Hi guys,
Since you already know our device is getting older and now it is being categorized among the lower-end handsets in the android community. Games on android have never been so much better. The visuals on some recent games are breathtaking. I know the device we own is not so much of a gaming one and continuous gaming can adversely eat up the battery life and heat up the phone so please don't bring this up in the discussion which will follow since everyone knows it.
I want this thread to be a gaming thread for AHD. I would like you people to discuss about some latest and graphic intensive games and their performance on our phone. I actually want to determine the real life performance and reach the upper limits of this phone. Stats and benchmarks are just numbers and real life performance can be different. I will comment on the games which I have played on my AHD and share my experience with them. I suggest you do the same. For best performance you should restart the phone before launching the game and never run any apps in the background.
The games which I have tried personally are(I'm listing all the graphics intensive games here not the ones which are like Candy Crush):
- Asphalt 8 ( A great fun racing game with some breathtaking visuals. Overall this game runs fine on AHD. Can sometimes lag a bit when running other apps in the background but overall the experience is lovely)
- Leo's Fortune ( One of the most top rated and liked games on mobile platform. The game runs without a hitch. Can sometimes stutter on levels where there is snowfall or rain but it can be tolerated. I just loved playing it on my phone)
- Dungeon Hunter ( A lovely RPG. It performed okayish when I started playing it but after few levels it just stuttered randomly at some points which I couldn't bear and so didn't play it further on the AHD)
- Plants vs Zombies 1 & 2 ( They both run great. Love playing them every now and then)
- Riptide GP 1 & 2 ( Awesome Jet ski racing games. The visuals are amazing for a game which acquires such a low space on your phone. Try them out)
- GT Racing 2 ( Runs fine for the most part. Performance can be compared to Asphalt 8)
- Real Racing 3 ( I played this game an year ago on my AHD and the performance was not so good. It is such a great game, probably the best racing game on a mobile platform right now but for me it stuttered every now and then due to which I didn't play it further on AHD. I recently asked a member here about RR3 performance in CM11 thread since he mentioned he was playing it. Maybe its gotten better I think I should try it out again)
I've played lots of other games as well but I think these are enough to get the thread going. Please share your experience as well.
- Modern Combat 5 on this phone makes it feel that its getting really old. GFX aren't great (pixilated with textures) and its laggy too, the problem was starting the game or hoping it doesnt crash while doing a very intense level. I ran this game in Blisspop 2.2 (very stable and quick btw) and was surprised that it ran that bad.
- Madden Ultimate Team Mobile (It was a huge problem to start the game even in stock it was a problem it would just freeze and reboot) Cm11 I had better luck it would crash when loading but would load the game when I was lucky enough. Playing the game was okay too, wasn't all impressed or that since its a sports game. I think the problem is when its getting alot of data from the internet for managing the ultimate team, it would just crash there. When using Cm12 and Blisspop (especially Blisspop) It loads more often than not and managing the team would still be an issue, but you must load it one step at a time and not all at once, good enough. Best tip is to restart this device and then just run it, before other apps try to run.
Mincecraft- It just runs the game as if the phone was in the mid range category and im fine with that. Cm12 and Blisspop run it much better thus a slightly better view distance seems fine before the device lags when you put the view distance higher. Cm11 and lower (including stock) just take it down a notch and it runs fine.
I could understand why its now in the lower part of the spectrum and is compared to the moto g of last year and the moto e of this year. (judging from benchmark rankings, just slight differential)
The newer devices will always have some type of edge because it processes things much better due to the chipset architecture, management, optimization etc....

Thought it might be useful for us mobile gamers to post the sort of performance we get on the Nexus 4. Might even make a few of you eager beavers even more excited about getting a Nexus 4 if you haven't already.
Don't know the difference between 30fps and 60fps? Lucky.. try and keep it that way if you can help it.
In short - 60fps is the most ideal framerate; the most lacking in "lag". 30fps is also an ideal framerate, but it isn't as smooth as the former (alot of people don't notice the difference). Most console games run at 30fps, for reference.
So far, the Nexus 4 is capable of playing ALL Android games smoothly, with exception to those that are (temporarily) incompatible with 4.2
Frustrated with the heat & throttling the phone endures when playing some big games?
Try Matr1x Kernel to minimise heat with a small undervolt, and get more performance from a GPU overclock
After some testing, here's a little idea of how some games run on the device. I also briefly tested a few with different processor speeds too so I'll note down my findings there too.
*if you haven't played with your CPU frequencies then don't worry about my babbling about CPU speeds - the game will run fine if stated so and won't change if you haven't messed about with processor power saving*

3D games:
--
Max Payne Mobile - 60fps:
Seems to be a trusty 60fps on highest settings; brilliant graphics for a phone. I don't recall it ever slowing in performance at all on Roscoe Street station (first level after the prelude) or the tutorial level. Runs and looks much better than GTA3.
Minecraft Pocket Edition - 60fps:
60fps solid on Fancy graphics; doesn't seem to heat up the phone too much either which implies it isn't too demanding and thus should stretch the battery a bit longer. I could be wrong in that assumption, though.
Grand Theft Auto 3 - 25-30fps:
Somewhat disappointing performance. Runs acceptably smooth on default graphics settings (medium everything) at around 30fps, though with some drops in framerate. Also heats up the phone considerably, so expect throttling after 10 minutes. On highest possible graphics settings it stutters quite alot; I'd estimate it hovers around 15-25fps but it's really not pleasant.
Bus Parking 3D - 60fps:
Smooth as can be.
Temple Run - 60fps:
Yep, smooth and responsive as can be again. Still playable down to around CPU @584mhz, but will introduce a bit of stuttering ofc.
GnarBike Trials (free and pro) - 60fps:
Solid 60fps, but will still hiccup a tiny bit when a large number of explosion barrels are set off. You can disable these in the options if it really bothers you.
X-Plane - 60fps:
You guessed it - completely flawless performance again.
Dead Trigger - 30fps:
Capped at a solid 30fps if I remember right. Never drops below this on max settings; completely smooth.
Contract Killer 2 - 50-60fps:
Seemed more than playable. Didn't have it installed for long though so that's all I can say; around 50-60fps if memory serves me right.
Survivalcraft Demo - 50-60fps:
Was a little bit stuttery on highest settings, but only when walking around. This was probably just because the map was still generating around me as I explored, so should be nothing to worry about.
Asphalt 7: Heat - 30fps:
Slight stutter in cutscenes at the start of each race, but it looks like this game is capped at 30fps (difficult to be sure but it seems that way by my judgement). Stays completely smooth at that framerate throughout the game though.
Riptide: GP - 60fps:
Solid 60fps, very smooth and very pleasing graphics.
Chaos Rings - 30fps
d u o XIV: "I just checked Chaos Rings on my N4 right now. Works like a charm. Just to be clear, I started up the game, danced around the menus for a bit, ran around as the main character, and fought in one battle. It all worked flawlessly, and it all seemed to work at 30FPS."
Final Fantasy III - 60 fps
credit: dcarpenter85
Chrono Trigger - smooth as butter
credit: dcarpenter85
Theme Park - 60fps
Trial Xtreme 2 - 60fps
Need for Speed Most Wanted - smooth:
Need to test again, the consensus is that it does run smoothly.
--
2D (pretty much all run flawlessly):
--
Gameboid Emulator - 60fps:
Runs Pokemon Emerald and Fire Red as if you were playing it on a real GBA. No frame skipping whatsoever at a lovely 60fps.
GBCoid Emulator - 30fps?:
Runs games as they were intended. Not sure if the older Gameboy games ran at 60fps, it looks more like 30fps. Still, that's how it's meant to perform so no problems here.
Hill Climb Racing - 60fps:
Completely smooth at all times. No change in performance whatsoever, even on lowest 384mhz power saver CPU setting.
Osmos HD - 60fps:
Great looking 2D game and runs at a solid 60fps. No problems with lag here as you'd expect.
Doodle Jump - 60fps:
Smooth as butter. Clocking the CPU below 584mhz will cause a little stutter every now and then but still playable.
Bad Piggies HD - 60fps:
I noticed an occasional stutter here and there but it's nothing to lose hair about, it seemed to only happen at the start or end of each level. Otherwise, completely smooth.
Cut The Rope - 60fps
Angry Birds - 60fps
ChuChu Rocket - 60fps
[I think it'd be a challenge to find a 2D game that does lag on this phone to be honest, so i'll leave it at that]

If you guys have any requests for games to test then I'd be happy to give it a go for you, provided I can acquire them. Feel free to share your experiences with any games here as well.
Cool man. This is the first device with which I've felt confident to pay for games. I hope GTA Vice City is better than GTA 3. Also I hope crazy coaster comes to Android:

Can You try Wild Blood and NFS Most Wanted?
What about need for speed most wanted?
I tried playing Max Payne, my phone got hot as hell.
Does your phone gets hot too when you play?
I heard and read that the specs of Nexus 4 can handle xbox 360 level gameplay/graphics. I wonder when hardware will be utilized to max i cant wait to shift from xbox to just mobile. Because the CD-ROM system is hell frustrating.
Can you anybody test if Horn works?
How abt asphalt 7 heat? It is extremely laggy on Gnexus..
Unfortunately, Need for Speed: Most Wanted didn't work right. The graphics were glitched up and everything looked black (atleast, when I tested it), so this game may need an update to be playable on the Nexus 4. Whether or not this has been fixed yet needs to be clarified by current owners of the game since I *only just* managed to get a refund in 15 minutes after trying it a few days ago.
I'm downloading all 1.5gb's of Asphalt 7: Heat at the moment so I'll post up when I've finished downloading and testing it in an hour or two. As for Wild Blood and Horn, I'll try them some other time since they're pretty expensive for something I probably won't play.
@AntonJart: Yeah, my phone gets very hot in some games. The phone throttles itself when it gets to around 38C I think, so it shouldn't be anything to worry about. However, you can use CPU apps to underclock the processor and reduce the amount of heat being generated, sometimes with no loss in performance. But that's effort.
Need for speed works for me

Most wanted works fine for me

Horn does not work with the Nexus 4 I tried installing it and play on got when I first received the phone
In that case I'll redownload Most Wanted at some point and try it again.
Asphalt 7: Heat - 30fps:
Slight stutter in cutscenes at the start of each race, but it looks like this game is capped at 30fps (difficult to be sure but it seems that way by my judgement). Stays completely smooth at that framerate throughout the game though.
Has anyone tried batman or the latest mass effect?

Then you never owned a one X, early software builds made the phone temp actually too hot to even touch.
But still, it only overheated twice and when running go benchmark constantly.
Later, they fixed the heat dramatically.
But the word 'overheating' is one that gets used incorrectly too much, it probably isnt, its just hot.

Really
even LG OG have same problem : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1995107
One potential issue for long-term use revolves around overheating. I thought it may one specific model, but both units tested had significant drops in benchmark performance after extended use and, more importantly, after getting extremely hot. I cooled the phones down and retested, and after a brief warm-up period they were back to benchmark-breaking numbers. It’s unclear as of yet whether that means thermal throttling is in place or if the phone just cannot dissipate heat well enough for the new CPU and GPU, but one thing is certain: performance drops significantly, from way over competition from phones like the HTC One X or Samsung Galaxy S III, to just under them both.

hi
im looking at the nook hd+ as i love the screen, design and price
but i will be gaming a lot and was just wondering how the performance is on the most demanding game Real Racing 3
if anyone has tried this game on the nook HD+ or even just the nook hd please reply with a summary of performance
also have you had any problems with unsupported games.
thanks and have a nice day
The Nook HD+ is really not designed for 3D gaming. It has definite problems running this specific game.

I have not tried real racing yet but
Beach buggy blitz on the other hand runs VERY smoothly.
yes

*I can also vouch for Beach Buggy, as well as Air Wings, Dead Trigger, Dungeon Hunter 4, and Contract Killer 2.
Asphalt 8, you can even adjust to high quality graphics, but I personally find the lens flare distracting.
I went through the extreme annoyance of registering here (I freaking HATE that Capcha crap. I am a human and I can't see what the heck 90 percent of them say) to tell you that yes, Real Racing 3 looks and plays fine. Not sure what the other person has experienced, but I have had my nook hd+ since July and have had the game since day 1.
Funny part is, I just stopped playing to go to bed right before I read this. Been battling a friend off and on all day.
The only game I want that I can't download on my unrooted device is INJUSTICE. I currently play about 12 games, including Asphalt 8, Heroes of Destiny, Six Guns, and others.
Hope this helps. I have been coming here sporadically for years to find answers to my tech questions, and hope that I can return the favor for someone else.
ha ha I know what you mean about the captcha...after you post a few times though it goes away.
I had not tried real racing 3 yet but thought it should do well on the Nook HD+.
It does great with all the 3D games and demos I've tried before.
I tried installing it a few days ago.
Unfortunately it runs poorly. This will primarily be due to the fact that the OMAP 4470 utilised has only a single core GPU.
Rooted HD+
Been running RR3 for about a fortnight now, no problems whatsoever, well apart from 1.6GB of download in the last two weeks, just as well these things are not on the cellular network! Great game works well on the HD+
RR3 works really well. The framerate isn't that high but absolutely no lag/freeze
I think it might help to specify if you're using stock rom, or a CM rom, maybe performance is different for each. FWIW Asphalt 8 runs fine, at highest graphic setting, using stock rom
ALL of you should just use rr3 graphics app and have better framerate and enjoy the game more while not complaining about it so much. lol -> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=lt.hitex.rr3graphics&hl=en
high = smooth gameplay.
The problem with rr3 is that the graphical settings are forced and for this chip @ 1080p its just one setting too much. Use that app to lower it to where you like and its all better.
Asphalt 8 would probably melt our tablets. It is FAR more busy than Asphalt 7 and that was slow on the HD+. A8 is one of the best racers I have played though (S4 and Excite 7.7).

Asphalt 8 works better than asphalt 7. It isn't the smoothest but on low-very low graphics settings it is completely playable. Not nearly as bad as asphalt 7. I also spoke with one of the Gameloft people who works on the android version of the game and told him about how because this is playing at full 1080p the CPU has trouble keeping up with it and they are going to work on adding a 720p graphics option to the game.

Nice vid, nice review
So I was thinking, since there's no dedicated gaming thread, should we make this one into one. I would really like to hear what games people are playing, it can serve as an inspiration to what games others might wanna try out.
This device is a beast with the current best CPU and GPU, so games on this phone is really a treat, also the large screen just makes it an even better experience!

I've been playing NBA 2K14 and NBA Jam and both tend to freeze and cause the back of the phone to get hot.
I've been enjoying drastic emulator replaying all the DS games I've collected up over the years, very impressed as it never dips under 60fps?
Plague Inc gets the device really hot for some reason. The same hasn't happened to me with Trials Frontier or Ingress thus far.
The 3d mark benchmark blows away so many devices in performance. Give it a whirl.. Very impressive..

All phones get hot. OPO is better in dissipation compared to my nexus 4. Check what performance profile you are on. Freezing may occur if you are on "power saver" or "Balanced" modes.
I've had my Nexus 6 for about six months now and outside of certain games, it's practically always given me the fast, seamless experience I expected from it.
I've primarily played Marvel Contest of Champions on this device with only minor slowdowns here and there, typically when the game received a major update. I recently purchased Farming Simulator 16 and it runs way below my expectations. With the graphics set to High, the game stutters so badly it's not playable. On low, it's manageable, but very frustrating to say the least. I've checked the RAM, CPU and GPU while in-game and there's no spikes and nothing is being used at a high percentage - the game should be running without issue the data, but something is clearly not playing nicely.
I've scoured forums and I've read many things that it could be, but there are no solutions that I've found anywhere. Any help/ideas would be much appreciated.
i dont know about your cpu setup, but theres no stutter with my cpu setup(ondemand/deadline).
Just opened this thread to discuss games for the Xperia Z5, including recommendations and any issues you have encountered.
For the most part, games run very smoothly on the Z5, but once the phone gets warm (around 42) it will start to throttle with some more intensive games and the frame rate drops to around 20-30fps.
Another problem I have had is relatively common with Adreno devices. Games like Real Racing 3 and Need For Speed: No Limits fail to render in 1080p and also lag. This was the case for my HTC Butterfly s (Snapdragon 600 w/ Adreno 320) and users of other devices such as Nexus 7 2013 have also complained to the developer about it but they kept saying they couldn't fix it (despite there being a mod before that involved locking the rotation of the device). Asphalt 8 looks fine but either has poor antialiasing or is only rendered at 720p.
Some games I play:
Horizon Chase - Retro-style racing game like Top Gear (has a really nice soundtrack by Barry Leitch). Sounds really nice with the front-facing speakers. Runs at 60ps on Z5 but goes down to ~25-30fps in later levels or when the phone gets warm
Hungry Shark Evolution - Also suffers from a frame drop when the phone is warm, after about 5-10 minutes of gameplay.
Smash Hit - This one really puts the stereo speakers to use as you can hear where the glass is smashing
PBA Bowling Challenge - Fairly simple but addicting bowling game. Runs very smoothly and doesn't use a lot of battery life
Alto's Adventure - A one-touch endless runner snowboarding game. Very minimalistic with immersive audio.
I'm trying to look in particular for games that have good graphics and audio, such that they can take advantage of the stereo speakers.
What games do you play?
Root your phone, instal gltools, play nvidia games on z5, take that other phone, install BTcontroller on both devices and play

If you have root access, you can install apps that can overclock and underclock cpu, find them install one and set cpu fq lower, but the best thing to do is if you have a cese put it into deep freeze for an hour and then place it back on your phone
