What the heck Is this? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This star appeared in my status bar overnight. I have not installed any new apps. Anyone else ever seen this?

Pretty sure you have volume set on priority only

After some searching around, found it.
It's a lollipop feature called "interruptions" which allows you to decide what app notifications can interrupt you. I had apparently set it to custom. I set the default back and the star disappeared.
By the way, when I say I haven't installed any apps, or I'm confident that it's not my apps, it's not an app.

That is the priority notifications only icon. See here. Check which one you have selected.

oh, i just tried that, and it put a star there. i didnt know that, thank you.

I still don't quite understand the feature, but at least the notification is gone

It's like an alarm feature. Only notifications from the people you've prioritised will show.

How it works......
You set days and times that you don't want something to happen, phone calls, texts, notifications. Example.... I have mine set for 7 days, 930p-630a, to only allow starred contacts to call or message me. If someone not starred messages or calls me, my phone will not ring, allowing me to watch movies, sleep, whatever, uninterrupted.
Sent from my Nexus 6

Do this;
Star the contact for your wife, parents, etc., and NOT your boss. Set downtime for nights and weekends. Now your work can't bother you at night or on weekend.

Line for Gear

Has anyone been successful using this app? It is the messaging app I use the most, but in its current state it appears quite useless. It claims it can be used for making calls and sending stickers, but the only option available is to turn the alarm off and on.
If you have figured out how to get this app working, please let me know.

It used to work! I love Line and you could reply with a sticker right from the Gear. But now it doesn´t work...
Alarm off or on refers to the alerts of the Line messages, but no...doesn´t work.
Every time theres an update for GM, I dont restore data from the last GM, this has solve my problems with line. or do a fresh install of line on your gear. you can also try to have notifications on when screen is off.

Ok. One more question. Do you have notifications turned on in gear manager for line, or do you let the line for gear app handle them?
Thanks
I finally figured it out after reading through reviews. You have to have pop up notifications turned on in the line app on your phone for the program on the gear to work properly. You can use either the "simple" or "default" setting. This pretty much just makes me not want to use the app.
Thats what I meant when I recommended to have notifications on when the screen is off. you have to play with the notifications settings on the phone. Ive also notice that sometimes notifications dont get send out to the gear when you have a screen lock. How do you like it now? its pretty cool huh, I just wish they included more stickers for the gear
The app requiring pop up notifications was a deal breaker for me. Half the reason I wanted the watch was so I didn't have to turn my screen on as often as I do. I also don't want people just seeing random pop ups. I deleted it in favor of the regular notifications until it gets better.

ROOT CALL BLOCKER not working for me

Guys
I really want to get this app working because it seems like a good one and meets my requirements. But it's either way too buggy or I just haven't set it up right
See attached screenshots in sequence
1) pic1 shows only a night list configured from 9:30pm - 7:30am where i want calls/texts to be rejected. I'm a light sleeper. Outside of these times, its supposed to revert to day list with no blocking configured at all
2) pic2 shows the status right now (11:25am) but somehow it's set to night list
3) pic3 - if I click on day list, this is the error I get. Why does the app think that at 11:25am, night list is the right one since it's clearly configured to be only at night 9:30pm-7:30am
Can someone help?
Thx
Anybody?
I can't help with the app as I have zero experience with it, but doesn't the native priority notification system do pretty much the same thing? I also haven't used it, so I could be wrong.
I am currently using a custom ROM, which I am not entirely sure has changed anything. But it has the option to block certain types of notifications (messages, calls, events and reminders), then has some sub options for them like allowing starred contacts to contact you still. You can also set times.
i went to sound & notiifcation and canot find any times. Can you tlel me where do i find that
thx

App permission monitor stating the obvious on SMS?

Has anyone seen this App permission monitor pop up while doing something completely normal and keep letting you know every time you use it? For me, I'm using Google Messages as my default SMS app, and this thing pops up telling me "1 apps have been detected using 1 permissions" and lists Messages | SMS.
OBVIOUSLY.
What's even stranger is that I went to app permissions and it says that Messages is authorized for SMS, just like I okay'd it when Messages was set as the default SMS app. What gives? I think this might come in handy when an app goes rogue, using permissions without me saying it was okay to do so, but in this case, it's like saying "water is wet." When you click on the notification, it says that Messages has been using permissions in the background.... What?
Any thoughts on how to okay this with App permission monitor so I can text without this warning all the time (and no, I'm not about to hide notifications of it since it could be helpful in the future).
Go into Settings > Lock Screen and Security > App Permissions Monitor and turn it off.

Not helpful. Please read what I wrote again. I think the app could possibly be useful, but it just needs to be corrected.
You can actually go in and tell it to not report permission uses for specific apps instead of turning it off completely. Instead of clicking the rifle just click on the words so permission monitor and it'll give the full list of apps and you can shut off reporting for apps you trust.

THANK YOU. This is what I was looking for. I didn't know what you were referring to at first, I was just getting the notification because I didn't see it in Settings (there is so much stuff in there now, you just about have to use the search feature for everything these days!), but now that I found it, I clicked on the words, not the toggle switch, and set Messages to NOT monitor. Perfect, thank you.
I am kind of confused. What did you search to make it go away? This is getting so annoying because it is always telling me textra is using SMS and I am not sure what to do to make it stop. Like you I would still like to keep the monitor on I just wish it would stop telling me what I already know.
Detailed Process

I was a little confused as well so this is what I did to correct it.
SETTINGS >> LOCK SCREEN AND SECURITY >> APP PERMISSION MONITOR
From there you should go down to the android Messages app and toggle it to off. That will disable giving the warning every time you send a message.
Hope that helps.

You do know they legit just told you how to do it.... you dont have to be mean about it. and then stating "THIS" is what im looking for. Like they told you how to get there, you click the name. if you went onto there to just hit the toggle without looking/investigating around, ie. pressing the section instead, then you arent probably getting the most out of your phones.
I suggest playing around in your settings and everything to get the most out of your phone.
I legit just made this account to tell you this because the person helped you and you seemed to speak rude to them.

This is happening on my note 8 as well. Have you been able to fix this? I'm a little worried it could be something malicious using back-end processes, like they programmed the exploit to send SMS messages without involving surface flinger...

I am assuming you are using a 3rd party messaging app from the play store?
I am still getting the notifications even though for instance Contacts is allowed to be used by Android Messages, I get the notification everytime I send or receive a text.
I tried turning the monitor off completely, still getting notifications.
All since I upgraded to a new Samsung patch last night on my S8+.
In fact I got the notification just now after I toggled the setting to off...I checked and the toggle is back on.

Can Not Thank You Enough! I could not figure out how to get that to stop to save me and my OCD couldn't take anymore of those notifications as it was always about my chosen text app. Turning off all didn't work why I didn't think to try just the one is beyond me. So thanks again and this is why I love this Forum!

OMG they messed up the alarm clock.

Just tried to set my alarm clock for the next two hours or so, noting. It keeps pushing for tomorrow's date and plus on top of that the toast message doesn't appear anymore saying " alarm set for 2.4 hours time" .
Major fail .

Works just fine for me. If your clock is 24h make sure you select the right time and not 12 hours out.
I set mine almost right out if the box and it worked as I would have expected. I did see the toast message as well when I set it

Maybe try to uninstall the Alarm app and reinstall it from Galaxy Apps. If that doesn't work maybe a force stop on the app in the settings?

Edit. The strangest thing, notifications for the clock app were all blocked.

My guess would be a Gremlin in the system, it happens on all mobiles. Either that or when you changed mobiles you used your old mobile to copy from or the cloud in which case sometimes things do go wrong.
I was told years ago to always start a fresh with each new mobile. I don't I use Samsung sync but there is ALWAYS some sort of minor **** up and its never perfect. :crying:
Like I wrote sometimes its just down to an odd behaviour...Gremlins as I call it.
I hope you got it sorted?

Alarm clock Xtreme free/paid

Ever since I got my Pixel 4 XL I've been having trouble with the alarm clock extreme free app staying on and waking me up when it's supposed to. The alarm gets killed in the background because of Android 10. I have every imaginable setting set for it supposedly to make sure it doesn't get killed in the background but everyday it never wakes me up because it never runs. Does anybody else have the app and have a solution for this because email support isn't helping right now. I use the app because it has a crescendo alarm that slowly wakes me up and I don't know of any other apps that have the same thing that are customizable like this app is. Otherwise I would probably switch to one that works. Hopefully some of you have the app and are using it successfully and can give me a solution to why it keeps shutting off when the phone is asleep. Thank you for your help in advance.
I used that app in the past but stopped after reports of its developer tracking users and other security concerns... but have you tried changing the app's battery optimization to "not optimized?" Changing to "not optimized" is my first go-to fix for anything that acts weird.
Changed everything that was related to battery or optimization but it's still not working. If there was another alarm app on the play store that had crescendo alarms I would change to that one. So far I don't see any like that though.

Timely has crescendo alarms, but I've noticed similar behavior as you're describing with yours. I just started using the stock clock app for mine until I find a different solution.
In case you haven't considered it -- Android 10 also introduced "adaptive battery" where you can add or remove apps under the "restricted apps" section.

That's one of the first things I checked. It wasn't restricted. If it was I could have blamed the alarms not going off on that lol.
got it. figured i'd try. it's the first thing I do nowadays when I do a fresh install... ie turn off battery optimization on important apps, like google voice and gmail.
alternate solution in case others haven't mentioned it... the stock android clock does have a 'gradually increase volume' option - but it's an app-wide option... not specific to each alarm. I use the stock clock and it works consistently... it's never missed an alarm.

I would definitely use the stock clock to ensure compatibility but it only goes up to 60 seconds for gradually raising the alarm. I need at least 5 minutes of gradual sound so I don't throw my phone across the room lol
