Phone shutsdown when Location enabled - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I'm running out of ideas and could use another opinion please:
N6 running 5.0.2 (this is the second one incidentally, I sent the first one back for this same problem) - the phone will shutdown under certain circumstances. When this happens it does not restart, you have to press the power button to restart it. Mostly this happens when I use the Google Camera stock application to take a photo but only ever when the phone is not connected to WiFi. I have had it happen when I open the camera app as well (without taking a picture), if you put your ear to the upper speaker as soon as the camera app is opened you can here a cell location signal (similar to the sound you hear when you put your phone near a speaker) and then the phone turns off. I can stop this happening by using a third party camera app. I can also stop this happening if I disable Google location.
Yesterday I wiped the phone, signed in with my Gmail, and took 25 pictures, all OK. I then turned on Google Now, took one photo and the phone turned off. This is definitely something to do with location data but I don't understand why nobody else is experiencing this ? Maybe the phone is faulty but I'm going to have a hard to explaining that as I sent the last one back for the same reason.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Simon.

Glad I'm not the only one having this issue. I've seen this happen on my N6 too, both on 5.0.x as well as on 5.1. I've seen this happen even while unlocking the phone (I have face unlock enabled), and yes this happens mostly when using the camera. Never knew it has to do something with location services.
I'm running completely stock and unrooted by the way. I guess I should try flashing the factory image

Yes same with me, stock phone unrooted and although using the camera is the best way to get this to happen you are right, it sometimes happens at other times as well. If I go to an area with no WiFi and poor phone signal I can get it to happen everytime the Google Camera app is opened, so I have to resort to taking pictures in Airplane mode.
This has happened to me since I have had this phone and its replacement and I am curious to know why, when you open the Google camera app, if you immediately put your ear to the upper speaker it becomes active for about 3 seconds ? After that three second burst of sound the phone will turn off. To me, it sounds like a location signal is being sent when the camera is opened.

Yet turning off geolocation?

same thing happening here,i was out today and when i tried to open the camera app phone kept crashing, soon as i was home on wifi camera app worked fine,i've switched off the location thing to see if that helps

[Q] Unknown App Flashing When Toggling Wifi

Last night I was at home and noticed my wifi wasn't on, so I used the quick settings in the shade to toggle it. After a few seconds, wifi connected, and some unknown app took focus and closed repeatedly. After a few moments, it stopped and all was well.
I thought it was strange, so I turned wifi back off and the same thing happened. I rebooted, tried again, and got the same result. I was trying to think of a way to see what was happening, so I tried using the Screen Record function in Gravity Box, which didn't help much, because it happens so fast, and no info is displayed, just a black window that goes away quickly.
I then turned on the CPU usage in Developer Options to see if anything consistently came to the top when toggling. I saw a few apps each time Plume (Twitter), and Maildroid (email) were two of them. Both of these apps behave differently on wifi and 3G/4G (push vs. pull), so thought -maybe- it could be something with that. I uninstalled both of those, rebooted and tried again, getting the same result.
I recorded the screen when this was happening with the CPU usage displayed, and was wondering if anyone has any ideas? I don't really want to uninstall and reinstall EVERY app on my phone, so I was hoping someone may have seen this before or see something I'm missing when watching it happen.

Thanks for any input anyone can offer!
Do you check virus from your phone ?
I am also having this, seems to be due to 4.4.2 OTA, which I continue to delay as I am rooted.
Mine doens't only happen with wifi change, but also just randomly when using hangouts, keyboard stays out but hangouts min -> maxes quickly. I have tried freezing the update apps but it apparently didn't do anything as I was still asked to update earlier.
Only hangouts? I have that app disabled.in the app settings.
I can't say for sure that being on 4.4.2 fixed it, but I am on 4.4.2 now and it is not happening anymore.
I unlocked my bootloader and did the 4.4.2 SBF, unlocked and rooted. I installed probably 99% of the same apps (only ditched 1-2 that I never used anymore) and I am not having the flashing issue anymore.
Hard to tell for certain if the pending OTA was the cause, but it may have been.

Disconnected...

OK say I have paired it with a Sony Xperia Z1 compact.
As soon as the screen turns off it loses connection with the phone. It still thinks it's connected (there is no cloud with a line through it on the watch face screen) and when you say ok google it tries to interpret but then I get the screen that says
disconnected and to the right is a little icon of a cloud with a line through it and underneath there are options for built-in functions like "show my steps", show me my heart rate" , etc
If I manually disconnect and reconnect using the Android Wear app on the phone it works again straight away.
Anyone else seeing this behaviour?
I had that problem right at the start. Can't remember how I fixed it
Restart both devices? Uninstall and reinstall wear app on phone? Update to latest watch firmware?

Hey that could be it. I do have stamina enabled because the battery in my phone is going down rapidly with the watch connected. I'll turn stamina off and see what happens. Cheers!
EDIT: I think this might be fixed now after turning off stamina mode. I'll need to test furtehr thugh. Thanks skitty
I'm still getting this quite a bit. Is anyone else still experiencing random bluetooth disconnects? It still thinks that they're connected until I try to do a google now search and then it tells me they're disconnected. I tried uninstalling the wear app on the phone and reinstalling. I also cycled bluetooth and that seems to fix it in the short term. Suggestions?

I'm pretty sure, for me, the answer was to disable stamina mode on my xperia phone. I very very rarely see the disconnected message any more.
Cycling BT also used to help for me but all that was doing was temporarily foxing the stamina setting. It always switched itself off again.
I'm having the same issues, here's my post in the general android wear help forum
"So I've searched around a bit and not really found anyone else having this issue... Is it just me or is no one complaining?
The Bluetooth connection shows to be solid on the phone "connected, running sync loop" shows in the notification bar and the little connection lost cloud is not displayed on the watch.
However, notifications will not push and if I try to initiate a voice command it spins for while and then tells me that it is "unable to reach the Google server" turning Bluetooth on and then back off will rectify the issue temporarily. And... To make things more complicated it will randomly happen a lot one day and hardly at all another day ( of course it always acts up when someone starts asking questions about the watch and wants a demo, which in turn makes you look like a gullable early adopting fool.)
I'm currently using a gear live with a nexus 5 running the latest stable build of cm11. Ive also tested with and without WiFi enabled, because I thought I noticed a correlation but there seems to be none.
Is it me? Am I doing something wrong?"
I have also tried running stock faces vs custom with no change
hasn't happened since 9:00 this morning.. today... yesterday I missed almost every notification
disconnect
Not sure if this is related or if anyone can give advice but for me (HTC one max) whenever my Samsung gear live is disconnected from phone...phone randomly restarts all by itself. Tried factory reset, was fine until I set it up again. Made sure android wear was off...just tried turning off Google now see if that helps.... Anyone else experiencing the restarts? Sorry on phone so messy post...
Woah sorry i forgot about this post. My issue was the stock kernal for cm11. When i switched to another kernal, my issue vanished.
I am having the issue where if my phone is asleep I cant do any searches. Now I know or at least I'm pretty sure that its not the watch or the app but something on the phone. Phone is a galaxy note 3 sprint version running temasek's unofficial cm12 rom. The watch is stock of course. When I get a notification the watch will happily wake up and tell me about it, but when I try to tell the watch a command with the phone sleeping is where the problem presents itself. The issue appeared after a few of the rom updates (happens even with a clean install) and I know he's a busy guy (temasek) but I would like to see if anyone here could help me figure it out to be able to provide a solution to others that are having my same issue. Any and all help is appreciated.

5.0 doesn't work well

So, I successfully clear the cache, I even clear the storage data with Google service and play store etc, and the phone runs smoothly for a while.
Until some app are updated, the whole phone goes crazy again, especially my camera. If I launch the moto camera (not any other camera app) and turn it off. All my app in background would be shut down, such as bluelight filter, every time! I have to reboot my phone, to make it turn back to normal, but at certain point, the phone would go crazy again with that camera issue!
I guess it is the problem with the incompatibility of 5.0, and in fact some apps do! I uninstalled a lot of them, but the issue goes on. This is my second week with my brand new moto x, but everything so far make me love my first moto x deeper!
Anyone can help?

Check out this thread where we are discussing this issue. Seems to happen on KitKat too, and it seems to be a Motorola Camera issue. Download the Google Camera and use that in the meantime.

Thank you!
if I remember correctly, I have no problem with 4.4.4. The camera issue is that something stopped the twist launch first, than I have to launch it manually, but soon the camera shut down by itself, and all my apps crashed, and relaunch.

[Bugcollection] Which bugs did you encounter in Lollipop?

Hey guys,
I am using my Moto X (XT1052) for almost 2 years now. It is/was the best android phone I've had so far. It was smooth, had no hangs and just did what it was supposed to do. Since I received the Update to 5.1 I keep on having real strange issues and it really bothers me because it really renders the phone useless at times. And since I couldnt find another thread with all bugs collected in one place, I am going to start my own thread.
So which bugs did I find so far?
1.Youtube and other video services don't work all the time
(They work sometimes, but the the video stops, tries to resume and ends up in a loop trying to load the video. Often only a reboot helps.)
2. Battery consumption in general has become way worse (cell-standby)
3. Random "Optimizing apps" after a reboot
4. No Active Display with handsover (I know this isn't a feature anymore, but to me this is a bug as well)
5. Missing energy widget
6. Wifi range has reduced significantly and seems to be buggy at times (can't always tell if it's my router or the phone, but mostly it's the phone)
7. Sometimes the phone uses mobile data instead of wifi, even if connected
8. Vibration mode (important notifications only) doesnt always end properly and the phone doesn't start vibrating again after the set time or alarm
I think that's it for now. But this clearly is enough for me.
So please Moto guys do something! If you need logcats or anything else, let me know and I ll help out as good as I can. I was one of those who patiently waited for an update instead of crying for one, because I wanted a stable one rather than a fast and unstable one. So either fix it, or I ll have to return my Moto X. The phone in its' current state is useless for me. Especially as I can't even downgrade without having to risk a full brick. So please do something and push an update to either allow downgrading, or fix the existing bugs!

I miss this very badly
"No Active Display with handsover"
Now I have to tap or take my phone to see notifications... :crying:
I switched over to CM and all is going great of course at a small cost of losing Moto voice feature but I can most certainly live without it. I've got very decent battery life of 5-6hours of screen time over a span of 13hours. No over heating issues and usually cell standby sits at 2% usage which is absolutely fine for me.. Even the hand wave gesture works with active display. I'm so happy with how stable it is with CM. Living with a bug free phone for now.

Random Crashes followed by optimization boot
I have been getting random crashes that lead to the phone shutting off. When I turn it back on, it takes FOREVER to optimize 92 apps. I don't have even 30 apps on the phone!
I did a factory reset and still have this problem. It's happening every couple of days. It's making my experience with this phone very frustrating!
Some more issues I've found:
Soundproblem, sometimes when I switch e.g. from twitch to spotify and then try to increase or decrease the volume, I get a crackling sound every time I push the button. Sometimes it disappears after a certain time of not playing anything, but mostly again only a reboot helps.
The phone unlocks itself more often in my pockets for no obvious reason.
The unlock on the ActiveDisplay unlockscreen often only leads to the normal unlocking screen instead of the homescreen. Same thing when I try to open notifications. Mostly those apps run, but I get to see the normal lockscreen, instead of the app with the notification.

I think I found a fix for the YouTube problem.
Press the power button and keep it pressed till you feel another vibrate ie. After the power menu pops up.
That seems to solve it

Well that's not exactly what I would call a fix it appears to work sometimes though. I also noticed that simply changing the video quality from let's say 720p to 480p often resolves the issues. I mostly get the video bug, when I am trying to watch things in 720p or above. Maybe it is a codec problem? A broken lib?

For YouTube, you could get another app. I stopped the cell standby issue by turning off carrier internet when not needed. Install greenify, servicely, battery saver, and power nap. 1 I too have random optimizing of apps. 2 pocket dials have increased, 3 if I tap on the phone icon from messaging app to make call to that person, I have to exit out of the SMS app before I see the call screen. 4 sometimes when I'm multi tasking I go back to another app but the app reloads and doesn't take me to where I was. 5 Google now voice only responds 30% of the time when i say hello google. Some other problems I have noticed but can't think of right now

Good thing I waited for a version that I could go back to kit kat because it didn't update the bootloader to lollipop. This is the thread if anyone is interested. I flashed this rom for xt1053 on my Rogers xt 1058, with only speaker phone not working away from WiFi for some reason, but that's if you flash on another moto x besides xt1053. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3155843
1. Battery drain (cell standby) makes the phone unusable.
2. WiFi does not connect or only works rarely now.
- download two times on whatsapp
- dialler doesnt dial a call

Cell Standby Battery drain is the worst..
Randomly restarting and optimizing apps has been a huge problem as well.
I miss the wave to wake for active notifications...
But what I really hate about 5.1, is that when using wifi my mobile radio keeps active all the time...
This drains the battery while being on wifi...
Funny enough, when I'm on mobile data, everything is ok and mobile radio is active only when needed by the apps...
On wifi on the other hand, oh man... it's active all the time...

Strange behavior from Nexus 6 Display

My N6 is running Android 7.0, have not had problems until a couple of days ago.
The right half of my display started scrolling while, the left side of the display was normal. I powered it off and back on a couple of times and, the issue was still there; I panicked and did a factory reset from the "Settings" menu hoping that would solve the problem, it did not; I still had a jacked up display.
Is this a failure mode that anyone else has seen?
I powered the phone off and, turned it back on with the volume control button pressed and, it booted into safe mode(?) then, I toggled the mode to "Restart" and, upon restart, my display was normal. This was not the end as, it will occasionally be split screen when I unlock it. I have discovered that sometimes if I receive or make a call the display will return to normal, if not, I just power cycle it into the safe-recovery mode (but not do anything else) then toggle to restart and, it's all good until next time.
Is it possible that another device (blue-tooth) in close proximity could cause my phone display to act up?

So weird, but same thing has been happening to me the past few days. But I have a justified cause. It started immediately after installing Franco Kernel.

It is a known hardware issue in some N6 phones, some have it and it only shows up on certain rom / kernel combos, even stock. One thing that helps is to use the interactive kernel governor and/or the down sampling factor. Of course you will need a kernel manager app for that.

That's good to know.
I inserted the Bluetooth question because, coincidentally or not this issue presented when I acquired a wristwatch ($19.00 from China) that connected to my phone via Bluetooth, It had it's own fitness app which I installed (which did not work). To me, there seems to be more "connection" than expected as, the fault thing only seems to happen when the watch was powered on (but not even connected via Bluetooth). If there was a bug caused by the companion app, that should have been taken care of by the factory reset.
I'm going to do some "scientific testing" by, not powering on the watch for a week and see if the issue reoccurs. Meanwhile, I will read up on kernel manager apps.
I've since flashed stock pn, and now elementalx. It's not acted up yet. Seemes to be a better performance kernel. We'll see how battery is. Sorry to hijack your thread!

Well, so much for "scientific testing" and wishful thinking.....didn't take long to eliminate the wristwatch, now to fix the problem.
