Hi guys, I'm facing a problem with me Z1 C6903 with S/N CB51xx which I guess it's packed with JDC panel and from what I've understand, are one of the worst kind for Z1.
The colors are way to washed out for my taste, even if I look at the display dead on. I hate this....I've played with "White balance" on different settings, but didn't find anything that could fix colors being washed out. It's like, the screen is to bright from the factory to compensate the sunlight visibility, which I understand, it's really nice, but consequently the saturation gets washed out. I don't know what SONY was thinking....Opticontrast my asssss, I WANT VIVID COLORS damn it
Is there any solution to this ? A tweak in the build.prop or something, a workaround ? I'm running stock 4.4.4 / 14.4.A.0.157 btw.
Thx!
I know it's not justice for comparing the IPS desktop PC display vs Z1 display (see screenshot attachment), but just to get the idea of what I'm talking about.
Well... I didn't knew about different panels packed with different S/N groups. I have one starting with the same S/N CB512xxxx and to be honest I can't say it's bad or defective or simple placebo effect. The only thing that I've noticed is even on the highest brightness settings, my Z1 is way darker than my sister's M2 Acqua.
If it's a hardware issue as you stated then the only thing we can do about is change the panel and digitizer...
Edit: I bought mine on Germany.

Comparing my z1 to my old s2, which has a Chinese replacement screen in it I've noticed that the colour on the z1 is a fair bit less vibrant, (is slightly less bright than my z1 too), I was wondering if you can change the colour scheme? My s2 has 3 or 4 colour schemes (e.g. Dynamic) so I was hoping the z1 has the same, or maybe an aftermarket app that might help? This thing is pretty dull compared
Cheers
The fact is, that the colors of the Z1's screen are not dull, they are realistic and true.
I had an S2 myself and it shows completly wrong, unnatural and oversaturated colors. When you've used an S2 for a long time, you'll get the impression that normal colors are dull, when in fact they are not and the S2 colors are wrong.
That's the problem.

Totally agree, having worked calibrating TV's a few years back I hated my S2 screen when I first received it until I realized I could change to a movie setting which made the palette a lot more comfortable on the eye.

Galaxy s2 uses a Super Amoled Plus display it is a completely different technology than the LCD with Triluminos found in Z1. The Amoled displays are characterized by oversaturated and unnatural colors. Xperia Z1 display has more natural color reproduction.
It is a matter of personal preference but the fact is you will never be able to get such color saturation on Z1.
as a S3 owner, I can agree, AMOLED has way too many flaws that puts me off from getting anything with AMOLED screen. It was basically unreadable under sunlight.
It's art not reality
I for one, still own & use a GS2, & still love the colours. I have it set to "Movie" mode, because the tones are somewhat warmer. Other screens just aren't as much fun. The screen on the S2, still going strong after all these years, looks like something out of the future, like something we would've imagined existed back when Blade Runner came out. It's great. Call it unnatural, that's fine with me. It's not natural. It's a phone. It's art ifice, not so-caled "Reality"...
The day will come when all that seems passe now, such as Scott Forstall era iOS, skeumorphism, Android Gingerbread, Super AMOLED+, etc, will return, & be "retro" cool...
Wait for it
Anyone having the same issue as me? Cause it seems that My set that I just gotten today (Green color) has the usual yellow tint that is slightly visible, but not as serious as the z2. Can be seen when placed side by side the retail demos of z3 and z3c, it seemed like there may be different manufacturers for the display as well. It's not cool white anymore.

Yes there are different manufacturer, mine also has less white whites than another unit. But overall mine has better contrast so... As for the yellow screen it is not necessarily a bad calibration as displays whites are usually too blue in comparison to daylight "real white".

Ahhh I know right. The color actually looks decent, due to it being slightly yellow, but mine has slightly more yellow, nearing the z2 one. So I'm going to go down service center to check tomorrow.
Hello there,
I bought my z3c off amazon, noticed after a while the screen got quite pinky when at lowest brightness.
So i got a replacement. Just before I send back the pinky one, here is a comparison between both screen (left : pink & old phone, right : yellower new one). The picture was taken at custom 5000K with a nikon reflex, then color balanced to 6500K in lightroom.
not sure what to think about this pretty big white balance difference between only 2 random devices.
Any insight is welcome.
Cheers.
Do you have any of the color enhancement options enabled (X-Reality or Vivid)?
I have both turned off and find the phone's white balance is actually better than most people seem to be experiencing.
I do notice that some Z3 Compact displays look different. For example, the ones displayed at a Sony Kiosk here look different (more bluish) than mine.
I think that Z3 Compact is not the best screen I've seen. I've just sold a Galaxy S5 and it was a better screen.
What I see in my Z3c is that the screen is not very uniform, specially in low bright modes.
Despite all, the screen is good. I hope that Z4c would be a bit better.
Tried with xreality things on and off. doesn't change a thing.
Oh and the replacement device i got from amazon, it has lightbleed this time
Seriously, poor quality control from Sony. sending them both back. tired of this $h1t :/
Greetings everyone,
This is what happened. I dropped my phone on a rock and smashed the screen and the touch screen was not working, although the display was ok. I took it for servicing and they replaced it with a 'original' screen. As soon as I got the phone in my hands I noticed a terrible white balance and washed out colours on the UI. I balanced out the white balance as much as I could, turned on Mobile Bravia engine, and its still not a perfect white balance and the colours are still wahsed out on logos of Facebook,Viber etc. At first I thought it was a non genuiune screen, but when I opened the album and viewed the pictures, the quality is just as before, crystal sharp image and very vibrant colours. This absolutely blew my mind because it doesnt make any sense, how can the UI be washed out and the pictures are perfect quality? If anyone could get me some feedback is there anything I can do to fix that I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

There are two different genuine screens used in Z. Sharp and JDC.
the Sharp screen is know for its washed-out feel and the JDC has better colours.
Also, bravia engine is not system wide, it works only in sony's stock album and video app.
You can try flashing Zombie kernel by @Tommy-Geenexus, it has pre-tuned and adjustable gamma controls. Though, I prefer the gamma settings as they come with Zombie.
Thanks for the reply and information. I'll try the Zombie kernel and see how it goes.
Hi all
My other half has had a oneplus one for a few weeks and wanting something with the same horsepower but a little different in design I went for the Z1.
I find the Z1 quality in colour reproduction and brightness to be lacking compared to the Oneplus one both running CM.
Anyone care to comment ?
Please see the link below for some quick photos I snapped Z1 on the left , oneplus on the right

Many Thanks !
Hey,
adaptive brightness and livedisplay has been off right ?
I checked my white Z1 once against a white iphone 6 plus and couldnt see much of a difference.
Against a black sony z3 compact the zuk z1 display is a bit more greenish .. the sony z3 display is pretty cold.
one tip, dont compare the ones to often. i once bought a used iphone 4s where the display has been swapped ... it freaked me out so much that i had to sell it because ive always seen the difference.
in normal day usage you wont see a tint.
edit: did you compare the devices without a screen protection? those can have quite an influence.
did u tried to configure your display in the settings? u can set the level of blue red and green colour
Yes, I think that`s literally the only major drawback of the Z1, the screen quality is really not too exciting. Make sure to color calibration in COS, my screen was way too yellowish before.
I have 2 Zuk Z1 devices. The oldest one has a better screen (same system, clean install).
Hi thank you all for your responses.
Adaptive brightness and live display were off.
I started playing around with some colour calibration to see if thing will improve.
Soulripper that would explain a lot of they switches panel supplier .
As you can see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/zuk-z1/help/batch-screen-t3336418
I could obtain a satisfying result by playing with colour calibration, but it isn't as good.
i compared the iphone 6s plus of my brother with my own z1 and found my z1 display has warmer colors then the iphones. with livedisplay day 6800k it has the same color like the iphone display.
Thank you all ! I have been playing with the live display option and things have improved.
Also I have stopped looking at other phones
