T-Mobile N6 will never have VoLTE on Verizon - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a T-Mobile Nexus 6 I have been using on Verizon since it came out. This is by far the best phone ever. I have Android 5.1 with HD voice and VoLTE enabled. I have been through all levels of Verizon tech support and have been told that my Nexus 6 will never have VoLTE activated on my line because I am using a phone purchased from another carrier. I have not been given a clear answer as to what in my phone is not compatible with VZW's VoLTE. Does anyone have any suggestions?

You can set it up in my verizon I believe. I was able to do that though I did that way before I changed my phone to nexus 6

My GPS N6 won't do volte either even though its activated on both ends. They say my device will always be an unknown in their system.

I don't believe that at all. My Moto purchased N6 has VoLTE right now and has for a few weeks now.

I put my sim in my daughter's Droid Maxx and was able to get the HD voice option added to my line, but the feature or VoLTE will not activate on the VZW network with it in my N6. Tier 2 support told me it will never be compatible or activated.

Is it activated on your account? If so enter *#*#4636#*#* on your phone dialer.
- When the 'Testing' menu opens select 'phone'
- Scroll down to a button that says something about "Turn On VoLTE Flag" select it.
- Restart your phone and wait until you jump back onto the network.
- Go to your cellular network settings and make sure your preferred network is LTE/CDMA, and enhanced 4G LTE is ticked 'on'.
Done... I just did it myself. Let us know how it goes.

My sprint N6 running on Verizon had VoLTE right now without any issues.

Done all that. Mine shows being on, both on mine and their side. Doesn't work.

Are both phones running 5.1? What kind of phone does the other person have? Are you sure it's set up properly? I had to tinker with my wifes iPhone6+ to make sure it was activated on her device.
The other possibility is that VoLTE may not be in your area.

Guys! All nexus 6 devices are created the same. I fought and fought with Verizon to turn this on for my GPS device. Got endless run around. Had a friend with a Verizon nexus 6. Popped my Sim in his phone. Got it activated. Popped it back and all is good. Also don't assume it works in your ROM. Flash stock for testing of volte.

For the longest time I couldn't understand why VOLTE was not working for me. I had it enabled before getting the GPS N6. I later found the ROM did not support it. Now most ROMs I try have this feature working.

I have a T-Mobile purchased Nexus 6 and I activated VoLTE on verizon's website and on the phone and it's been working since day one. I am using stock.

All the n6's sold here are the same model, xt1103. Keep trying.

I just updated to the latest m build and volte now works. Running Scotts stock build. I initially clean flashed Chroma and it quit working again. Reflash M and it works.

Chroma has been had voice over lte working for the last couple of builds. If you're talking about the early stages then yes volte wasn't present since a large number of proprietary libraries and apps were missing from the original packaging provided by Google.

I finally have VOLTE working! I did three things, though, and am unsure which made the difference. I installed Scott's stock rooted ROM as a secondary ROM using Multirom. Volte worked using this ROM. I then rebooted into my primary ROM, which is Euphoria, updated to it's latest version, toggled VOLTE off and then back on in the hidden menu, and I then VOLTE was working! I hope the FCC burns Verizon for treating their customers like this. It's all because of their refusal to add our devices to their database.

Will a Verizon X work on T-mobile?

I am ready for a new phone, but would like to be done with Verizon once they take away my unlimited plan. I read a few posts where it is said that the cdma phones would work on T-Mobile, the carrier I will be going to next. Can anyone confirm or deny the ability to use on both networks?
Thanks
Yes a Verizon Moto X will work on T-Mobile as it is SIM unlocked and supports band 4 LTE. It should be noted that it doesn't support AWS 3G which is the main band T-Mobile uses for their 3G service. If you are in a refarmed market then they will also offer 3G service on the PCS band which the Verizon Moto X does support. Most major cities are refarmed so as long as you are okay with the risk of ending up on 2G more often then you would on a T-Mobile Moto X then you should be okay. From my understanding T-Mobile is working on having almost all of their 3G service on the PCS band in order to free up AWS spectrum for LTE so this issue should become less of an issue over time.
With kit Kat on my vzw x, when I put my T-Mobile Sim in, I must manually enter T-Mobile APN settings to get working data and SMS. I haven't tried MMS.
With 4.2.2 Roms (version that the phone came with plus camera ota) APN settings came down automatically.
I get h+ in refarmed area.

Wow, that's interesting. Also interesting that the top section specifically references Band 4, yet the actual spectrum is not called out in the technical section below.
Thanks for the info. This is a surprisingly network-flexible phone... not used to that with Verizon phones.

Most of the upper level Verizon LTE phones released this year save the HTC One support band 4 either out of the box or will get a software update for it. Verizon is supposed to be making a big push over the next few months to add band 4 LTE service which is much needed here in Houston as our band 13 LTE service is so overloaded that sometimes I am lucky to top 3-4mbps.
Quite possible that Band 4 support was added in one of the updates that was pushed out, so most documentation wouldn't reference it. Best place to check would be the FCC docs when they tested the phone.

I put a T-mobile SIM in my stock 16GB Verizon Moto x. Here is what works and doesn't.
First off, 4G works! in the South Jersey area and it is Blistering fast, I have exceeded 40MB speed test downloads twice, Several in the high 30s and I am avg in mid 20s. Uploads are averaging 20+/- . Compared to Verizon this is like comparing Fios to 1999 era dial up. the best I ever got on Verizon 4G was 14 download but average between 4 and 9 !
The Network notification switches a lot between 4G, "H" mode, whatever that is, just bars and another which I didn't catch quick enough to read ?
Battery has been amazing compared to my galaxy Nexus, I got 7.5 hours of Actual "Screen on Time" which included some GPS use and an hour of music streaming total phone up time was 34+ hours. How long it will perform like this is anyone's guess, today i got about 6.5 of Screen on time. I hope this inst a trend
Now for the bad news - Using it as a Phone. Incoming calls are fine but, making outgoing is a Pain in the A$$.
When I dial a number, (which is a hassle on this KitKat dialer) it often goes to the home screen or back to the dialer. The Call Fails. I am not sure if my dialer is buggy or its a compatibility problem. the KitKat Dialer on the Moto X is an exorcise in futility. Google are you listening? Why reinvent the wheel. All I want in my Dialer is a Number Pad! and a phone book.
When I Open dialer I see Recent calls up top, the whole middle section says all contacts and is otherwise blank, the bottom has the number pad icon, History and settings dots.
Clicking the number pad icon enlarges the bottom section, which then goes all white and removes the three icons. I have to then click the back arrow and re-click the number pad icon to bring it up the actual dialer. .
At this time I can dial. and then the call always fails on the first attempt. Sometimes it takes several attempts to go through.
When I click send on the dialer the 4G disappears and I am left with just the bars. they come back when call is done but sometimes take a few minutes to do so.
If you Kill the dialer app or swipe it away, coming back to it you will have the same issues when trying to get the number pad (two attempts) if you dont, the number pad will open on first attempt. but the calls will still fail on the first try.
I also cant use the internet when in a call, whether WiFi is on or off. Is this a T-mobile problem? I could use the net in Verizon when in a call when on 4G or WiFi
The Data is set to global mode but I have tried both the other settings. On boot up I get a warning saying the SIM is not recognized which I just swipe away.
I am also having this problem. After making a call, the music player and the phones "volume" aspects cease to work., Meaning, I get no sound out of the phone, Music, notifications alarms etc.. This happens almost every time and the only fix is a reboot
I disabled all Verizon Bloat and a lot of Moto Bloat as well This could be causing some of the bugs? But i have tested several different configurations all with the same outcomes.
Hope this helps and puts an end to the - Will it work or not questions. There seem to be a lot of Net Know it all's that flat out say a Verizon Moto x wont work with a T-Mobile SIM or some other undocumented "fact"
Would a verizon sim work in a sprint or T-moblie phone?

[Q] T-Mobile to Verizon

We all know the Nexus 6 supports CDMA, and I have read posts all over from people saying it works on Verizon, even when it came from T-Mobile. However, what's happening for me is this...
I bought a Nexus 6 from T-Mobile. It works there. It works with Cricket. I have a Verizon SIM that is activated and works inside a Note 3 (with an adapter). However, when I put this same SIM into the Nexus 6, I get no bars and text that says Emergency Calls Only. Anyone know what's wrong?
Thanks much in advance.

Could it be that the IMEI is not white listed on the VZW network?
I have an ATT nexus 6 that would not register but I then purchased one from Motorola and that one has worked with no problem.
I thought it was because the ATT one was not white listed into the VZW system but the direct from motorola was. Not sure.
This is a known issue when switching from a GSM network to Verizon.
I thought that about the IMEI, but then how could it be working for others that bought from T-Mobile?
As for it being a shown issue when switching from GSM to Verizon...what would the fix be? I know there are a lot of people doing it. I just need get it going or know the trick to it, and then it should be smooth sailing.

agreed...i had same issue. phone works just fine now
I can also attest to this. The activation worked fine once it was trying to set it up from the beginning
Something you can do to evade the factory reset If you have the problem of "switching from global mode while on a GSM carrier" and then switching to a cdma carrier (Verizon) you first need a way to access "Radio Info" I'm using an app called Activity Launcher App for that Go to All Activities/Settings/Phone Info ... I noticed when you change from global on a gsm carrier it switches to LTE/GSM auto (PRL) ... you can switch it back to the default LTE/GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) but when you reboot it won’t stick so after you reboot with a verizon sim switch it back again to LTE/GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) then got to Cellular networks/Preferred network type and select Global .... then the phone will reconnect to verizon ... give it a bit and then reboot again and you should be good.

have you tried *#*#4636#*#* and changing the preferred network under phone information to lte/cdma?
I tried the *#*#4636#*#*, but it didn't help. So, I backed up and did the reset, which indeed seems to have worked. Wow. Thanks for the feedback all.

Lost LTE with *228

As crazy as it sounds, I was experimenting with roaming ability and did a *228 and #2 on my phone with Verizon. Since I did that LTE went away all I see now is 3G
Did not change the APN only have one and set on LTE for network....
Could I have messed up my PRL but I thought the PRL is now on the SIM?
whats a *228 and a #2???
*228 is NOT supposed to be used with a 4G SIM Card, you may have broke your SIM.
This hasn't worked on any lte device, why do people keep trying it? You need a new sim.

I knew this was a bonehead move thinking I could get volte work after updating radio. Cause not listening to my inner man!
Similar thing happened to me as well, after I updated to 5.1. Worked good for a day then all of a sudden I couldn't receive calls no more. I could make calls, text and use data. I called Verizon and they reset some things and the service completely went away, then we got disconnected. After calling back the rep said my sim got broken somehow and told me to go the Verizon store and get a new one. i think the first rep disabled something and couldnt get it back on.
New sim was activated in another phone then put into the Nexus 6 and all was good. Funny thing is I didn't do the *228 thing and my LTE was still showing when I stopped receiveing calls.

Project Fi on the Nexus 5

I couldn't find a good thread to put this in so I'll make a new one. I reported my findings in the Nexus 6 section but I think the Nexus 5 section should also know about this.
I was able to get Project Fi working on my Nexus 5, with in and outbound voice calls working and LTE data working. However I'm worried about international roaming or Sprint/Tmo/Wifi calling handoffs. I'm not able to verify if that works.
According to someone in the Nexus 6 Fi thread they weren't able to activate (or transfer their number) on a Nexus 5. I activated my Project Fi sim on a Nexus 6 and everything was working fine on it. Then I bought a nanosim-to-microsim adapter and put the activated Fi sim in my Nexus 5. I factory wiped my Nexus 5 since I like starting things off clean and setup my gmail account and other settings over WiFi. Then I installed the Project Fi app and opened it. The app activated Project Fi and gave me cell service. Everything so far seems to work fine on my Nexus 5.
Oh yea I'm also running the Android M developer preview if that matters.
How's it been going the last few hours? Any update on handoffs? Thanks for making this post.
So far everything still works fine. I hardly make/receive calls though so I'm not a good candidate to test call handoffs. I made a call while on WiFi and then disabled WiFi and the call wasn't affected at all. But I'm not sure if the call started on WiFi or not.
I can't believe this thread hasn't exploded.
just a curious question.. Why in your 4th picture does it show you connecting down to "H" when you placed the call? shouldn't it stay on LTE?

So what needs done to fully port this in, or are steps taken in the OP expected to have done so?
My *#*# programming menu has an option for voice over lte but enabling it does nothing that I can see.
I just went to another area in my city with full bars of 54/12 Mbit LTE and it does indeed always kick me down to H when I make a phone call.

Yea it's probably the same reason why T-Mobile wifi calling doesn't work on the Nexus 5. I'm guessing it's missing something in hardware or a driver or something.
At least I can still use Hangouts Dialer in airplane mode, so it's not nice and automatic like on the Nexus 6 but it'll get me by when I travel to Mexico in a couple of months.
Edit:
I just tried my Project Fi sim on my coworker's unlocked iPhone 6, but it didn't really work. In the contacts app it showed my number and he was able to receive phone calls, but data didn't work. Also the iPhone said it was on T-Mobile in the status bar.
Everything I know about CMDA/Sprint tells me that this working on T-mobile only.
Your Nexus 5 MEID hasn't been registered on Sprint's network. There is no way it's just going to work by inserting the SIM card.
Very interesting though.

Are you running Android M Dev Preview 1 MPZ44Q on a Nexus 5? Do you have a VoLTE-capable SIM (e.g. T-Mobile US), an LTE but not VoLTE-capable SIM (e.g. Cricket Wireless) or 3G-capable SIM (e.g. TravelSim). On mine, running Android 5.1.1 LMY48B on T-Mobile UK (3G-only, no LTE let alone VoLTE), *#*#4636#*#* > Phone information > 'Set preferred network type' shows >

As was stated earlier in this thread, wouldn't both VoWiFi (or 'WiFi Calling', as Google call it: http://www.xda-developers.com/google-open-source-code-for-wi-fi-calling/ ) and VoLTE (or 'HD Voice', as Google call it, confusingly with no distinction with wideband audio) require device support at the radio firmware level, even if the software firmware support has been open-sourced?

Hi all,
I installed the 5.1OTA and could not get Verizon Enhanced LTE (advanced calling, VoLTE, etc....) to work. I tried what everyone else suggested and nothing made it work (never showed the enhanced LTE setting in the cellular menu). Here are the steps I took in case anyone else is having the same problem.
1. Re-Install radio and bootloader from here: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95916177934540313
2. Enter the hidden menu using *#*#4636#*#*
3. Go in to Phone information
4. Click the TURN ON VOLTE PROVISIONED FLAG button (wont change)
5. Click the TURN OFF RADIO button
6. Wait a few seconds (for radio to turn off) and then click the TURN ON RADIO button.
7. Observe that the TURN ON VOLTE PROVISIONED FLAG button has changed to TURN OFF....
8. Go in to Settings>>...More>>Cellular Networks and make sure that Enhanced 4G LTE Mode is enabled.
I did all this and I still did not have data while making a call. I had to go to VZW site and go into my account and tell it to activate a device on my current line. I entered the IMEI and it gave me a warning about softcard and then went right back to same screen, When I clicked next it gave me a warning that it was unsupoorted device. After this it all worked perfect although the phone is still not recognized on the VZW site.
