Hi
I bought my P7 a couple of weeks ago and updated it to B609 (4.4.2 EMUI 3.0). I have tried to install AdAway and AdFree multiple times but they don't manage to change the hosts file or block any ads. I've tried changing the permissions using Root Explorer but it has been unsuccessful. I rooted using RootGenius and I have SuperSU (for some reason it has failed to update the binary today, haven't figured it out yet). I haven't installed CWM or any customs ROMs yet.
I'm not sure what the problem is since AdFree worked perfectly from the start on my last phone with 4.0.4.
Please help me.
Thanks!

read the thread of how to root ascend p7 http://forum.xda-developers.com/ascend-p7/general/rooted-p7-l10-609-t3003605 ...you have to remove a file (set_immutable.list) in order to have a 100% root...if you don't remove this file you can't edit /system partition (and of course change host file)

Instead of deleting set_immutable.list, you can edit it and comment (with #) /system/etc line.
Before editing, you will have to use "chattr -i set_immutable.list" to remove immutable flag.
After editing you can put the flag back "chattr +i set_immutable.list".
Maybe you will have to remove immutable flag from the /system/etc/hosts file as well.
Hosts file should have immutable flag turned off.
First operation is of course rooting the phone.
Thanks guys.
I managed to fix it by flashing the device again, removing the .list file and installing Busybox.

Im a medical student and I really would love to be able to use the newly available Android Medscape app (free from the market) on my phone.
Unfortunately, it says in description of the app that it may have problems with "rooted" phones. Im assuming it means our HD2's running android on NAND as well, because after installing the App on my phone, I am unable to update/download the Clinical reference data required for the app to work offline.
It gives the error "Internet connectivity was interrupted..Please try again"
Any help from the developers or anyone else would be very greatly appreciated

Looking at the description and the error you gave, have you tried disabling any ad-blocking software? It may be something cooked into the ROM - if so, try asking the dev how to disable it. DLing now - i'll post back what I find.
.............................
EDIT:
Ok, having found this question asked on the thread for the ROM I use, you can remove medscape from the adblock 'hosts' list. (find it in \system\etc).
Original Post URL: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11521445&highlight=block#post11521445
I had to copy the file to PC before editing and copied back again using droidexplorer.

Thanks for the reply. I forgot to mention the ROM im using. Its Core Droid DHD 1.5, and it seems you may be right. It says in the description of the ROM that the "Adds are Blocked (Host files modified)". Is there any way to reverse this host file change?
Fixed it with the help of the developer of the Core Droid ROM. Just opened the app "Add free" and hit "revert". Restored the original host file. Medscape works now.
im having the same issue and clicking the "revert" bottom on AdFree did not fix it
I have uninstalled AdFree and have the same problem all the time. Anybody fixed this?
i had the same problem!
After i revert the hosts file in ad-free, medscape did not update the reference!
So what i did:
I did not unistall ad-free, but:
- i revert the host file 3 times in a row;
- i stopped the access of AD Free from SuperUser (root access);
- and i restart medscape (i killed the process with automatic task killer) and start it again;
- and voila, my htc g1 is updating the reference while i text.
(i don't know what are the steps that make medscape update, but i guess, is the revert host file and restart the app, to it starts didn't knowing that can't access that host to update)
I hope this help you!
Good luck
It works for me, reverted host files, stopped Adfree acces to Superuser and voila!! Medscape is updating again. Thanx
how to correct medscape installation please?thx\
SOLVED!
Just got an OTA update for my flyer and software got updated to version 2.27.1540.32
The android version is 2.2.4 while sense is 1.0
Just for the record, AdFree only works on ROOTED devices. i mentioned in another thread on xda that adfree does not work for me. with this OTA update, my Medscape is finally installing as i type this - - -
Just kill the AdFree app and immediately run Medscape app,it'll definitely take the update.I did the same and it worked
i try looking for file in \system\etc
in use editor to open file host.. thera are a lot of files,
and it make me confuse, where the file "medscape from the adblock 'hosts' list" is ???

Hi everyone!
Well, I've experienced the same "connectivity error" as everyone with a root cellphone, after reinstalling medscape app at my cell. I never had AdFree, and even though I'm able to found the hosts file and take a look of it with my pc it says absolutely nothing about medscape (only 127.0.0.1 localhost and emptyness after), so I guess I must be getting the wrong file or not accesing to it correctly?
I've tried everything you said, but is still not working.
I'm pretty new with android, and I would really aprecciate you help, given the fact that this is one of my favorities app!

Iam on CM 7.2 LG p500.I had same probs and ur method really worked like a charm.I thought I almost lost it but thanks to you.BTW I renamed hosts file as explorer
i'v rooted my phone, now trying to activate stagefright..i used blade buddy, but didn't seem to do the trick. i've tried writing in true with several different apps but it telling me can not write file : /sytem/ built.prop. cannot someone help??
Using blade buddy did you do a menu > save?
Sent from my Zio using XDA Premium App
yeah, but when i go back to the system folder build.prop it still says false.
Use Root Explorer or whatever file manager you use with R/W access and then manually edit the build.prop and reboot.
i've used antek file explorer and es file explorer and a couple other ones, but neither let it r/w. could it be because of the busybox version i'm using??
how do i know which version of busybox i need to be using. i'm still using the stock rom. havent flashed to openzio rom yet..afraid to brick my phone, being a noob and all lol.
Busybox is part of superuser permissions or root. Download the Busy Box Installer from Mr. Steine Ericcson(prolly messed up his name spelling). I'm using the latest "unstable" version with no problems. Busybox version isn't going to matter for R/W access. Are you sure you're rooted? You can't get R/W access without root.
i'm rooted using Z4root...using busybox installer from the market, v1.19. ive re-rooted to make sure i am. is there another way to root this phone??
i checked root access and it says "alternate su binary location: /sbin/su: permission denied". does that have something to do with it??
Yeah that may have something to do with it. I wrote the below before I saw the permission denied.
Sounds rooted to me. You need to get a file manager with R/W access. Then get it on R/W and manually edit the file. Everything I've ever used that changed stagefright was a shaky app at best. As more time goes by, manually editing it thru whatever means is always the best choice. Apps take up space and really don't save that much time. This includes any other settings you want to play with. Editing yourself and rebooting is always the most assured way of success.
This post belonged in the Stagefright Thread Stickied to the top of the forum, by the way. And if you would have read the Stagefright thread you would have seen everything I'm telling you now, there. Just for future reference. There was no reason for this thread.
I would unroot with z4 and try Universal Androot or Super One Click.
so i guess root explorer is the only way to go..cause the other apps ive used seem to have r/w properties but still dont work. well thanks for the help, i'll have to buy root explorer i guess..by the way, where to i find the busy box installer you mentioned??
i'm really new to this..sorry for wasting a thread. thanks for all the help anyway
Anything that has R/W access should work. If the R/W isn't working your root is messed up. So I would suggest unrooting it and rerooting it again with something else or even trying again. Let me see what Mattix or someone says about your error.
sweet..thanks. if nothing else, i'll just re-root with universal androot or super one-click. the phone seems to running pretty good, but when i play angry birds, it lags really bad..to the point that its almost unplayable. i get between 720-740 when i benchmark with Antutu.
so i re-rooted with universal androot, and still not getting permission to edit system files, namely stagefright. it either says you do not have permission to edit file..or cannot write system file build.prop what am i doing wrong or do i need something else to do this?? i'm using antek file explorer, could that be the problem??
Just install the latest OpenZio ROM release -- I have defaulted stagefright to "off" to address an issue with certain ringtones not showing up in tone selection.
My Droid 3 is rooted and I received the OTA notification. It downloads fine, reboots the phone, and begins to update. About 1/3 the way to update, the Android turns into an Exclamation point and reboots. Once back to home screen I get an Update Failed error.
Here is what I did so far:
-Defrosted all apps then rebooted
-Restored all system apps with Pete's One Click Root
-Pulled Battery for 5 min
-Factory Reset Phone
After each of these steps I tried to install the update and same thing. Will not get past 1/3. Any suggestions?
u need to rsd the swu.zip in order to get the update
OK, where can I get the swu.zip?

lacesout, had the same experience. Used one-click method to root, then used psouza4's bloat script to remove, then restore apps when the update became available. These were my only mods. Went to /system/app and all app's are back with the proper apk extension. Update downloads fine, then hangs at 1/4 to 1/3 of install. Anyone else with similar experience or thoughts as to what's hanging the OTA install?
If you used the script to re-bloat the system, use root explorer and double check all the ".bak"s were removed. I don't remember which one, but I remember there was a file or two the script skipped over.
Also, if you did a nandroid before debloating, you can restore it, then go get the update. (The second option is what worked for me).

Thanks for the reply and the tip on root explorer, it's an elegant tool, more intuitive to use than the freeware apps.
All the file extensions in /system/app are either .apk or .odex with the exception of Fota.apk.bak, and Fota.odex.bak. As the first time I heard of nandroid was your post, I unfortunately didn't use it, so I don't know if these were the extensions before I used psouza's bloat removal script. Fota was not on the list of scripts to remove/rename in his original post.
As Fota is the "firmware over the air" app, it is suspicious that it's the only one with a .bak ext. I am using root explorer to rename both, removing the .bak, and then will attempt another update.
Success! "Your phone has been upgraded to 5.6.890.en US version". Have lost root, at least for the moment. Will deal with that tomorrow. Last thing to do before going to bed is find the "Thanks" button. Thanks for setting me on the right path. P.
Unable to root after OTA to .890
One click root not longer works. After clicking "run_to_root_your_droid3.sh" on PC (Ubuntu 10.04) I get no prompts on screen, but phone does reboot twice. No su privileges after boot. Busybox is installed in /system/xbin and there is nothing I can do about it as I can't mount r/w. Using Root Explorer and Script Manager as tools.
I realize I'm going to have to increase my learning curve here. Would appreciate any links to relative threads on this topic, or suggestions on what to try next (I have searched, but need some direction).
Hello.
I connect to phone using adb shell. Is there anyway to edit hosts file?
I would like manually add some line (from adaway source).
The bootloader is locked, phone is not rooted and I don't want to root it.
So is there anyway to mount /system as rw and edit the hosts file?
Thanks in advance !
No, the host file is system integrated and not writable as normal user, even with adb.
You need to be rooted or use an AdBlock App from PlayStore.
Ok, thanks.

There were some forum thread, were was explain how to remove system apps via abd, without rooting the device. Can you help me find it?
I think you mean this: https://www.xda-developers.com/uninstall-carrier-oem-bloatware-without-root-access/
It was somewhere in huawei forum.
I can't remember P or Mate series.
I think that could work.
btw
Can uninstalled apps be restored?
Yes it was also in the Huawei form, but it used the same approach. I believe the 'removed' apps can be restored by a factory reset.
First of all, I found this guide under the S7 Edge section on XDA. I tried it and it worked on my rooted A70, so I wanted to share it here.
There are two methods. One of them needs root access, and the other doesn't. I didn't try the one which doesnt need root access.
METHOD 1 (NEEDS ROOT)
1- Install a file explorer which can access and edit system folders.
2-Find build.prop and copy it.
3-Paste it to your main storage.
4-Open it with a text editor and go to the end of the lines.
5-You will see a line which says "ro.config.tima=1". Turn it into "ro.config.tima=0".
6-Save and copy new edited build.prop.
7-Paste it to it's original place and overwrite it.
8-Reboot your phone and check Samsung Health.
Rootless method is not working but if you want to test it, test it:
METHOD 2 (DOESN'T NEED ROOT)
I DIDN'T TRY THIS AND I AM NOT SURE IF IT WORKS
1-Uninstall the Samsung Health App.
2-Install Samsung Health version 4 https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/samsung-electronics-co-ltd/s-health/s-health-4-5-1-0011-release/s-health-4-5-1-0011-android-apk-download/
3-Launch the app and follow the steps to complete setup.
4-Update it via Google Play.
Thanks to @CuBz90

Thanks for testing, I wasn't already giving it chance. I will note that it is not working.
How did you edit the /system? I am having trouble mounting it with read write privileges. My phone is rooted. Unable to "adb root" or mount system r/w. My multiple file explorer apps have had root access granted by magisk but I am still not able to replace it. I tried deleting it to see if I would be able to. I was able to but unable to paste the updated build.prop back into system. Had to reflash ??

I think you're having trouble with pasting (overwriting) the edited build.prop.
I am using FX File Manager with root addon. You can try it. And, do NOT forget to give read/write acces to fx. To do so, when you open /system section you will see a lock icon on somewhere (top right) as I remember. Click it and give permission. Then paste the edited build.prop onto the original one.
Write here if you have any other problem.

It’s very strange - my old Lenovo tablet, A3300 a firmware ResurectionRemix, Android 7, calmly sees and sets Samsung health from the playmarket. WADW? (What am I doing wrong?):смех:
