Way to keep an app from updating on N6 5.0.1? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is probably more of a OS question than specifically a N6 question but I recently bought a N6 and I have a lot of apps I do not want to always update when I run updates in the Playstore. For example, on my old S3, I could disable an app from updating so it would ask me if I wanted to update it when I run "update all". It would start the updates but the ones I had disabled would specifically say do you want to update this and give me the option to "skip".
I have several apps I do not want to update when I click update all and manually updating 20+ apps at a time is annoying.
Thoughts on how to do this on the N6?

dont press update all, as that will update all of them. just update the apps you want to update.

If your N6 is rooted, you could try Titanium Backup to detach the desired apps from Google Play. It was working in the past but I don't know if it still does...

[Q] Phone thinks I have an app update, but nothing on Market page?

Every now and then I'll get a notification that I have an update ready. I click the notification to open My Apps and...nothing needs an update.
I have noticed that my phone will randomly delete a paid game of mine, Totemo Full, and I've given up on reinstalling that. Would that be causing the issue? Did Totemo get a recent (like < 1 week ago) update?
What exactly, quoted, does the notification say? A lot of apps are set to update automatically, these apps might be telling you they were updated, not that an update was just available.
Quick tip: you can always go the market page for each app to see when it was last updated. Totemo is here, and it appears it hasn't updated since July 29.
Mine will sometimes say that there are more updates than there really are, but I've never had it tell me there's an update when there isn't yet. Have you used Titanium to freeze any apps, by chance?

Your apps disappear cause some of the by default get installed to your media. You can fix this by going to settings /applications /manage apps/media area and the O. Es that have a check mark by them, click on it and select move to phone and they won't disappear anymore. As far as the updates go, and as the other post says apps are set to update automatically and thats why you can't see them. It's just letting you know an update has been done. Hope this helps
I had a customer with this problem yesterday. Try going to market>menu>my apps> then look at each non installed app and look for ones that say "update" (for him it was myverizon and vz tones)

There are a few different threads on this......what is happening is your default account is switching over to a secondary account. If you go into accounts under the market menu and switch your account, you will see there is in fact an update for an app purchased on the other account. I am desperately searching for a fix to this. I now have apps split between the two accounts and if it weren't for my company using G-apps for e-mail now, I would delete second account.

This is not happening for me. I have only one google account on the phone. I have turned off automatic update for each app where it was turned on. I get a notification every day that there is an app with an update; open the notification and find that there are no apps available to update.
This version of the market has issues, for sure.
Just go to settings/apps & clear market data. You might also have to do that if you have updated an app outside the market.

I've tried that; it doesn't fix the problem (and I have no non-market apps installed.) It's more of an annoyance than anything, but I just wanted to point out that this is not always explained by an app with automatic updates enabled (which should give a notification of their own, by the way), or having a second Google account on the phone. The market app is problematic, period.

I get this too sometimes and find it to be Verizon apps like "Verizon Video". When you go to "My Apps" in the market scroll to the very bottom of the list and you might see it there. That's where I found my missing updates.
Yep most often Verizon apps. Annoying

Be wary of "forcing" OTA updates using Framework Services trick, breaks stuff

Be wary of "forcing" OTA updates using Framework Services trick, breaks stuff
I've seen this posted before in many of the "4.1.2" threads, but the info is likely to get buried in there, and since I have personally experienced this myself with my GNex, I figured I'd post this in a new thread.
The method of force stopping/clearing the data of Framework Services in the All Apps list to force any OTA to download will cause you a lot of headaches after the update. There are a couple of issues that I could see.
Firstly, ANY app (not just Google apps) that uses push notifications for anything WILL break. The only way to fix them is to either force stop/clear data from ALL of those apps (meaning you might potentially lose important app data as this basically resets the app back to when you first downloaded it), and set all of them back up again, OR to do a Factory Reset of the entire device after your device is updated.
Secondly, you will NOT be able to download apps from the Play Store weblink and "push" them to your device. The Play Store will NOT see your device anymore as it won't be in your devices list. There might be a way to fix this, but I haven't found it, aside from again, doing a Factory Reset and setting up your device from scratch. Even if I logged out/deleted my Google account, and re-logged in/re-added, this did not fix the problem.
Thirdly, Google Music/Play Store purchases of Books/Movies/Magazine/Music seem to be broken at times. Whatever the authorization process Google uses, you break it when you clear Framework Services. This happened to me once, and might have only been a one-time deal, but please be wary of this.
Now, like I've said, I've run into these issues on my Galaxy Nexus while forcing OTAs. The only way I could proceed with my newly updated device without constant Google Services/Play Store/Notification issues was to completely reset my phone and start from scratch. Now I know some people like to do this between major updates anyway, to start the device fresh, so this wouldn't apply to you anyway since you would update and then immediately Factory Reset, but if you're just planning on updating and keeping your device configured the way it is now, you will run into these issues (and potentially others that we don't know about yet).
A better idea to me would be to either wait for the OTA to be pushed automatically, or to save yourself time, flash to stock using the new factory images. Would save you a lot of time by doing that, rather than figuring out what apps broke and what you need to fix, and how to fix them.
Please be wary of this, and know the consequences if you do attempt it.
I can confirm that messing with the Framework to force the OTA does muck up purchases and update of apps through Google Play.
So be advised. You'll most likely have to delete your Google account off the device and clear Google App cache, restart, the reenter you Google account info to get Google Play back to normal.

Failed OTA leading to a minor disaster?
Damn and blast! I read this seconds after I did this little trick. I've not yet run the 2nd OTA... might I escape the consequences of my trusting foolishness?
I did it because the scheduled OTA failed and was aborted (said CWM Recovery) but I failed to note the exact error message. Could this have been caused by it being rooted, as little else has been done to screw the Nexus around?
Where is the update stored before it is processed? Not on 'SDcard'. Is it a full download or a stub for a later big download?

Yep I know I, oldblue910 and others have warned people about this and it was just glossed over..
Oh well.. At least people are trying..
This is how I updated mine and haven't noticed any problems. What would be a sure fire way of knowing that this method caused some problem? My account is recognized in the Play store and apply updates are recognized. Thanks.

Same thing with the Nexus S about 6 months ago. Peeps trying to get the OTA early and breaking stuff on their phones. So I left well alone during the 4.1.2. update and just waited.
This method always came with a warning.
No problems with my device being recognised on the web play store. Also reset my main apps to get notifications working properly.
All fine here

I massive forced this method to get 4.1.2 on my Nexus 7. I stopped this procces and deleted data again and again for 3 days until the update appeared.
Concretly, I had to do this trick 6 times in a row just before I got the update option.
And my device runs flawlessly, I can install from web gplay to the device, all my apps using push services hadn't a single problem, etc.
Before being that catastrophic, you'd get sure if this affects Nexus 7 or was a problem in Gnexus only..
I did this "trick" about 4 times to force the update. I did not stop the process, only cleared data.
My device seems to be running normally. I get gmail, can access the play store, and can remotely install apps from the web interface. I'll keep an eye on it though to see if I get any side effects.
seems to be only a issue with the nexus phone since no 1 has reported having this problem with the nexus 7.

Just for future reference.. To remove your Google account from the Tablet
Settings.. Tap on the Google account under accounts / Tap on the section with your email and little sync icon / Tap the menu button / remove account.
You are incorrect here in number of points. I've done this many times and while yes, push notifications stop working for a while in some apps, they start working again soon after. What happens is that you end up removing Google connection data from your phone, this is why the device becomes lost for Google Play, why push notifications fail and so on.
The reason why many don't have any clue that this happens is that this restores itself automatically. Why? Because it still has Google Account. YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESET YOUR PHONE. If you experience these problems, then just wait. Longest I had to wait for it to reset was about a day, but it generally happens much quicker.
You can speed this process up usually by visiting Play Store on your phone and just in case starting every app you have that has push notifications registered for once.
Your phone will do all the work.
Haven't had any issues since I did the force update. All apps still push notifications and at the play store website my n7 is still there with all my apps.

[TIPS] Disable Nexus 7 OTA/Upgrade Nag

I have been trying to research a way to stop my Nexus 7 wifi grouper from constantly nagging me to upgrade to JellyBean 4.3. I find 4.3 rather underwhelming and the problems it has caused with flash crashing Dolphin or Xscope browsers almost constantly has left me no choice but to roll back to 4.2.2.
Now that I am content to stay with 4.2.2 I wanted to stop the constant upgrade notification and the process to do so isnt clearly laid out anywhere across many fragmented threads about it.
Here is how I disabled the upgrade prompt on the Nexus 7 grouper wifi 4.2.2 - You of course need to be rooted.
Get Autorun Manager from the market - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rs.autorun&hl=en or http://goo.gl/xdLmO
Launch Autorun Manager, select Advanced mode.
Click the wrench, check off Show system entries and Enable system app disable.
Click the refresh icon to reload the process list.
Search for "systemupdate" and open the Google Services Framework entry.
Uncheck com.google.android.gsf.update.SystemUpdateService$Receiver
Reboot your tablet and be nag free.
I am not certain at this point if this disables market app update notifications but I would rather manually check for app updates than be constantly nagged to upgrade android.
Edit - Market update notifications for apps is functioning normally.
Enjoy.
Worked like a champ....thx
With the imminent release of 4.4 for the Nexus I wanted to remind people of this procedure for the purpose of disabling the upgrade prompt or restoring it if you followed the above procedure in the past.

i read this might cause partial wakelocks.. is this true? I absolutely hate 4.4.. the ugly white color, single screen settings, unstable apps, etc etc
It's absolutely ridiculous how google is shoving its stupid updates down our throats.
+ i deleted the downloaded zip update.. but when i go to about tablet > system updates > it still reads that download is ready.. what does that mean? anyway to reset and clean that crap?
No problem with wake locks.
I actually didn't need to freeze the update file.. The reason I was receiving an OTA notification after sideloading 4.4 was that the update that was trying to push was the smaller update (KRT16S) that followed KitKat (KRT16O).. which I was unaware of at the time. I wish they would put the build # on the update screen.. instead it just read 'you have an update to KitKat'. I assumed it was the same ota update that I already sideloaded.. not something that was new.
Also not sure if there's a way to get rid of that info for a new update in the settings. You can remove the notification reminder.. but under system updates, it will always read that an update is waiting. Best advice.. Don't look at that screen lol.
Best way to fix the OTA nag.
Use the OTA...

Yeah... that will get the job done... but it will 'break' a lot of other stuff as well. Google Services Framework does much more than just handle OTA's... so, not a good idea.

com.google.android.gsf.update.SystemUpdateService$SecretCodeReceiver ?
Does that need to be disabled too, or does it do something unrelated?
Why not just make a copy of system/build.prop, and change the version to one that was never released, like 4.1.3?

ALERT! make sure you download the new gear manager update from Samsung store!

I was bored yesterday and wanted to see if there were any updates, to my surprise there was a update for the gear manager. I installed it last night and apart from the updating process totally bugging out and freezing my phone needing a battery pull to fix....after the restart it installed fine.
I am now getting much better battery life out of the gear...it's at 99% after 3 hours off charger and moderate use. And that's with a watch styler face! So definitely worth doing this upgrade. Also...I would highly recommend uninstalling watch styler prior to the update. Then 're download a new one from the store.
I hope that I see some differences in power management.. So far what was the main issue for me is EXACTLY the same-
1. no change in contacts => they are still listed BY THE FIRST NAME - for me useless as I have a lot of contacts (In CONTACTS - GEAR Watch displays contact names listed by first name – even if they are listed on the NOTE3 by last name - this is true bug)
2. Still no way to see "contacts" and "favorite contacts" => You can only see one OR the other - I need BOTH!
Please list here things You would like to get - maybe SAMSUNG guys are reading this forum... for me:
- predefined SMS answers for the incoming calls
- battery level on the main screen (can be done through watch styler)
- ability to display temperature, atmospheric pressure, humidity… (all of those sensors are in NOTE3... but maybe some of them on the watch as well?)
- seconds on the main screen
- calculator
- compass
when going to the Samsung store it prompts to install on device.
On device it does nothing when trying to update. Anyone else getting this same issue?

V1.5.121601 issue
so I woke up this morning all happy about the latest Gear Manager update and the fact that going into notifications and selecting more notifications showed the texting app I use Textra. Selected it and tested and sure enough it worked just fine, now that part happened on the 26th. Back to this morning (27th) and there is another update version 1.5.121601 and without asking me the little beastie proceeded to update. We all know the routine after the update, comes the restore question I answered 'yes' finished. Went into gear manager (yes the watch did install) and selected Notification > More Notifications, and that where the program froze. after about 2min it came up with an informational prompt "Gear Manager isn't responding. Do you wish to close it?" elections were Wait and OK. choosing Wait gets a 2min wait time and then the same message, OK closes out the program and then restarts it.
I have,
set everything back to factory resulting in same result
reset the watch and the note 3 resulting in same result
uninstalled/reinstalled Gear Manager same result
any ideas or is there a way to roll-back to the previous version
thanks for reading :fingers-crossed:

How to manually update the camera APP?

I haven't updated my phone since day 1 in hopes that a bootloader unlock method may be discovered. I have been manually updating many APPs by going to the about page and using the update link there. There doesn't seem to be an about page for the camera though so I haven't been able to do this. I may have updated it once through Galaxy APPs but I think it was after receiving a notification. When I search Galaxy APPs there is no Camera APP shown.
No updates just for the camera, updates for the camera, if any, come inside the firmware updates

You can find some updated apps on APKMirror, as well. There's been a couple of Camera app updates, but I tried to install one, once, and it just failed, so I'm not sure if it's a compatibility thing or what.
