Just wondering if people have done it and didn't like it, or vice-versa. It does seem bad for the hardware, but I can't stand softkeys/button saviour.
If you're using nookie Froyo, you can try the MENU/BACK soft buttons in the status bar mod, instead of remapping the vol+/- buttons. I've been using it since it came out, and can confim it works for nookie Froyo 6.7. Here's the link to the original thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=932631
It does have it's issues, mainly with the stock browser, and causing it to FC. Other than that I have not noticed any other problems.
If you are interested in useing the mod, but don't know how to install it, let me know. I'll pm you or post instructions.
I absolutely recommend remapping the volume buttons. Softkeys is nice, but kind of a pain sometimes. For instance, when I would view pictures in the XDA APP, I would have to restart the app instead of backing out, for some reason softkeys wouldnt let me back out of the picture viewer. It's just much easier to have the menu and back buttons always available than rely on software. I installed volume volume control if I need to adjust volume for some reason.
Is there an app that puts volume in the status bar that anyone knows of?

Yup... I've got a Pandigital Novel(white v2) w/custom fw and it'd be essentially useless w/o re-mapping the vol keys to menu and back along with soft-keys in the notification bar...
NC has one up on the WPDN though, it has the n home key plus the 2 vol keys and volume can be controlled through setting or a quick-settings app anyways or by adding soft-keys... still no substitue for physical keys or capacitive screen keys though, unfortunately... (spoilt by gtab with the full complement...)

I'm sure you guys know where I'm screwing up. After I adb pull, I only get this
/system/usr/keylayout/twl4030-keypad.kl -> ./twl4030-keypad.kl
/system/usr/keylayout/qwerty.kl -> ./qwerty.kl
/system/usr/keylayout/AVRCP.kl -> ./AVRCP.kl
but it says to edit " 'TWL4030_Keypad.kl' and 'omap_twl4030keypad.kl' "with your text editor of choice; I used vi, always a safe choice.
I don't have the omap. what should I do?

Just modify the qwerty.kl in the place of omap. That's what I did and things are working fine.

I am on the stock 1.1 rooted and have mapped my volume buttons - I have tried the other ones, and I MUCH prefer having hard buttons.
I downloaded a volume app "Volume Master Free". It has about 5 different volume controls, but I only use the system volume and the media volume controls.
I use Zeam as home screen; and I put a shortcut to Volume Master on the bottom right of my Zeam shortcut bar. It works very well. I do need to go to the home screen to change volume; but I can tap on the notification bar and toggle mute, so that works for me.
Yes, it makes a huge difference on the stock rom and froyo -- though honeycomb's soft buttons eliminate the need to do so.
Can't recommend remapping the keys enough. On froyo it makes a huge difference in functionality on. The device, life is a pain without it.
how do you remap the vol buttons? i would love to do it

I remapped.
I also recommend remapping your volume buttons. It's handy having tactile buttons for the back and menu functions.
What really sold me on remapping was that I didn't like to have a Softkeys button floating on the home screen. Without a floating button, I would have to double tap the hardware "N" button to bring up the Softkeys interface, then hit "menu" or "back." If I have to double tap a hardware button to use "menu" or "back," I might as well just remap those functions to the volume buttons and use a single tap.

I didn't find a definitive answer
I ran with the CM7 softkeys, Button Savior, remapped volume keys and I just finally settled on zMooth.

Camera Shutter/Volume Rocker Mod
(and Search softkey)
This is a low-level mod for now that effects the assignment globally!
Ok guys, this is something I have been wanting to get around to for a while.
Making the volume rocker act as camera shutter button. (or search softkey)
For me, it has always been a pain to try and reach around the screen and tap just the right spot in the stock camera app to snap off a shot.
There is a setting in many of the included Tweak apps to make the volume rocker act as the camera shutter, but this has never worked on our device and has yet to be implemented on any Thunderbolt rom I have come across.
So, while I look further into making this work the way I would prefer, I am posting these low-level mods for now.
Meaning, I want to make the volume rocker function as normal while camera is not in use and only be the shutter button when camera is active. This is gonna take me a little bit longer to accomplish through the editing of the camera.apk smali files. I do have a decent start on it, but nothing I would post as of yet.
With all of that said, here is my simple mod for now.
****THIS WILL DISABLE THE VOLUME UP OR DOWN ROCKER FUNCTION,
DEPENDING ON WHICH MOD YOU FLASH!!
SO TO ADJUST THE VOLUME TAP THE VOLUME UP OR DOWN,
WHICHEVER ONE YOU DID NOT CHANGE, THEN JUST ADJUST THE VOLUME WITH THE ON SCREEN SLIDER BAR.
You may prefer the volume up mod. As most people are more in a hurry to adjust the volume down, then they are to turn it up.
If this mod doesn't suit you, due to the disabling of one option or another, I understand.
But there may be those who are willing to sacrifice up or down, or the search button to be able to have a dedicated button for snapping shots.
THIS ZIP WILL REPLACE THE VOLUME UP WITH CAMERA
LONG PRESS TO START CAMERA APP, THEN TAP TO TAKE PICS OR START RECORDING VIDEO
THIS ZIP WILL REPLACE THE VOLUME DOWN WITH CAMERA
LONG PRESS TO START CAMERA APP, THEN TAP TO TAKE PICS OR START RECORDING VIDEO
THIS ZIP WILL REPLACE THE SEARCH SOFTKEY WITH CAMERA
LONG PRESS TO START CAMERA APP, THEN TAP TO TAKE PICS OR START RECORDING VIDEO
THIS ZIP WILL RESTORE YOU BACK TO STOCK
IF YOU DECIDE YOU DON'T LIKE IT
INSTALL:
Just flash the zip for desired mod in Recovery and reboot.
User feedback is always welcome!!...............and maybe a Thanks if you decide to use it
Updated all .zip files
UPDATED ALL .zips and tested!
All should be working as intended and full flashable now, sorry for any confusion!

The links were working just fine.
It appears as though the file host decided to go down right after.
All links updated to my Dropbox, since the DevHost went down.
Should all be good to go, once again!
Thank you for this!!!!

You're most welcome.
Not sure why we didn't have this or something better sooner for the stock camera on our Thunderbolts..
I much prefer a dedicated button for it.
Glad you find it of use as well and thanks for leaving a response.
Hey guys, i have a captivate and im running ICS AOKP with nova launcher prime. My power button is near broken. It always sticks and requires multiple presses before a response. Is there a way to open power options (you know, it brings up the shutdown, airplane mode and reboot options) without pressing the actual power button with nova launcher or a google play app?
Eh...
I dont know of anything. That darn power button is a problem for SOO soo many people. However, something that may help you is going into setting, go to display, and hit volume rocker wake. This will allow you to wake up the device by pressing the volume buttons. Also, if you need to go into reboot options, try rom manager. You can access recovery from there. This is the easiest method I have heard about this issue.
Thanks for your advice. To be more specific, i wanted to be able to shutdown when i wanted. I had forgotten about the rom manager thing.
Also, something cool: If you use Nova launcher, you can change a setting to make the phone wake with the vol up/down. Also, if you buy the donate version and pair it with the app "screen off and lock", you can sleep and lock your device by tapping anywhere on the home screen twice. Its really nifty. Doing that makes you not even need to press the power button anymore....except when you want to shutdown, restart, or take a screenshot.

There are several roms floating around in the development section that have extended toggles. Usually this feature has reboot, recovery, and power off as options. I can't say which (if any) of the ICS roms have the extended power menu.
I can also say that MIUI's standard toggles have reboot and power on it.
Could you use QuickBoot for rebooting options?
Use my latest ROM
It has Search button remapped as Power. Both short and long press work!
I don't even use Power button anymore - Volume buttons to wake up!
Additional bonus - Search now works as Camera shutter!
ROM is in my sig.
I didn't find anything with the search function, so here it goes:
Whenever you're on the homescreen with your One, and use the volume keys, normally my ringtone/notification volume changes, and I can make the phone go to silent/vibrate mode. If I played a game or used an other sound-using app, close it, and go back to the homescreen and try to change the volume again, it changes the media volumes. It's almost as if the audio process is still running and the One thinks it needs to change the media volume instead of ringtone/notification volume.
Is anyone else experiencing the same problem? (Or is it a feature, and if so, how can change/fix it?)
Thanks

Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds (you will see the back/home buttons flash and a countdown) and it will do a full restart.
Cool... Someone is making an inquiry about operation of the volume button and you suggested a restart sequence?
Anyways! Try pressing once the volume button. A mini volume window should pop up there should be a button on the right corner. Pressing it will direct you to the complete volume settings window.

Thanks for your reply. Your solution is not exactly what I meant, first of all there is no button on the right corner when changing the media volume. Only when changing the notification/ringtone volume. Second of all I'm not sure I explained well enough what the problem is, so I'll try again:
Situation: A fresh rebooot. When you are on your home screen and change the volume, you'll change the volume of your notifications and ringtone. This is what I want and works fine, when you put the volume all the way down it will go to vibrate mode, or silent mode. Perfect.
Now when I played a few games or listened to some music, closed those apps and I am back on the homescreen. I change the volume with the volume keys but instead of changing the notification and ringtone volume I change the media volume. I can't set my One to vibrate or silent using the volume keys now. This is not what I want, since I want the behaviour as I described earlier.
If I now go to settings -> Sounds -> Volumes I can ofcourse change the volumes I want, but this is more actions than I want to, and apparently isn't necessary as well. Change the ringtone volume there, then going back to the homescreen and using volume keys again, it still changes the media volume, again, this is not what I want.
So the problem is that after playing games/music the volume keys won't revert back to changing the notification/ringtone sounds but in stead keeps changing the media keys.

Doesn't happen here. do you have an exact sequence of which games/music apps you have been using? It possible that one of them is not closing down properly, have you tried going to the app manager and seeing which programs are running then force closing possible culprits until you find which is giving the problem?

After trying to find the problem for a week I haven't come across an particular app or sequence before it happens. Force closing every possible running app that uses audio also doesn't revert back to notification sound changing. I'm out of ideas for now..
Yeah doesn't happen to me either and i'm on firmware 1.28 stock and urooted.
It's a feature not a bug

I've seen the same issue with my Moto X now a year later. For me, the only fix has been the same that's referenced above--to go to the recent apps menu and swipe away the app that initiated the switch to controlling media volume as opposed to ringtone volume. Seems to work pretty well for me.
App is still active
Hey, I was having the exact same problem. It just started recently and I just figured it was because of a game (Real Racing 3). Even though I wasn't in the game, I guess it was still active in memory and keeping hold of the media output. I killed the app and my ringtone volume buttons work normally now.
Is there a mod to enable this on stock rom? Thats pretty much the only thing I'm missing from custom roms, along with customizing the quick settings tiles.
Download "All in one gesture"

Works really well. Under hard keys, just define volume+ button as volume+ (as it normally is) then it gives you an option for long press choose media control and it has an option for next track. Do the same for volume-
