Ok Google everywhere (AOSP) - Moto X Q&A

I am running CM 12 nightlies on my XT-1052. I want to enable the feature "Ok Google Everywhere" but it seems to he hidden. I tried typing and speaking ok google everywhere in the google search app like the CNET guide but couldn't get it to work. Since Cyanogen has beautifully incorporated the Contenxtual computing core with Shake to wake camera and Pulse notifications on pick up, i was wondering why waste the Natural language processing core and set the detection. But i am not able to find the option to do so. Any sort of help would be appreciated. Also i am using PA gapps 5.0.1 full.

You need to go into Google Now settings, select Voice and enable the "from any screen" option. But... On my xt1060 I try to enable it and only get the spinning circle... So there may be an issue with it.

I dont have that option. Seems to be hidden (screenshots attached). But i am not using google now which could be the reason?

I would say that's probably why you don't have the option. Install the GN launcher and see if it shows up. But apparently it's not working on CM12 anyways.

I did try it with Google Now enabled but same thing. I am using the Google Now Launcher; it came with the gapps package.

Same problem here, it seems that the mic is not working when I try to set the OK google detection

I'm on cm12 nightly and it works fine for me. I do not use GN. I use Nova.

Cool. Does it work even when the phone is asleep? I can't find the option to do the same anywhere.
Edit: I had disabled store voice data in the account settings. The option is now available.

It works when the screen is on and unlocked. According to the voice training, it is supposed to work "with the screen on or when plugged in", but I just tried with it plugged in and the screen off, and again with it plugged in and the lock screen up... neither worked.

Yeah its not working for me either but the guys at Cyanogen will figure it. They are doing a great job with the device. Recent nightlies have been super stable and i know we'll get CM 12.1 (5.1) before Motorola release 5.0.2 smh.

Moto Voice no longer functions

After the recent Moto Voice update in the play store, my Moto Voice no longer works. When I go into Voice options, it won't let me check the Launch Phrase checkbox. Anyone else getting this?

So I was looking into this on my phone. I disabled the launch phrase and then it seemed like I was having the same issue that you were having. After selecting the launch phrase option again, to turn it back on, I had to wait 5 to 10 seconds or so for it to actually register and check the appropriate box.
Have you tried enabling and then waiting to see if it registers? My guess is that there is something going on in the background when enabling moto voice that is causing the delay.

I tried this and it still wasn't working. Then I rebooted and tried again, and it worked! There was about a 4-5 second delay like you said, but it came on. Thanks for the tip!

Was having the same problem it seems to be an issue with a buggy update to Moto Voice. I went to Settings>Apps>All>Moto Voice and hit "uninstall updates." That seemed to fix it. It installed the update again and it works correctly this time.

Hotspot quick settings toggle

Has anyone been able to get the hotspot quick settings toggle icon to appear? It showed up automatically on my N4 after I installed the lollipop update. So far, its not showing up on my N6. I've turned hotspot on several times but still no icon.
Google really needs to add a way to customize that menu.

Not sure why yours isn't showing up... the only thing I've changed which might be related is adding the following to build.prop
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
Hope this helps.

Mine didn't show up on my GPS Nexus 6 running on AT&T until I made this change.
I guess that's the reason then. I wasn't planning on rooting my phone but between this and the encryption, I might not have a choice. Thanks for the responses guys. I have no idea why Google would restrict that convenient button by default.

Thanks, the hotspot toggle showed up as soon as I added this to my build.prop.

What do you have to do to have it normally pop up in quick settings? Is it supposed to show up after the first use?

What carrier are you on? Maybe that's the difference? I have been unable to get it to show up on both AT&T and Verizon.

AT&T and Verizon phones both check your subscription before allowing the hotspot and this is why the toggle doesn't show up on its own
That must be the reason since that check is what the build.prop change disables. I still think its silly that it affects the button though. My plan allows tethering. Can't I have the quick settings button and when I press it, it can check my subscription just like the deeper settings menu option?

Guess what I was trying to say is there are many ways to set it up. I have mine set for priority interruptions only and it works great. I was only suggesting there is information on setting it up on the web including Motorola's site. Sorry I couldn't be more help

Oh... one other thing to be aware of is that a bug exists in Moto Voice that sets the ringer volume to 60% (if it is set below that, or even off), every time it is invoked, purposely or accidentally. Perhaps that is what is causing the behavior you're seeing.

I think Motorola has to update assist.
Right now seems that android's settings overwrite Moto's settings.
Assist works great for me. Every night I have it go to sleep and 12:00 and all notifications are quiet until 5:00. It just uses your priority settings, so I am not sure why it isn't working for you. Your screenshot wasn't taken during a time it was supposed to be sleeping, right? Because those settings (as shown) are allowing all interruptions.
Mine works fine, but the deal is: some apps override priority modes by themselves (looking at you, facebook stuff), you have to set them manually. At least, that was my case.

You need to set the days and time for "Downtime" in which Moto Assist (Sleep Mode) enables Priority Mode.

OK Google detection options grayed out (sometimes)

On every rom I've tried so far, the OK Google voice command sometimes works from the lock screen, sometimes not. When I go to check the settings for voice control, the"Always on" and "Personal results" are grayed out and obviously I can't use OK Google from the lock screen. But then sometime later the options are back and no longer grayed out. It works when it wants to and I have no control over it.
Is this a known bug? Or is there some custom rom setting that's interfering with voice detection? Very strange.
I thought it depended on whether the device was charging or not

No it doesn't. The Nexus 6 has the always listening feature like the Moto X. It's just weird that's been broken on 3 different roms.

Anyone have an issue where the 1st time you initiate the okay Google command that it brings up an unsuccessful web search? I have to initiate it a second time and it works. If I uninstall the Google search update everything works fine. Only when I update it do I run into this issue.

Actually yes, I have done that. But it's only a temporary fix. I don't see why, after wiping my device 3 times, and it still keeps happening. When I switch roms, I make sure to do a complete wipe from twrp (factory reset, then advanced and hand select wipes except internal storage, then wipe cache and dalvik before reboot into new rom) I don't understand why 3 different roms have the same issue.
At this point, I'm so happy with Candy rom that I can overlook this issue, but it's just nice if everything would work as intended.

Can I get longpress actions on apps on stock launcher like they were on nougat?

Like the thread suggests I upgraded to oreo and I regret it. The feature that I miss the most from nougat was longpressing on apps on the stock launcher and getting that app info action. I use fenix instead of the official twitter client and also some games, after some time they start acting up and when I force close them and delete their cache they work fine.
Now on nougat it was a simple longpress on the app you wanted and you could go to app info immediately. On oreo they changed it to some retarded options like select items, home screen and uninstall. So now I have to go to settings, apps wait for the list of apps to load and find the app and only then can I force stop it and clear the app's cache. Is there a way to get app info on longpress in the stock launcher or do I have to switch to another launcher like nova to get this functionality back?
Thx
Isn't this what you are referring to? 'force touch' actions work fine on Oreo.

Yup that's exactly what I'm referring to. In nougat when you did a longpress you had an option called "app info" but they removed it in Oreo (or I can't find the option to toggle it back on).
So for example in nougat let's say I'd long press on the playstore and I went to app info. It would take me to this screen

Now in Oreo if I want to get to the app info of the playstore I have to go to settings, then apps, then wait for the list of all apps to load, then find the app that I need.
It was a decent "shortcut" that worked great on nougat, but they removed it in Oreo. Most of the other launchers have that option, but since I didn't root this device I kind of got used to the stock launcher (ex touchwiz) so I'd prefer to stick with it. Just was wondering if there's a way to add that option.
I get what you mean now. Tbh i really doubt this feature will ever be re-added in future firmwares given how few people even noticed this was gone.
Yeah I figured if they took a feature out there won't be a way to get it back other than a 3rd party app.
Thx for the replies, guess it's nova launcher for me now
Shame. I loved that feature.

Yeah I know, I've been using nova for years back on my nexus 6p, and galaxy s3 before that. It's just retarded that in 2018 you can't have that option on a stock launcher. What's worse it was in there, and they removed it for no good reason. Oh well
