[Q] Battery life mobile vs stationary

Hi,
I was searching but couldn't find anything with regards to my issue. I've had my Galaxy s I9000M for a bit over a week and have noticed that the battery level, even while doing nothing, will decrease more when I am moving vs when I am stationary. The phone IS rooted, unlocked and I also have applied the OCLF 2.0. I have disabled GPS as well as the 'Use wireless networks' but they seem to have done nothing in regards to prolonging battery life. My guess is that it has something to do either with some kind of location tracking that I have overlooked or the built-in accelerometer. If anyone has any idea what it might be that drains my battery while I am mobile vs stationary, please advise.

I think it got something to do with live wallpaper. I had same problem, before i go to work its 100%. I hardly use it at work cos got a work phone. 8 hours later and its down to 60%. Im on jm8 with digital wall paid live wallpaper.

Varying signal strength could also cause that, as the cell radio will use more power when in weaker signal areas.

I don't think that would apply to my case though, since I am still using the default wallpaper that came with it, but that is definitely something that i will have to keep in mind. Thanks for that.

I have not even considered that, but I suppose that could be a possibility. I'm wondering if there is anything that I could do that could prolong the battery life if what you suggested would actually be the cause.
Anyone else have any possible ideas or suggestions?

MSM_HSIC_HOST Kernel Wakelock

Hi,
Anybody else have excessive MSM_HSIC_HOST Kernel Wakelock. My phone doesn't have bad battery life, I think I pretty much optimised it in terms of applications installed, but there is always this one Kernel Wakelock at the top of the list.
This morning, my phone has been unplugged for 1hr 27mins and I already have near 10mins of this wakelock. My phone has had it's screen off since being unplugged. Wifi is on and bluetooth is on. I have received one email via gmail app. My Partial Wakelocks is fine/expected.
I have been in the same location (home). I read this is the modem and thought this wakes to check mobile cell connectivity once in a while and should also be reduced if WiFi is on and connected to internet so all data goes via that and not the modem. I read there was an issue with this wakelock a while ago but never got to the bottom of any solution.
Does the attach look normal and as expected, it would help for those with great battery life to state what they have for this wakelock.

I wouldn't panic over that. Just look. It only existed for like 9minutes. It's pretty much normal.

It was in the N4 and franco managed to get a fix in his kernel so you may need a custom kernel to get it to go lower. It seems to be a qualcomm wakelock. Not 100% sure.

Umm. Well I had this wakelock this morning, unplugged for 30mins, no screen on, no emails, no text, 12 mins of this wakelock, my batt down by 2% already.
Strange thing is yday, I had this wake lock for about 40mins for the whole day yday, so I not sure what's causing it, nothings changed.
Anyway taking mine back tomorrow for an exchange as originally for the Gaps but decided I'll live with that but my 3G issue is causing me concern considering most people getting great reception.

i just checked my BBS: 5m52s (count: 287) of msm_hsic_host wakelock @ 3 hours since unplugged.
Seems like a normal value to me. Since we early adopters always have to do some debugging for the companies, i'd just blame it on the early rom-version and wait for the next 2 or 3 updates from HTC. Or some stable custom rom.

MSM_HSIC_HOST wakelock is data. If you have a problem with MSM_HSIC_HOST wakelock, something is keeping the phone awake and using a lot of data. Look for other sources to figure out the cause.

I have WiFi on, so everything should go via that. The only thing I can think off that is causing this is the Vodafone Sure Signal at home, I've hardly used my phone and it's lost 6% already in the space of less than 2hrs, with 30mins of this wakelock. However when I'm out away from home this wakelock goes back to normal.
Anybody has Vodafone sure signal and can confirm this?

I have about 3000 plus wakelocks on that daily..I've been searching everywhere but no solution. Really wish this gets fixed the battery is still good but I know it can be better if this gets fixed

Yes, I have this as well, it is actually more than 2.5 hours in my 14 hours usage today, and 2400+ wake locks, I also learned from Google that this is caused by 3g modern looking for signal of 3g connection, but I had 3g off the whole day... But my signal was not very good at home, Maybe that's the reason...?

Me to on at&t I've searched and tried minor fixes nothing helps from what I've gathered supposedly 4.2.2 helps this but until I see it I'll consider it hearsay

Sgs4 die users are also complaining and they are already on 4.2.2
Btw I am seeing a lot of other wakelocks which also start with msm_

Since this wakelock is connected to data service, wouldnt an auto data disabling app fix this till a kernel is cooked to disable it completely?

Hey,
I am also having massive wakelocks from msm_hsic_host and main too, it's gotten worse after the latest update by HTC, I have the unlocked 32GB edition and I am using it abroad at the moment. Any solutions for this, short of having to install a custom kernel and/or ROM?

I've experiencing these same wakelocks since a couple of days. Sometime a reboot fixes it for some time but it's really annoying. So far researching. This has led me nowhere. Did any of you find a fix for this. And are you on stock or custom. ROM?

Especially bad low signal battery life

My house has terrible reception in general (T-Mobile!), but I've never had a phone drain THIS quickly due to searching for signal.
I've set it to 2G only (I only get EDGE at my house anyway, THANKS OBAMA) and it seems to be helping.
Is the Nexus 5 or Kit Kat in general aggressive with searching for 3G/4G signal in anyone else's experience?
Like I said, other phones haven't had this issue.

I have terrible signal too and standby time is horrible. I'll try using faux kernel and report back.

I have same setup as you except my network settings are set to LTE even though there is no lte in my area. Not saying i have great battery life, but it isnt 49% looking for signal.

I have this SAME problem, and the signal on my phone is terrible compared to my last LTE phone.

same problem at work...... I dont know how 1 place can go from lte to 4g to edge all with in a small building with 1 floor. First day while being at school i got 3 hours screentime on lte, today at work i got like 1.5 hours.

27% over 12 hours with one bar seems just fine to me..

Mine reacts different with st att. I get 1 bar of lte in my home when I force lte. If I do auto switch gsm/lte it opts to 3 to 4 bars of hspa, which of course I prefer at home on Wi-Fi.
I've used tmobile for most of my smart phone life and always used tasker to switch to edge when connected to Wi-Fi. Saved a lot of battery. So your experience has been what I normally get.

I have T-mobile as well and my house is in a bad spot. I found that with my note 2 I could use the dialer debug codes to manually set the phone to what ever freq and service I wanted. I found this to greatly help my battery as the modems for T-mo are particularly bad at determining the correct type of service to use and needlessly killing battery.

Are you guys using wifi while at home? If not then you really should. It generally makes the data modem go into a lower power state if wifi is connected saving battery. Thats how it is on my VZW galaxy nexus.

I have full data bars in my area. If I turn WiFi off and just use data the battery drains significantly faster.

I am new to T-Mobile, I was with Verizon and my house on Verizon barely gets LTE. My galaxy nexus never got LTE but with T-Mobile my Nexus 5 has 3-4 bars of LTE. So I've been using LTE lately and my battery life has been great. I get 5 + hours screen on time with LTE.
Of course Verizon says my area has great 4g service too but anybody who has came to my house either gets 1 bar of LTE or 3g on Verizon. Trying to acquire a signal will of course eat battery though but I will tell you what I am very happy with T-Mobile so far, a lot better then I expected.
I am happy with the battery life and signal strength where I live and travel to.

I noticed this issue today as well... hoping for a solution...

Like I said, manually switching to 2G-only when you're in the affected area removes the problem, but you'll need to switch it back to LTE when you go anywhere with a better connection time. Settings > More > Mobile Networks > Network Mode.

If you're worried about battery life. There's a few things you can do. I found that turning off my "Ok Google" hot word detection increased battery life immensely. Also try turning off Google Now sometimes. I realize that the highlight of this phone more or less was Google Now, but if you don't need it for a certain period of time, turn it off. Doesn't hurt to try.
Try out Faux kernel also. On his test 7 (I think he just put out test 8) I was on track to get 60 hours of standby time. I'll try and dig up the screenshot..hopefully I didn't loose it one of my many wipes..

Do you mean Franco? Faux kernel is only on 002 beta 2, Franco's is on test build 8.

I had this problem and I sent my phone back and got a new one. The new phone doesn't do it at all just got a day and a half with over 4 hours screen time. I think some of the nexus 5's are a bit dodgy.

Yes. Sorry, I had flashed both kernels and decided on Franco for now because it seems he's had the most progress so far. He also received his own device today so he should be able to get even more things done!

+1. It looks like my N5 gets 5-8 dBm worse signal than my N4.

Cell Standby causing insane battery drain

I have been using my N6 for the past couple of days and the battery life has been quite disappointing for me so far. It seems the biggest culprit for me is the poor signal in my area leading to a huge amount of drain from Cell Standby. Even when idle, my battery drains quickly. I lose 1% every few minutes without even turning my screen on and about 10% over an hour. As of now, my device has been on for 2h 49m and 24% of that time has been without signal.
I understand that poor reception is causing the radio to constantly look for a signal but my Moto G and Nexus 5 are in the exact same environment and fair much better when it comes to battery life. Anyone else experiencing this insane battery drain? At this point I'm debating sending the device back, getting a refund, and dealing with the bloated and Touchwiz filled Note 4. It's a bummer because I absolutely love this phone otherwise. The screen, build quality, WiFi signal strength, and audio experience make this phone an absolute delight but the battery drain might be a deal breaker for me. Thankfully I still have a couple of weeks to make up my mind on whether or not I'll be keeping the phone or returning it and going for another phablet. Thanks to the N6, I can no longer return to a phone with small display.
As I mentioned earlier, I am not having this issue with my Moto G or Nexus 5 and both devices have excellent idle battery life.

I have noticed the same thing with my device. Might not be to the extent you are experiencing because the cell coverage is a little better but cell standby is one of the main causes of my battery draining.

This seems to be an issue with Lollipop and people with the Nexus 5 are also experiencing this. There is a thread over at /r/android discussing this issue.
I absolutely love this phone and I will be holding out for a patch as long as I can. This phone is so awesome though.

I don't have this issue with my new N6 or my N5 on lollipop. I have very strong signal though in my area.
I would like to point out though it's not that bad considering your without service for over 20% of the time at that point.. From that it looks like you'll have a12 hour day.

Yes, my N5 running LRX21O has the same since I activated my N6. In my case (Wi-Fi only) I can just turn off the mobile radios.

I actually already started a thread about this. At first I thought it was a sprint issue turns out to be widespread.

This cell standby drain reminds me of eclair and froyo days. I believe the temp solution for this was to briefly put it into airplane mode. Then turn mobile network bank on. It would sort of reset the existing bug. Anyone remember this from way back when?

I remember it well I had the Eris. But I think it's different today. I think it's a reporting issue not a signal loss issue. Imo

Ahh... memories, I had the eris as well. Actually 5 of them, ha ha. Man android has come along way.

Just a thought.. try changing it from LTE preferred to 3G. I'm not saying to use this as a permanent solution but just try it out. I was in the -90 to -103dB range in signal on LTE and it would randomly crap out entirely for a few seconds every couple minutes (at best). I have no idea why - didn't have that issue on my older galaxy S3. Anyway, switching to 3G suddenly gave me fantastic reception (at least in terms of signal strength).
If it helps you - that might be the cause of your battery drain: poor signal.

I just did 12 hours in a hospital where my S3 couldn't make it much past lunchtime. I'm at around 15 hours now and have 70% left. Full time on 4G.

Did this too which helped a ton.
Also flashing the latest modem in fastboot also appeared to help.

Like others have mentioned, forcing it to a specific network mode will typically save power, especially when you kill something as power hungry as LTE.
From the regular system menu, you only have the options to set "preferred" LTE/3G/2G, but this does not actually disable LTE or 2G when you select 3G.
From the dialer, enter *#*#4636#*#*, select phone information, scroll down to "set preferred network type" and choose "WCDMA only". With this, it will actually turn off the LTE and GSM radios.

BGR are a bunch or turds, they are iCrap homers and are the absolutely the worst. BGR is a great example of what is wrong with journalism and yahoo today, 2-3 paragraph hit jobs without any research. They just scan xda forums or other news sites for the most popular "problem" threads and then write an anti-android article almost instantly.
With that being said and considering the source, no this is not a possible battery fix .
Apologies for going off, but if you couldn't tell, I really hate BGR and yahoo.

5.1.1 is our only hope. I'm crossing my fingers it fixes the memory leak AND cell standby so I can get a wireless charger and have a 100% battery in the morning.

I thought there was a cell standby "fix" already? With VoLTE off and WiFi calling (which is tarded in itself unless you live in an area with bad reception) off, it doesn't even show up on my battery list.

Well that's not a fix its a workaround (I hate VoLTE anyway). I have both off but when I'm in a building with poor to no reception it eats my battery worse than any phone I have ever had. Plus there's no way (I think) the memory leak is causing my battery to drop like it is when it's doing absolutely nothing. I don't have any apps like facebook to cause it either. People on reddit who have taken the 5.1.1 edge leak say the difference in battery life is biblical so we will see if that helps me when we get it.

Hmm. Since I've moved to the Edge (since my first S6 was defective) I'd love to see the improvement. I went from getting 9-10%/hour drain with very little use on my S6 to about 3% with moderate use on the Edge. I'm at 8 hours on battery and 1hr 15 of SOT and I'm still at 75% battery life. For stock, that's pretty good IMO.

Settings/applications/phone/voice over LTE settings (this really deserves a swipe down quick button)

I keep hearing across all of the Galaxy S6 threads how the 5.1.1 update will fix battery and voLTE and Wifi calling issues... I hope it does. My question is when is the predicted date when Tmobile pushes it out to us?
I have had my S6 for a little less than a week, and it's completely stock. Rooting (in any of the multiple ways) seems to have issues with deep sleep, but easy work arounds. I plan on keeping it stock for as long as I can stand, but if Tmobile isn't planning to push the 5.1.1 out in the next 2 months, I will root. Plus, the opportunity would be present to clear out some bloatware

On your homescreen, click Phone app(dialer) > more > Settings > Voice over LTE settings - Do not use VoLTE

Android pay... even though they already did that with wallet the new security features sound nice. Plus it looks like aosp will support fingerprints on M! If we ever see aosp M on this phone I might give it a shot (if the camera isn't crap).
