Sometime last year I found a post detailing how to block the OTA update nag screen on my stock SU4.21 4.4.4 Droid Maxx. It even had instructions on what to do if it had already downloaded the update but not installed it yet (which I needed). I think that involved connecting to a pc.
Glad I never updated because by staying on SU 4.21 I used the recent root method to both root and use Sunshine.
Now I want to undo whatever change(s) I made since I can now freeze the updater.
I have spent two days searching the X and Ultra forums (and Google) but cannot find that particular post. Does anybody know what I'm talking about? It dealt specifically with non-root phones. I'm about 90% sure it was here on XDA.
And if you search and find the thread, mind sharing the search terms that got you there? Thanks in advance.
Nevermind, found it.

Ya'll can quit looking now...
What root method did you use?? I found one but I'm not too familiar with using adb and they said if you mess up it will brick your device so I stayed away from it, is that the one you used ? If not could you tell me which one you you used so I can root my maxx??

Oh yah the root method I didn't try because I don't have the skill set is the one where you use Quall comm or something like that and you use a rooted su4.21 system partition and you use rsd lite and something called python , and if it is the one you used could you try and explain it to me in a way a noob could understand lmao

Look for this the topic "[script] safe bionic path saver + .901 + liberty3 2.0 - version 2". It's here on xda in android development and hacking/ android software and hacking general. Sorry I can't post the link because I'm using the xda app. This thread works. I just finished using the path finder.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1450836&page=7
i don't see it under that is it like the last page or what??
yeah, that's the last page. Sorry about that.
thanks dude so could you tell me i run this pathsaver batt file i think it is runs scripts and then i flash the 896 i think it is then flash 901 there after is this correct ?? watched the video a while back but forgot exactly i suppose i could watch it again but my sound don't work at the moment..
You also have to use RSDLite 5.5 to flash an xml file.
Hopefull I posted the link around enough so if anyone else needs it, they don't have the same problem finding it. I understand looking for something before asking, but they could have put it somewhere that we would search. I had to find it through Google, not an XDA search.
yeah i installed rsd i am basically trying to be able flash the ics ???
Hope everything goes well for you.

Thats weird because I can't find any update for 7.2.1 anywhere. Amazons site still shows 7.1.5 as the current version. Maybe they haven't updated their site yet. If I manage to get this update I will try rooting and let you know.
There was stuff floating around in the forums about modifying the OTA system file so that it doesn't work.
I'm putting my faith in it, so I really hope I don't update.
I Do not know how to take a screen shot, so I can't show you, but it most certainly is 7.2.1. It happened sometimes last night. All of the apps still work, and I can still download from google play.

Since nobody else has even reported getting that OTA update, why don't you just try rooting it manually and see what happens? The procedure is available...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1892002
The critical parts are the first two steps...
1) Does it let you manipulate the /data directory and make it writeable after the first reboot?
2) Does it enable emulation mode with root enabled after the second reboot?
If that happens, the rest of it should work.
Now, I have to put my moderator hat back on and ask you not to make duplicate threads on the same topic. In addition, help questions don't belong in the General section. I've deleted that duplicate post. If you mistakenly post in the wrong section, bring it to the attention of a moderator and it can be moved for you.

This might still be helpful.
I was on original software for the kindle, rooted it, then it updated, root was removed, with the update I re-rooted and it worked fine again.
I received this update also and one thing you should be aware of is that this update will cause you to go to a dialog wanting to send you to the amazon appstore whenever an app tries to do something through the play store. When I first rooted before the OTA that did not happen. I was able to reroot it easily, just doing exactly what I did the first time and other than the play snore snafu everything else seems to be fine.
Thx. Here changelog
This software update will include a setting to let customers control whether or not personalized recommendations appear below the carousel on the device homepage.
This software update includes:
1. Kindle FreeTime, a tablet experience built for kids allowing parents to set daily screen time limits, and give access to appropriate content for each child.
2. A setting so customers can control whether or not personalized recommendations appear below the carousel on the device homepage.
3. Ability for customers to set the default device language to one of six languages, including English (US), English (UK), German, French, Italian, and Spanish.
4. Enhanced dictionary support, including the ability to download foreign language dictionaries.

Got same issue. Trying to update titanium backup. Kfhd says an app wants to use external market that's not available on kindle and asks whether I want to go to amazon shop or cancel operation.
That's sad.
I have not been forced to update as of yet.
Man, I was really looking forward to disabling the home screen recommendations.
But that Play Store nonsense sounds awful.
I have updated to 7.21. New things are all the ones you have detailed, and I have now my fire hd in Spanish.
Google play works but an app which need permissions such as adaway doesnt.

That is odd. The play store works just fine for me. I do not know why you have this issue.
If there is market problems now I do not want it, if not is it all that worth it. Unless im forced I wanna know. Do not like updating, until all is known about it.
Hi Folks,
I'm a smartphone newbie with an Optimus L90. I have some questions about rooting.
I've seen some articles that say that if you root your device you should be careful of automated ROM updates that will unroot your phone. How do most people approach these updates?
How often are these ROM updates necessary? Could I disable this feature & do this manually every month or so?
What about apps? If I manually updated these about every 2 weeks or month, would that be sufficient?
I realize that if I root this device I should only install trusted apps. To me this would mean Google Apps & Amazon, correct?
Regarding antivirus & security, this phone has LookOut running. I've seen some articles that say antivirus software is unnecessary. What are your thoughts on this? I wanted to change the settings for this program. However, I did not find a LookOut app in the apps area. How can these settings be changed?
Thanks,
Mark
What's the reason to root?
Just be careful and do nothing you don't understand. If possible make a backup of your system.
But first read on XDA and be informed

Root Question
Hello Bravho,
I've seen some info on the internet about these devices being more customizable when rooted. Although, you have an excellent point, I might not have to root. I thought maybe there would be a simple way to root & install a custom ROM on my phone. However, it seems in order to do this correctly I'll need to be more familiar with the OS. This means reading more of the posts on this forum & planning.
Thanks for taking the time to reply,
Mark

Updates for the L90 are NOT automatic, to my knowledge anyway. You must provide approval for the update to install. However, if you decide to flash a custom ROM such as CyanogenMod ( CM ), you won't have to worry about updates from LG

ROM updates roll out at irregular intervals, if they roll out at all. LG's L90 LG-D415 hasn't had an update as of yet, but several of the other variants have.

That really depends. With that line of thinking you'll have a very narrow list of applications available. If in doubt, don't install.

I've found it to be unnecessary. The only thing you can do to manage LookOut is to uninstall it. You must have root privileges to uninstall as it's installed as a system app.

Wow! Sorry, don't see many new people come here that actually have enough foresight to research before jumping in to modding their device. They usually jump straight in to modding without doing any research at all and then someone like me gets to explain how to fix what they messed up. :silly:
Rooting is fairly simple and straight forward. Flashing a custom recovery can be tricky for some as can flashing a ROM.
Hey everyone,
First, yes I have searched for this
This thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/one-stop-shop-how-root-moto-x-confusion-t2826159 as well as everything else I find still tells me that there is currently no way to root a 4.4.4 Moto X
Doing some searching on google I found this method that claims to work and it was just published about a month ago...
http://www.igadgetsworld.com/moto-x...unning-on-android-4-4-4-step-by-step-process/
I am however a little weary about the fact that still nobody on here seems to have a solution? Is this a method that will work or is it just going to brick my phone?
Sorry I am not the most knowledgeable about this stuff but have you guys seen this?
Mine is a VZW version that I am trying to root.

Those on 444 with the old X & Ultras are waiting for jcase & others to come up with some way to get Dan Rosenberg's exploit to work. Jcase said so far root is needed.
So root alone or temporary root to unlock the boot are yet to be found.

If you could get your device unlocked (depending on your carrier) you should have no problems with rooting (via Magisk).
Razer phones a pretty easy to root: Here's a guide I made on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/razerphone/comments/ge8n9m/comment/fprr4qn?context=1
