Ok so every phone ive had i turn off the auto brightness and crack it all the way up.
Then when im using the phone and i haven't touched anything the screen will go from 100% brightness to 50% and then a few seconds later (if i don't touch the screen) the screen turns off.
Well ive noticed this only happens sometimes. (uselly when im at work it works) But 90% of the time, ill be using the phone then after some inactivity the screen dims from 100% to like 98% if your not looking for it you wouldn't even notice. Then a few seconds later turns all the way off.
I have smart stare or w/e it is turned off.

Noticed the same problem here. With auto brightness on dimming works correctly, but I never find auto brightness does what I want, so I usually don't use it. Very annoying problem! Hopefully Samsung fixes this issue soon!
I'm facing the same issue. My phone goes to screen off mode without dimming, which is very annoying. Otherwise, the phone is pretty good.

I just bought a nexus one the other day, and i think I was scammed. THe power button works fine, but occasionally, the screen would get super dim. It doesn't black out because I can faintly see all of the icons and menus, and I can tap them. ALso, its not automatic brightness, because its horribly horribly hard to see. Pulling the battery (sometimes) fixes this problem.
I'm currently running Kang-o-rama with SP2.
Has this ever happened to anyone? If so, how did you fix it?
It does sound its the auto brightness. If you're outside and its dims it is very hard to see. You the default android power widget to test it. It has brightness toggle on it. Full /auto/dim/ and basically the middle.
I'll take a picture of it once my dad comes home, but I tested it last night if it was autobrightness.
I waited for it to dim, then went into settings, disabled autobrightness, and put the brightness all the way up. It was still super dim, and didn't return to normal until I pulled the battery.
I would look for support in the thread for that rom. Or flash another rom. Sounds like it is just a bug in your rom.
I just installed a Miui rom hoping it'll fix it (cause I was using cm7 based roms) and it worked for a while.
Now it began to Flicker and finally turned off. It'll ring when phones call it but nothing will show on the screen. I'll pull the battery but this time nothing shows up (though it vibrates indicating it turns on).
I know this is a hardware problem now, do you guys know what part it is?
Please, any input is appreciated.

Hi,
sometimes when locking the screen it fades out but sometimes it doesn't and just turns straight black. Is there a possibility to force an "always fade" setting? (phone is rooted of course) I love smooth animations and this "bug" just destroys this feeling of smoothness.
Greetings

I use the app Screen Off with different screen off animation, a good app to power off your device without pressing the Power button
I just noticed that yesterday as well. It only fades off when the screen brightness is at 30% or higher. When below that , it will just black out.
Made possible by my sexy LG Optimus 4X HD (P880)

You're right.
It seems like the brightness is included in the calculation of the fade duration.
If it's at 100% it fades way longer.
Who the **** thought about including the brightness in the fade calculation, thats just retarded :silly:
I will look into it at the weekend (or probably earlier) and see if I can find out where the fading is done and if I can manipulate it.
EDIT: After looking at the fade-effect for about 100 times I finally got whats going on. It reduces the brightness in a given interval till it reaches about 30% and then turns the screen off. I think this can be done nicer and I will try to do so.
Hey on my Xperia Z stock rom nothing flashed, when it is in standby (screen off) randomly the screen glows and does not stop, like the screen is still off but it's like the back light has come on? is this normal? seems to be a power wasting thing to me. unless i look at it from a slight angel (during the day) i can not actually tell it's on, i'm assuming this is why my screen is using 60+% of my battery is there a fix for this?
Are you using any power saving mode?

Stamina mode.
I have the exact same thing happen, and it is definitely a pain as like you say you can only notice it when looking at an angle, and as I have a flip case on mine I only notice while charging. It is just a case of pressing the power button twice to turn off but that is obviously only when you notice it's doing it! lol
I use stamina mode on mine (which is great) but not sure if this is anything to do with the backlight being left on as it only does it sometimes?
I had this issue when i first got my phone ,and not anymore. Not sure how it solved cause i did lot of factory reset and flashing firmwares.
Are you using light flow or any third party apps?

I get this too. I get it when it's locked and it comes back on. Also when I unlock the screen sometimes this happens and I have to turn the screen off and on again to fix it.
Happening here also but not often. I thought it was low battery mode but happens when it's disabled as well.

No i'm not using any third party light apps, seems like this may be an actual bug if multiple people are experiencing it
I have only done one reset/repair to fix the LED notification light bug.
Hope this helps
I know how to fix this. I have an xperia z1 so im not sure if my problem is the same but i use my phone as an alarm so i notice at night the screen is glowing while its standby. If you go to settings or maybe you have it in quick settings go to brightness and deactivate "adapt to lighting conditions" then it should be a black screen woth no glow in standby mode
This has always been confusing and I am looking for clarification on the Lock Screen/ Screen dimming, etc.
So I went into the display settings and set it not to turn off for 1 minute. Then I checked the power saving settings just to be sure the screen would not go dim or lock after 5 seconds. That did not work. Then I checked the security settings to see if something was over ridding every other time out setting and I am lost. Either these settings have never really worked since the original note and android/ google is lazy or I am not doing something right.
Dose anyone have a step by step walk through of all the settings that would affect when the screen dimms and when it locks? (Sometimes I am running music through blue tooth and I don't want to the screen to dim for specific applications also. There has to be a setting somewhere because Google Maps does not allow the screen to dim or lock when in nav mode.

I really wish someone would have answered your question. Mainly since I have the same freaking problem.
When the phone app is running, I am constantly getting dimmed, seconds only to do something.
Tonight I was using an app that monitors BBQ temperatures. Always dims to fast. Set the screen timeout for 10 minutes. Still dimmed after 30 seconds or so.
How does this work? I'm not sure the screen timeout setting does anything.
The screen diming feature is part of the auto brightness function and works by using the ambiant light sensor to adjust the brightness of the display. According to the amount of light detected in front of the display.
Screen locking happens when you haven't used your device for a specific amount of time.

It dims before it locks. That's what I was referring to. I think the OP was as well.
I set the display for 10 minute timeout. It dims and locks the screen in less than a minute. I can't figure out how to stop it.
Is that a clearer question?
Well my screen dims for some seconds before going out, but, always as per the time I set , for instance, if I set to go out after 5 mins of inactivity, it dims after 4 mins 55 seconds, then goes out, I dont use autobrightness, and I use entertainment mode
It was secure lock time setting.
It was disregarding the screen timeout.
My red magic 3 will randomly turn the screen on even with the option to not wake up the screen in every settings I could find. I have seen it happen when I'm driving or walking and even just having the phone on my night stand.
Then screen will turn on and there's no new messages or notifications, it just turns on.
Any ideas as to what I could try?
My friend has this exact same issue! We both have the same phone, mine does not do it but his does. Just, randomly the screen turns on, doens't seem to be related to notifications or anything. If anyone knows what's causing this, it would be appreciated. Thanks!
