Face Unlock Straight to Home Screen - Nexus 6 Themes and Apps

Hey XDA'ers,
I just picked up my N6 a few days ago.. I've been on Nexus devices after I gave up on the Galaxy S3. Never looked back! (Except for my CM12 LG G3 )
So here is my question to you all. Has anyone created or integrated app/code that once your face is recognized, unlock to home screen without a swipe? I was comparing the iOS finger unlock with my fam this weekend and it would be nice not to swipe up even though your face has been recognized.
If its not implemented, I can donate some money for someone to create something like that if plausible. Maybe a bounty if others are interested.
Thanks for taking a look!

Is that not the default behavior when you select face unlock as your security? I haven't used it in a little while however I am sure that is how it works. Turn on phone, look at it, boom home screen.

Nope. I use face unlock right now. Once it recognizes your face, it allows you to swipe up. It didn't automatically unlock.

Couldn't this pose a risk of unlocking when unintended? Perhaps you just want to see notifications on the lock screen quickly and see if you actually want to unlock and act? Or what about changing the track in the lock screen music player?

I see your point, however if someone were to make an app or bake it into a ROM, there could be a "hold off for __ seconds" before it checks for a face and goes to home screen. For instance, you could make it zero if you want immediate unlock, 10 seconds to check notifications. And if you didn't want to unlock and just check notifications, you would just hit the icon so it stays locked until you swipe up at that point (how it is with 5.0 at the moment.

Then I would be too impatient when I want to skip the lock screen and just swipe anyway - defeating the purpose. Swipe is faster than wait 10 seconds to auto-unlock.

Again, its only for users who want to utilize that "feature". I don't know, maybe I'm the only one who cares about this haha.

Similar thought: I'd like to have no lock screen at all when smart lock unlocks the phone with trusted device/location as well.

I think it just makes sense! If you don't want it, simply deactivate the feature, right? I'm starting my developing classes later thus summer. Maybe I'll be able to cook something up if nothing shows up by then haha.
Thanks for your interest guys, but it looks like not many are interested :/

+1 definitely would love someone to fix this

Bump because I want this, I can't figure how to do something like this with tasker.
What I want:
Condition: Lockscreen locked with pattern, trusted face enabled and triggered.
Scenarios:
1. Notifications present? Remove pattern but allow me to swipe to unlock when I'm ready. (Current behaviour)
2. No notifications? Go straight to homescreen without any interaction as soon as my face is detected. (New behaviour)

I've been trying every combination of tasker and secure settings I can think of, but there's no way I can detect when smart lock is triggered with the built-in settings.
http://nelenkov.blogspot.com/2014/12/dissecting-lollipops-smart-lock.html
I read that, and there seems to be a per-user trusted flag that's edited by smart lock, if tasker somehow could read it, we could trigger actions with it.
There problem is I don't know where the flag is or how to read it, I'm a bit out of my league here, maybe you are more knowledgable in this matter.

Take a look at the Stock LG G2/3/4 ROMs, this is their default Face Unlock behavior. I came from the G2 and am having withdrawals, partially because of this feature.

Pattern lock only

I want to completely disable the regular slide lock, and use pattern lock only. I downloaded the "No Lock" app from the market but this disables both the slide lock and the pattern lock. I want to remove the slide lock and retain the pattern lock. The slide lock provides no phone security if someone walks by and picks it up, and with the pattern lock enabled you have to do do both it and the slide which is kind of a pain in the ass. My old Samsung Moment didn't need to do both...I could just pick one or the other. Any suggestions are appreciated.
With just pattern unlock enabled you don't have to slide to unlock too..I have pattern enabled and I'm not sliding as well..no need for a separate app
/Droid3
I've been unable to come up with that. How do I disable the slide-lock? Everytime I enable the pattern lock, I still have to complete the slide-lock and then do the pattern as well.
Which ROM?

Just stock right now. I do have the device rooted but I haven't had a chance to get recovery installed and go to a ROM (Just got it friday)
Ah. Try a custom ROM. That may get what you want.

I'm on cm9 if that helps lol

CM9 still has the same issue as far as having to pull the slider across the screen and entering the passcode/pattern. The only other option available on CM9 is the keyboard slide unlock, but I don't think that will help him either.
I don't think there is a way to get to the pattern/passcode screen without pulling the slider across the screen first to let the system know that you want to unlock the phone. Pressing the unlock button on the top of the phone still takes you to the screen to pull the slider. As far as I know this is standard for not only stock android, but all of the ROMs as well.
I use the app NoLock from the market to disable my lockscreen (stock ROM), but enabling pattern lock forces me to use the lockscreen as well. I wonder why the one is dependent on/tied to the other.

Wow, okay. My comment was based solely on personal experience with the android software. I'm not a dev, but I've been rooting my android and using custom roms since the Original G1 came out, and I've never seen an unlock screen that doesn't have a slider. I'm not calling you a liar, but in my experience, Custom ROM or stock, I've always had to drag the slider across the screen to get to the pattern unlock.
I removed my pattern lock because I hated having to both pattern and slide. I imagine there is a file somewhere we can edit to fix this. Anyone know what files/apk controls the lock screens

Well, would you mind explaining how you got it to work like that then? Obviously I've never seen it work like that, and the OP can't get it to work either.
My previous phone, a Samsung Moment didn't require the slide and pattern lock both together, I could enable either one stand alone. It was a custom rom and was 2.3 based. Other than that I don't have much more info...
Instead of No Lock, try No Lock Screen. Similar functionality. I used it when I just had Go Locker. By default, one would have to unlock go locker, unlock android slide unlock, then enter the pattern. No Lock Screen effectively removed the default lock screen and kept the pattern.

I go into security..hit lock or lockscreen (or whatever its called)..then change to pattern..put in my pattern then voila I'm done..I don't do anything special its just what happens..its what happened on all my other phones too so idk what you guys are doing different
/Droid3
Any progress on this? I'm using default CM9 as well and face the same issue. However, on some ROMs which are based on CM9 I do not have to slide and use pattern together.
Same issue here
This has annoyed me A LOT since i bought my Droid 3. For what i read, it is embeded inside motorola software, that slide to unlock feature cannot be removed. We are used to see Samsungs, where the its possible to set the only unlock mode to pattern or pin... well... not in Motorola. And after a while you will notice that even the apps that are made to remove the slide-to-unlock sometimes fail. So, to solve this, we would need someone with A LOT of knowledge on programing and Motorola APIs, maybe even have to mess with the kernel... =(

Already Exist? Gear out of range, require pw to unlock phone

I can't remember if I've seen this as possible; seen this as a want; or it already exists.
I don't use a lock screen on my phone at all. Sometimes I worry about security, but not enough to deal with a lock screen all the time.
Solution would be that if your phone is out of Bluetooth range of your watch, then you hit a lock screen (with password). If you leave your watch at home or something, then you get to enter your password when you turn on your phone. When you have your watch on, no lock-screen.
This already out there somewhere? Wonder if Tasker could do something like this.
Looking at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=955092 with Bluetooth plugin, but is there something like this in the Gear store somewhere?
This feature is included in Gear Manager. I use it and it works great.

I just saw the option, but 1 problem - it seems to force you to use a slide unlock when the gear is in range, and pattern unlock when it is not.

Thanks for the replies. Hmm - additional security vs pain of lock screen.
Question I'll have to go look up - I haven't used a lock screen since I was going crazy in my Widget Locker days. I remember reading a lot about being able to customize the screen a bit and/or add some more basic info - how customizable is tge default lock screen nowadays?
Edit: Nevermind, I just went to lockscreen to turn on 'swipe' and got a page full of stuff that disappears when you select 'none' (which is where I was a minute ago...)

Did anyone find a way yet to use a pin rather then pattern lock to use with autounlock? anytime I activate autounlock it prompts for a pattern which is not what I like. I want to use a pin if possible...
Maybe try this app?

I'm not sure if it only disables the lockscreen when you don't have password on, hopefully there's some settings you can mess around with.

Is there a way to remove the startup swipe screen while keeping screen lock?

I'm on Marshmallow and use SmartLock, so under the right conditions no unlock is required. However, at switch on there is nevertheless always still a screen to be swiped away (clock and emergency contact). Does anyone know a way of eliminating that stage, so that switch on goes directly to the desktop?
Thanks.

Go to Settings --> Security --> Screen Lock --> Choose your desired Screen lock --> You should then see a screen like the following, select No Thanks and your device will still be locked but you won't have to enter your Screen Lock when starting the phone. I hope this helps!

Many thanks. I do already have that setting set to "No thanks", and indeed, when I switch on I do not have to put in my code. However, there is still always a screen (clock and emergency contact info) that has to be swiped away. It doesn't require a pin or patten, it just has to swiped away. And that's what I'm trying to get rid of.
Why would you want to get rid of a screen which will tell people how to contact you if you lose your phone...?

I'm only talking about when I'm at home and SmartLock is operational. If I lose my phone in my own house, I don't need my contact details on screen! At all other times the regular pin required screen works fine.
I'm just trying to get to a point where, when I'm at home and SmartLock is doing its thing, I can switch on directly, without any additional screens at all.

Yes, that's what we want. We need Google for that. Because the only way to bypass the 'lock screen swipe' is to disable all lock options.

Thanks. In which case it's a shame that enabling/disabling the lock screen isn't a single operation, but requires putting in the pin code. Otherwise it wouldn't be difficult to setup an if/then automation; "If I'm at home, then switch off lock screen; if I'm away from home, then switch on lock screen".
But since that's not possible, I guess I'm scuppered. Unless anyone has any ideas ... A third-party app, perhaps?

There are unlock apps in the playstore, but that kind of apps need root access to bypass the lock screen.

Unfortunately I don't believe that any automation/macro app would be able to do that, because switching on SmartLock requires a sequence of actions under Settings, including twice entering a four digit code. I've never used Tasker, so I may be wrong, but surely that's not possible even for that app?
I may well be wrong, since I managed only a few simple tasks with the direct-buy Tasker (i.e. non-Play Store) and then lost the key, and the developer had also lost my registration, so I stopped using it. But it should be possible to create a Tasker task along the lines of "at home don't lock" which should remove the need for a code entry - I'll have to defer to our colleagues who regularly use Tasker.
Thank you very much for that. I've had play with "AutomateIt" which I currently use, and which is a simpler version of "Tasker", and in fact it offers the same screen lock/unlock feature that you discribed. I tried it, it works, however when the screen lock is unlocked, I nevertheless still have to wipe away the clock/contact info screen, so I'm afraid I'm back at square one again.

Using "Swipe" as the "Screen Lock Type" deletes all fingerprints for app autho!

Using "Swipe" as the "Screen Lock Type" deletes all fingerprints for app autho!
I'm coming from several previous Notes. Most recently the 8. They made a small change to the settings menu. In the 8 the "Biometrics" settings were within the "Lock Screen" menu . Now on the 9 "Biometrics and Security" have their own category. But they have also changed something major it seems...and I hope I'm wrong. When you select "Swipe" as the "Screen Lock Type" it has to "Remove Data" and delete the recorded fingerprint(s). It makes it seem like that if you use them for apps you have to come back and redo the fingerprints for that purpose. But as soon as I do that it automatically switches the lock type back to "Fingerprint". It a vicious cycle.
I have always only used "Swipe" as my unlock method. I have also always liked using finger print for authentication with whatever apps utilize that. I'm pretty bummed right now. Hopefully I'm not the only one with this issue and you guys can dig in and see if I am missing something.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks

I have the same issue and am looking for a remedy. They actually took away the option to have swipe to unlock but keep the biometric data for the Note 9. This is a definite downgrade and hoping that samsung or someone comes up with a fix for it.

Exactly - you can't use biometrics in other apps unless you have a secure lock actually running on your phone. Want to change it to swipe to unlock? They make you delete all of your biometrics. Frustrating.
I have been looking for a work-around to this issue. Thought maybe a lockscreen app that offered swipe to open would work. Have yet to find one that has the option available though. Plus I don't want to have to deal with another app running on top of everything just to have a swipe to open lockscreen. Hope Samsung fixes this issue soon!

I DL'd, installed "no lock". Set it to "Locking Enabled". Went to my lockscreen settings and set my lockscreen to come up immediately upon the display turning off. Hit the power button to get off the AOD and to the lock screen, and lo and behold I am at the swipe to unlock screen just as it used to be on my Note 8. Swipe to unlock works perfectly, and my biometric data is still preserved for my misc apps I use fingerprint to unlock (banking apps, etc).

I myself do not use any type of phone lock, but, the locking on a per-app basis makes sense, for whatever app you deem necessary.
The obvious come to mind (Banking/email/messages) so,I definitely see the need.
This may change my mind,as I cannot stand to use a general lockscreen/PIN/pattern/fingerprint/etc..... to wake it up each time I use it.

I also do not use or like a secure lockscreen (pin/pattern/fingerprint/etc) on my lockscreen. But I do like to swipe to unlock only to keep accidental unlocks from happening in pocket, etc. With the swipe to unlock that keeps those accidental unlocks down to basically zero. However, I do utilized secure locking on banking apps, etc. I use these daily, many times a day normally, and would never want them to be able to be accessed by someone who got my phone somehow. So having those securely locked (I use fingerprint with PIN as my backup) is a huge plus for me.
Again, can't thank you enough. This solved a frustrating problem for me and I am sure many others!

Thanks KOLIOSIS for the solution. I used this app during the time there was no "none" option too. The downside is that the CPU will not sleep, thus drain the battery.
I'm willing to explore this further, but I'm stuck.
The basic lock security I have to add in order to register my FP is pattern lock. After that I followed the steps as you stated:
1) Set the No lock app to "lockscreen enabled"
2) Set the "Lock automatically" to "immediately"
Anything else I miss out? Appreciate the help.
Thanks~!

All I did was download the apk then add my fingerprints. Done. It switches the screen unlock method to "fingerprint, pin" like usual but I guess this app overrides that and allows me to unlock with just a swipe

Viewing notifications on lock screen while locked

If I have the phone on my desk where it can't scan my face and unlock, is there any way to reach over to view and dismiss notifications? Currently if I double tap the screen it just goes straight to trying to scan my face, but it only shows a notification icon and no contents. I can pull down the notification shade and check it that way, but that's an extra couple of steps. Am I just out of luck if I want to use face unlock?

I'm seeing the same thing. Haven't found a way around it. There's a setting in face id that you can check that asks you to confirm unlock when it scans your face, but, it isn't working apparently. This is definitely one of my gripes so far.
i think i have a fix for you guys if its sitting more or less flat and you wave/hold your hand over the top it will activate the screen with out it scanning your face its part of the motion sense options i believe

It will activate the screen, but it'll only show the notification icon, not the contents.

Try swiping down on the screen. Notification should appear at the top & you can view or dismiss.

Yes, I already mentioned that in the OP. I'd prefer to skip that extra step.
I have just switched from a OnePlus 7 Pro and I am confused by this too.
Is it not possible to view notification content directly on the screen without pulling down the shade every time?
Disabling 'Skip screen lock' makes the phone behave like other androids without face lock. You can read and interact with your notifications. But it's an extra step to unlock the phone.

Good catch! I'm going to do this for a while and see whether I prefer this and having to swipe up, or just let it unlock.

Yeah, I tried it and realized I like the skip lock screen feature more. I think it's a bug and have raised it to Google via the feedback option. Hopefully they fix it.

This is definitely the better way IMO. It'll probably save battery, and I don't have to be on the home screen every time. I do already miss the one step unlock though. My 3xl, I would just grab it and hit the fingerprint scanner at the same time. This one I have to swipe now. Oh well, not sure there is any other way.
