[guide] best roms/kernels for i9305 - Galaxy S III I9305 (4G LTE + 2GB RAM) Q&A, Help &

Hi all ! I made this thread to share with you my experience with i9305 roms/kernel and to make it easy to users which rom to choose ! I tried almost every rom/kernel for i9305 and here are my feedbacks.I didnt make thus thread to say this rom is good and this one is bad! just to compare depending on stability speed battery life ... on every android version you will find the best rom! Let's start
ROMS
Android Lollipop 5.x
Android Lollipop 5.1.x
AICP 9.0 Rom: I personally think that this is the best 5.1.x rom for i9305!
It s really fast and stable and has a great battery life
Note: RR rom is awesome also but aico is more stable (I got some fcs with RR)
Android 5.0.x
In android 5.0 I ll give to great roms to try
1.CyanogenMod 12 : even it is an unofficial rom but cm12 by winxuser is amazing specially stable build
2.AICP 8.0 : it is unofficial also but a very good rom
Androod KitKat 4.4.4
so in kk 4.4.4 I ll devide it to 3 sections : stock/stock based . Note 4 rom . S5 rom
Stock/stock based
I think Amcha rom is the best stock based 4.4 rom for i9305 ! n4 and s5 trasformers are there
Note 4
N4 Elite lite is the best
S5
S5 elite lite is the best
thanks @MaHo_66
Note: also qasim's note 4 ultimate rom is good but it has some bugs and issues
Alsi The Galaxy Project rom is amazing but it has less features compared to amcha
Kernels
For Lollipop 5.1.x
Agni 2.9.1 is the only one currently
For Lollipop 5.0.x
Boeffla is the best in battery life
Archie is the best in features
For KitKat
Agni kernel is the best
Thanks all

Thanks for your opinions. I planning to make S3 LTE my next phone, and for someone who is just starting here, knowing what others are enjoying the use of is great start for my flashing beginnings. Especially with the huge list of ROMs available. I know these "best ROM" threads are normally looked down upon, but I always value others opinions. Good starting point for S3 LTE noobs.

I've tried quite a few ROMs on my I9305. Only had it a few months.
CM12.1 - very smooth, the smoothest I've tried. GPS takes minutes to fix and not very accurate, data unreliable, many video playback problems, so I reluctantly left it (at BETA 4 stage).
AICP 8 (5.0.2) - quite smooth but I could not get rid of an issue with music dropouts when screen is off, despite trying all the kernels etc. A few extra features like ad blockers which didn't seem to work too well.
CM11 - very smooth (smoother still with ART on). GPS also not very good and data unreliable, but video playback at least is OK. Sleep of death on occasions. Seemed to chop the beginning off sound notifications, so didn't always hear them. Music drops out when cell connectivity changes. More bugs that I've forgotten. This was last month so I doubt it's any better now.
N4 Elite (KK stock based) - very pretty but very laggy. If you disable (root app delete) most of the features it gets better but still laggy. Smooth one minute, laggy the next, as though some process was misbehaving. Worth keeping an eye on in case it gets smoother.
S5 Elite (KK stock based) - a lot of trouble to install for some reason, lots of connectivity issues, completely failed to connect to my office wifi at all (EAP auth). Didn't try it for very long so no idea about GPS etc.
4.4.4 stock - no major problems, a few graphical glitches (may have been Agni kernel), not quite as smooth as 4.3, no reason to use it over 4.3 as we had transparent status bar anyway and Samsung did not enable ART.
4.3 stock - everything works! Data and Wifi are reliable, GPS fixes in seconds and is accurate to 10 feet, no issues or glitches with anything at all. And it's smooth. Not as smooth as CM12.1 but smoother than any KK rom I tried. This is with lots of the Samsung crap turned off/deleted of course.
---------- Post added at 04:39 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:37 PM ----------
I should add that I am using 4.3 at the moment. I like trying the new ROMs but eventually I just want a phone that works properly so I go back to 4.3!

Best Roms
I have to agree Amcha too is my favourite stock based. Smooth and great with Google launcher.
I have tried all the 5.x ROMs and as a CM fan go CM12 closely followed by AICP both using custom kernel as I need the extra volume being a bit deaf.
But at the moment I'm using the new Miui 6 rom . I have to say thanks to those who work on it - its smooth , very fast, decent battery life, excellent modem in the UK, bug free from what I can see and just works well. It takes a bit of setting up to clear up some of the CN apps etc but definitely my daily for now. I'm sticking with 4.4.4 because I use iPlayer a lot and sadly none of the 5.x's will run on it yet.
Updated to 5.6.6 today
Now has 4 way boot and more toggles ie Sync among other fixes/improvements. OTA appears broken but downloaded from the miui link and flashed in 'normal' way.
*Mega download doesn't seem to work on mobile - just opens Mega app advert for the Playstore .

I don't know I used something called rom cleaner right after I flashed it.
I've now found a better option anyway - Amcha ROM. It's based on stock Samsung 4.4.4 (so everything works) but it is de-bloated from the start, and has plenty of options in the aroma installer for adding extras that you want and removing stuff that you don't. It's also extremely smooth. You get a choice of three UI styles - S3 (stock), S5 and N4. I tried the N4 option but that still has some issues with colours I think (some menus with white text on white). The S5 UI is perfect and has no issues.

You can also mix up the Stock i9305, S5 and Note 4 styles if you wish. I 'experimented' as I kind of prefer the Stock menu style rather than the coloured circles for About, Wifi etc, but like inparticular Note 4 styling. The white on white bug could do with a fix though.

on stock jb my i9305 was always a battery eater.
I tried many roms but all had problems . .
I found r-extreme jb and everything worked nicely for ages, till I got sdcard corruption. . a jb/kernel issue, can't remember now. But kk was maturing, and I wanted better battery life. .
Then I found SlimSaber 4.4.4. The camera just worked, unlike other kk roms that need workarounds. The display dpi was far too small for my aged eyes but easy to fix. Gps required an app to set region, then it worked fine. Some cut and try with modems, as usual. I find the "real dark slim" very clear to read.
Then google-play-services auto updated and the phone never went to deep sleep. My battery problems got worse. None of the "fixes" worked so I re-installed and went gapps free. I imported my contacts from a vcf, email from the builtin email app, maps from nokias "here" app.
After 6 months the only thing I really miss is calendar sync, but for me battery life has now doubled and my phone is fast and lag free.

Are Lollipop rom's on VS980 stable now?

I'm running baseband 26a with xdbbeb's rom, everything works just great.
I see so many new Lollipop rom's but last time I updated roms, none of the AOSP one's were as stable as the stock rom.
- is the Lollipop update on Verizon G2 worth getting?
- are the Lollipop AOSP roms good enough now? wr.t. things like data connection, wakelocks, batery life etc
Not quite yet, although very close. I'm new to the G2 scene, and have been out of the loop for about a year and a half while using a non rooted Moto X , but after a weekend of playing with Xenon and a few other AOSP roms on a new vs9800 G2, here's what I see as of today:
There seems to be a data roaming issue (I frequently lose data connection)
GPS doesn't show a "lock" although it seems to work
An occasional random reboot
Tap to wake doesn't work after a reboot, but will start working after I make a call.
I think a few of these are about to be fixed, but can't wait until everything gets sorted out! Not a bad phone, love the screen and it will rock with a stable 5.1.x AOSP rom!
Thanks for replying! I think I'll wait too.
The lollipop update on the Verizon G2 is fine and stable. I don't have "any" problems outside of just normal lollipop changes to notifications, but it works as it should and works great.
AOSP builds on the other hand... I am unsure. It seems there are still a few loose ends, mostly with the Double Tap to Wake being finicky. With a phone designed around that feature, I have steered clear but I have heard that developers found the fix on the AOSP builds and just waiting to release updates.
I have always used AOSP and CM based builds starting with the Nexus One (and owning a long line of Nexus devices). However the LG G2 is great in that the stock LG software is perfect. It has a slight LG feel, but allows lots of customization and features that I just can't reason getting rid of. Of course I get rid of the launcher immediately in lieu of Nova Launcher... but otherwise I LOVE the keyboard (with the dedicated number row), the WiFi Storage options, and the QSlide floating Apps. I really miss the dual-window of the newer LG software. I don't know why the Verizon G2 didn't get Dual Window and Knock Code of the newer software (some versions of LG G2 got these).

What ROM would you recommend that's most stable and fast for the TouchPad?

Hi there.
I installed a version CM12 Tenderloin a few months back. It's pretty good for the most part but I've noticed some minor bugs with it and I'd like to try another ROM. I noticed that the CM12 roms aren't as popular as the CM11 ones based on the activity of the threads. Any particular reason why CM12 hasn't really caught on? What ROM do you recommend, and do you think is the most stable, reliable and fast?
Thanks in advance.
I came today looking to the answer to a similar question: What's the lightest rom currently for HP/TP? I used to use Oat's lite and tasty, but that's been defunct for quite some time. Is there a new hottness?
Try Jcsullins CM11

CM11 is still regarded as more stable, Jcsullins Rom is one of the most popular builds.

I have units running both the Evervolv and Pac Man Roms. The latest release of Shumash Pac rom is very stable with great battery performance. They are both a lot more stable than the CM12 roms.

I stand corrected, thanks for the information I will update that post cheers:highfive:
I've tried so many versions over the past few months and my personal consensus is that any 5.0 rom is most stable. However, all I do is watch YouTube and browse internet.
Here's a breakdown of my experiences:
5.1 Roms (PacMan and Evervolv)
Wifi issues: Frequently stops transmitting data. Need to either restart tablet or toggle wifi on/off to reset.
Youtube often will start to stutter and then stops playback completely. Sometimes videos just won't play
General responsiveness is not smooth. Lots of momentary hangs
VPN connects but does no routing (OpenVPN). Leaks my IP
5.0 Roms (Milaq)
Some Wifi issues: not as bad as 5.1 but I will occasionally need to reset wifi
Youtube plays prettty good. Some slowdown on 720p videos but does not stop. Sometimes videos don't play, needs app restart
Smooth UI and app responsiveness
VPN connects but does no routing (OpenVPN). Leaks my IP
4.4 Roms (Milaq and Jscullins)
Very smooth from the get go. LIttle to no pauses
Wifi is rock solid
VPN works as expected
Youtube very often stutters with audio/video and will stop playback until app is terminated and restarted. A real experience killer
Very frequent OS restarts. The deal breaker for me. Happens almost every 30 minutes or so.
So, tl;dr, 5.0 is the best. 5.1 the worst, and 4.4 is middle of the road. No complete rom atm, in my opinion.
5.0 would be my instant recommendation if not for VPN not working. I think it's clearly a lollipop issue as the exact profiles work fine in cm11
Thanks everyone. I hate to revive an old post but I've been really busy and never got around to installing a new ROM yet. Basically I only want to install a more stable ROM so I can give it to my son to watch videos from time to time. He really only uses it for 3 things;
1) Youtube
2) Watch videos I've downloaded for him using MX Player
3) Play kiddie learning games
5.0 actually does the job quite well, but not up to my satisfaction as I'm rather picky. I'd like to increase the battery life if possible, and I do find the performance to be a little sluggish compared to what I had before. Right now on a full charge the tablet can last maybe 48 hours with light use, 24 hours with moderate use, and 4-5 hours if used heavily.
One thing that really bugs me with 5.0 is that if I stream any live videos from sites like vipbox.tv or gofirstrow.eu the audio is always laggy. It works fine if the stream isn't live, but only has a problem if the stream is live. I never had a problem with the old ROM which is why I'd like to go back to 4.0.
So it's been a few months now since I started this thread. Any other new ROMS that people would recommend?
I just installed jcsullins lollipop version. Yes. Working camera! Stable as a rock. Recommended!
I'm using cm-12.1-20151116-SNAPSHOT-jcsullins-tenderloin.zip
Standard Non-Touch CWM Recovery
Lollipop Base Gapps package for 5.1.1
Read more here
I have tried 4.4, 5.0 and 6.0
6.0 seems the most stable but it is damn slow... youtube plays fine but often experience force closes... same for almost all apps.
4.4 is the fastest but youtube stutter a lot for some reasons; anyone got a fix??
Bump for any new updates on suggested ROMS for the Touchpad.
I just purchased another one for my youngest one who broke his a few months back.

So you really believe that this build gives the best overall experience? I had a pacman lollipop rom on my tp for some years and it worked well but it would shut down some apps sometimes and some apps didn't work at all. I put 7.1.2 evervolv on it and it became unstable and would shut down pretty consistently. I want an os that is stable but can run apps properly and can be overclocked. Can this one be overclocked?
I put this one on but youtube vids were all messed up. Not great for my kids. I guess off to find a better rom.

The user experience is subjective and depends largely on the apps you regularly use. To fix the YouTube issue open the app play a video and go to settings (three dots upper right), set the Quality to 720p. All the builds will overclock if rooted, use Kernel Adiutor here.
I find a lot of apps require at least Android 5.0
Is there a stable 5.0 rom for the TP?
I have two apps on Evervolv 9.0
Wyze cam and Youtube Vanced
Everything seems so laggy on android 9.0. Have followed the guide to increase swap to 1gb, cpu to 1.8ghz, and remove crap from rom.
So i have the same question.
as a bonus, any tips on increasing the maximum system volume would be nice

[Q] What is the most stable and complete custom rom for the Xperia SP?

Currently still stuck on the official Android 4.3.1 version. Looking forward to upgrading to 4.4.4 or 5.1.1 but don’t know which rom to choose.
Which rom is the most stable and is the most complete in term of Xperia SP features such as the notification leds and camera?

I used slimkat rom (4.4.4) until a few days ago and i was satisfied with it.
I'm now looking around for upgrading to 5.1.1, but every rom i use has wifi issues: wifi drops if the screen is turned off for 10 minutes. I tried several roms :
- AICP : Satisfied, but wifi drops
- XenonHD : didn't started after full wipe of cache, dalvik and system. I did a reset of the battery and then it started, but i found it too laggy.
- Slim 5.1.1 beta 0.12 : Satisfied but wifi drops and less features then the other roms
- cm 12.1 20151211 nightly : satisfied, but wifi drops
- Candy5 release 4.0 20151015 : Best rom i used considering speed and options, but wifi drops also
All forum posts i read are saying that the wifi drops also is happening at cm12, but i'm going to test it myself.
Some persons are saying that the router is the cause of the wifi drops, but i'm having trouble with accepting that because the problem appears only on roms with 5.1.1. I already played with the settings of the router (only 2.4ghz, combination etc) but no lock so far.
I'm considering going back to 4.4.4 because of the wifi drops...
Grts,
Tom
The wifi drop with disabled screen seems to be an issue with various models with version 5.1.1 (Nexus 5, oneplus, xperia sp, etc).
The solution that works for me is using the app "Wifi roaming fix".
You can install the app and let it run in the background. As long as the is some kind of activity on the wifi adapter it keeps connected during the turned off screen.
Grts,
Tom

I have been flashing my XPERIA SP with a lot of custom roms. Among them i found xenon hd 5.1.1 (first version), omni x ( kk 4.4.4 by @NeilDownx thanks for a best kk rom for xsp) , candy 5 is also good but i prefer xenon hd over it.
Last words: all lollipop roms are good for sometime but occasionally lag after sometime. Flashing t-kernel makes it more worse. And battery drain is alot. Amony all roms i have tested i use omni x . and try to use stock kernel .. Better battery n stable without lags. Use 2a charger for faster charging time. Overall the rom is stable and try not to use high ram hoging apps. Install greenify for battery life. Use performance option on settings and underclock max freq to 1.3 ghz for normal use and better battery and use wheatley governor. Thats all cheers.
cyanogenmod 12.1 Unofficial sabermod ROM ! I tried all lollipop roms and it is the best i think. EspeciallyBattery goes long long long way !

The underclock how will affect the fluidity of the interface, smootheness, any downsides of this actions ?
And lastly, the answer is the same regardless the (lollipop) Rom installed ?

The underclock does some effect on touch responses, but its tolerable. There are no noticeable effects other than while hd gaming.. Gives some lags..you got to sacrifice something to get something(battery life). And i didnt get what u meant about the lollipop rom(not so good at english-- asian)

It's ok i found out by myself, thank you.

I'm looking for a super stable ROM with good battery life. Which do I choose?

The title pretty much says it all. I'm looking for a super stable ROM with good battery life. Which do I choose?
I have a short list of things I need:
Lollipop or Marshmallow
Debloated
Good battery life
Stable
Bluetooth
I don't care about camera quality (though the camera should work if I want to use it...) so I am open to the idea of using an AOSP ROM if it can meet my requirements.
I'm using SLiM ROM version 4.8 (Android 5.1.1) right now and have a few problems with it:
If I reboot, I typically get stuck in a bootloop until I enter recovery and format the cache. Then it takes 10-15 minutes to start up.
I use Google Keyboard which can be very sluggish sometimes (not sure if that's the keyboard's fault or if it's the phone).
The stock camera app and snapchat both crash when I attempt to record video. This is usually fixed by a reboot... but only temporarily.
Sometimes I don't get notifications from Hangouts or the notifications are delayed (not sure if this is a problem with Hangouts or the phone)
Is there an updated SLiM ROM that's more stable? Or should I look for something different? I really liked using AOSP ROMs on my old phones but they typically lacked decent battery life.

T'es there is SLIMM 3.1 on the forum. It's MM for mashmallow
I am running a stock ROM and hangouts doesn't send notifications for me either. It has nothing to do with your setup. I've tried hangouts on 3 different devices (2 HTC's and a Sony) and something has always not worked with that app on all those devices. Google needs to get their act together.
Try Sony Concept ROM, it is on Marshmallow therefore it has Doze and it is as stock as it can get which means it is debloated. Battery life is superb, no bloatware, camera is as good as stock, one of the most stable ROMs out there! Also it is still receiving OTA updates and becoming more and more efficient. As for the video recording bug in your Lollipop ROM, it persists in this Concept ROM I'm talking about. But you can fix it by renaming these files in /system/etc/firmware/
tzwidevine.b00 -> tzwidevine.b00.bak
tzwidevine.b01 -> tzwidevine.b01.bak
tzwidevine.b02 -> tzwidevine.b02.bak
tzwidevine.b03 -> tzwidevine.b03.bak
tzwidevine.mdt -> tzwidevine.mdt.bak
This works for KitKat (yes KK has that issue too, along with "There was a problem while playing... etc." error in YouTube), Lollipop and Concept ROMs.

The title pretty much says it all. I'm looking for a super stable ROM with good battery life. Which do I choose?
I have a short list of things I need:
Lollipop or Marshmallow
Debloated
Good battery life
Stable
Bluetooth
......
I really liked using AOSP ROMs on my old phones but they typically lacked decent battery life.

If you are going to try the SLIMM 3.1, do 2 things to maintain good daily battery life:
1) Settings -> About Phone -> Status -> Charging Optimization: This is ON by default - you may notice less battery daily. This feature tries to maintain better battery life over the long run (i.e. battery lasts for more years). You can turn this feature off.
2) Location: Only turn this on when it's needed. Some users (including myself) noticed Google Play Services was draining battery randomly while Location was on.
I can see that there is a new SLIMM 3.2 out - I don't know if it addresses either of these 2 issues. Good luck!

I forgot about that one! That has gotten so bad I don't even try looking at Youtube videos from Reddit or even the app.
I will definitely try the concept ROM and this fix. Thanks!

Most up-to-date (security wise) ROM with tolerable battery life and 5Ghz WiFi tetheri

Hi,
I've been daily driving LineageOS 16 for a while and although it's a pretty neat ROM with latests (to my knowledge) security patches, cool stock-android vibe with some in-house tweaks, 5Ghz WiFi tethering ain't working at all (known issue) and battery life has known better days.
So I'm looking for a new ROM to daily drive... One with a functional 5Ghz WiFi tethering and the most up-to-date security patches. I don't really mind if it rolls back to Marshmallow or even implies to use TouchWizz again (ewww)... Although it would be cool if I could natively change pixel density (Stock ROMs look like toys to me with their big fonts, icons and UI elements)
Also, my Galaxy S5 is not the most generic one, it's a SM-G900I, the Asian/Indian variant under Snapdragon (klte?)
Also, I'd like to know if you'd have any Kernel to recommend that may improve Battery life/Performance ratio to go along with it, have to admit I'm kinda rusty with the whole thing
On top of that, do you guys have any advices to optimize battery life, limit what goes on background without scarifying too much performance (I like it to feel snappy, and the device is getting old)... I don't know... Apps to limit background usage, system tweaks and so on...
Sounds like I'll have to stick with the mighty Galaxy S5 for a while before I'll upgrade and make it a remote/emulation handled for its retirement
Thanks!

I Cant tell you what rom to use , there are plenty of roms out there sorry you gotta find a rom by yourself,
If you use magisk you can install fde.ai which will make your phone faster and battery-friendly without overheating or slowdowns as it names tells, its an ai which works on background to make your phone power-saving without slowdowns or performance-improving without overheating or the battery getting drained fast , and if you have the stock battery you may buy another one for your phone and replace it with the stock battery , And If You Want My ROM That Im Using Then Its The Resurrection Remix Latest Version , its very stable , the latest uptade was on September of 2019

never say "look for yourself"! that is why forums are for... for not looking yourself, because somebody already did that! don't you think so?
I'm using LuisROM CrDroid 6.7 with Tuned Kernel. I've found this to be a great combination on my phone. I have the S902L. The ROM is based on Android 10 and has the latest security updates. Battery life is really good. I'm not sure if the 5ghz tethering works as I never use tethering, but everything else on the ROM works flawlessly. Give it a shot.

I almost forgot to mention, make sure you are using the latest TWRP and backup your EFS partition using the latest version. Seriously. I ran into a problem of no cellular signal after I flashed a kernel update. My EFS backup was made on an older version of TWRP. It was a real headache getting this fixed. So use the latest TWRP to make your backup.
