Excellent work - it seems to be working great so far!
Since I'm a stickler for ES File Explorer and all its many capabilities, I'm wondering if there's a way to use 7Archiver in conjunction with ES for opening archives like .tar files that ES can't handle. I've tried the [long press on .tar in ES] > Open as > Other > [check "Set as default app"] > 7Archiver approach, which works if you go through that process each time, but it doesn't actually set the default app to open .tars to 7Archiver.
Any assistance?

I do not know the solution this problem. This is a problem of older versions of the ES explorer. I wrote to them about this issue. In the current version (for the android 4+) it works fine.

I've found, that WM5 supports compressed CABs.
Use CabWiz to make compressed CAB.
Edit file cabwiz.ddf (in the same directory, where cabwiz.exe exists)
modify line ".Set Compress=OFF" to ".Set Compress=ON"
Warning1:
Don't delete original [uncompressed] CABs. Maybe - you will need them in the future.
Warning2:
Compressed CABs are not compatible with WM2003
Warning3:
Don't edit nor don't save them with WinCE CAB Manager from ocpSoftware [up to version 1.1.0.4]. Everything looks OK, but [after save] all files within the CAB are corrupted.
Probably the reason is, that compression aplies only to files, not CAB as a whole. File structure is the same and CAB Manager properly reads all info, but is not able to decompress files.
-----------
If you have only cab and need to compress it:
Open CAB with WinCE CAB Manager
Select from menu: File / Export / ExportToINF
start command line
switch to the directory with INF file
execute "[path]cabwiz xxx.INF /err cabwiz.err /cpu arm" (replace [path]cabwiz with full path do cabwiz.exe, replace xxx.INF with INF file name)
-----------
I you have EXE installer only:
start PC installation
cancel Pocket PC installation
look at subdirectories of C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync - probably you will find (uncompressed) CABs here.
FWIW, the next version of WinCE CAB Manager will include support for compressed CAB files as well. In fact, this is already available in the WinCE CAB Manager 1.2 BETA. See also:

Want to know what a file extension is?
File extensions are the short suffixes that appear after the filename.
They are used to indicate the file type. In their early use, file extensions were used to indicate the generic type of a file.
For example, .txt was used for a text file, and file extension .gfx for a graphics file.
However, over time, file extensions have become connected with certain programs or even versions of that program.
A .doc file indicates a Microsoft Word document, while a .docx file extension means it was created using Word 2007 or a later version.
hey guys so i found this miui lockscreen that i really like but would like to add some color to the icons so far here is wat i have done downloaded the mtz file
made a new folder inside the folder in my .mtz file i made a copy of my .mtz file and chage the extension to .zip---i extrated the zip file and inside of it theres a previiew folder, a wallpaper folder, description.xml file and a LOCKSCREEN FILE.
ok i made a copy of the LOCKSCREEN FILE and once again add .zip extension to extrated, once extrated theres a advance folder and theme_value.xml
i went inside the advance folder and added color to some icons and all
now im trying to rezip my folder to a .mtz file to be able to install it on my phone any help
Usually, in Lockscreen files, there is "Themes_values" and an "Advanced" folder.
Select the two, right click, then "Add archive...," OK.
Name it "lockscreen" then select ZIP and then "Store" under Archive method.
Then double click the zip and it should open in winrar (depending on which unzipping tool you use), then I double click the "..." folder where you see the lockscreen.zip. rename it, by taking off the extension. Then it should be just a file.
Then select the file, along with the other folders that are in the mtz.
I believe they are Preview, Wallpaper and "description" xml.
Archive those the same way and follow the steps again, except rename it to .mtz.
That's my method.

UPDATE: i got the "themes_value.xml" file and the "advance" folder highlight both of them and right click add to archive change the name to lockscreen selected .zip as the extension and choose "store" as method....now i have my lockscreen.zip folder
i right click "lockscreen.zip" and took of the .zip extension and it became "lockscreen" but when i put my mouse over it on file type is says "winrar zip archive"
Newer HTC smartphones use zip to store the ROM
It can be opened with a common archiver (like 7zip and WinRAR)
nbh cannot be opened with an ordinary archiver
