I got the Nexus 6 about a week ago. Same day I got it, I did the trick to upgrade it to 5.1 (remove SIM, check for updates). Just kinda noticed now that I never see any LED blinking for notifications. It does do the low power black screen heartbeat though. Any clue why no lights?

flash a custom kernel. I believe Lean, vindicator and elementalX have led notifications for sure. I think the others do too. Cant remember.
Lightflow is needed on the stock rom to make the led work.

The custom kernels allow LED for charging but not for notifications.
Use Light Flow app or a custom ROM that has native LED built in.

It does and it works very well. I set super user to disable it's notification of granting access though. Didn't need to see that, just the light.
Don't you need the paid Light flow app for notifications?

Yes you do.
I'm not quite sure what the actual requirements are for native notification lights (lightflow is an ugly hack that I personally would not use), but it certainly is neither a custom kernel NOR a full custom system image. I *think* that a custom built lights HAL may suffice, or it may also require a custom built Settings application. I.e., under Settings --> Sound & notification, it is missing the option to enable/disable "Pulse notification light".
So wait, are notification light not used in stock Nexus? Is that because they replaced it with the heartbeat?

Yes, no notification LED on stock. Was supposedly replaced at the last minute with ambient display.

More a matter of the just disabled it for fun. Nexus 9 does NOT have ambient display (presumably because it is not amoled), and also has its led disabled.

LightFlow... no root needed

I wanted to use Tasker to disable the charging led at night. But can't seem to figure it out. LightFlow works, but obviously doesn't have the automation flexibility of Tasker.

Try Charging LED, it may work.
Optionally, you can define all batery level colour to pure red (#ffff0000), this is by far the less bright colour and you will no longer be annoyed by the led at night.
yeah i really hate that blinking ..i treid lightflow but that didnt worked at all ...

Lightflow seemed to crash my phone every few days. I'd get a notification and boom - the phone screen would no longer turn on. I'd have to do a red-button reset to reboot the phone.

I tried Light Flow but it doesn't work even when I set it up as direct. Does anyone have any luck with any other apps for LED control?
Light Flow works perfectly for me. Did you make sure to enable Notification access and Accessibility service?

I forgot to enable it in Accessibility. That did the trick for the most part. It won't overwrite the system LEDs when the screen is on and not locked. So for something like receiving a call it will never work and for something like on the charger it will switch back and forth between the system color and light flow color. Nevertheless, thank you very much.
If your phone is rooted you could try XLED it dose what your looking for

I haven't rooted yet given the issues with unlocking the bootloader at the moment. I'm sitting tight waiting for better ways to root as the phone becomes more available worldwide. Light flow does the trick for now but I'll be sure to check out XLED when I finally get root. Thanks though.
Hi Guys
When a notifications arrives and ambient display is enabled it is showed in the display but it only "blinks" like 3 times. Is there a way to keep it blinking until notifications are dismissed without rooting?
The problem with how it works now is that if it has been for example 1 hours since the notification arrival you can't see that there is something waiting for your attention without garbing the phone. I miss that from my Nexus 5.

I would like to see this as well, but I am assuming it will have to be built into a custom rom. I am using Light Flow Pro to light up the LED for now.

Hello,
First of all im new to this scene so dont hate me for my lack of knowledge. Currently im running Cynaogenmod 12 on my Nexus 6.
In Stock of this CM the LED Notificatio Light is enabled. But this LED isnt blinking, just shining all time. Is there any way to fix that issue?
P.S.: Today I want to change to Chroma ROM and Vindicator Kernel. Anyone who knows if this issue is solved in another Custom Rom?
Best Greetings,
Barely_Alive
The LED doesn't blink natively, it has to be done via software.
There is a post in the general section where people were using LightFlow and perhaps using Tasker to accomplish this, I think there is a custom ROM that claims to have a blinking LED. My guess would be either way could potentially be a little buggy, in that it won't work all the time and/or probably wouldn't be too friendly on the battery, as your device has to stay awake for the software to tell it to blink.

Right, but there is some settings that can make it blink, I think they combined it with Tasker. There is a thread in general that was quite popular where they talked about it.
Edit: This one or perhaps this one talk about how to do it with light flow (and whatever else they use). This is the custom ROM that includes it
Great! Thank you for your help

MeanPop has a blinking LED for notifications if you don't mind a stock base.
Hi!
As i wrote, the screen just turning on without doing nothing.
I'm not touching...Only move it within my palms and the screen turnes on.
Anyone heard about that?
Your help would be appreciated.
Thank you!
It's called ambient display. Makes your screen turn on when the phone is moved after your screen turns off.
Basicly a replacement for the lack of a led light(talking non rooted non custom rom here)
OR.. it could also be an app, thats turning your screen on. there are many apps that do this, you should read your apps permissions.
Just turned off ambient display.
But...does it mean that now I wont get any notifications during phone at sleep?
Tnx!
Ambient display doesn't use much extra battery, it only illuminates the pixels its displaying and it keep the phone in a low power state.
It is your phone's stock visual notification system, so yes if you turn it off you won't get any visual notifications. If your phone is set to vibrate or make notification noises it will still do that. The phone does have an LED behind the speaker, so if you are rooted you can install something like lightflow to use your phone's LED for notifications instead/as well.

I don't use light flow, but I have heard of many having issues using that app. what I use is s ROM that allows for colored notifications, then I set my colors within the ROMs options. BTW, pure nexus ROM.

oh snap, I just realized this is the same guy who was posting in the lightflow tutorial thread and was told how to do it multiple times.
He does not have "run all commands as root" check in the settings, and insist its not an option. He just needs to go through the settings and enable that like the popup window when you first launch light flow tells you.
You gotta look through your settings man. I don't know what else to tell you, I don't use that app anymore but I have. And unless you go through all the options in the settings menu... The app isn't going to be able to write to the kernels file system to turn the light on.
Maybe I'll just flash the pure nexus ROM.
I just dont get how to use this App.
Tnx!
I don't want to sound mean but if you Cant figure an app out I don't think you should be flashing ROMs

He said in another thread that he bought it... but that doesn't matter. I don't and I used it via the options I stated to have LED notification for basic stuff.
I have a question regarding ambient display. I know how it works and all that stuff, however, how many time the phone wakes up with the black/white screen? Because mine gets a notification, it shows it to me then without doing nothing it shows the notification again and again, every minute I guess for a long time. Is this normal?
Yes thats normal. Just like a notification LED will stay on, Ambient Display will show every now and again until you acknowledge the notification in case you missed it. Again, it uses almost no battery to do this, I have used the phone with it on and with it off and never really notice a difference.

Reinstalled and after i gave the SU permission - I chose the following:
'Root mode' is on.
'Run every command as root' is on.
Let's see if it would work now.
Thanks!
