I just bought an unlocked nexus 6 about week ago off of swappa. I unlocked the bootloader and rooted it so I could use titanium backup and v4a... Well I noticed I'm on 5.0.1 and I want to goto 5.1.. I cannot receive the update from Google since I'm rooted right?? So I've been reading and would like some input as in to what I should do. I'm not a total noob I've just been out of the rooting and flashing game for few years since I had the note 3 and 4 from att ( never again lol )... So what's my best course of action? Can I use wugs toolkit and just flash the factory images or do I have to unroot first? Thanks in advance... I just don't want to be left with a paper weight

There are many threads about this.
You can simply download the images from Google and manually flash them.
You need adb and fastboot installed along with the drivers.
Not trying to be an ass, but search here and read carefully. A toolkit isn't necessary, flashing a nexus isn't difficult and you will learn what and how to do it.
The links aren't hard to find. It may sound mean, but it will help you more in the long run.
This is exactly why I never post stuff on XDA anymore...if I read my post I have been reading and searching ... I just had a simple couple questions. I've been reading as much as I can but with me being a single father of two and not having all day to read I just wanted to ask a couple quick questions so I don't brick my phone! I know I can flash them but can I do it rooted? Can I still get the ota while I'm rooted. Last I read u couldn't then someone Todd me you could! So I just wanted to be sure that's all!!!

you can not go through with an updated if you have root, or if you changed any system files. you can always do it manually, amd the right way. or you can just flash any of the compiled 5.1 roms with twrp recovery.
Just flash system.IMG from Google with adb commands

Yes, you can do it rooted.
I did it while my 2 year old daughter pitched a fit because she couldn't have my PC to watch Bubble Guppies and I flashed an N5 while my 14 year old watched asking question after question.
Learned how to use adb and fastboot after working 10-12 hours and cutting/splitting wood before it got dark.
I know tired and I know time crushed.
Forgive me.

I downloaded the factory image and I know how to use adb and fastboot but do I have to unroot to do so or just flash as normal.. Sorry if I'm sounding noob but last time I used or did any of this was with my nexus 4. Years ago lol

You don't have to unroot. Depending on what you flash you may have to re-root after flashing.
Flash boot loader then reboot
Flash radio then reboot
Flash system, boot, cache if you want. If you want to erase everything flash userdta as well. I usually skip user data.
After that fastboot flash custom recovery, boot into it and flash SuperSU. If you don't have SuperSU, twrp will see its not rooted and ask if you'd like to just by swiping.
You need to have boot loader unlocked. Be sure to go to settings/developer options/allow OEM unlock (tick the toggle) BEFORE you do any of this.
Sorry if its kinda convoluted, dinner time and I'm breaking rules by using phone at table, so going fast

Further to this, be aware, if you need to unlock the boot loader (if it isn't already unlocked), back up any data you want to keep... pictures music..etc because unlocking the boot loader... will erase everything......

All,

Here's what i did
using One_S_All-In-One_Kit_v3.5 for all my modding
got token
unlocked bootloaded
didn't flash any recovery
flash a new .img kernel, but i used a boot.img from a zip file (home2wake zip) - don't ask why, i wasn't thinking lol
phone rom was all black, keeps rebooting
i managed to flash recovery, recovery-clockwork-6.0.3.1-m7wls.img
then wanted to restore stock rom
so i downloaded, this rom, http://android-revolution-hd.blogspot.com/p/android-revolution-hd-mirror-site-var.html
flashed zip using recovery
went through the rom custom installation of what i wanted installed.
After that it rebooted and stuck on green htc screen
i can get back into boot loader, but can't load recovery, can't factory reset, any option i select, the screen flash and sends me back to bootloader
rom won't load, can't get into recover, computer not detecting phone
Please help!!!
Check out this maybe a RUU will help -

Why did you use one s kit, I'm confused
Sent from my HTCONE using xda premium
you can try to load ADB Fastboot on your PC, then connect your phone via usb, be sure to have all of the drivers.
in bootloader, if it reads FASTBOOT USB, then you can us
fastboot flash recovery (Name of recovery).img
once that is done you should be able to at least get back into recovery....
check the link for recovery file
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2236418
I am no expert, but my guess would be to go back to stock boot / recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2236418
Relock your phone: fastboot oem lock
Install the RUU: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2250904
And in the future don't use an All-In-One-Kit meant for another phone (The One S in your case)
p.s. Another thread that may help get you back to square one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2251800
thanks all,
will try all the suggestions above tonight, will let you guys know how it goes. i used the all one s because it was gui and easy and lots of extra and functions. but i guess the extra made it worst.
Right now when i plug in my phone the computer doesn't detect anything, hopefully the adb can talk to it to flash a new recovery/rom/kernel.

It wasn't the extras that messed it up. It was the fact you were using an AIO that isn't for your device. That's a big no no.

Android Revolution ROM is not for the sprint htc one. fyi
First you'll need this file http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2250904
Extract to someplace you can find it, maybe the desktop
if you power the phone down then hold the vol - button does it boot into bootloader?
if so make sure you have the htc fastboot drivers installed from htc sync
if your on a windows machine from command prompt navigate to the platform-tools folder
for example
mine is in C:/users/ray/downloads/adt-bundle-windows-x86_64/adt-bundle-windows-x86_64/sdk/platform-tools
in command prompt issue the command
fastboot oem lock
once the bootloader is re-locked
issue the command
fastboot oem rebootRUU
the phone should reboot into a black screen with greenish htc letters
find the setup.exe file from the ruu file and run it.
if all goes well you should be back to stock with a locked bootloader.
good luck

Let this thread be a lesson that 1) don't mess with your phone if you don't know what you're doing and 2) don't flash a GSM ROM on your Sprint phone because it wipes your boot and recovery partition (on GSM phones, it wipes data and system but sprints partitions are different).

Failing after making a bunch of random attempts to do something doesn't constitute learning. Next time you should make sure you actually understand what it is that you are trying to do before you do it, and maybe then you won't end up almost completely wiping your phone clean.
You're lucky that the international One's and Sprint Ones partitions aren't like the Sprint/international S3, or else you would've overrided your bootloader as well and had a brick on your hands.
I managed to borrow a Samsung Satellite laptop, so I could root and unlock my Nexus 6. Laptop is brand new. Everything was great on unlocking and rooting using Wogfresh's Nexus Tool Kit.
Then I decided to stop the forced encryption. Used Wug's Tool Kit again. At the end it says phone will reboot in 15 minutes. I waited over a half hour. Then I tried rebooting the phone. Now it flashed teamwin.
I can get it turned off. And I can still get it into recovery, bootloader mode, etc. I worked on this from 16:30 - 05:30 yesterday. I have been working today for another 3-4 hours.
Wug's Tool, the computer will not recognize the phone. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is sooooo frustrating! I have uninstalled drivers, updated drivers, usbs too. I did everything Wug's kit said to do.

first off, stop using toolkits!
doing it properly is just as easy, and takes about 4-5 minutes, to unlock the bootloader, flash the recovery, flash the supersu zip, and to flash a custom kernel that wont bring on encryption(but you have format data for un-encryption to work).
Good looking out! Thanks for all the information. I am positive that you must be of Wug's caliber, dev wise, right?
It's a real shame everyone doesn't know everything like you, huh? Also appreciate the directions on doing it your way, in 4-5 minutes.

assuming you got the driver installed..
1. while in bootloader.. fastboot oem unlock(this will unlock the bootloader
2. fastboot flash twrp recovery
3. flash the latest supersu with twrp recovery
this will give you root
4. flash any custom kernel(if you want to decrypt).
5. in twrp recovery, format data.
6. reboot and youll be rooted and unencrypted.
thats the basics, for any nexus. root toolkits can be used, if you already know what to do. if you are clueless of the process, youll learn ziltch using a roit toolkit, and will remain without any knowledge. so when you need to do some basic upkeep, you will be clueless, and will feel as your device is bricked. at that point youll start a pointless thread..

Simms is correct, its much easy to unlock using fastboot rather than a tool kit. When I first started modding it took me >5 minutes to learn how to do this. It always works and can really help you if you mess something up using a tool kit. If the OC doesn't recognize your phone, what screen is it showing (the TWRP logo) have you tried to hold power and volume down to boot into the boot loader? If you can boot into BL then you can flash anything via fastboot and fix this problem easily.
I am unlocked and rooted. When I tried change the forced encryption is when the phone became useless. I can get it into recovery (factory) and restart bootloader, etc.
But now it justs stay on the black and white Google when your first reboot your phone.
I have downloaded all the tools. I don't know the commands or the proper order.
My computer is not reconizing my phone after the encryption attempt.

first thing you need to do is get the driver installed, so that your device would be disabled to your computer to adb/fastboot. you are going to have to flash the factory.img through your bootloader via fastboot. or, you can fastboot oem unlock your bootloader, flash a custom recovery, and adb push/sideload a rom/gapps/supersu to your phone and flash them via your new recovery.

Hold the power and volume down button until it boots into recovery. Then plug the phone into your computer. Download the stock 5.0.1 zip (luckily I already had it downloaded). Use the toolkit and unlock the bootloader. It will say its successful but the phone will boot loop again. Boot into recovery and should say the bootloader is unlocked. Then flash the stock zip file and it should work! I had to figure it all out as I went because I couldn't figure it out online lol.

Not in the slightest . Your analysis is flawed. You assume this problem was caused by not understanding the underlying structure but it wasn't. It was caused by failing to follow directions. Which would have caused him problems had he used ADB or not.

How is it skewed? If, when he first got his phone, he unlocked and rooted in the normal way and not used a toolkit. He would have known how to use fastboot, including how to flash stock and lock the boot loader. He would not have used a toolkit today and wouldn't have used the wrong order and this thread wouldn't exist.
If you're an advocate for the cheat way and the way that makes it harder for us to help people, so be it. But 95%.of us prefer users to learn things properly and not become a burden to the forum. But you can help them all. Good luck with that.

how to properly root.
1. run the command "fastboot oem unlock" in fastboot. this unlocks your bootloader.
2. flash a custom recovery via fastboot.
3. flash the latest supersu in your new recovery.
4. reboot with root.
5. woohoo!
this takes about 3-5 minutes.

You can use adb. Fastboot is used for the oem i lock and recovery flash. If you want to put the supersu file on the phone without downloading it on the phone you can just adb push and flash in recovery. Done.

1. Fastboot oem unlock
2. Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img (it was twrp)
3. Booted into recovery and it would not let me access the recovery, just kept flashing the TWRP splash over and over and over.
The issue I think for me, was that I did not wait until the Nexus had wiped itself and booted back into Android to rebuild the file system. Hence TWRP farting out. I simply started from scratch again, flashed all the proper stuff that was needed and followed steps, and I was alright after that.
I have since returned the device though and exchanged it with a new Nexus 6, because my back cover had started to pop up in the top right corner above the power and volume buttons....but THAT is another story for another thread : p
Cheers all!
PS: It has been a while since I have owned a Nexus device, hence my own failure to follow the rules. Things have changed a bit with this Nexus it seems, and it was my fault. I am all good now though (or I will be after I set up this new Nexus 6)
PSS: No toolkits were used, or will ever be used in the creation and resolution of this debacle. My life is hard enough without blindly wandering through the forest of Android customization with my hand held by a complete stranger.

after fastboot oem unlock, you have to reboot once before flashing the recovery. rarely it doesnt stick, so you just flash it again if nothing appears
Hi guys -
I'm somewhat a newbie here. I think I have bricked my Nexus 6. I had root and an unlocked bootloader. I had Chroma riom installed and was trying to go back to stock rom, unrooted with locked bootloader and through TWRP i deleted everything, including the OS I believe. So now my phone is locked on the Google startup screen (unlocked bootloader) . Suggestions?
Thanks -
John
if your bootloader is unlocked you should be able to fastboot clear cache and user data , then flash a rom from twrp. I would refrain from ever locking the bootloader back up since the update where you have to enable unlock bootloader in Dev Options.

no you are bricked unfortunately. the unlock bootlader option in dev options really seems to have caused more issues then good.
I am wondering if Jtag will fix these devices?

Stop.
Read.
A lot.
You have an unlocked nexus with custom recovery installed, and you don't know what to do? You shouldn't be messing with this stuff. You lack VERY basic understanding. Read the stickies.
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images?hl=en
Factory images. Follow their directions.

The easiest way if you are not familiar with ADB is to download the nexus tool kit located on these forums from WUGFRESH. That tool will walk you through a step by step process on how to flash stock back. You are far from bricked. I have deleted my entire phone many a times and just re flashed stock back easily. As long as your boot loader is unlocked you are fine
Link to toolkit: http://www.wugfresh.com/nrt/
The option you are going to want to use is on the front of the toolkit called flash stock + un-root. You can watch some videos on his website as well for flashing stock. That is all you need to do .
Any questions let me know, send me a PM

It is not the easiest option. The easiest option is plug the USB cable in, boot to TWRP, enable MTP mode and copy a rom to the sdcard.
Also, many senior members here will discourage the use of toolkits for those who are not familiar with adb or fastboot. It is best to learn these and use them at least once before starting to use toolkits. Toolkits do not "walk you through". They take you through without explaining anything.

In a perfect world, I am sure we would all love to dive in and discover everything and be experts in all fields as time would not be a factor. I do not disagree it is helpful to learn ADB and fastboot commands and understand what they do. At this point in time though, the end goal here is to get his phone back up and running as fast as possible and then he can do the post-mortem to figure out what he did wrong and how to fix it .
I am guessing hes not very familiar with TWRP since he wound up in this situation. The toolkit alleviates the need for knowledge and gets the job done. I'm sure after this, the OP will research how to use his phone before trying to do anything next.

..but even so, your method is overkill. It is really simple to boot into TWRP and look in the menu for the "Enable MTP" option. Once that is done, the phone appears in "Computer" as an MTP device, just like when you boot into android. Then, simply dragging and dropping a ROM onto that device then flashing it via recovery will get him back up and running. There is nothing simpler or quicker than this.
Sorry, I do not intend to be confrontational here.
Okay. so after hours of searching and reading about unbricking my nexus 6. I am lost, and very desperate.
So, I unlocked my bootloader, and rooted my phone today using chainfire cf auto root. and all went well. The primary reason I did this was to edit the build.prop file to enable wifi tethering, and this is where my problems started. Using root explorer I added
HTML:
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
to the end of the build.prop file. I rebooted and now I'm stuck in a bootloop on the google screen.
I did not have a custom recovery installed, so flashing a new rom isn't that easy. I have looked into flashing twrp or cwm from the stock recovery adb sideload feature, but I haven't gotten this figured out either.
So that brings me to where I am at now. I still have an unlocked bootloader, which I guess is leaving me some options, but I just don't know where to go to find information which isn't going to further muck this situation up.
Help, please. I don't have a backup phone. And I am getting desperate.
Thanks in advance
Reboot to the bootloader, flash stock system.img

very first off.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/attention-questions-t3228454
meaning, you wont get help if tou do ont post it in the right place.
secondly, you have two choices, flash twrp then flash a rom, or flash the factory image(just system.img). what your pro lem is tgat you used a toolkit, instead of learning thd very easy proper way. now you dont know how to do things. its rwally easy to flash twrp via fastboot, and its very easy to flash a factory image using fastboot as well. now ill ask a mod to move your thread into the correct area..
thanks

i just saw, it was your first post. i didnt mean to sound rude, for that im sorry.
but you have your answer(s). your phone isnt bricked, its just without os. and the os can be flashed, even using a toolkit.
