I was playing around on my girlfriends at&t moto x and really really liked the phone, the feel of it, the os, I am still on an old 3g unlimited plan and want a new phone, so I'm really looking into the developer edition, only thing is that I am on Verizon at the moment and I could possibly move to alaska in the distant future where there is no Verizon. Is it possibly to buy the at&t gsm developer moto x and activate it on Verizon for the moment? From my findings on Google it seems like the at&t version is a better choice, so does anyone have any knowledge about switching carriers?

You can't activate a GSM Moto X on Verizon, they lack the CDMA chip needed for calling. Verizon did sell world phones like the Rezound that can work on a limited basis on a GSM network as well as their own.
Ahh ok thanks for the help, so I guess I'll just stick with the one I got till she blows
Hey guys! After doing a little research, I bought Verizon Moto X to use because I read that it's unlocked. I got it new from craigslist for a decent deal. I'm coming from a nexus 5.. I liked it but the feel of the moto x is just amazing. Plus I was always jealous of the active display and always on features.
Anyway, here's the issue.. The phone works brilliantly until 4G comes on. When that happens, data works great, and is blazing fast as usual, but I cannot make calls or send texts. I can receive calls and texts just fine, just can't make them. On everything below 4G there are no issues.
Apparently, since 4.4, you can no longer make new APNs. You can try, but it won't actually save them. For now, I am using an app that accesses the hidden menu to limit the phone to HSPA.
Is there anything I can do or am I better off selling it? Verizon are such ****s.. I don't think I will ever again touch their devices or services again.
Why would u buy Verizon moto for T-Mobile?
T-Mobile moto is unlocked and it supports LTE

It's supposed to be unlocked, it was in the colors that I wanted and it was a great deal. There were T-Mobile ones for sale, but quite a bit more expensive.
I'm pretty sure there was a Verizon Unlocked Moto X and a general unlocked Moto X because Verizon uses different antennas then companies like T-Mobile. Therefore using an unlocked Verizon Moto X WON'T work on T-Mobile or other carriers like Sprint

When you say 4G do you mean LTE or HSPA+?. The Verizon model does not support T-Mobile LTE. HSPA+ should work
The Verizon model doesn't support UMTS/WCDMA on the main band Tmobile uses which is 1700 Mhz/AWS. So it is likely getting confused when trying to switch between bands to make calls.
At the end of the day it was the wrong phone to buy for your needs.

Hello all,
If I would purchase a Verizon Motorolla Motto X, is it possible to root it to AT&T?

sorry.. but your question doesn't make sense. its sorta 2 questions in one.. lemme try to answer it for you...
Q1: Verizon Moto X to be used in ATT?
A1: Yes. Verizon is SIM unlocked. You can use it on ANY carrier that uses GSM/SIM cards. (LTE/HSPA/Data speeds will vary of course due to the modems or whatever you wanna call them built into the phone. No you can't just change a setting in the menu's as they're hardware specific)
Q2: Can the Moto X be rooted?
A2: YES!****** (If you purchase the DE/Developer Edition, you can get the bootloader unlock code from Google/Motorola directly for free. If you purchased the regular retail version, you can purchase the unlock code from the Chinese middleman; look around forums here as the link has there's a dedicated thread for it. There's a fee for that route that converts to roughly around $40 USD'ish. There's another of rooting, but its dependent upon which version of KitKat are you using and how much you want to deal with ADB/FB commands, scripts, and also SS for custom roms. If i lost you here, then stop thinking about rooting your phone altogether on the Retail/Non-DE version of the Moto X..you'll end up with a very nice paperweight.)
Good luck.
Thanks for the info!! Actually I am completely clueless when it comes to an Android (I currently own an Iphone). I would like to upgrade to Android but I want to buy new. I found the Moto X for $100. through Walmart. Now, I am currently using Net10 which is AT&T, and the Moto X is Verizon. That's the reason I was curious to see if I could somehow change it over to AT&T. Thanks again for your time
If you're seeing a Verizon moto x for $100, then it is likely an on-contract price. Meaning you will need to sign up for Verizon service for two years. I don't think this is what you want.
Unless you are thinking of moto g, which does sell for $100 off contract. In which case you should ask on the moto g forums.

Ok, lets go over this again... Yes, Verizon uses CDMA/EVDO for its Voice, SMS and 3G data. For LTE they use Band 4 and 13.
However, Verizon's phones include Quadband GSM radio for global roaming. The X also includes HSPA/HSPA+ support as well. As a condition of Verizon winning the 700Mhz spectrum auction for their LTE a while back, their LTE phones are SIM Unlocked. This is what allows you to put a Non-Verizon GSM SIM into the X or other VZW phones, set the APN settings correctly, and get working non-verizon service.
There are conditions, like you have to get the APN settings for the "target GSM carrier" EXACTLY right, and data speed is dependent on the "target GSM carrier's" network in your area.
And yes, I've done it with many of my Verizon phones (X, Galaxy S4, Lumia 928, BB Z10 and Q10, iPhone 5 and 5S, etc), using my work issued T-Mobile and ATT sims.
There are several threads about using a Verizon Moto X on T-Mobile and ATT that cover it more in detail.

Agreed. Popped in my wife's ATT simcard from her Iphone5s into my MotoX to prove a point to her.... surprising thing was... i picked up ATT LTE w/o having to configure anything on my VZW Moto X. just got lucky? who knows.. go figure.
The LG G2 is basically a better Nexus 5. I've been looking at the Nexus 6 (and G3) and honestly the G2 is still pretty fast and does everything I need, plus it has unlocked bootloader exploit which is a huge plus.
The only question is, will we get a stable L rom? Will Verizon give us an update, and how long will it take CM/AOSP?
If Verizon actually gets the Nexus 6, I would seriously consider getting it. I still love my g2 though.
Thanks Devs, from my LG G2
Nope, not happening... 5.9" display is just too big. The G2 with a 5.2" is at about the max I can handle with one hand, and I use my phone almost exclusively one-handed. I actually passed on a OnePlus One because of size, going to the N6 is just too big.
I am hoping the playstore version has VOLTE support so we can avoid the Verizon branded Nexus. As long as the device supports VOLTE we can use it on the VZW network, thanks to the 700mhz specturm that VZW uses for its LTE. I'm sure Verizon will try to find some BS loophole to try to exploit to maintain their control. Back on topic... I definitely get the Nexus 6 as I am Nexus fanboy!
Moto is and has been known for their crappy cameras. Even the new Moto X is crappy especially considering that it is a late 2014 device. The Nexus line is and always has been known for using crappy cameras, even the Nexus 5 took a step back from the G2. Put the two together and I wont touch the Nexus 6.
I am considering going to the n5 to be honest the price will go down and if they release a 6 in phone I feel they will keep the n5 around for a bit.
Finally ready to ditch Verizon and move on to a company that will let me text and call from my house. I was thinking the droid turbo because moto apparently has the best radios but idk

Google has already stopped making the N5 I believe.
I am also considering the Droid Turbo, it has a huge battery + Moto radios, but they have locked bootloaders.

I think they are locking it down via your account. Although I guess anyone could turn it on. For the LG G2 you needed an update and you had to go into your account to turn it on. Doesn't makes sense why you would have to do that, I think its just one more point of control maybe to exclude devices. Maybe that is the loophole in the 700 Mhz block rules.
Maybe they are requiring some kind of special software that the device manufacturer or google will have to implement to get it to work? I think they are going to do anything they can to exclude devices they don't approve.
I'm on Verizon now with a HTC one m7. I'm not upgrading but I will be buying a nexus 6 and switching from Verizon.

If Verizon gets the Nexus 6, it's very likely that it will be my next phone. I have a Nexus 7 (2013) and love it. I think with a Nexus 6, we could possibly get Multi-ROM, which would be amazing. I'd love the ability to test drive new ROMs without going through the whole backup/restore process. I think the only things I might miss would be knock-on (easily fixed with a custom kernel, of course) and the IR blaster. I actually do use it.

I love the IR blaster and KnockOn. I'm not sure if the Nexus 6 will support the CDMA bands and such. Being limited to just VOLTE 700mhz is sucky. What about 3G and such?
5.9" is too big. I passed on the Note 3 for the G2 because I travel often for work and require being able to comfortably dial/text/email/facebook using one hand while I drive/eat/fiddle with the radio (lol).
I really love my G2 but I fear that all future next gen devices will be ~6.0"

I'm pretty sure the play edition N6 won't support CDMA unless Google has changed its stance on the matter. Either we will have Verizon release another "Nexus" device for us that officially will always be behind. Or we will just have to stick with the play edition N6 and anyone that doesn't have LTE in their area is SOL. But as of now Verizon's LTE footprint is supposidly just as large as the 3G/1x footprint so I would imagine there wouldn't be too many issues.

Once you active voice over LTE via the website that is all you have to do. Stock LG roms have the ability to switch voice over LTE on, not too sure if any CM/AOSP based have the ability to do so yet. You don't need the crappy Verizon software the advanced calling 1.0 or whatever to use voice over LTE. I'm pretty sure either it will be enabled by default in future devices as VOLTE becomes more popular.
I just hope it works with lte from metro pcs or other mvno carriers. I'm actually leaving Verizon for this phone.

Cool, which ones? I has on a LG G3 ROM on my G2 but went back to a Verizon Stock -based one to get VoLTE. I would love to go back to the G3 ROM if I was still able to have VoLTE.
I'm not sure if G3 ROMs have it or not. I know xdabbeb's ROM has it and the stock Verizon 25B and 26A have it.

Yes those are Verizon stock ROMs. Not just a LG G2 stock ROM. Verizon had to push a software update to enable VoLTE. They controlled the feature.
I'm pretty sure any ROM can eventually have the option to enable VoLTE. Once activated on the site we very well could be accessing VoLTE without being on Verizon software. I haven't seen much clarification on this, eventually someone will chime in.

All I was saying is that right now Verizon holds the keys to the VoLTE kingdom as I see it. They require a change on your account, which I assume shows up no matter what. But the key is the software update that is coming from Verizon. It remains to be seen if manufacturer updates or Nexus Google updates will be able to have the same update, or if there was something unique to Verizon in that update. I wouldn't put it past Verizon to have something special in the update even if it goes against the FCC rules for the LTE spectrum. I would bet that Verizon is going to have to be told they have to allow any LTE device on the network. Look at the Nexus 7 issue, IIRC, if you already had a Sim you could pop it in, but they lagged on getting it "in their system" for it to be put on LTE with a new Sim. Its something that shouldn't even have to be "in a system". You should be able to get a data LTE sim for whatever you want.
I get what you're saying and I agree that Verizon will try to pull some BS. We could very well be using the feature on AOSP/ non vzw ROMs without knowing (doubtful) as long as we enabled the provisioning online. Let's just hope that Verizon doesn't try to pull some stupid bs loophole and let us use any unlocked LTE device that supports the band.
OK... So I have spent what seems like days trying to research and figure this out so i hope someone here can set me straight.
I will be travelling to New Zealand in the next few weeks and will be spending six months there. I would like to bring one of the extra phones I have with me. I have a VZW Moto X 1060 and can get my hands on a Moto X 1053 pretty easily. Will either of these phones work in NZ? Any issues I might encounter, i.e., only 3g or something like that?
I would prefer to use the XT1060 because I already have it and has the bamboo back.
Any insight would be great! Thanks!
The XT1053 would work better most likely, but the XT1060 would probably also work. The best thing to do would be to look at the carrier frequencies/bands there, and compare them to the bands that the phones support.

A heads up, just for curiosity I checked with the carriers available and its says you will only get 3g with the 1060
Good luck!
I can speak for 1053 - I own 2.
In UK on Three network with Three SIM it was always in 4G (no LTE) mode and that was plenty fast (up to about 15/16 Mbit/sec download). I then roamed (technically, no roaming charges in France on the plan I was on) in France ( Paris ) on Orange network with the same SIM and it was in 3G all the time with speeds up to 10MBit/sec download. So even if it is 3G only it can still be pretty fast.
