Just updated, and the notes said that it allows side-loading from SD card. moved a few videos over to the same path on SD card as on device, restarted Milk VR, but it doesn't show them in the downloaded section. Anyone have any insight on this? I've searched, but I haven't been able to find just a "Milk VR" board anywhere.

Q: Can I test / side load my own 360 videos in MilkVR without a MilkVR account?
A: Yes, videos can also be side loaded without MilkVR accounts by creating a “MilkVR” folder in the root directory and placing mp4 files there. Files that are side loaded will show up automatically in the “Downloaded” folder and thumbnails for those videos will be generated when the app starts. The first time MilkVR sees your side loaded videos, it generates the thumbnails for them. If the mp4 file has “3dv” or “3dh” in the filename the MilkVR player will play the video as top bottom stereoscopic or side by side stereoscopic respectively. The MilkVR team would suggest using stereo sparingly as stereo effectively halves the resolution of your video.
Q: Does MilkVR support side loading from the Note 4 sdcard?
A: No, but we are adding support for it into MilkVRv1.29. Just put videos in a "MilkVR" folder in the root of the sdcard.
LOL, I must have been to milkvr.com a half a dozen times, and never saw that faq link. I'm not a content provider type, so I didn't register, and didn't think the page was for end users. THANKS Dave, for being kind and pointing out what should have been the blatantly obvious!
you are welcome. I think link was not very good positioned
I have a different problem. I subscribed to a page (virtualreal ... ) where you can download a json file and the movie. If i place it in phone memorys samsungvr folder, everything works. If i place the 2 files on sd card, i see a movie running if i look up, and a second if i look down. So it doesnt work.

Add _3dv to the end of the file name. Before the .mp4 of course.

That might work, although I suspect it won't work properly because MilkVR just isn't looking on the SD card for the JSON files. So this solution is like doing without the JSON file.
What definitely works, because I've tried it, is putting the JSON files in the usual Samsung.vrvideo folder on the phone and putting the video files on the SD card in the MilkVR folder.
You do have to edit the JSON files to change the path to the video to where it is on your SD card.
Yes, editing the JSON file (and moving it to the internal storage) is an actual solution, rather than masking the issue.
Thanks!
Hopefully in MilkVR v1.30, they will read the JSON file from the SD card, too.

Use a text editor, such as Notepad.
The JSON file needs to be edited for the new location of the video in the MilkVR folder on the external card.
"local_url": "file:////storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.samsung.vrvideo/files/..." should be changed to "local_url": "file:////storage/extSdCard/MilkVR/..."
The JSON file still needs to be in the Android/data/com.samsung.vrvideo/files/... folder on the Note 4.
Hopefully the next update of MilkVR will look in both places for the JSON file.

hm, well as milk vr is designed for 360 or 180 degree movies i think they will get weirdly streched but you can test it out:
copy your movie file into this folder: "\Phone\Android\data\com.samsung.vrvideo\files"
then add "3dv" to the filename for top/bottom stereoscopic movie format
check out the Milk VR Faq for more information concerning the appends to filenames
do not find any launcher for Milk VR

Just download nova launcher and add it as an activity (you can add any app from oculus you want that way). Not sure why it isn't showing up on the homescreen.
Just long press anywhere on the screen -> shortcuts -> activities -> scroll down to Milk VR. Then when you launch the app you just have to put it into the gear vr headset. :good:

Welcome to my poorly written How To!
So after downloading a video I went searching for the location and found it to be in Android->Data->com.samsung.vrvideo
In there is a number of jpg previews, the full videos you have downloaded, and .json files for them. Make sure you have downloaded at least one video so you have a .json file to edit for your video. Copy the .json file and open in a text editor. In there the fields to change are rather obvious. If anyone needs specific guidance, feel free to ask, but you should be able to figure out what is what. You'll see you an set the path of the video file. While I have not tested putting the video file on my SD card and pointing the .json there, it will likely work.
What I have done so far is put both the .json file and the .mp4 video file with the same name in that folder and it payed beautifully! I didn't update the preview image link so it shows a different preview, but it looks to be able to use a local or web link for that, so you can set that to anything you want in the .json file ^_^
This will work with not only work with local files, but any mp4 with a direct web link! It's all in the .json file.
When I have a chance I'm going to look into it further. I'm hoping there is a setting that can be set in the .json file that allows for 180 videos as well as defining if it's a top bottom or left right stereo video. If someone gets to this first and finds something, please post!
In case you are wondering why you would go to this trouble instead of just using the 360 video player, try Milk. It's far better with full controls for the video playback.
UPDATE:
Confirmed commands so far:
"metadata": {"stereoscopic_type": "left-right"} - For Left Right Stereo 360 videos
"metadata": {"stereoscopic_type": "top-bottom"} - For Top Bottm Stereo 360 videos

It's readily available in the Oculus Store for free as of today so there is no need. They have said on the Oculus forums that new apps are released every Tuesday, so I always check it first thing Tuesday mornings ^_^
Now we need Netflix and Youtube working with Gear VR
Sent from my SM-N910T using XDA Free mobile app
How about putting a youtube url in "video_url_stream":?? .....that ll make youtube somewhat available if it works..

So I'd highly appreciate if you could post a milk vr apk file so i can install it manually thank you

might be a silly question but what is the benefit of viewing 360 videos in Milk VR as opposed to the 360 video app?

Milk allows fast forwarding .... That's about it I think.
Posted this in the Oculus forums but I think it might help someone here as well.
If you want to move MilkVR content from internal storage to external SD (360 videos UI also makes it faster to pick content), it's pretty easy, you can do the same for the "experiences" (cant say for coldplay as that permacrashes on exynos) but you need to root to do those. Also this method allows to get all Jaunt content (there's quite a bit more), not just the beatle.
The same process also works for when MilkVR freezes during download and you get "waiting for other downloads to finish" infinitely.
1. get a decent file manager app, I grew fond of es3 manager
2. go into sdcard0 (device storage)
3. go into Android/data/com.samsung.vrvideo/files/
4. files prefixed temp_ are not fully downloaded files (delete those to fix the infinite queue bug)
5. if you open json files you can actually get the "real urls" for both download and streaming
6. copy over mp4/jpg to oculus/360videos/randomfolder then use the powervr tool to generate pvr thumbs if you want to have it superfancy
Obviously you can take this a step further and create a tasker task (again, root) to move them on command.
Felix and paul experiences are in the Oculus folder and can be copied into 360videos, then renamed to _RL for 3D, however you need to force audio into zarkana&strangers (videogo5 can do this without encoding). VRIntro has basic audio inside.
Jaunt content is in /data/data/ however they use a special method that puts top and bottom as images on right and I haven't gotten around to normalizing this in post. Maybe someone has any tips? This seems to be
Example for Hobbit "underwhelming experience of being on set VR" /data/data/com.jauntvr.preview.hobbit/app_jaunt/
Is there a way to exclude folders/files from Oculus Cinema under My Videos? Basically I just want to see the movies I've put under the /externalSD/Oculus/Movies folder but it seems to scan the whole drive including lots of video clips shot with my phone in the /externalSD/DCIM folder.
thanks!
I tried " .nomedia" file method and it worked. Side effect is that other players won't see those folders too.
Sent from my SM-N910T using XDA Free mobile app
yea that sort of works, but it has the drawback as you've mentioned. It also doesn't work for the subfolders under DCIM(i have a lot) if I just put a single ".nomedia" in it. it has be in every single folder that I want to exclude, kind of a hassle...
I know this is an old posting. However, when I updated to Android 7.0 on my S7Edge, nothing seems to exclude folders from being opened by Gear VR. I have tried:
.nomedia
.foldername
Any suggestions as I did a search on this forum and only found this tread.
Thanks!

Is it listed when you open Gear VR Service? You should be able to open it there. It will ask you to insert your device, if it installed properly, when you open it.

No need to root or install special ROM
1. install MillkVR App from link provided by Great Dr. Ketan
2. install "Gala launcher for Gear VR" from google playstore
3. open Gala launcher and from its menu select MilkVR from Apps
4. Enjoy Milk VR with original samsung ROM. No need to root or install third-party ROM
But why that launcher also requires?
After simple installation of milkvr apk it should appear with oculus vr menu.
Thanks!
Hi. Thanks for the apk. I managed to make it run with included videos but i failed running an mkv file in MilkVR folder as i only managed a mp4 to play. Is there a way to play 2D or 3D mkv files in DTS/AC3 with the gear vr ? I though milkvr was the solution but apparently not.

Yes you can I can watch any movies on my gear VR.
You need to make folder for me I put in External SD card set like this..
Oculus/Movies/3D
if you want to play normal movie just put the files on Movies folder..
if you want to watch 3d movies put it in 3D folder the file should be HSBS or side by side only.
I notice that photo apps on the GVR have access to all my pictures. This means I am unable to allow anyone else to experience the GVR as they will have access to pictures/videos/media that I would them rather not having the chance to peruse through!!
Is there any way to stop this access? Is it as simple as putting a nomedia file in the folders?
In general, I am concerned about the privacy implications of allowing other people to use your GVR. Is there any way to put a restricted/guest mode on it or restrict apps/permissions globally or individually for VR apps?
I would also like to hide/exclude some of my videos like the other .nomedia option provides. anyone can help?
After playing around I think I finally found the answer to this question. I moved all my VR videos into Oculus Folder on my phone or into a Download Folder on my SD Card. Only those two Folders will play when I use my Samsung VR. Try it and let me know your results.
