update 5.1 then cf- root. will this method work - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

new verizon nexus 6 should be coming via fedex early this week.
will these steps work?
1) boot up phone, take the OTA update to 5.1
2) download 5.1 sdk drivers
3) downlaod cf-auto root, run windows bat file to root phone
4) install TWRP manager from play store, get custom recovery
5) install scott's clean rom (wait for his 5.1 ver)
Will the above steps get me on the latest bootloader and modem?
Also, can someone please direct me to the nexus 6 driver downloads?
thanks in advance

After taking the ota, just flash twrp through fastboot , then scroll down in fastboot to go to recovery then select the option to restart phone and it will ask you to root select yes. And to answer the question about the driver just install them through the SDK

Issue rooting with unified rooting tool

Having an issue with the unified rooting tool (http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/orig-development/toolkit-skipsoft-unified-android-t2967053). Paid for the pro version because i enjoy supporting quality work.
Went to do the all-in-one unlock/recovery/root, however it's not rooting for me. The final step of rooting gets stuck in TWRP and nothing happens. The program says 'Recovery mode not detected' and just hangs asking me to try again, ask for help, or abort.
I have ADB and everything on and working as unified can connect to my phone, just can't get root going.
The phone is now unlocked with TWRP, but I can't achieve root. I flashed 5.0.1 via the app. Anyone have any clues?
edit: did it manually (before reading simms22's post). was hoping for lazy-automated as i paid money for the app and all.
If you have twrp installed just flash SuperSU. The newest version of SuperSU (2.37 or something I think) can be flashed like old days.
lol, learn to root a nexus the right way. its easier than using a toolkit..
1. fastboot oem unlock
2. fastboot flash yourself a recovery
3. flash the latest supersu with that new recovery
4. reboot and profit
root

[Q] About to unlock, unencrypt, root, and rom! please check if correct

I bought a nexus 6 on google play and I am on verizon. It is currently running 5.0 LNX07M.
Could some nice fellow please tell if if this is correct?
1. download wugfresh
2. download drivers
3. tick usb debug, oem unlock
4. unlock bootloader
5. flash no force encrypt
6. root
7. Trwp
8. Get Chroma/ or any other 5.1.1 rom and flash with gapps?
I'm espeically concerned if it is ok to unlock and root a 5.0 nexus 6 and then use twrp to flash a 5.1.1 rom. Should I first update the phone to 5.1 or something?
1. download and install adb/fastboot
2. boot into the bootloader and plug in via USB to your computer. depending on what your computer is running, it could download and install the driver by itself or you would have to.
3. fastboot OEM unlock unlocks the bootloader.
4. reboot and back into your bootloader.
5. flash twrp recovery
6. flash your custom kernel and SuperSU for root via twrp recovery.
7. only if you want to decrypt, format your storage. if not, just reboot.

Should I update my phone or is 5.0 ok for flashing the latest 5.1.1 rom?

if updating the official way, go to 5.1 then 5.1.1. but if updating via custom ROM, it doesnt matter, you can flash 5.1.1 over 5.0
IMHO,
1) download Android SDK or minimal fastboot and ADB or 15 second ADB and fastboot installer
2) connect to PC and reboot to bootloader
3) from command prompt:
fastboot devices
(Serial number shows up)
4) From command:
fastboot oem unlock
fastboot reboot
5) Download the latest TWRP recovery for shamu
6) Boot back to bootloader and from command (having placed the TWRP image somewhere where fastboot can find it i.e. in platform tools in SDK) also rename it to twrp.img
Issue the command:
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
(Be careful to not have it list the file ext. twice. Windows names the file ext. by default. Example: twrp.img.img
After recovery flashes, from bootloader, use the volume keys to select recovery mode and press power. Your device will boot to TWRP.
Make a backup!
Next, download SuperSU zip and flash with TWRP.
Congratulations, you are now stock rooted and you can choose any ROM you like and flash with TWRP. Follow the instructions carefully from the ROM OP and profit.
It may look complicated but trust me, it's not. The longest process will be after you unlock the bootloader. Your device will wipe completely so backup anything you'd rather not lose forever.
Remember, a 32gb Nexus will take 10 to 15 minutes to wipe and reboot. A 64gb will take 20 minutes or more.
The benefit of doing it this way is you know exactly what is happening to your device, unlike a toolkit. Also, you just learned something! Plus, if you get stuck somewhere and end up soft bricked, you'll understand what and how when someone here tells you how to fix it.
Thank you guys for your responses ! I think my laziness is going to win me out this round so im going to use the toolkit. But next time, I will do the correct way!

Couple questions after unlocking bootloader (XT1096)

Ok, here's the rundown - I have a VZW Moto X (XT1096). I previously ran mofo on it had flashed the 5.1 img files to it and so had 5.1 rooted, but with a locked bootloader. After learning that JCase had gotten sunshine to work on it I unlocked my boot loader. I then decided that because I was worried about having the a kind of mish-mash of systems on it, i.e., 5.0 bootloader (unlocked) with hacked and modded 5.1 system files flashed from mofo, that I wanted to start fresh. I then used the XT1096 flash to stock script and flashed back to 5.0 (there were a bunch of problems and bootloops and force closes, but I am happy to report I am now on a fully stock 5.0 with unlocked BL). Following being stock I have tried to take the OTA but have been unable to do so. When I try it OTA on my device it just sits at 0%. When I tried using MDM it gave me an error message that it failed to install the update - on the device it said getjar: unlocked.
So, now that I am on 5.0 with an unlocked bootloader I am not sure how to proceed with my priorities, Root, WiFi tethering and upgrading to 5.1. My questions are this:
(1) How can I upgrade to 5.1 or does my bootloader unlock preclude that?
(2) How best can I achieve root?
(3) Once I am rooted what do I need to do in order to enable wifi tethering?
Thank you so much!
Okay I can't help with all your issues since I didn't get that problem. It seems like whatever you did to install your phone back to 5.0 it wasn't a clean install or you didn't do a clean data wipe to remove errors, which caused it to not able to receive OTA. I do not believe unlocking bootloader preclude you from receiving OTAs because it worked for me.
1. What you should try to do is download this stock 5.0 firmware package, run the bat file with the latest adb/fastboot, then boot into recovery after that and do a data/cache wipe just to make sure. Then boot in the phone and try to do the OTA again.
2. To get root, I use TWRP recovery to flash SuperSU. This is the standard way in fact.
Download SuperSU.zip and put it in the phone: http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu
Get the latest TWRP image here for the Moto X 2014: https://dl.twrp.me/victara/
Flash the recovery using the command: fastboot flash recovery twrp-2.x.x.x-victara.img
Boot into recovery and flash the SuperSu.zip.
Note that now you have made changes to the recovery and system partition, so in order to receive future OTA updates, you need to use fastboot and flash the stock system.img and recovery.img before doing the update.
3. I don't have experience with Verizon network. I use T-Mobile on this Verizon device and I just enable WiFi Hotspot. In the APN settings, in the "APN type" field, I add the value "dun". And set everything to IPv4.

Thank you for the reply - got the update to take and have gotten the device rooted properly.
Now I just need to enable wifi tether - anyone know what is done in the Mofo images that allows it - can i do the same here?
I am interested in this question as well. I am in the exact same boat as the OP, except I am still on a Mofo 5.1 img that is giving me issues. I'd like to flash back to stock and take the OTA. But wifi tether will be a must.
Thanks to mikeoswego we have the tethering answer.

I tried this but after I flash TWRP I can't boot to recovery. If I choose recovery from the bootloader it just turns off the phone (charging icon). If I send it adb reboot recovery I get error android "No Command."
Flashed it multiple times, tried mfastboot, no luck. Any ideas?
Edit: I feel dumb. I was using power button to try to select, it's volume up. Good to go.

The other method (the one I used) was to install the Xtether xposed module for the 2013 Moto X - worked perfectly for me.
I feel like a complete noob for asking this in regards to my XT1096, but, how would I get rid of the unlocked bootloader warning message?

Unable to get root process to work right

I am currently following below process for flashing and rooting my device.
1) open sp flash tool. select Scatter file from target.bin in stock rom.
2) connect phone without battery and select firmware upgrade to go back to stock.
3) once starting download, put battery in the phone.
4) use marshmallow update zip in cwm recovery on phone. rename it to update.zip and install from recovery.
5) factory reset the phone after update.
6) install k3 note manager to root the device. simply click root.
7) do another factory reset.
After this, technically, I should be on stock rom with Marshmallow update, and rooted device. But, after I finish this, I am facing below problems:
1) I am unable to apply that wifi patch to fix battery issue. It reboots to TWRP recovery, and in recovery, there is no option for update or any zip file to flash.
2) NVRAM data is lost. I can write that data, but no idea why it is getting lost in first place.
3) Even after root, most apps are unable to use root access.
Can you guys help me get the device to official rom with root? What step am I missing here?

System update with TWRP??

Hi guys,
my P10 (stock rom, rooted and TWRP installed) says I can install a new system update: VTR-L09C02B151
So it downloads the update, then reboot, but TWRP shows up and so no update is done.
How can I install this update?
Thank you
Would probably need to be on stock recovery
Hi,

It's easy:
===============================
Step 1 - Back to Stock recovery:
Download this recovery - https://mega.nz/#!ucAnQD5D!VZETUq38R_drskwFgOXz_aK9wIsoIlbjUS5KHrULcTY
Connect your phone to PC and run these commands
adb devices (check your phone is connected)
adb reboot bootloader (reboot in fastboot mode)
fastboot devices (check your phone is in fastboot mode)
fastboot flash recovery RECOVERY.img (flash to stock recovery)
fastboot reboot (reboot the phone)
==================================
Step 2 - Download System Update and install it
Go to Settings -> System Update -> Check for Update
==================================
Step 3 - Flash TWRP again
Download TWRP 3.1.1-2 - https://mega.nz/#!8JwhzBzD!jiuod03amEPlWpo1LD7GWiwP62Z9I97F_TEarmXRrFU
Download SuperSU 2.82 for EMUI5 - https://mega.nz/#!WAYhHRwC!KAaTqWDID9-0e4s4RuKmUN_AKWBPjDJ0ynTXi7sYAv4
Put the 2.6.SuperSU2.82-EMUI5-SelEnforcing.zip in your SD card
Connect your phone to PC and run these commands
adb devices (check your phone is connected)
adb reboot bootloader (reboot in fastboot mode)
fastboot devices (check your phone is in fastboot mode)
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img (flash to TWRP)
fastboot boot recovery.img (reboot into recovery)
Go to "Install" menu and choose storage "Micro SD card" and install 2.6.SuperSU2.82-EMUI5-SelEnforcing.zip
Go to "Reboot" menu and press System for normal reboot.
Tested and works on my WAS-LX1C432.
Maybe this guide can be no more valid..
On my P10, updating from B179 to B180 (due to system notification) and TWRP/root installed, update process fails always.
So I extracted recovery.img from B179 Full-OTA update, flashed over TWRP and started system upgrade process, who completed successfully to B180.
However now I get FRP Unlock, (as before update) but PHONE Locked.
So system upgrade has overwrited the unlocked bootloader with a locked one.
Now, to reflash TWRP and apply root, I've to "fastboot oem unlock *Here Huawei Code*" for the second time, loosing all my apps, datas and settings!!
And each time a new update is available is the same way.. you have to go back to stock, and a new unlock will loose all your data....
Really annoying!
Step 2 - Download System Update and install it
Go to Settings -> System Update -> Check for Update
Click to collapse
So once I got to this part, it downloaded the update and then the phone rebooted into the stock eRecovery, but whenever it would try and install the update, it would say "Getting package info failed." Any ideas?
Hey I know I'm bumping here, but I'm seriously still at a loss with this. Stock recovery flashes fine, but every single time I try to install the new update, it comes up with ""Getting package info failed." If anyone has experienced this, it'd be great to get it resolved.
