I just picked up a MOGA game pad, the flatish one. It's pretty great. Best buy price matched amazon so it only ran me $30. Plus it came with pac man and sonic. It also works with deadtrigger, and nova 3 I believe. Theres a root app you can get so you can use it on app though. or at least you could in theory.
Ive tryed every single one... I always go back to the ps3 controller because of the build quality.
I've used PS3 Sixaxius Controller with the Sixaxias Controoller app. I like it the best. With the app, it's fairly robust with quite a bit of games because of the touch profiles you can create with and for it. Another bonus, you can get something like the GameKlip, which makes it easier for gaming on the go.
I've tried the OnLive Universal Controller. Only works with the OnLive app. I could get it to detect in games like Dead Trigger, but couldn't program it. OnLive did something different to where going into the map buttons sections of games only gives one command.
I've installed Wiimote Controller app and synce the Wiimote, but didn't try any games. It's good for emulators.

I also got it for free, and I am still disappointed with it. It always takes several attempts to get it to sync, and they have it so restricted to what games it will work on, that ruins it IMO.

Same here. I got mine for free but returned it to walmart (since they sell them there) and got a 40 dollar gift card LOL. Easy money! I wish I would've gotten more.

Dont have a PS3. But I can get a wireless controller for $45 and also I need a gameklip?
Or should I just go for Moga?
There's another cheaper alternative to Moga, its called ipega, not sure if its good though

You don't need the gameklip, but they are really nice. It just holds your phone for you. If you can find somewhere to prop your phone or something all you need is the controller and the sixaxis app.

Yeah I know i dont need a gameklip though it would be nice to be able to play without holding your phone at the same time.
i use a ps3 knockoff controller and sixaxis. it does the job, but probably would be better with a genuine controller.

Moga looked very promising in the beginning. After using though I would never try it again... It isn't worth your money. It isn't even worth free in my opinion...

I heard the same, that in of itself was the reason I never wanted to try it out.
Controllers
So, I've tried about 15 different controllers with my phone and for me, it's the PS3 Dualshock and a gameklip every time. With Jellybean supporting wireless controller profiles it's just the easiest thing out there. If you do go this route, I suggest the Dualshock controller specifically due to the slight added weight. With the gameklip the phone sits about 1/4" from the controller and with the regular sixaxis controller it feels a little top heavy after a while, whereas the slightly heavier Dualshock keeps that from happening.
Another tip with the gameklip (especially for you guys that already have one) if you get the gameklip you have the option of getting it with a case just for the klip... DON'T. It's crap... But, I've found a great solution! Get one of these vent mounts...
--ebay.com/itm/Universal-Car-Air-Vent-Mount-Cradle-Holder-For-Samsung-N7100-Galaxy-Note-2-II-/321064385984?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item4ac0edbdc0--
Then, just pop the mounting plate off and attach the gameklip to that. You phone just snaps in and out really easy and is very secure.
The only other controller I would recommend is the Nyko Playpad or Playpad Pro. Great battery life, comes with some cool accessories and a case. The only downside is that being as small as it is, long play sessions are less than comfortable.
Yes but can you set up some good profiles for games like you would on the sixaxis app? It be great if that app could work with the playpad or does it?
I like the form factor of the small playpad to keep in my ride so i can play while my phones docked there. Not trying to really be caring a ps3 control cus honestly there to bulky for me, Small playpad seems easier to store in glovebox

I use the iControlPad. .. it's the most portable and versatile gamepad that I've found that can attach to the phone. Waiting for the iControlpad2 to be released so I can have a bluetooth keyboard and gamepad in 1 device.

I've been using the Ps3 controller with the sixaxis app from the market (I'm rooted) for about a week now. I love it. Enough so that I bought a GameKlip. Definitely recommend. I had contemplated the MOGA or other marketed Android gamepad's but I kept reading that app compatibility is hit or miss. It's not exactly plug/play but with some quick settings it's great.

Yea, Sixaxis AINEC imo. Nothing comes close to the accuracy and reliability it provides. Just root already and start rocking the PS3 controller
I am probably going to try this Viaplay this week. It has an adjustable holder for the phone.

Unless someone else has another recommendation of something similar. I'm just not sure how much use I'll get out of it, but it's not that expensive. I've been playing some FPS shoot em up game, and maybe some emulation.

Pretty cool. I use a moga pro
I've been reading up and it seems a game has to support Moga Pivot in order to use it with that controller?
With the Viaplay what drew me to it is that I can map keys to areas on the screen.. so it'll pretty much support any game.
The app requires root, which I have, for the Viaplay But the Moga gets better reviews and looks like a nicer controller.

I don't think you can do this with Moga or correct me if I am wrong?

I'm considering a Moga. Just not sure if I'd get good use out of it.

Well, the Moga Pro Power is $79.99, but Target has it on their website for $49.99. I went in store and they price matched it, because it was marked $79.99. You have to take it up to customer service and wait a minute while they pull it up on the website and compare the UPC's. Then a manager had to come over with their code because of the markdown.
I haven't tried it yet to comment. I haven't even opened the box yet. After I take care of a few things I'll try it out and come back here.
Here's what I did so far:
- Unit is very nicely designed. Good feel to it. Similar to an XBOX type controller, but not as bulky. All the buttons and joypads feel great. Doesn't feel cheap at all. Does not feel like they will break easy either.
- Install software, turn on bluetooth, pair device. Took me three times to get it to pair. If it doesn't pair you turn it off and on and try again. Takes up to 30 seconds.
- There's two different modes. It says the most popular is A, so I set that up, but there's also B. You have to go through the pairing process again. Took me two times this pairing. A mode is for Moga compatible games. B mode is for games that support HID controls.. IE: you can map keys in game. The game I have only has on screen stuff to press for movement, fire, etc. You have to purchase a separate app if you want to map to screen touches. See below.
- Once unit is paired it asks if I want to install Pac-Man. No thanks. The annoying part is EVERY time I open their software it keeps asking me about Pac-Man. I said no already, dude!
- There's a big list of games. You can sort by Category or A-Z. Problem is I don't want those games. I want to play something I already have.
- Phone fits nicely into clip. The clip is spring loaded I guess. It has rubber on both sides so as not to scratch your phone. Pretty secure. Phone is a bit heavy, so if you tilt too far towards you, the clip may try to close on you.
- Unit also comes with a stand for tablets.
I mentioned above about getting another app to map buttons to a touch screen. I am currently trying out something called Game Controller 2 Touch. It's $4.99 and got good reviews. It took me awhile to figure it out, but here's what I learned:
- First take a screen shot of your game where you want to map buttons. This is very important because in the software you can set your background to that picture. No need to go back and fourth in the game testing keys and they aren't in the right spot. Oops! I learned that 20 minutes too late. You enable GC2T as your Input Method and you can make keys for up down left right, etc. Then in Configuration is where you can make a Touch Profile.

There is a moga universal driver app that allows you to use it with other games. I have the pro and used it with my M7 and M8 mainly used mine with emulators. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.obsidianx.android.mogaime
another thought would be to get an OTG cable and then just plug in a wired X-Box controller.

Let's chat about the Samsung Gamepad ($79.99)
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/EI-GP20HNBESTA
You can get a $30 discount on the Gamepad when buying with the Gear VR from Samsung. Enter coupon code STAVR1 at checkout to receive $30 off Samsung Gamepad with purchase of Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition.
So anyone with the Gamepad, is it really necessary? I didn't order one with my Gear VR and wondering if it will actually be much use.
I was considering the samsung gamepad for a while.... But it seems like it might have some compatibility issues with emulators, and it seems lacking a bit in terms of button placement / d-pad.
I was going to get a PS3 controller with clips, but the Note 4 didn't work with it, at least not reliably. So I sent that back.
I settled on the the Moga Hero Power instead, its $35 on amazon, I picked mine up for ~40 at target. It has two modes, legacy and current mode so it is pretty much 100% compatibile with everything, and it doubles as a phone charger in a pinch. I have really enjoyed mine; using it with PPSSPP and other games and emulators, 100% no issues. Its a little bit clicky and loud compared to some console controllers, but it feels extremely accurate.

Are the MOGA controllers confirmed working with the Gear VR? Someone with their unit already should test the compatibility.

I have ordered a samsung gamepad from ebay for 40 bucks, waiting to see what the difference is. As for the Moga, I have the new Pro model and in its stock for I've heard it does not work. But since I am rooted I use the Moga VK
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ca.sandstorm.mogaime.gui
With this app and the rooted function of selecting a keyboard to be the gamepad I have had good results with the Gear VR. So far the only app that I have found trouble with is the BLUEVR (underwater swimming) the controller works for forward, backward, left, right but the four buttons YXBA don't respond. May just need to be re-mapped but it works. Also with the moga and this app I can play all of my emulators and other non supported games. The Moga universal driver works also but I have better luck with the VK app. I will post an update to give feedback on the samsung controller.
FYI, stick to a stock ROM, I went to a custom superstockrom and now the VR wont work.
I have the Samsung gamepad and the buttons are unresponsive, the left "joypad" clicks and doesn't move smoothly, and I have to switch it off and on again, sometimes 10+ times to get the bluetooth to connect with my phone. And I've never been able to get it to connect while in VR. I always have to switch it on and get it to connect from the bluetooth screen first. If I switch the controller on while in VR I get a "Bluetooth connected" / "Bluetooth disconnected" message every 5 seconds.
I gotta say, it's the worst Samsung device I've ever owned.
Still, I CAN play games it with.
I use my ps3 controller with sixaxis and if works perfectly
Moga pro w/ ab
Ps3 controller using sixaxis as well and works great with vr
UPDATE
Received my samsung controller today and personally I dislike the form factor compared to the Moga or even the PS3. The left thumb stick is stick and grinds a bit, as do the other but the left is the worst. The buttons feel like cheap clicker style buttons, With all of that the controller is nice in function with the VR, I may have been due to a bad button map on the Moga but the VR is more responsive to the samsung controller, also something to be said for the built in storage space in the VR case, the Samsung controller fits perfect. So at this point I would say its a toss up. Either way you go you are going to have some sort of issues be it feel or compatibility. Maybe once the Innovator comes off the box it will have better support for other controls. Hope this helped some.
I bought a samsung gamepad when I got my tab pro 8.4 and hated it.
I got this from ebay and in my opinion it's much much better and works well with vr.

My Gamepad experience
OK, I was a bit peeved at having to buy the bundled Gamepad version of the Gear VR as the solo version was out of stock. However, now I have it I am glad I did go for the version with the Gamepad.
Firstly there a few games that you can only play with the Gamepad, "Dread Halls" for example and secondly navigating the menu system is more comfortable with it. The controls needed for the VR games are quite simplistic, so the Gamepad works well. You also get the bonus of using the Gamepad with about 45 fully compatible phone games on the Samsung Console Store and it works with many others elsewhere.
Considering the Gamepad in the UK costs about £60 you are getting it for half that price with the bundle.
So all in all it's hard not to recommend.
.

Works Perfectly.
I've been using my PS4 controller over BT. Works pretty well.
I am satisfied with the Samsung Gamepad, I use the emulator PPSSPP with it.
Hi all, I just ordered my VR for the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus phone. What handheld controller do you recommend that is like a Xbox/PS controller? I'd rather prefer a controller that you can hold with both your hands, while enjoying the VR, instead of a tiny micro controller.
Recommendations please that works well for this combination.
I got the Moga Pro Power from Amazon! It's officially supported by oculus/Gear VR and works great with all supported games.
The Moga Pro is great, alternatively for a bit less cash the ipega controllers all seem to work very well (IPega PG-9021 / IPega PG-9028), I use the 9021.
Thanks for these suggestions, moga pro is out of stock most places, and even amazon is not in a position to ship them right now. I went to game stop to try my luck and the guy mentioned about Red Samurai Wireless Controller. Anyone tried this one? He mentioned that it works perfectly fine with the Samsung VR.

Yeah, I went to GameStop to buy the same. It's an excellent controller for the price. Unfortunately couldn't find the stock so had to buy the Moga. No regrets though! I've read in several places that Red Samurai works but few of the games may not have support for this controller (like Mortal Blitz VR added support for MOGA recently and some 3rd party controllers which may include Red Samurai too). Overall, I would suggest taking it. At the cost, I don't think there is anything to regret about!

Apurva, thanks for your responses. I think Moga Pro is the right choice. They were giving away the stock on discounted prices until few weeks back, and now almost everyone is out of stock, the ones that have the stock are selling it 45 and upwards.
I guess i should grab it at this price, as i doubt that soon it will run out completely. VR is selling like hot cakes. While commuting to work to chicago downtown, i've seen couple of folks on their VR in the Metra trains.. and people looking over them with anxiety.. lol

I saw Moga Hero Pro in Target for $20. Everything's same except the size and a little lesser battery (which should still last for several weeks). Also, VR is really amazing and you should definitely get it (unless you've got it already) but do not keep your hopes very high, some people get disappointed with the Screen door effect..

So I was at my local Target, and my local Best Buy is next door, couldn't resist going in to play with my future phone (got home delivery). Not much hullabaloo happening, but did play with the VR. Great experience, can't wait for my own. But a heads up, I grabbed the one steelseries status xl Bluetooth controller left on the shelf. The 2 minutes I was playing with the VR was enough to realize a controller is going to make the experience much much better. And once the hoardes of new VR owners realize the same it may be hard to find a controller quickly. But then again, there's always Amazon.
Maybe a non issue, but seeing only one I the shelf with a lot of empty space made me think of grabbing it now.
Now I just need the darn phone and gear! ::deep breaths:::
