colorful notifications

i was shocked to see a colorful notification today.
how come other major apps like gmail, what's app, Facebook and so on don't have such GUI such notifications.
I'm on 4.0.4

Messenger problem

When I receive a message text shows under the chat head. It's really annoying. Is there any solution? Does anyone have this problem?

notification content is hidden

on the lock screen its not possible to read whatsapp message etc. because its hidden. how i can fix it?
