Trying to make Touchwiz look as close as possible to stock android - Galaxy Note 4 General

I really hate touchwiz, samsung made some really welcome changes with the new version of touchwiz found on the s6, they could still tone it down more, but it's an improvement nevertheless, the notification bar still looks awful for example (I can't wait for someone to release a "stock lollipop theme") but I'll take it.
We still have to wait for that new version of touchwiz to arrive to our galaxy notes, but until then (and maybe even after then) I would like to replace as many stock samsung apps as possible with stock android 5.1 apps, apps that look like them or apps that stick closely to the material design guidelines, so far my list looks like this:
Launcher: Material Nova launcher
SMS: (Google ) Messenger
Calendar : Google Calendar
Camera: I stick with samsung's since it offers more options than Google's Camera App
Contacts: I don't know what I should use
Music: Google Music/ Shuttle+
Calculator: I use numix (paid app) but I'm open to other suggestions
Phone: I don't know what I should use
Keyboard: Swiftkey with material design theme
Gallery: Quicpic
Clock: Clock L (paid app)
Which apps would you guys recommend to fill in the voids?
P.S. Before you ask, I already tried a stock android device, I actually returned my Nexus 6, because of the oversaturated look of the display, the slow camera and the just ok battery life
And no I don't want to flash a rom, I like having my warranty and custom roms are full of bugs

Try using Simpler Contacts/Simpler Dialer for the phone. If you're rooted, you can flash the Android Lollipop toggles/status bar theme available in the "themes and apps" section of this forum. You can also get a Lollipop Lockscreen from the Playstore although the lockscreen "ZUI" from the Playstore is great. Finally, try Grammophone music player, it's the nicest most material music player I've seen.

Thank you! Simpler dialer / contacts really looks like the stock lollipop app :highfive: , it's almost identical, which theme do you mean? This one?

I would love to get the rid of the s planner bar and the quick connect bar and to get those lollipop tones but I don't want to lose my warranty by rooting the phone
I'm gonna give zui a try and the other lollipop lockscreen app (there are 2 with that name)
I've tried gramophone and while it does look quite nice, I'm waiting for the developer to implement lastfm scrobbling and then I'll switch.
Thanks again, you've been really helpful

Yes, that's the Lollipop theme. Here's a photo with my phone using it...
You do need to have a custom recovery and root with it.
I flashed the Android 5.1 Cyanogen rom the other day and AOSP looks so nice but reverted back to TW for the functions of has, I wish we had the stock AOSP look with Touchwiz.

I'm gonna inform myself on how to make a touchwiz theme, because I really want to make a theme that looks very similar to stock android.
Samsung needs to slim down even more touchwiz, I find motorola's approach the best, stock look , with added functionality, sony's take on lollipop is also really really nice :good:

My favourite material stock look dialer and contact app is exDialer. It looks very similar to Simpler, but it's functionality suits me better. You can set up tap to call or to open contact, swipe actions and also shows my contact groups. I've also preferred Textra to Messenger as it has the stock look that is customisable, but doesn't change colours for each message, which is something that drives me nuts!!

I use Textra also, after trying a lot of sms apps, it's the best material stock type one I've found.

Ive been using Simpler Contacts and I like it but there's apparently no way to choose the contacts the app should display, so I end up with useless numbers from my provider, is there a way to get the app to display only the contacts on my gmail account?

Because I use 3 languages and with the Google stock keyboard it is a bit annoying having to switch languages, with SwiftKey I have prediction for the 3 languages I use at the same time as simple as that, I would like to use the Google stock keyboard though because I think it is more accurate but the thing I mentioned about lacking prediction for more than one language at the same time is a deal breaker for me
Gesendet von meinem Galaxy Note 4

All I do is use the Google Now Launcher and use as many google apps in place of their Samsung equivalent as possible. That's Google enough for me.

I downloaded the "L lockscreen app" but I'm not able to double tap the notifications to open them neither to control the music player, deal breakers for me
I also installed the lollipop lockscreen and also you're not able to double tap the notifications :crying:
Finally I tried ZUI and while it's kinda nice, it tries too hard to look like IOS going as far as to mimic the IOS multitasking menu, also no album art lockscreen is a bummer.
Guess I'll just wait for the S6 lockscreen :/
I also noticed, that when I make a call using simpler dialer (or ex dialer) it uses the stock samsung dialer, why?

[Q] Is there a way to use the Samsung widgets when TouchWiz is not your Launcher?

I really like some of the Samsung widgets, but to not like the Touchwiz launcher. So, I installed Launcher Pro, which I vastly prefer. Unfortunately, now the Samsung widgets are not in the add widget menu.
Is there any trick I can do to get them back?
I'd also like to know this, the Facebook Stream widget was really useful, the stock one is awful!

Yeah that is the widget I want most as well.
It is the best I have seen for android so far that integrates both twitter and facebook. I tried out this one on the market called "Socialite", it is *OK*, but not as good as the Samsung one.
So i have to decide, do I want a decent integrated Facebook / Twitter widget, or do I want a decent launcher?
???
Does anybody have an answer to this? I myself like pretty much all the futures in TW - would mainly like to change the 4 icons on the bottom and maybe even have the ability to hide the notification bar.
Is there a way to incorporate TW samsung widgets into launcher pro for example?
Thanks
I suppose Samsung's widgets are tied to the Touchwiz Launcher and incompatible with other launchers
It's a pity because I really like the Accuweather Clock over the other available widgets. But LauncherPro is so much better than the Samsung Launcher, I can't go without a launcher that lets me hide apps from the app drawer due to the massive amount of crap it gets flooded with.
You can change the left 3 icons on the bottom (but not the Applications one).
Just go to the Applications screen and press Menu and choose Edit. Then, move the icons off and put another in place.
I'm pretty sure it's impossible. I wanted to do that but was told by different ppl it was impossible. Same goes for Launcher Pro widgets in Touchwizz (i prefere the LP ones vs the Samsung). They are tied to the launcher u use.
You could put Home Switcher on each of the home screens of TW and LP then just switch between them just like moving to a different page. Just an idea.
Thanks fro the ideas, sounds like it's a no-go for right now at least.....
One more thing, does launcher pro juice the battery as same as TW? And when I used launcher pro in the past, I really liked to use the option "hide notification bar", i think it gives it a cleaner look, but at the same time it won't notify me when i receive an email ( other than the sound), I did search this in the past with no luck, so is there a widget, icon, something that I can install that will show on the screen when I received email, when using LP?
Thanks
I use executive assistant but it is a paid app. Worth it I believe though.

And what about TouchWiz ?

As said in the title. Do you find TouchWiz :
- convenient
- just different from stock Android
- un-convenient
?
Thanks for advance.
Thank you everybody for all your answers (just kidding) !
Let me add mine as I now have a Galaxy Note :
I find TouchWiz very nice. It is ergonomic, it does not slow the phone, and it greatly improves the look of vanilla Android (version 2.3.6 & 4.0.3).
I found touchwiz 4.0 a bit nice but im using ADW Launcher EX.
I very much like touchwiz over any 3rd party launcher because of all the features it has. I especially like the folders: I just wish Samsung would let us make a backup of folders . When I was flashing my SGS2 a lot, I HATED having to put my icons back into their folders. Not keeping folders I find to be a big mess.
I like touchwiz, go launcher is good too, but I much prefer Touchwiz
i am happy with touchwiz and no plan on changing it.
Used to dislike touchwiz very much, but I understand the Note has an improved version, e.g. resizable widgets, two way directions when scrolling through available widgets etc.
Now on the Note, it's my default launcher, though I also have Zeam--used to be my favourite--and LauncherPro Plus installed.
If nothing else, it's because I can create folders in TouchWiz whereas I can't do that in Zeam, and also the app drawer opens more smoothly.
I do like having 6 dock icons on Zeam though!

Thanks for the GO Launcher mention, it's my new free favorite launcher making my EVO 4G feel new+cool again with all those customizable effects (faster than sense too).
Go Launcher should now also help make it easier for me to hold out for CES news before deciding on my SGNote move..
I had to factory reset my EVO on Christmas after it was stuck in an infinite bootup loop for the first time but at least it fixed issues I was having with it.
- How is TouchWiz better than Go Launcher? TouchWiz looks like my dad's cookie cutter iPhone?
as a former iPhone user. I like TouchWiz; it also adds more features and shortcuts to Pure Google Android.
Got nothing against TouchWiz, it works well but it uses A LOT of resources.
Don't use any TouchWiz specific things really (Unless S-Pen features like S-Memo, S-Memo lite and screenshot annotation count)

[Q] Finally have ICS. How do I make this look like ICS?

First, I replaced the launcher. Apex Launcher is based on the stock ICS Launcher and looks great, but getting it to work with the weather and clock widgets seems to be crappy. These widgets know how to change layout based on size, and it seems like Apex is failing to notify them of the size change. Anyone know how to get those widgets to use a layout other than the long, thin stripe when using Apex?
Second, I'm wondering if I should replace the camera / gallery apps. Is there a significant advantage to the standard ICS apps? I'm hoping there's some reason Samsung gave us the old Gallery app, but anyone know what it is? Is the stock ICS gallery available to install?
I think if u just wait for a while. Some one will release a "Custom" Rom with re-design. Even though it will be stock with a layer on top of it, it will be all u need.

I'm not really interested in a custom ROM. Trying to stick with the stock roms as much as I can. That doesn't mean I won't install some better apps.
use Quickpic for gallery; significantly better than stock gallery, regardless of OS version!
As for weather widget, here's something to try:
Go to Apex Settings, Advanced settings, then uncheck "resize any widget"
see if the switch to conventional ICS resizing will change the Accuweather widget behaviour...
No guarantee but give it a go!

Yep should have added "watch this thread" to follow for ICS note version when done as ICS only out this week and no one will have it themed yet.
Personally I had a S2 and tried most themes and allways went back to stock plus a ICS look launcher, follow the S2 themes and you will see all themes don't get things right 100% grey txt on black background and then there was CM 9 etc with custom apps themed and you loose some of the original functionality.
Or follow checkrom.com for a ICS vers coming shortly???

What did you do for stock Android look?

Just trying to get some ideas for how to get a stock android look/feel as much as possible on the S6 without rooting it.
Interested to try out the material design theme along with the google now launcher when it's available.
What do changes have you guys made for a stock look and feel on your S6?
In case you hadnt seen it, try this. http://www.xda-developers.com/stock-lollipop-theme-now-available-for-s6-theme-engine/
As above, that theme and the Google Now launcher should do the job
EDIT: Google Now launcher works, but it reverts to stock Samsung app icons
I use nova launcher and Material theme and its great! You can see here https://youtu.be/l0cLB1fPHOg
Plus these are my favourite 3 themes available if you decide for other look https://youtu.be/l0cLB1fPHOg
Vanilla Android Experience on Galaxy S6
Yes Google Now is the way to go and get the Material Theme form the Samsung Theme Store. It's performance s very good and has no noticeable Bugs.
I use the new Material theme from Samsung theme store, then use Nova Launcher (with lollipop animations/looks selected) and use a lollipop icon pack
Cool!
I've ended up going with the Google Now Launcher and the Material Design theme (although i want to use the Material Dark theme if/when it makes it into the theme store)
I managed to get a icon pack that worked with google now launcher - although it doesn't change the icons within the app draw unfortunately. Maybe i'll try look for another icon pack.
Gonna keep tweeking but at the moment very happy with the google now launcher and material design theme to give me that stock look/feel.
Action launcher looks exactly like Google now launcher but is more customizable and supports icon packs. it's got some pretty awesome features too
What would be nice is If you could change the status bar icons e.g. Singal, battery etc to AOSP icons.
Google now launcher + FlyingBlue theme + Simpler Dialer and Contacts

Material theme not fully taking on S6

I recently moved from a Nexus 5 to a Galaxy s6. Of course I wanted the pure android look so I installed the google now launcher and the material theme.
The problem I am having is the phone icon still shows the ugly green touchwiz icon as well as the touchwiz camera icon (don't know if that should change or not).
From the screenshots I see it looks like the phone dialer should change as well.
Any ideas?
The icons will not change with the Google Now Launcher. You will need a third party app to do that, or use a launcher like Nova.
The in-call UI will not be themed, but the dialer should before you actually place the call.
Let me know if you have more questions :good:
Install Nova Launcher and then install Moonshine iconpack.
