Google Keyboard Material Dark Bug - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone seen the Google Keyboard using the Material Dark theme, white out the borders like so?

Only when using a CM theme. Do you have one applied?

I have had this happen multiple times running stock 5.1 rooted (LMY47D). Its been happening once a day or so for the past week.

This is on the stock VZW 5.1 ROM. I'm rooted and the the only thing I've touched is the build.prop to tether.

I've had this issue, it comes and goes. I've experienced it on stock rom, rooted rom & a custom rom. It's definitely a Google keyboard bug.

Have you tried going into Settings>apps>all>Google keyboard and uninstalling updates? This might isolate if it is truly a bug.

I know that I haven't. I like Google keyboard b/c of it's simplicity.

This won't uninstall the keyboard, just the latest update. I use the material light theme and haven't encountered this at all.

I am aware that it won't uninstall the keyboard, I like dark theme though.

change menus from White on Black to Black on White?

Many of the default Android menus are white text on a black background. Not only do I find these visually unappealing, they are actually counter productive given how poorly dark themes read in sunlight.
Can these be changed to black text on a white background (or light background) instead? Does anyone have a theme they can share to accomplish this? Thank you.
OK, I guess this is not possible. It's a shame because I find Android's list based menus awfully plain and unaesthetic. White text on a black background with little visual art...it really looks like a plain vanilla terminal of yesteryear. While I love Android's openness, customization, and tweaker-friendly platform, it really needs a major overhaul in terms of looks and user friendliness. In short, the GUI needs some polish and consistency.
It would appear that Android has built-in "themes" for apps to use. If none is specified, then the dark or black theme is used. I wonder if there is a way to force apps to use the "light" theme even if specified otherwise. Perhaps a custom ROM could be created to always use the light theme.

i know this thread is old enogh, but i'm searching for a answer to this question too.
Same here, I´m looking for a solution to this problem
For me is near impossible to read white letters on black background, and i have a new ZTE Blade that can´t use because this
If someone have a solution, please !!!
Thanks!
Recently this has been bugging me as well. I wish there was a very simple way to perhaps tweak the framework and systemui so that black on white can become a reality...
This is totally feasible. You would have to do a bunch of XML edits in your framework-res.apk and declare everything correctly.

Changing the theme style in styles.xml should work I guess... if I have little to do I can take a look

Okay, I've done it, just gotta see if I've caused any bugs and write a how to
Edit: Bah, it's hard, the whole system and lots of apps are based on how it is now, changing it causes lots of trouble. Don't know if I'll make it :/
Btw, I did it in my cm7 theme. You can see it in my signature

AWESOME. There are some issues though, such as black text on dark backgrounds in the music app, which I'm guessing would take more than some xml editing to fix. But other than that it's GREAT!

Thanks I have fixed most of these issues I think, but one of the issues was kind of tricky, cause when I fix them, I create others :/ and I don't have the stock music app installed atm, I will install it and see the issue myeself

I don't see that theme anymore in your signature. Would it be possible for you to share it? I'm still in search of a way to get Android to be a bit lighter (outside of going with MIUI), which I find far more visually appealing.

Dark messenger app?

Back in the day, I used to run CyanogenMod on all my devices and they always had the stock SMS/messenger application with an option to use a "dark" theme. Right now I'm rooted on stock 5.1 and I'm looking for the stock "Messenger" apk with... a dark theme.
Thanks!
This might be what youre looking for here

here it is. Scroll down, download link is in the first post. Works great here. However you have to use titanium backup or similar app to remove the messaging app (system app) before installing this one.
Use textra
8sms. If your used to the way cyamogenmod was, this is for you, pop up dialogs and all

What I am looking for is the Google Messenger but just black backgrounds in conversations instead of white... but keeping the other colors unchanged.
I think I found what I'm looking for with Textra I guess.
This is stock messenger. TBO version

Can't say that I've experienced this at all.
It has happened to me a few times. We'll probably have to wait for a Google Keyboard update.

I use the dark keyboard, and have *never* seen this.
I've used the Dark Material on GKB, never saw this at all when I ran it on my GNex with ROM's, and on my currently acquired N6 from VZ.
Custom ROM or stock image?
Are you running any mods on the phone at all?

Dialer keypad color issue with MM OTA?

Installed OTA yesterday. Anyone else not able to change dialer keypad from the mental hospital white? I would prefer a dark dialer keypad, which was available in Sense 6. The only option under personalize is default (white). Initially the same was true with the keyboard, but after changing themes in the new theme settings, I got other options for the keyboard that were part of those themes. Still only default for dialer keypad, and no theme change would change it either, so regardless of theme chosen I still only get white.
I looked around the forums and saw that some had the same problem with sense 7 ROMs running on M8 and M9. There was a workaround by uninstalling the dialer app, and then updating it or simply reverting back to sense 6 dialer, but I've no option to do that under the app (just force stop, no uninstall).
Kind of at a dead end in figuring it out. Don't care for the bloat of 3rd party dialer/phone/messaging apps, but might have to try one. I'm not into rooting or mods on my main communication device, and so this phone has never been anything but stock (except for apps available in the store, naturally). I did have Apex launcher as my app launcher at the time of OTA, but that should not have thrown a wrench into the update (at least I don't think it should have). My next step is to factory reset to see if that resolves it...which I'm not eager to do.
Any thoughts?
Use the themes app and download a new keyboard theme.
Not all themes come with keyboard recolouring...

Thanks for the reply. I tried that. None of the themes had any affect on the dialer keypad -- still just white --, even the ones that showed in the preview to do so. The keyboard was changeable with via applying themes.
Hmmmm, if it is a Sense 7 based Sense 6 ROM , it won't work, AFAIK the only official Sense 7 ROM is Stock Rooted, soon will also have Bad Boyz 4.0.
Try the stock rooted, then report back please!
I'm not running a ROM, I'm newly OTA updated with Marshmallow, so I'm stoock Sense 7. I guess I'm wondering if what I described (only white phone dialer keypad) is normal behavior for Sense 7. Like I said, I can't change the color of the phone dialer keypad from white, either in settings or themes. If this is correct behavior for stock sense 7, that's OK, and I'll explore other options by way of a phone app.
Again, thanks.
It doesn't seem like normal behavior, I'm on Stock rooted MM...that is literally just changing the theme for me.

Got it to work. Don't know what the problem is. Some themes that show a change to the dialer in the preview do change it when applied, some do not. Now to find a way to edit the theme and retain the change to the dialer.
Thanks for the help.
Same problem same solution. I've only got one theme that was actually able to change the dialer colour to black "darkside" but I hate everything else about it. Could you suggest any other

Hello.
I have a rooted Nexus 6p and I installed today Subtratum Theme Engine with the theme of Deity.
Because I do not like (dark text, sometimes illegible on dark background), I uninstalled it. It unfortunately remains the dark background in all applications (settings, wattsapp, contacts, messages, etc ...).
How can I restore the original settings?
Thank you.

You will get way way way way more help in the Substratum thread where the devs and many themers hang out.
This thread was asking for Substratum compatible ROMs
edit - you need the TBO theme compatible apps to solve the white on white issue with GMail and other Google apps that have hardcoded colors..

There is a fix to this. Go to accessibility settings and turn on high contrast text. Everything would be read able. I reverted to stock ui because the text looked awful, readable but awful.
Substratum works fine with Pure Nexus.
