[Q] Steam and Tethering - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey XDA Devs/Users,
So, I have pretty much rom-ed my device to about 5 diff rom's over the course of three weeks. and, everytime I have been using the built-in T-Mobile tethering app. Which, all the roms I have been downloading have said "Native Built-in Unlimited Tether". I have been only downloading Steam games and using FireFox to browse sites like XDA,Reddit and Imgur. and, of course.. some Facebook. However, everytime it works flawlessly.. No Hotspot usage shows up.. then, 2 / 4 days later. It starts accruing hotspot data again. it doesn't blast up of course.. but, it seems to reset or detect after a couple days. Is there anyway around this? or, do I need to keep wiping/rom-ing the device every couple days?
Also, I should mention I tried "WIFI Tether Router" and, this doesn't work for some reason.
I should also mention what I am running.
I am running the latest 4.4.4 Kitkat "DynamicKat" rom for T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 4.
Also, Anyone have any experience with Steam gaming/Multiplayer and T-Mobile tethering?
(I know I could purchase a home connection and avoid all this trouble. But, my only option is comcrap. which, I left since I was getting 1/100th of internet speed I paid for. not to mention constant disconnects and "service outages")

I think ya meant streaming. Most if not all ur answers can be found in thread you must read to get it to work. You could also ask in the firekat thread how they doing it.

Regarding the WIFI Tether router. I read about 8 / 9 pages into that thread and it still kept taking data from the hotspot. and, the apn was set to ipv4 for both(which, I understand is the mobile data identifier for tmobile.)
and. Streaming. No, I literally meant Steam.
Also, Running Dynamic Kat 4.1 not firekat

Lol. This guy has no idea what's going on.
I always use native tethering app and my data doesn't get counted. I had to stop using WiFi tether router because I can't get the ssid to show anymore.
I use firekat though so maybe it's just a problem with dynamickat. I would try odin flash back to 100% stock and start over. I've had to do it before.

I've started seeing the same thing with Darth stalker ROM. Using native tethering. Here recently I've started seeing some usage of hotspot where before I did not.
Ma.t-mobile.com
Like right now it's showing about 105mb of usage from hotspot. And Darth also has unlimited native tethering.
So maybe Tmobile has finally realized whatever was working and has patched it on their side?

Froyo + WiFi = disabled connections

So ever since I've gotten my Nexus One I've been noticing it drops out of a WiFi way too often. It does it both at home and at work on Wireless routers using the latest firmware. I've set the sleep policy to never go to sleep but most of the times I wake my phone up, I'll find it on 3G instead of the full strength WiFi it should be on. On 2.1 when I'd go into WiFi settings it would show the connection and say something along the lines of "Connection unsuccessful, tap to try again" and on 2.2 it just says "Disabled, Secured by blah blah blah". If I retry, it ALWAYS connects and WiFi will stay active for a short period of time before falling back to 3G.
Is there some way I can tell Android to retry the WiFi connection if it fails instead of just giving up? I've been looking through the WiFi API's on the Android Developer site and I'm this close to writing an application that will attempt to mitigate this issue for me.
If I'm within range of one of my pre configured networks, I want the phone to try it's hardest to stay on WiFi. If it loses connection, retry. It it can't get it after 5 retries, wait five minutes and try it again, don't just give up and mark the connection as disabled.
I've read tons of threads about people with WiFi issues and people always say "it's the router, it's the channel, etc, etc" but my WiFi works perfectly fine as long as there is a human to reconnect it if it drops.
Anyone else in the same boat as me?
ok so apparently I'm the only one with an N1 and a WiFi issue.......
I have the same exact issues.
I have the same issue as well and if it stays on I have to turn wifi off and back on so it will connect properly

same issue here. i had been looking for an app that would force the connectivity, but the market doesn't seem to have it. just a bunch of crappy wifi on/off switcher management apps. i'm surprised that no one has hacked this function or built an app for it.
It's certainly a very annoying problem. Mine will go to known good wifi networks, at work, at home and at other locations where my other devices work flawlessly. I have a coworker with the exact same firmware (we updated using the same file) on a nexus one that has never seen this problem, which I find odd, but I'm fairly new to Android. It looks like a software or driver issue to me, but as I said, I'm new to Android.
My device shows the known networks as "Disabled", but I can connect manually.
Looks like it's worth me coding up an App to fix this then.
what kernel are you using? i used to have that problem but that has gone away with newer kernels. unfortunately a new problem has arisen where after being in standby for a while, wifi shows as connected but doesn't have an outside ip. wondering if its my rogers modem or not.

Personally I wouldn't do any work towards writing an app to fix this since it looks to me to be an OS or driver issue that should be resolved in a future release (hopefully in very short order).
An app would really just be a band-aid, but I'm the lazy type and I can deal with using my cell ular data when I don't feel like reconnecting my wifi.
Full disclosure: I'm a crummy programmer and it takes me forever to write stuff so I'm usually less inclined to do it.

I'd rather take the time to fix it then wait for an update that may never arrive. Always fun digging into the API anyways
That's cool. I still find it a bit troubling, though, that some devices see it and some don't, using the same firmware, on the same wireless networks.
I guess it could be a board rev. difference or an app conflict or something. ::shrugs::
I have a similar problem. I use APNdroid to keep cellular data off and use wifi, but I continually have to reconnect wifi no matter what if I am not actively using it. Defeats the purpose of push email.
I downloaded APNdroid after checking data usage and finding that with wifi on there was still significant 3G leakage. Especially confusing with wifi set to never sleep and plugged in overnight.
On the plus side, APNdroid has netted me a lot more battery life, I can almost get two days and one night. I almost never use my spare battery anymore.
Just as an additional data point, I am having the exact same issue with 2.2 FRF83 (I had been on FRF50).
It looks to me like it is simply scanning all of the time and never associating with a known network. I'm not sure why it flags them as "Disabled", however.
Have you guys tried to set the "wi-fi sleep policy" to "never"
if not, try this:
Wifi settings->menu->advanced->wifi sleep policy->Never

Yeah, it doesn't help, that was one of the first things I tried. Any time I leave and come back, the networks show as "Disabled". It's a frustrating issue in that it isn't consistant. It's 80% fail, 20% work.
I had my g1 for a year now and just now got my n1. I havent rooted it b/c of this bug. At first i couldnt listen online radio b/c as soon the display went out it would buffer the whole time. I played with the wifi router and the n1 wifi settings an managed to fix it somehow, BUT when i wake up in the morning for some od reason it lost connection and never reconnected again. So i can hear online radio with the display out but after some hours w/o online radio and just in standby it loses wifi connection and never connects again
This issue is not new. There is a thread on the google forum many pages long. Nobody hase even a clue where it could come from. Some1 on the forum said if u call support they will tell its ur routers fault.
The n1 completly ignores the sleep policy settings.
I have rooted two g1s with goldcard and still using one w/o a problem.

Well, I know fore a fact it's not my access point. I am a network engineer and worked on wireless systems for years and debugging these types of problems is something I'm a bit obsessive about. This stinks of a software or driver problem to me. It could potentially be a hardware revision issue since we have a N1 that works perfectly in all scanerios.
I've tested this with the following access points:
Apple Airport Extreme
Apple Airport Express
Meru
Cisco 1231
Cisco 350
Belkin pre-n
Linksys WRT54G stock
Linksys WRT54G dd-wrt (I forget the build number)
Soekris Engineering running pfSense
All exhibit the same behavior, while my control devices (Apple iPhone 3g, Apple Macbook Pro and a MyTouch 3g running Cyanogen 2.1).
I wasn't aware that this was related to rooting, I'd be more than happy to move back to a stock ROM if that solved my problem. Maybe I'll try that today if I get some time.
Could you possibly post a link to the google forum you're referencing?
I'm currently digging through the alogcat output to see if there is anything interesting in there.
This issue is worse since I upgraded to 83. I'm actually holding off to try CM6 when it comes out to see if there is any better performance there. I'm not sure if he uses updated drivers or kernel that may give better wifi performance.

WiFi Tethering Works Now?

I didn't do any mods. I just tried it today on my computer, two iPads, and an iPhone 5.
I didn't get any portal that leads to the T-Mobile webpage asking to add the wifi tether plan.

die, tmobile; you guys don't own wifi tethering!!!
I'm on the latest Vanilla Rootbox ROM 4.2.1 by the way.

It has always worked, however if they see too much " desktop" traffic it will give you the redirect. There is probably some buffer built in as some mobile sites are awful and people will want to load the desktop version....

2014 Bypass At&t's Throttling

After searching all morning chasing my tail, I figured I would come here and ask you guys.
Is there a way to bypass atts throttling on my rooted N3 running jb4.3 ???
You can change your data plan and they will stop throttling you then. They may change it for you if you tether without a tethering plan.
The throttle control is handled thru the network. Once you hit a high amount of data, they slow down your service. There's nothing we can do on our end.
Throttle
You used to be able to bypass it with APNs like AT&T medianet (this worked great, but newer phones won't connect to it I believe) and doing a switch from gsm/E and then back to LTE/GSM in the service menu (This was only temporary and had to be done everytime you rebooted the phone or every few hours). But it might not work anymore. There is a thread about it somewhere in the Galaxy S4 section I believe. You can see.

Yes sir, love my Hawks, and Bellator over the weekend as well as youtube music videos and the news.
I finally after all these years, get a good phone with 4glte speeds, and now att wont let me use it unless im at home connected to wifi !!!!
Surely someone on these forums has figured out a workaround?
As stated before, throttling happens on their side. We have no control. Any attempts to control throttling on the network side to increase speeds would be illegal because it would require unauthorized access to their stuff.
Sent from my SM-N900A using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
with my old s2 decompiling the services.jar led me to find some throttle.smali files and after i deleted them the network never even registered that i was using data just had full speed all the time tethering or not. sadly there is nothing like that on the note 3 but if i recall correctly there is a file in the etc folder that did mention throttle and was just text saying yes or no..
As stated, this is network side. No one here can control the carrier end of the network.
Also, there are several of these threads floating around, there's no need for multiple duplicates, if you don't like the answers given via search and experienced members, I don't know what to tell you.
Thread closed and will be cleaned.

T-Mobile auto block

Hello everyone I was wondering if it were possible to be blocked from tethering. I've read all the posts on how to reenable it, and even tried the WiFi tether router app. It all worked but suddenly two days ago while I was searching the net on my laptop, the T-Mobile upsell page popped up and hasn't left since. I've tried unrooting and relocking the phone then rerooting it. I've tried stock rooted and chroma custom ROM. Any help is appreciated

so ive seen youve used your tethering allotment. every tmobile "contract" comes with tethering included to them, besides for prepaid. its unlimited tethering for the limited plans, and 3.5gb tethering for the unlimited high speed data option. nothing like what you have done will do anything. i use the tether router app, as tmobile doesnt see me tethering when i use it. theres also an option for a build.ptop edit that will help as well.
That's what I'm saying. I've done that to where they saw me as using my data and not my tethering. For me now it doesn't work anymore. The build prop edit nor the app nor the sqlite settings.db route
Maybe they're getting clever. In the uk they use deep packet analysis to find out where the packets are coming from.

that happens. before any hacks were available, i tethered my whole home internet, until google caught on. then i used their legal tethering for a few years. last year i started using the wifi router app, and they havent seen me tethering yet. eventually, theyll catch on again.

Yes they did and I've tried unrooting and rerooting try to fix the problem. I've even used the WiFi tether router app by Fabio Grasso, currently he's trying to help me get it to work. I've been reading around that this is happening to T-Mobile customers though. Haven't really seen any other carriers with this problem.

I wonder how they are checking for tethering and if they are using deep packets as another member suggested. I'm hoping someone will find a work around because after all this is why we have android phones.
Just got off the phone with T-Mobile. It is confirmed that the methods around the tether limit do not work. Once you reach your limit they block you. As for neither method works anymore.

VZW unlimited data hotspot - FoxFi

Wasn't sure how to title this one, really, and if it's deemed that it should be moved/deleted, feel free. Just wanted to drop down a note on here for other people who may be in the boat. I'm on an older unlimited plan (95 GB this month and counting, couldn't imagine that on a tiered plan holy F...) And coming from my rooted G2, I realized I was gonna be hurting for hotspot connectivity. I use it to pair off the Android in-dash in my car, to tether my PC at home for the LTE speeds for netflix, and general internet stuff. Naturally I tried turning it on to see, and sure enough, wouldn't turn on and directed me to customer service to provision. So I was trying to see what I could find out, and crossing my fingers that maybe someone would find a way to open up that. Quick search on the way home returned FoxFi, though PdaNet. now. I had never used it, but so far so good for Wireless tethering. Using it now. There's a button for a premium version, though limited info as to the difference. The free version I guess is supposed to stop after a preset time. However, I've been on for a good forty minutes as of now, and while a pop-up did show up on the phone (dunno when, I just happened to turn on the screen and saw it), the data is still going through fine regardless. Maybe a matter of time before it is updated to catch up? But even so, the paid is 8 bucks right now, and I'm thinking well worth it.. Just figured I'd let people know that it, as of now, is working fine for the S6 for wireless hotspot for Unlimited Data plans.

Almost 2 hours straight with no drop, so I'm not complaining. 16 Mbps on a speedtest with half bars with the phone on the side, so I'm calling it a success lol. SOOOO glad it works, I was in a half-panic when it dawned on me that I wasn't hotspot-ed.

FoxFi working fine for me as well. Glad it is was one of my worries as well.
So on FoxFi is that subscription message briefly blinking on then off and then the built-in tethering turns on? Or does the message stay on but tethering works anyhow?
I currently have a the Xperia Z3v and FoxFi fails to turn on the built-in tethering option until that message is able to be skipped. Sometimes it takes once, sometimes it takes 50 times but eventually I get the subscription message to just blink on then back off and eventually it forces the tethering on, no data throughput until the message goes away though.
Also are you guys using any hashcode in FoxFi to get it working? I had to use the hashcode TEST on previous Verizon devices to get it working.

In my case, I have three lines. Mine has unlimited, the other two lines are tiered. So I've been using their upgrades, and then swapping the phone over. My phone has been eligible forever, but I've made it very clear I do not intend to ever use it. And as soon as any rep questions it, they take one look at my usage and go "Oh... yeah, I see why you're staying on the old one". And even if I didn't have an upgrade available, I'd just buy it outright instead. Still a ton cheaper than paying the extra that I'd need for my use.

Sorry, saw this late. When I go into the app, it doesn't do anything. You click on enable hotspot, it pops up a box that takes you to the Mobile Hotspot setting and you turn it on there (regular phone hotspot). That's all that it does. At that point, I just sit the phone down, and go about my way. Only once have I had it drop and then when I pick up my phone, it's just a notification that says "click here to reactivate internet" or something like that. I finally broke down and just paid the 8 bucks for it to get it out of the way, but even the "free" version let me stay online for quite a long period, even without the box coming up at all most of the time.

Do you by any chance subscribe to the Hotspot feature on your plan? Because on every other Verizon device there used to be a little box that popped up that says you must subscribe to turn it on. I'd be VERY surprised if Verizon forgot to add it here.

I have unlimited data without the hotspot feature. When I try to use the built-in hotspot utility I get a message about needing to subscribe, however when I installed FoxFi it tells you to then go to the built-in hotspot and enable it, which works. However if you quit FoxFi and try again it fails, so FoxFi is doing something in the background that lets you use the built-in tethering feature.

Nice! That's really awesome to know it just works at stock without any hashcode. Totally different story on previous devices!

The native hotspot via the verizon app? Are you paying the extra fee for it?

I don't subscribe to it as it doesn't really play well with my plan without making me switch lol. If I DON'T run FoxFi (sorry, the PdaNet+ app) prior to turning that on, it gives me the prompt to call to subscribe. However, after starting the app, it comes up and after enabling the FoxFi hotspot, it then allows you to turn on the system mobile hotspot without being prompted by the Verizon provisioning check. Basically, the app allows the hotspot to turn on without having to go through that check to Verizon first.

I'm not sure if you're being intentionally vague/coy, but I think we are curious whether you are getting wireless hotspot to work natively even though you aren't paying for it. That wouldn't make much sense, but that's what you seem to be suggesting.
