So who is waiting to root the S6 to see if Samsung Pay requires a Non-Tripped KNOX?
I am seriously on the fence about it, in my opinion it is about a 50% chance it will be required, and even then will I really use it all the time?
On the other hand I love root and the apps I have that require it.
What are your thoughts, Waiting or no?
*We are assuming that any root methods will trip KNOX. Even if root is achieved without tripping KNOX a ROM requiring a recovery WILL trip it anyways*
I'm in the same boat.. So much so that I'm debating if I want to keep this device. I enjoy custom roms way too much. Coming from a Lg G2 running 5.0.2 AICP rom, it was really great.
More worried that with Tmobile and JUMP if I ever need to get a replacement device, that KNOX will cause issues when they receive my device. With my G2, i returned it but after I reverted to stock.
This is the first time I'm actually afraid to root and install custom recovery. I only have 6 days to decide if I want to keep this before i have to send in my g2 for jump

Two things to keep in mind:
T-Mobile doesnt care about JUMP even in warranty situations. Revert it back to stock and go on your merry way. Only Samsung cares and under JUMP you have warranty care as well, so T-Mo not Samsung takes care of the claims/replacement device
AOSP Roms may not come to the S6 for a while, at least not stable. The Exynos processor is notorious for poor support from AOSP roms like AICP, CM, SLiM and others.. Just a heads up

I'm aware Aosp isnt stable, which is fine. I'm ok with at least a stock base thats been modded. Custom kernal would be great to make the phone more energy efficient

We know root is available, it's been available since before the pre-order even went live. It still trips Knox though, and that's the discussion.
Personally, I'm waiting until either Knox can be bypassed, or we get confirmation that Samsung Pay won't need it. Somehow I doubt either will happen, but I'm willing to wait a while to find out.
tlxxxsracer: Don't count on custom kernels, but that goes without saying. A modified base would be nice, AOSP would be wonderful but unrealistic. Honestly at this point, the only reason I want root is Titanium Backup, an ad blocker and putting the Nexus dialer/contacts on the phone. Touchwiz dialer is simply awful.
Don't care. Rooted. Can't stand ads and need tethering (AT&T corporate account). But I would root just to block the ads. I accept the consequences and if I can't use Samsung pay, I'll simply use Google wallet, which will work everywhere Apple Pay is accepted anyway.

How do you put the nexus dialer/contacts on the phone?? You are running a TouchWiz based ROM so I imagine it won't just be that easy... I been trying to get it to work on my S5 but to no avail lol -__-

S6 already has root.... Only phones that have shipped are T-Mo and they are the only one's with root anyway..

Joe, reread my posts. I am choosing NOT TO ROOT, because I'm holding off for an option that either doesn't trip knox, or confirmation that tripping knox doesn't void Samsung Pay. Stated that in my first post.

Really hoping for this too. I'm on verizon so no chance of root unless there's a way to do it without tripping KNOX.

My Samsung Tablet non rooted says it currently has 18 days left on the battery. It has been on for 3 days. I use it for games at night. Not a phone but ehh close enough

I'm speaking from experience. Of course, everyone has its own opinion.
I think we are distracted from the topic.
i am also a note 5 user, and up until now, i haven't rooted it. i don't know why i don't carry that enthusiasm when i got the phone, unlike when i owned the Note 3 and note 4. maybe because my note 5 is already buttery smooth, or i am afraid to root it now since i can't find any safer way to root it, or maybe i am just being confused of the way we root it now. anyhow, when i was using the note 3, i also have the problem with s-health not working when i rooted note 3. so what i did was, i rooted the damn phone anyway, installed system app mover, backed up s-health applications, then move it off to system app to user application. rebooted the phone and open s-health, well what do you know? it worked. but i don't tried this on samsung pay since i don't have it on my phone, because of our region. anyway, try that solution maybe it will work for you, and if it worked, just keep in my mind that there will be no guarantee about your samsung pay security.

I work at Samsung UK and rooting is possible to do, but I would make sure you find someone who has already done it. It is not just Samsung Pay that stops working, most Banking apps will stop working also as it won't be able to authenticate your device. You will also Void your Samsung Warranty.
Proceed carefully.

I don't mean to be rude (it happens naturally without any effort whatsoever), but what is the purpose of this post? To warn people against rooting, or to suggest that it's possible to root without tripping KNOX?
If the former, that's pretty much a given (and the community has found ways around many of those issues.) If the latter, your post could be considered by many to be a troll without giving real information.
I'd donate for a root on my note 5 that doesnt trip knox.
Yeah I'll pay for this to I'll set down $30 to whoever can get this and prove it and what not.

I found a way to root without tripping Knox. Well, kinda. Root as normal (yes you will trip Knox) install twrp, and use twrp to wipe all partitions (except the recovery partition of course), and then re-install the stock files with Odin and flash the super su binary with TWRP BEFORE BOOTING INTO ANDROID the results should be a rooted Note 5 with a Knox counter of 0 no one try this just yet, but I'm 90% sure that's how I did it before. Once I get home from vacation I'll double check and write up a more detailed guide. :good:

KNOX will still be tripped. There's no known way to "untrip" knox. It's like a fuse. Even if it doesn't show as modified inside of android's settings, it will still show in ODIN mode.

Whether or not it logically should work doesn't really matter, all that matters is it has worked for me in the past. Maybe it was just a random occurrence, but as soon as I have the chance I'll see if I can recreate the results

You need to disable DT Ignite.
Read this article for a good summary. Basically, it allows carriers to load apps without your permission.

Yeah I'm pretty upset I accidentally clicked yes on the OTA. I just got the edge 6 today and was really looking forward to rooting it. So pissed it's now on 5.1.1, on to the waiting game...

Couldn't agree with you more. I mean their service is excellent but all these limitations are not appreciated. But I guess that's what bands us together to keep on searching for ways to seek freedom between the cracks.
Anyone know of any active developement regarding the 925V variant? Way too nice not to have root.

I've stuck with my ATT Note3 on TMO, and TMO Note4. My son has a Sprint S6 Edge on TMO and it has surprisingly quite a bit of development. If I knew anything regarding locked vs. unlocked BL's I'd have a go with this 925V. Just really surprised at the lack of development for this device. Sucks!
Unfortunately, it seems that we've been left in the dark. Surely one of the many devs would have a thread going with some sort of progress update if any were working on it.
@spadz93 That's kinda what I'm thinking. Too bad. I use way too many root functions to even consider keeping my 925V. Really nice hardware either way. I'll probably look for a TMO variant.
Verizon sucks anyway. Worst service I've ever had. I liked T-Mobile way better. I have constant dropped calls, missed texts etc with Verizon.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it useless... It's still a solid phone with decent hardware. Just because you can't root it and install custom ROMs doesn't make it useless. I'm more interested in a phone that works consistently everyday than I am the ability to push the hardware to the point of random reboots and overheating. Once I gave up root for 5.1 I've had next to zero issues with the phone and I like it much more.

Yea, my statement is a little exaggerated but no xposed is huge for me personally. I like to play with my phone and customize it. Without root and xposed, I can't do that like I could with my s4 so it bothers me
What upsets me is the fact that devs give up trying to root a phone if a solution doesn't come within a month or two, if the phone is the only variant that still doesn't have a root and it will take more effort than a few tweaks to do it. I've seen it over and over again with so many phones. If I knew how to even begin to look for a root on the phone and I had the money to buy phones that I could burn in the process, then I'd totally work at it.
what I dont understand is theres ppl with the Note 4 that are able to root 5.1.1 using King Root and no one has tried it on any firmware beyond OE2 for us yet..
I know one person said it worked for him on OF1 but need more to confirm before I update and update all my ROMs.

I enjoy it.... I also had it since day one. I unrooted mine and took the updates. Lol I need AOSP and we were never given the time to achieve it.

Did you try Adblock Fast that is build into Samsung 4.0? Download from App store and then manually setup using instructions.
I'm using it on my S7 with zero issues and no ads. Of course, limited to Samsung browser.
I'm using adguard which sets up personal VPN on phone to block ads. Seems to work for all apps but does hit battery life a bit. Worth it for me.

Yes. Legit. It got bad ratings but works perfect on my S7. I think people haven't realized you need Samsung Internet 4.0 or it won't work.

Bootloaders are locked. Flash secured and all. All us carriers, not the exynos, but all us snapdragons, including tmobile. We are on twitter and got a response from John Legere who claims to be working on a potential solution to at least getting tmobiles unlocked. Historically we have always been fine, but for some reason we aren't now. Doesn't make sense for the exynos to unlocked and SD to be locked imo

I'm sure something will come up eventually. Us folks on ATT are used to being screwed with the locked bootloaders. Think it might be new for T-Mobile users though. It might take a little longer, but ATT Samsung devices typically get root after some point.
I've had it since launch, my Nexus 6 basically died. I miss the debloating root allows, like how I'm forced to have the Directv app when I don't have any interest in having Directv. I do like it though it's a nice phone. If we can get root to remove the bloatware I'm for that otherwise I'll live with it for a year until something better drops.

It doesn't remove anything, it just disables apps that are able to be disabled. I can do that myself.

Yeah I disabled the directv app and some others myself. Glad I have expandable storage so it doesn't hog my memory LOL

VPNs like Adguard don't "eat" battery. What your seeing is that the system attributes all battery used by apps that access the internet to the VPN.

Seems like Pre-Lollipop builds were always hacked for root. Also, at least on my S5 G900A, Pre-rooted 5.0 was able to be flashed as long as the BL was kept OA1 (KK 4.4.4). But if you took the OTA to 5.0, no root ever! Also they totally locked it down with 5.1. FU ATT!!!! :laugh::silly:
But they sure did get into that S6 pretty fast, didn't they? Go figure.
I applied to this Samsung Mobile Insights program. Might get a free G935A or G930A if accepted into it. I do not know how I will live without root, but at least it has a sdcard. I do not have a good feeling about a battery that does not come out though...
About to get warranty replacement phone thru my carrier tomorrow.
Was offered S5 and an alternate to my G3 since they were out of stock.
If you were in my shoes, which phone would you get?!

The S5 is still a very capable phone. The display is top notch. It would really depend on what carrier you are with though. I know the att variant cant be rooted or unlocked currently and verizon has theirs locked down too, but as long as it comes with lollipop (5.x.x) software the verizon variant can be unlocked all the way to the bootloader.
as far as i know they are the only two providers who secure the s5 like fort knox. I could be wrong though. I have a verizon variant (900V) and its fully unlocked and rooted. I dont think you'll find a better phone in the same price range.
S5 is still a great phone. Only issues ive had with it over the 28 mos that ive had it is the low light blurryness with the camera and the fact that you have to swipe your thump across the fingerprint scanner. Having to do that nowadays kinda makes it feel dated. Other than those 2 issues, its a great phone!!
I just got an S5 to replace my S4 and I love it. I'm on AT&T and got the Tmobile version for the unlocked bootloader. I would totally get this phone again.

I have a s5 900v like you (verizon) & got it 12 days ago. . When did you root yours? I *had* lollipop until last Thursday after accidentally pressing the screen through my pocket....which proceded to accept the update I was avoiding. Now I have marshmellow and I'm not happy ???*
Been fishing through XDA and haven't found anything about rooting s5 on mm. Anyone have something to share with me? Thanks

I tried the root method (link within the thread u posted) about a week ago & had problems. To make a long story short, check out my remarks on pages 1-2 in this thread.

I'm just looking to root my g900v s5. I don't want to mess around with the bootloader (not yet anyway). I just want root before Marshmellow or verizon release another update to patch the *open* vulnerability.
If the dumb MM update didn't happen I would've had time to find lollipop root. I never had a problem w/ my s4 where the screen would allow a touch through pants or shirt pocket. Thought these things were sensitive to the touch of skin not clothing?? Cause of my problem was losing my s4 over July 4th weekend that I rooted w/ towelroot in 05/2014 (that I just paid off in May over 24 months w/ verizon)

Root looked do-able by what @painiac put together, which is similar to @jkrause's is in the link you shared.
Kingroot: no go
OneClick: no go
Towelroot: no go
The root (sorry, couldn't resist) of my problem is that I can't get a PC to recognize my s5 as removable storage. Since they don't this has prevented me from going any further. Take your time and pass on whatever you can...whenever that time is.

CLEVER!!! LoL! No, that was actually pretty funny! But oneclick and towel doesnt surprise me, but kingroot has been the "if nothing else works" as of late. I have a root program on my computer that i cant recall the name of off hand, and it does look like a malware program, but its been the go-to when all else fails. Ill look at my desktop icons and remind myself what it is when i get home. Its some chinese .exe is that helps in the interim
found it, its called "v root"
it looks like its malware, but the one i got works fine

I'd stay clear of Samsung from my experiences:
- issues with warranty and knox
- not easy to customise / flash / fix OEM issues with bloatware, root, other ROM issues that require root
- many variants mean even after 8 years of flashing ROMs, I still can't find what I need in the SGS5 section. I don't know what ROMs can be flashed to my device, the information is sparse and not easy to follow or understand
I'm looking to go back to HTC - they don't mind you rooting / customising (unless this has changed in the last couple years).

I disagree with this (respectfully). I've never had to return a Samsung because of warranty related issues or return one period, so warranty and Knox are all but irrelevant. Customization is a snap, flashing is a breeze, and bloatware (which is caused by the carrier most often) is easily solved with titanium backup. There are many variants, yes, but all the Roms are cross compatible as long as you flash the snapdragon based processor ones on a snapdragon powered device. The only sgs5s that were problematic were the at&t and (of course) vzw ones because of the carriers deciding to lock the @&$%/!? Bootloaders. Sprint and tmob sgs5s have always been an absolute cakewalk. Hell, I've bricked mine intentionally just to see if I could actually kill it. It's actually harder than one would think to seriously screw up a sgs5 esp a g900p

Hi mate, of course this is a difference of opinion and I'm not posting here to argue with you so much as to give reasons for my post above.
When I say warranty issues, I mean in a sense that if you flash anything to your samsung then you've voided your warranty. If you customise on day 1, knox efuse are blown and it's impossible to revert what you have done. In this case your warranty is voided and samsung can refuse to honour any warranty issues irrelevant to your flashing. Basically you make changes to software on your device and later there is a hardware issue such as microphone not working - samsung don't have to honour that claim.
Flashing is a complete pain in the bum, to be honest. What makes it harder is these forums don't contain all of the information you need in once place. Compared to my previous devices such as HTC, you simply do a wipe and install the new rom. With the samsung you need to do the same PLUS find and flash the correct bootloader and modem. And this isn't even taking into consideration the knox trip issue. The roms aren't cross-compatible unless I've missed that bit of information? You technically can flash a g900F ROM to a g900i but to get it to boot you need to do additional steps. NFC and call recording wont work, though. So, no you can't really flash that way. Samsung may have made it easier for you guys in the USA, not sure.
I disagree about the bloatware statement, samsung have their own rubbish in there as well and most of it is redundant and not necessary. There's a samsung app store and a samsung account thing that lets you find your phone - google has all of that.
Lastly, when you trip knox this actually physically prevents some functionality on your phone, but I've never tried using that functionality anyway (although I did want to try it out). From memory this is a secure parition on the phone that you set up for your work, which is completely separate from the personal things on your phone which can be seen to make it more secure.

I wasn't trying to argue either. It's rather hard to express tone over text I've just never had any trouble with flashing stuff on a Samsung since the epic touch 4g. Htcs have that goofy bootloader unlock that has to be done via htcdev.com. The newest Samsung I'd be willing to use is the S5 anyways because of the removable battery, external storage and waterproofing. The s6 sucks and the s7 has that dumb encrypted storage that made root hard for a while. Samsung's are far from perfect, and I'd likely be looking at a OnePlus or a Huawei in the future if I was shopping for a phone, but for those looking at either the second hand market, refurbs or a new one available for stupid cheap, S5s are great phones still.

Fantastic, thanks. Just to be sure, I want to use the one click root APK the part at the top under the first description, correct? The second section, as far as I can tell, is for iroot via a PC?
Is Titanium compatible with this method of root? What about recovery? Does Vroot have its own method or could I use TWRP or SafeStrap? Have you had any complications with the modem or WiFi using your device with Vroot?

I said that I wasn't arguing for that very reason - I didn't want my second post to come across in a negative way. I could see that your post had come across in a good light and wanted to keep it that way
I am from UK but living in Australia at the moment. I last heard that Chris Evans has gone from the new Top Gear - thank F... for that, he's the biggest pleb going and watching the first couple of episodes were extremely painful and cringy. A number of things Chris said in the first show were somewhat not completely correct and I eventually switched it off.
Really looking forward to watching Clarkson and the gang - they're entertaining. Their top gear was more like a sit-com, which is what it's grown into and it works pretty well. Anyone in the family can watch it even if they know nothing about cars - I'll have to google for it because I don't know any details about their new show.
