30fps Video Record?

Is there a way or tweak to get the camera to record at VGA or WVGA @ 30fps? I have a 14 month old daughter and im constantly taking pics of her for the familly ect and noticed that when recording video the framerate is very laggy or slow motion like. The iphone 3gs records great video quality and the N1 has better specs so id assume higher frame rate on record is possible with the N1 also.
Any thoughts anyone?

People trip me out some time with there smart remarks.
If you like carrying around multi devices good for you. I have a stand alone camera that does video record ect but my camera is not ALLWAYS on me.
The same way the Nexus is good for multi media such as mp3 / and watching videos but I dont go buy a PSP or ipod touch for that I use my phone. The point of the high end phones these days is to try to limit carrying multi devices on you at all time.
With all the hacking / ports / tweaks going on just wanted to know if 30fps video record was possible. If you dont know how or dont know what im talking about please do reply with BS. Thanks.

i don't think he was in a bs kinda tone. hard to tell on forums
you'll thank yourself later for using a higher quality camera (dedicated camera) of any kind for videos one day. proud parent here, know whatcha mean about wanting to capture the cool 'new' moments.
now then, as far as recording, i'll bet there are settings you can change for it someday. right now the video quality is pretty darn good. just dumped a couple of videos from mine today. frame rate is quite good, picture clarity good, fps decent.
IF YOU FIND an app or way to up the settings, PLEASE update this thread in your original post.

Yeah, Im not trying to come off negative to anyone. I have a decent standalone camera that can take great pics and video a 10mpiexel cam with ful vga record. With phones tho its so MUCH MUCH MUCH more conveient to beable to snap a picture and have that picture allready able to send as MMS / Email / Up Load to facebook ect...
With the standalone camera I have to take mem card out - load to card reader - copy pics to mem card on my nexus - ect...
Just too many steps. When I had an iphone 3gs for a lmited time I was amazed at the video recording quality from a cell phone.
Now with the nexus with specs better then iphone I dont see why we cant get full 30fps at WVGA or VGA res. With 1ghz CPU and 5mpxl that should be possible right out the box. Seems like its definetly possible and im all for the ability to carry less devices.

it would be great if we could get 30 fps on the nexus. my under powered n97 does 30 fps and its video quality is a step up from my nexus for sure. kinda disappoints me that the video quality isn't just as good as my previous phones.

the moto droid (with lower specs) can do 30fps with some hacking... im sure its some setting in the rom that we can change

HTC Desire with similar hardware does 30fps.
I don't know if it's HW or SW limitation, though. Did anyone try to record video on Desire ROM and can verify the actual fps?

Well, the Desire ROM allows for WGVA recording. I do not know about all the fps stuff, but I do know that I am recording in WGVA.

You should be able to by modifying the camera driver in the kernel and the build.prop. I'll look into this when I have the time, but I found the line that should control frame rate. A commit says that not all cameras are stable at 30fps, but how's that ever stopped us?

Hey guys, been watching a few videos on the Nexus 4 now and one thing that has really impressed me so far is the video recording, and more specifically the microphone when recording.

Just thought I'd shove this video here, im sure some of you have seen it already but is it just me or is the microphone really clear?
Im currently using the iPhone 4s and the microphone isn't as good as this. The video is a little shaky but I'm sure if mounted on a tri-pod (with an adapter of course) it should work fine.

The sensor IS capable of 30fps (even more). Software isn't taking full advantage of the sensor. Maybe on a more recent build the problem is already fixed, but no one on more recent builds posted an unedited video

I take my Atrix 2 as a benchmark, and since it's a phone from end-2011, for progress' sake, the N4 should beat it hands down.

Image-wise, the N4 looks good. Remember that youtube videos are often compressed badly and stutter on their own. It is sharp and there's plenty of details, judging from the op's second link, but the framerate is poor. My Atrix2's recording frame rate is always 30 fps, and image quality is just a tad worse.
So may I ask google, is it that difficult to do, with top-notch hardware, what motorola did 1 year ago with now-outdated chips?

Nope, It reinterprets higher framerates into 30frames, unless the slowmotion effect is going to be employed, in which case it keeps the extra frames. What looks to be the problem is the recording refresh rate. The output of the codec file is always going to be a standard (24/30 in NTSC, 25 in PAL), whether or not there are actual frames there, is determined by the refresh rate.
My point is that youtube isn't going to reinterpret the video and change the framerate.

What is wrong with the FPS?

No, it doesn't.
You can go on about the price, but you'll still be wrong, since other devices at a lot of pricing ranges are able to maintain 30fps video recording.
And since not everyone is able to buy from the Google Market (there's a thing called "rest of the world"), and price outside is REALLY higher, you'll be double wrong.
As said a lot around, seems to be a software bug, making the camera module basically "take a lot of photos" instead of "making a video". The camera itself IS able to do [email protected] and [email protected] The S4 processor and 2GB of RAM are more than capable of dealing with the support necessary.
Google/LG are likely to NOT fix it, but I hope someday the community here manages to.

Is it recorded in 1080p? If so I think it will look smooth in 720p.

Bet you lots of money that it's fixed on launch day - producing 30FPS videos like a champ. NO ONE SEEMS TO HAVE A FINAL VERSION OF THE SOFTWARE. And judging by the performance increase within the last few days on at least one N4 device, I'm going take an educated guess and say that Google are releasing software updates once every 2 or 3 days before the launch and my honest opinion is that Google are impairing things on purpose so that no one from the company runs off with a device and chucks it on eBay for quad profit.

Well, I'm putting a few chips here. I sincerely hope you win, but I think the chances are abysmal that they care about such "secondary" stuff. They fixed the S4, I saw that benchmark. But no one commented about a camera fix.

[Q] Video - Slow Motion quality

Question guys - to enable you to slow certain scenes in a video you need to select the slow motion video scene...fair enough.
Should this in turn reduce the quality of the video?
I could be wrong, but before I went to a custom ROM, I am fairly sure the video quality remained the same as normal. Now as soon as I record in slow motion, it reduces the quality.

I noticed that too with mine. Horrible isn't it? You also get reduced quality with 60fps. You get verticals lines. I gave up and stuck to 30fps.

I also have this problem vertical line appear in indoor environment. However, customer service told me this will be fix in next update.

Slow Motion = Low Resolution
I saw that HTC video doing a slow motion video of a man doing fire/flame stunt. Actually I was amazed and got excited that I wanted to try that Slow motion on my own with something else like a sprinkler maybe.
So I found one at a park and as soon as I started shooting the video (slow motion video under video settings) WTH!!!! The resolution dropped to something like 768x432 and its a bite pixellated, not true HD (1080p) which I thought I'd expect just like from the HTC video... Yes you can trim/edit the video that's cool but I was hoping for 1080p HD quality
I hoped HTC would come with an update that can maximize its camera features up to 1080p resolution. oh well..

Well I guess is impossible because the Snapdragon 600 doesn't support the record of 1080p videos at 120fps :\

I'm on stock 4.2.2 and I've recorded this slow motion clip a week ago (don't forget to turn on HD when viewing it). The quality seems fine to me.

Yeah. The quality is awfull. The slow motion video from the the device with the man in the night eith fire from his mouth is years ahead bettrr than the ones we can record... But why HTC ?!

hello guys. i'm sorry for this little derailing question but it was the only thread i found:
i'm currently digging into slo-mo available in latest phones.
i just saw some HTC ONE samples and i was very disappointed from the low resolution.
i was particularly impressed with the new Iphone 5S 120 FPS real 720P feature. it really looks 720 and not upscaled like the fake 720p NOTE 3 slo-mo. however i cannot use iphone anymore due to the small screen.
so from this thread i gather the faster frame limitation is by the processor itself? (snapdragon 600-800? what's the 720P limit?)
i am willing to wait until an Android phone will have a usable 720 slo-mo..
so what hardware could provide this? as i can see nowdays, the latest android phones cannot do it (not the NOTE 3 or the G2 which doesn't even have slo-mo to begin with).
my choice now are either wait for a phone that will (maybe the next HTC?), or wait till apple make a bigger phone (cannot stand the small screen).
your thoughts on this?

Anyone getting rolling bars when recording in slow motion low light?

I'm getting some seriously nasty bars during slow motion recording (I attached a screen shot which isn't as bad but when it's a video the bars move all around and are very distracting) Anyone seeing the same thing or am I looking at a defective phone? I already swapped out phones yesterday due to a stuck pixel, but best buy has been very easy about it thus far. Just wanting to see if this is hardware or software, thanks!

Yep, exactly the same here. Gets worse the more the sensor gain ramps up.

Checked the sprint store demo and a best buy demo, All the same. Must be a low light issue. Oh well, Guess most of the time the feature will be used in the daylight (although this may be a bad thing when trying to slow mo some epic beer pong matches)

Figures, seems like it would be a hardware issue, but maybe there will be some magic firmware update that will help.

Most serious hd cameras require a lot of light, so this should be no surprise when recording show motion videos. Just be sure to have adequate lighting in the future

I haven't looked closely at the example yet otherwise I would have put my 2 cents in earlier.
I work a lot with cameras and know them very well. One thing to keep in mind is cmos sensors don't expose every pixel at the same time. This causes what is known as the jello effect when you move quickly left and right. This can also cause what is known as rolling shutter. I believe this is caused by the shutter speed in combination with the way cmos sensors work. When I get back from this weekend trip, I'll see what is going on.
At work I have a professional Sony video camera with a backlit cmos sensor. If I drop the shutter speed down too low to help when it's too dark, especially around fluorescent lights, I get brown bars rolling across the image. It's just a physical limitation of the sensor no matter the camera. Some hide it better than others. I hope this helps clear this up.

This is nothing like traditional noise caused by high sensor gain in low light. We're talking dense horizontal lines only in slow motion recording, which I'm guessing is 120fps? 60 fps mode works fine. I've seen examples of slow motion video recorded by the euro version in low light that didn't have this problem.

That doesn't eliminate it as a cause. The example you saw could have been in better lighting conditions than you thought, or the euro edition might have had older firmware that didn't let the ISO go as high (thus, the whole image would appear much darker, but less noise).
120fps slow motion means the camera has to use at least 120th of a second for a shutter speed. This is relatively fast for a smartphone camera, so it has to bump up the ISO to compensate. If the light is especially low, it will have to move all the way to the upper bounds of its ISO capability to get a usable image. Meanwhile, a 60fps video will have MUCH more time (2x is a lot of time) to grab light, and so it doesn't need to force the ISO so high.
It's extremely unlikely that a firmware update will solve this issue. All they could do is just force the camera not to use that high ISO setting, resulting in slow motion videos that are too dark instead of too noisy.
(Also, BTW, this has nothing to do with the jello effect)

How do you do slow motion video recording? When I have the video camera on, there aren't any menu options available.

Thanks for adding. I hadn't had a chance to even look at the example posted but felt like it should be addressed by someone. I'm out in the middle of nowhere right now, video streaming isn't always going to work well here.

The euro demo was in CONSIDERABLY worse lighting, without question. I don't have time to look for it now, but it's on Youtube.

The Euro version just got an official update regarding several problems. It also included a low light slomotion video upgrade

I'm getting a stuck blue pixel when taking photos in low light... is anyone else experiencing this? The blue pixel is showing up in the actual photo taken, so I'm assuming it's a problem with the sensor.
Daylight photos aren't exhibiting this behavior.

Video quality

Your friends are never going to believe what you did. The only way to prove it to them is with that video you took. Rate this thread to express how videos shot on the LG V20 come out. A higher rating indicates that videos are smooth (and not choppy) and that auto-focus works very well, and that the camera adjusts quickly to different lighting conditions while recording.

Wow, talk about impressive.

Well, the shadow definitely confirms there's a phone on his head. That's seriously amazing to even consider doing that and it does look really good.

I see the wide lens and what he's doing (aside from the views) being amazing, but that quality is horrible. ?

It's shooting at 120 fps! So the shutter speed is incredibly fast and you will need A LOT of light. This is standard with any slow-mo recording. You can try bumping up the ISO but the reality is, you will most likely be doing slow-mo only when you have sufficient light with a sensor this small.

None on my phone. Can you provide a time stamp which u see the artifact?

I took the V20 out to my son's baseball game today. Wasn't all that impressed. Maybe because I'm a noob, and have to learn about using the camera and video functions and capabilities of the device. My V20 was set at FHD 60, or aka, 1080/60fps. I was posted near 1st base. When you launch the camera, it goes to auto mode. When action would occur, I would hit the video button, and it would start recording. The footage came out very bright. It was a sunny day today with occasional cloud cover.
I won't compare this too my Note 4, or my Hero4 Black that I have been always using at the baseball games. I may have left the "AE-L" feature enabled, or I should have just been in manual video mode to begin with. I will pay attention to the settings next outing, and hopefully it's just user error the first time around!

Question - in auto mode it has the possibility of doing 60 frames per second on video. If I go to manual video mode and make it do it's auto thing it dumps down the frames mostly to 50 fps and to make it go up you need more light and then it goes up, first it begins to push down iso until 50 then it will start effecting the FPS number. Why is that - why would it go down to 50 fps and not just down to 60 fps?

Apparently it now goes to 60 frames by standard - no idea what why it changed and how - it correctly do 1/60 now and not 1/50 - maybe it was the update.
