[Q] Tmobile US hotspot not working - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i have a stock .77 ftf rooted with a locked bootloader on D5803, and a 5gb (not unlimited) data plan. i have been trying to use the stock wifi tethering option but it doesn't seem to be fully functioning. i can do Google searches and even stream netflix (if i'm already on the show i want to watch) or an add on on xbmc but any other web pages load forever and i mean forever!
is there any way to get this to work without downloading a third party app ... i like the option of going into quick settings and turning it on from there.
thank you!

Do you do not have the hotspot option on your plan? I do and it works fine on both completely stock and CM12.

[Q] Is Verizon Blocking Bluetooth Data Sharing?

Hey Other Glass Explorers,
Just wanted to check and see if anyone has found a way around verizon blocking bluetooth data sharing unless you have a tethering plan. Out of the research I've done so far supposedly google built a work around into the MyGlass app (the icon shows up and down arrows) but I still get not data connection when only connected to bluetooth. I thinking my option at this point is to root and say "Forget you Verizon, I'll do what I want with my data". Has anyone else noticed this?

Gary -
I can confirm that Verizon was blocking my bluetooth tether. I'm on a grandfathered unlimited data plan. Once I rooted, and went to a custom ROM, I'm happy to report that bluetooth data tethering is fully operational.
Cheers...

Any hotspot widgets out there that work?

I'm trying to find a hotspot widget, specifically one that enables and disables the built in AT&T hotspot. Yes I do have this enabled and authorized by AT&T, it just would be nice to have a widget where I just press it and it toggles it on and off. I've tried several from the marketplace but none of them worked, they would try to verify and it looked like it would turn on for a split second, but then turn off.

I like power toggles.

A widget that tries to enable hotspot, but shuts down sounds like you're not able to tether, or haven't configured your hotspot yet. Are you able to enable hotspot thru the system settings?

Hmm that doesn't work either. It will say "Please wait while verifying" then nothing, and the hotspot isn't turned on. My hotspot is working and setup, I have named it and put in a password and I can manually go into settings-connections-tethering and portable hotspot and click it on and it turns on and off just fine.
Anyone else have trouble with this?

I wish, I'm one of the poor saps who upgraded to kitkat.
same issue here
Going to bump this because I have the exact same issue on a rooted galaxy s5. I used hotspots toggle Widgets on my s4 without issue for years, but that one typically had custom Roms. On the s5 I'm running rooted stock 4.4.2
I do have legal tethering with at&t, and use it frequently so if anyone has a fix I'd greatly appreciate the info.

Best Wifi Tether WITH root option?

So I've been a longtime foxfi -> PDANet user and ever since 4.3 dropped I've lived without tether. It wasn't THAT big a deal for me since I tether in emergency situations only and they don't come up often but now that I'm on the S5 and root has dropped I realized it's time to get tethering as a backup working.
So my question is what's the current best wifi tether option for the S5 if you've rooted it? I don't mind paying for an app if there's no free version that does the same thing or just to support a good developer. I've found things like wifi tether:
https://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
but every one I've found seems old and hasn't been updated in quite a long time.
Any feedback much appreciated.
Try WiFi Tether Router v6
I apologize for being nosey, but what's wrong with the built-in Mobile Hotspot?

Grandfathered unlimited with no option to use the built-in Mobile Hotspot without giving up the unlimited. I use MAYBE 500MB-1GB tethering a month and I'm not willing to give up unlimited for the ability to tether those rares times especially since pulling into the parking lot of a starbucks has worked for those emergencies in the last few months.

This looks promising but I don't like paid apps you can't try before buying. Does anyone else have any experience with this app?

That WiFi tether is OK to use. The core system has not been updated in a while, but if you look into the project a little deeper, you will find that the S4 just received it's own configuration into the tether.
With the S5 recently obtaining root, I'm sure the configuration will be patched in soon.
I am using 3.4pre1 (experimental). There are only two issues I came across.
1) The Logging portion fails.
2) If you are connected to a wifi hotspot, then start wifi tether, you will loose the configuration for that specific SSID. Don't worry, though, as a reboot will fix this.
Also, I use the S4 device profile. It seems there is somewhat smoother operations with this.
I have grandfathered unlimited data with AT&T and successfully enabled the built-in hotspot by using the "Disable tethering provisioning" option in WanamXposed

I just tried that and it didn't seem to work for me. I got impatient and just bought Wifi Tether Router 6 (that $25 google play credit makes it hard to be patient). It seems to work but I had some issues when I was connected to Wifi when I started to initiate the tether and actually if I was even in a place where I had a signal for a saved wifi. Forgetting the wifi networks in my house and it worked which I guess is ok since I wouldn't ever be using it someplace where I had another Wifi to connect to.
But I wouldn't mind figuring out how to use wanam xposed to do it, if there's a way to.

I can 100% confirm however that the Xposed module "X Tether" enables native tethering correctly...I am posting using it now

Yes it does seem to. Allows me to use native app, doesn't mess up wifi if connected already. I think I'll use this method. I'll just eat the $2.50 for wifi tether router I guess.
Thanks Scott.

[TUT][ROOT] AT&T Wifi-Tethering Provision Bypass

DISCLAIMER: This is my first thread on XDA, so hopefully I'm not posting in the wrong place/format/context/whatever. If I am, sorry.
For those of you with AT&T plans that don't include Tethering, I came across a simple way to bypass this with root and allow you to run the built in tethering instead of having to use FoxFi.
What you'll need:
Xposed Framework
X Tether Module (Xposed Module)
Root (towelroot method)
Titanium Backup
Root Explorer/ES File Explorer
Step 1:
Install Xposed Framework.
Once installed, launch Xposed Installer, go to Downloads and search for X Tether
Install X Tether, Activate the Module, and reboot.
Step 2:
Open Titanium Backup and find TetheringProvision 4.06.72
Press the App and select 'Freeze !'
Step 3:
Open Root Explorer and navigate to:
/system/app/
Now rename TetheringProvision.apk and TetheringProvision.odex
to TetheringProvision.apk.bak and TetheringProvision.odex.bak
Step 4:
Reboot, Set up Hotspot and Enjoy!

Tried this, when I attempt to activate the HotSpot it says "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped."
After following the updated instructions, my hotspot appears to be working. Thank you!
Yea, that looked too easy. Usually you would swap the tethering provision files with hacked ones.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I see you changed the instructions in the thread. That just renaming the file like you suggested earlier, well AT&T caught on to that, and now that doesn't work anymore.

Hi shortydoggg,
You're right, I left out the most important part, the Xposed Module.
X Tether (or Moto Tether) is what actually clears out the array that stores the provision varification data (config_mobile_hotspot_provision_app)
Just running this module didn't work for me at first but after renaming the Tether Provisioning files it worked fine.
I also had trouble renaming the files until I froze the Tether Provisioning apk file.
I just ran another test and the built in wifi hotspot is still working great with my 3GB monthly plan.
Works awesome!!!!
BTW, I have the Grandfathered Unlimited Data Plan.
Thanks!
Did this yesterday, worked fine. THANKS!
Also another grandfathered unlimited plan here; they provisioned the plan on my new GS5 but couldn't enable tethering. This solves that!! Awesome!!

Open the Xposed network on your phone and check that the tethering module is activated, and that the xposed network actually installed. You may need to do another step (hint)
Wifi tether speed
I was able to allow mobile hot spot on my Att S5 using the S4 method of replacing the tetherprovision.apk, problem is the speed of the devices connected is terrible. Fine for checking email on one device but not for streaming netflix on multiple like I need. Anyone know of a way to change this? Is it some config file that is set purposely to limit tethered devices?
Note 3 4.4.2
works, thanks
having trouble with the settings also

They shouldn't notice. I've been tethering on my s2 for years without any issues.
Some developers will say it is technically possible. If your concerned, a VPN service will hide all of your online habits from Tmobile.
I have a subscription through PrivateInternetAccess, I havent hand any issues with their app.
It works!!! I'm also on the grandfathered unlimited plan!

Note 3 AT&T on T-Mobile, never used hotspot before
A few questions -
1. Phone gets hot when hotspot is on. Is that normal?
2. Connection drops from time to time. IPv6 connectivity shows "no internet access", but then works without me doing anything. Is that T-Mobile's fault?
3. When I received a call the icon changed from LTE to 4g, but while hotspot is on and pc connected, the signal never changed back to LTE. Is that how it supposed to be? I have to turn hotspot off and on after every phone call to get LTE back? Or is that T-Mobile not being happy (I have not used the 3gb hotspot limit on my unlimited data plan)
Thanks
Hi, first off a major thanks to OP for posting an excellent tutorial on how to do this. I was really hoping to get tethering enabled on my grandfather unlimited data plan before vacation and am so excited to not have to pay $15 a day for WiFi.
I've been having a lot of lag with the phone lately. Its very slow to respond to typing, switching apps, and even waking and putting to sleep takes 5-10 seconds longer than normal. Any suggestions? I followed all of the directions to the letter and aside from this massive amount of lag, everything is perfect.

Hey Nikon,
Hopefully someone with a little more knowledge on the subject can help out but here are my thoughts.
1. My s2 always got hot while tethering for long periods of time and my s5 seems to do the same as well.
This is normal and caused by the 4G antenna and WiFi antenna running simultaneously.
2. Perhaps IPv6 is not working but IPv4 is? I'm seeing the same thing on my AT&T connection.
3. I never had this issue. You might want to double check your APN settings, it could be a t-mobile thing but I really don't think they're targeting people who tether, it sounds more like the connection can't re-establish after connecting to a phone call.

Hey RSCTurner20,
I haven't notice any lag since doing this, does the lag go away if you turn off the X Tether Module and reboot?
edit: most likely cause and a quick fix: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2784945
that's right - if you get a call or access phone settings while client is connected phone cannot re-establish lte connection.
I know when you get a call (hotspot off) on Nexus 5 it takes anywhere from 15 seconds to up to 5 minutes to get lte back
Is there a way to force phone to refresh frequencies?

WIFI Sharing not an option anymore?

Hello all,
Recently i went to make a hotspot for my cars radio since the WIFI antenna doesn't get a good signal and i did not have the option to share WIFI. The only way i would be able to make a hotspot was to add it to my plan.. Which im not gonna do obviously since i only use it very often... Was this feature removed? I'm running Android 10 on ATT. It worked a few weeks ago... Any help?

if youre running stock firmware, it doesnt shock me that your providers CSC locked out the native wifi sharing. If you flash the U1 firmware for your device (ubranded, directly from Samsung) then youll have that option again. I did that exact same thing on my S9

Sorry... you're right a SS would of been useful.
As you can see no selection for WiFi share. Also, i need to disable WiFi in order to hotspot now.
IT is there, just a bit hidden...
Goto Settings... Connections... Mobile Hotspot and Tethering..top on the left of the Mobile Hotspot Toggle line (just tap the M of Mobile)... click on the 3 vertical dots on the top right...... voila... Wi-fi Sharing shows up!!!

yes, you have to turn off wi-fi before you can run your own hotspot, it probably just did it without alerting you to it before. These devices only have 1 wifi radio and it cant use one wifi while producing its own also
here is the U1 firmware should you decide to flash it. doesnt sound like its strictly necessary as others might have found a solution for you, but here it is anyways

What is the benefit (besides getting rid of bloat on the phone from ATT) for using the u1 firmware?
