previous card (smaller - just 2 GB) and there's no such behaviour as with my 4GB. Smaller one is Sandisk, bigger one is Kingstone - both known for good products. So switching ROM is rather not an option. There's something about SD but I can not figure out what...

I have created 6gb of fat32 and copied ROM and data2sd-ext3.zip then formatted remaining 1gb space in ext3. When I tried to install zip from recovery mode it throws "E: can't mount /sdcard/"

how did you make the partitions? and are they set as primary?
what class sd card is it? you need a class 8 or 10 on that size.

I used mini tool for partition. I set fat32 as logical and ext3 as primary. I have 8gb class 10 SD.

Shrink the ext3 to 750mb and set all partitions as primary.

Yep now I can see my data in SD card. Another problem I triple wiped and flash arc rom again, and given detail/sign in. When trying to flash script in recovery mode, it asks for busybox in some sys folder. I don't have busybox and also script installed, but ext3 memory not reflects in as main memory. Am I used different script or I need to install busybox, if so how to do that.?

I installed busybox @ system/xbin and flashed script, it worked. Finally my internal memory problem solved:thumbup:
I request to add installing busybox step and download link for script in tutorial.

I used data2sd without without any problem for past two days, suddenly today some apps force closing. Instagram app show error msg like"unfortunately this device's filesystem is reporting a problem." and pointing to this url "bit.ly/igfilesystem".
pls help.
I'm using arc V2 ROM, class 10 8gb sd, with 750mb of ext3.

contact instagram with a logcat or report for them to check

[Q] ext4 partition help

Hey guys,
Lately I've been doing some read about the benefits of partitioning a SD card. I decided to try but got stuck at the very beginning of the process. I've tried searching for a similar question in our forum but got no answer to my question.
Ok, so I backed up my (16gb class 4) SD Card. Then I decided to use GParted to format/partition my SD card, first I got an error saying I cannot create more than 1 partition without having to delete all partitions first. So I did, and created a GPT partition table, then first created a FAT32 partition, then a 1gb EXT4 partition. I rebooted but got the error saying my SD card was damaged and I must reformat. Then I tried doing this with MiniTool Partition Wizard. Same thing, I couldn't create more than 1 partition, then I reformatted and exact same thing happened. I'm thinking that probably the ROM I'm using does not support this feature. I have Link2SD installed already. I followed almost every partitioning guide here but of course each one is for a specific device and so on.
So here I am, hoping to get some help. I promise I learn quite fast and don't make same questions twice. I appreciate your time in advance.

Why do you want to partition your card? Just use titanium backup or something to move your apps.. Or is there any other benefit?

I've been reading different opinions about it. But I don't see a consensus. So I wanted to try for myself and decide. Would it make a difference if I use Link2sd instead of Titanium? I have Rom Toolbox Pro but I've read it doesn't move apps quite well.

I used titanium to move my apps to sdcard. The only difference as far as i know is that you can't use your apps when the sdcard is mounted in the pc. Which is fine coz when I'm transferring some files, I don't really need to play games on my phone.
I didn't notice any performance difference either.
But take care of what apps you are transferring. Don't transfer anything important like launchers.

Ok. I moved them with Link2SD. So far the only problem I've had is that some apps take longer to launch, specially after rebooting.
