TMobile Tether Question - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm using Verizon now for home internet via a tablet with hot spot turned on. I moved to a rural area and no broadband is available. I don't want satellite because I can not game with it so I am stuck using Verizon. As you all know you have to pay per GB and its quite expensive. I need an alternative for internet and no carrier with unlimited data will allow you to tether. It looks like TMobile will be my best bet carrier wise and I know you can get around it so TMobile doesn't see that you are tethering.
Here is my question, I have searched for a few hours and looking at my options. I've found numerous places that tell you how to do it, but none of them have been updated for months. When you read the FoxFi comments everyone's claiming it doesn't work after the Lollipop update. Even found a few threads on here with recent comments, but no answer. I want to get a phone from TMobile just to tether the unlimited data. 5 GBs isn't enough for what I need. So can anyone confirm a method or point me in the directions of a thread that can tell me what is working currently? I don't want to start service with TMobile and it not work.
Thanks for anyone that can help.

Im on a lollipop rom on note 4 with tmobile, and I modified the files myself. Seems to work thus far.

Your not rooted? Just added the new APN with no VPN? And no app?

I am rooted. You must be referring to wifi tether app or something. I'm on a custom rom. Most (if not all) the tethering mods require root access. Maybe someone else can chime in on tether without root.

Ok this is a start lol. Looking at the Tmobile prices I don't think Note 4 would be a smart move for what I will use it for. Would the same methods work with an S3? you may not know worth a shot azking.

I've had s3, note 2, and now note 4 for my last 3 phones, all on the tmobile network. S3 is great and has a a lot of past development still available. Honestly though I'd go with something like the note 2 or 3 or s4. Those have better more recent development and can do the same things if not more. Good luck in your search

Thanks for the help bud I'll look into it more after the 7 day test drive.

[Q] Does Web2Go still work for you on N1?

Hi, I've been using Web2Go on my N1 with T-Mobile for the past couple years along with my brother. Today, it stopped working for both of us.
Anyone else have this problem? If so, what solutions have you found for it? Thanks!
BTW we are both also on CM7 if that matters. We're using the internet2 APN.
Thanks again!
It stopped working for me too today.
I thought it was a CM9 thing....apparently its bigger than that
same here =[
family plan, my bro's N1 is still working though.

is he using a different apn? If he is, please share
Stopped working for another line on my account too.
Had no choice but to call 611 and inquire. They said they will "Upgrade" me to the regular 200MB data plan with no overages and no additional charges.
I asked if they can give me the 2GB plan since they are changing my existing plan for their benefit, they couldn't do it. (They offered a 5GB plan for $25, i.e. $15 more)
Oh well, no market downloads over mobile and limited tethering for me... Looks like Tmo got hold of a majority of the Nexus One IMEI numbers.

same apn. internet2.voicestream
i'm hoping for some workaround
Stopped working for us as well.
Changed APN to wap.voicestream.com and its working again!
However, a lot of ports/sites are blocked. Can't access anything Google related, Facebook, Whatsapp, etc.
I'm looking into SSH Tunneling to see if that would fix the problem.
After 2 years of the amazing N1, think I'm going to switch to HTC Vivid or Galaxy SII i777 sometime soon. Yeah, I know I'll only get EDGE for now, but I don't mind. Maybe later I'll get 4G (some signs of tmobile getting ATT bands, but mostly speculation).
mine died today, too. once i get a chance, i'm switching to simple mobile.
Stopped working yesterday in TX.
If I'm gonna pay full price for internet, might as well get me
phone that can handle 4G.
Just wanted to also chime in. I'm in TX as well and I haven't had data service for the past two days. It was nice having web2go for 2 years, but I'm going to move towards just not having a data plan anymore, go prepaid, and use a usb stick whenever I travel for data.
My only other option would be to try to jump onto the $30 / month walmart plan -- gah I'm so tired of cellphone companies.

That may be an option, but that's effectively a downgrade that makes me rather consider switching to (gasp) at&t.
The N1 I have stopped working with the web2go data plan too. Does any one have any solution for this? Was planning to upgrade to something else now

Only thing you can do is swap to a plan that work.

Did you try configuring it to use the old proxy that the wap apn used?
If you're going to get another phone, I'd check the hofo wiki. They have a list of phones that have 3G ("4G") on AWS but are compatible with tzones.
TMO will probably never get 1900MHz 3G all over, just in a few places.

ATT cap on TMobile?

I have read and searched google for a while now and cant find anything recent concerning the ATT Captivate on the Tmobile network.
Some Youtube vids but they are all ancient.
The latest tread i found was dated around mid June 2013 involving Straight Talk and it did not seem to have a final resolution as to weather it's possible or not to use att's cap on Tmobile network.
Phone in question belongs to my daughter in-law and wants to have phone active for basic call use, not interested in getting new updated phone (S3 or S4) just concerned with basic calling and texting.
I have put phone thru its paces and it works fine as a 4" tablet on wifi , its running GB 2.3.5 , baseband I897UCKJ3 , kernel 2.6.35.7-I897UCKJ3 -CL614489 , build GB.UCKJ3.
I would appreciate any input on this from anyone that may still have a Captivate running on any pay as you go plan.
TIA.

The most basic answer is yes you can run the cappy on T-Mobile. That being said the phone will have to be unlocked in order to work on another carrier. You can either contact AT&T and ask them to give you the unlock code, find a site online that will sell you the unlock code, or find one of the many threads on here about how to do it yourself. If you do it yourself it will most likely require your phone to be rooted first. I even believe it's as simple as downloading an app from the play store and running it to unlock.
Now with all that being said if the person plans on using data at all you could run into a small problem. T-Mobile uses a different frequency for 3G/4G data than AT&T so you may only be able to connect to EDGE which is very slow compared to what you may be used to.
Thanks ml, its rooted already and looking into unlocking. Afterwards is it just a matter of slipping a tmob card into SIM slot?
Thanks again for your input, much appreciated.

Yes after its unlocked you should be able to pop the sim in and go. The only thing you might have to do is figure apn settings to make data services work. But that's not nessecary for calls and basic texting to work.

I used my Cappy last year with a Roam Mobilility, a company that sells
US airtime here in Canada for travelers. It runs on the T-mobile network. T-mobile is slowly changing their data network so you can get the H symbol when connected in larger centers. If you aren't in those areas you only get edge data speeds. Vegas, and Phoenix both had the new towers set up and I got great speeds there. The phone does work well for calls also.

[Q] Tethering XT1053 to AIO

Hey guys,
I know this may be just another in a long line of tethering threads so sorry in advance.
I'm moving from T-Mobile to AIO and I'm curious about tethering. I've heard the Nexus 5 now forwards you through seperate APNs for AT&T and T-Mobile. I'm guessing the Moto X does this too. I've been using T-Mobile and I my rare tethering doesn't go over their allotment, but I want it to be available when I need it on AIO.
Can anyone tell me if the Moto X will report when I try to tether. If so, what is the solution? I'd prefer to stick with stock if possible.
I use the XT1053 to tether on AT&T with no issues at all. And I've been through several billing cycles.

I've been (Bluetooth) tethering using GoPhone for the past 5 months (3 on the Moto X) without issue. I couldn't find anything on the AIO website indicating what their recommended APN settings are, but you'll most likely need to add 'dun' to the APN Type for tethering to work.

I don't know if it reports but I tethered via WiFi and USB both on H2O and AT&T GoPhone. Just checked the setting in UI. I have not done a lot of it, just to see that it works.
OK, I've really started diving into this and I'm learning a good bit. However, I still have more I've got to learn. I'm probably going to be downloading the AOSP later this week and working through some of the items in it.
So far, I can tell that some carriers actually have APNs written into Android AOSP for routing their tethering traffic through. From what I could tell, T-Mobile is the only US one. I saw others I recognized like Rodgers and Orange.
However, there is also the element of "APN Type" of DUN. I've read some say that this causes a flag to be set that carriers "COULD" use to tell if you are tethering. This would make sense considering I'm seeing some talk of a database value called "tethering_dun_required".
Once I get this all worked out, I might just write up a full up post for all of XDA on Android and Tethering. Plus, then it could get fact checked by the peer here.
Quick summary on the what this means for the question I asked, I don't think AT&T can tell right now. However, Android Kit Kat and above may be forcing DUN on my APN when I'm tething which they could in theory use. However, I'm not sure on that fact.

[Q] Does ATT look for tether the same as TMobile?

I will be moving to ATT by the end of the month, currently using the untether mod through exposed, working great. I was wondering if this method will work after I switch to ATT..searched around, but didnt see this anywhere recently discussed

I have XT1053 DE with unlocked bootloader and rooted on AT&T GoPhone. I can confirm that built-in USB and WiFi tethering work fine but I only used them for a short while just to see that it works. I don't know if AT&T detects it and if it does - what it will do. I also don't know if postpaid AT&T any different.

I read on another site that there is some sort of tether cloaker for ATT if you are rooted but I can't remember where I read it.
To tether on TMobile you need to be rooted? I'm switching over and would like to know before I do.
Well, I am on the unlimited plan, which started to come with a 2.5 gig hotspot. When I wasn't rooted, obviously my data rose on the hotspot when is tethered my iPad, but after rooting and using exposed etc. my hotspot data has stayed at .1 meg for that last 2 weeks

I got a slap on the wrist from AT&T after I used tethering for about a week. I called them for something and they essentially said "if you keep doing that, we'll start charging you for a tethering plan."
AT&T Mobile Share plans have a bucket of data, and it can be used on the device or tethering ... doesn't matter how you use it.

do you have a grandfathered unlimited data plan.
Nope, at the time I had a 2gb data plan.

[Q] Which one do I want? D:

Upgrading from a very buggy Galaxy S4 here. (The bugs are my fault and I'm not savvy enough to fix them, so I just deal with them.) Have a few questions about which version of the S6 I should get because I'm seeing a lot of info and I'm not really sure what all of it means, so hopefully you guys can give me straight and simple answers.
1. I'm currently on Straight Talk using AT&T. However, Verizon is overall the best in my area, so if I get switched to a new client where AT&T doesn't work I may need to change back to Page Plus quickly. I'm seeing conflicting information on the unlocked versions of these phones, but there does seem to be hope out there that it's possible for some versions to be able to switch between the two easily. Which version do I want if I want to be able to switch between AT&T and Verizon? If you're bored and want to look or know of a handy link where I can buy one of these phones, please feel free to toss it at me. eBay sellers 75% of the time don't seem to know what they're selling when it comes to unlocked phones.
2. An out-of-the-box, working mobile hotspot feature is extremely important to me. My S4 is messed up primarily because my attempt at making the hotspot work didn't go as easily as it was supposed to. I've seen on these forums that some users are saying that at least the Verizon version will work if you use FoxFi, no rooting or tether file hacking required (so no risk of me breaking my phone, yay). I have the paid version of FoxFi already, so that's good news if it's true. Confirm/deny and is the same true for the AT&T version if I had to get that instead?
In case it makes any difference: I'm not really set on getting the Edge if I have to get the regular S6 for the above features, I just couldn't decide which forum to post this in.
Thanks all!
