[Q] Test drive Moto X?

Hey gang, I've got a bit of a conundrum here.
I'm the lucky owner of a Nexus 5 and it's a terrific phone. Problem is, my first love was the Moto X. I went with the N5 because it was cheaper off-contract as I currently have NET10. I'm still a little bummed that I didn't get the Moto X and I'm sure it'd be easy to trade the N5 for one but first I'd really like to try one out. Are there any good carriers out there that I can pick up a Moto X from and test drive it for a bit and then return it without taking too much of a financial hit? Carrier doesn't really matter, I want to test out the phone itself, not the service.
Ideally, the phone would be perfect for me and I would be able to trade someone's upgrade for a brand new Moto X from motomaker. Know of any reputable places where people trade phone upgrades?

I had the Nexus 5 first, then got the moto x. Quickly fell in love with it and returned the N5.
I went thru 4 devices in the past few months and the only one I paid any sort of restocking fee was the Note 3.
If I were you, go to a radioshack and grab a moto x on a new line with a new carrier, try it out.
I know you will like it. its like your Nexus only better in the hand, with older software, and extra features.

with the new generation of the moto x being released, are there any discounts or coupon codes for the first generation moto x through motomaker?

I ran through the questionnaire and it offered me $60 for mine. Needless to say when you can get 3 times that much for just the screen that's not a very good offer.
I'd wait a while. I'm sure something better will be offered.
I am on Republic Wireless. They have always sold the Moto X for $299 off contract but they won't have it as early as other carriers due to their hybrid WiFi/cell ROM, which takes some extra time to roll out. If you want inexpensive service ($40/mo. is their most expensive plan) and are willing to do your own tech support you may want to consider them.
There are caveats to consider. So search the site for "caveats" and you will see what they are.

Probably, but too late, I already preordered the new Moto G. I'm interested in that dual speakers. It'll make a good backup device.

I'm also waiting for discounts! I don't like that they made the new Moto X big so I'm sticking with the old one!

I think all the discounts were the ones already run the last few months. It sounds like many configurations of the original X (TOX?) are already sold out. I think they have been doing pretty decent inventory control for a while in anticipation of the changeover. I could be wrong, but a huge fire sale on large volume would surprise me. I know configurations, such as 64 GB, for some services are already sold out.

[Q] Moto X 1st Gen vs Moto G 2nd Gen

I have had my Moto X for just over a year and love it. Unfortunately, the other day I dropped it and cracked the screen. The $175 for Moto to fix it seems a bit steep to me. I have currently reverted to my Galaxy S2 (cm11) and am missing my Moto X. Even though I love my Moto X, it seems like a rip off to spend more to fix it then I did to buy it (on contract of course). I was wondering how the new Moto G stacked up to the original Moto X? Are there any other phones that could be had for around the price of the repair that would be comparable to the Moto X? Finally, I think I already know the answer to this, but has anybody had success repairing the Moto X screen themselves with a cheap glass replacement?

if you can wait the moto x 2nd gen is 200 on contract. unless your not on a contract disregard anything i just said.

There aren't too many changes between the first and second gen Moto G, apart from the screen and camera. If you can find a phone with 1.5-2GB of RAM, go for it. I kind of feel now that 1GB of RAM is just not enough for an Android phone.

That's exactly why it feels like such a rip off to pay $175 to fix my original Moto X. Unfortunately I have another year to wait until I can get the on contract price. Don't think I can last a year with the Galaxy S2. Among other things, like no 4g on cm11, the battery life is not very good, especially compared to the Moto X. The camera is also pretty lousy, especially in low light. I was just wondering if it was still a good investment to spend nearly $200 to get a year old phone that didn't have top of the line specs when it was new. Like I previously stated, I do love the phone, just seems like the repair should probably be a bit cheaper. Really, the state of cell phone screens is pretty sad. As a teacher who collects cell phones everyday, 90% of them have broken screens. Either the screens need to be more durable or the repairs need to be cheaper!

Moto won't fix it for free? Was this your first time breaking it? Why is Moto charging you $115 to fix it?

if itis out of warranty which i believe is 1 year and no water damage present thats what they charge but im not certain on the whole thing.

Check with moto - they are doing a one-time free screen replace on the Moto maker X if you talk nice to the help line person.
It sounds like you are stuck in contract - I'm not sure with which provider - but I just bought my wife a Moto G (1st gen 16 GB) because her Photon Q was dying and I am using the T-mobile pay-off to get her out of her Sprint contract. With the carrier-agnostic phone, if T-mo doesn't work in the first few months, I'll change her to an ATT MVO. Since her Sprint data was so poor, she won't even notice not having LTE for now. The Moto G could get you a new decent phone very cheap at the moment and either get you out of your contract or buy you time until your contract is up.

you will definitely notice the slowdowns of the moto g. I say use the 14 day return policy to your advantage.

Alright XDA community. I'm looking for some advice. I'm currently on-contract with VZW with a 2013 Moto X and I've loved it from day one.* I love the near AOSP experience. I've also enjoyed root since JCASE dropped his first exploit. It's not a developer edition phone and the only thing I really use root access for is TiBU for freezing carrier apps and performing data backup. I had great intentions for Tasker, but don't use it actively. I have made a few customizations using Xposed. I have been living with a cracked screen for about a year because the digitizer wasn't affected, but I'm finally tired of it. I want an unbroken screen. I do carry the VZW insurance and can get a new phone for $100 without affecting my contract terms. However, I've heard the replacement phones are the Moto X 2014. The only issue is that I will lose root access. My contract is up in October 2015. I'm not real thrilled with any of the new flagships right now. I welcome all advice.
Options I see:
-Keep current phone until October, then upgrade to new phone (Galaxy, LG, something else?) I may drop VZW insurance for third party though.
-Get replacement Moto X 2014. Come October, I could still upgrade and sell the lightly used Moto X 2014, right?

phone insurance is a scam, I never do it. you pay $7/month for something you would only need in a rare situation, and even when you do use, there is a deductible - much better going with a used phone off e-bay or swappa.
my advice, cancel the insurance, and see if you can spend $50 to fix the screen. I highly recommend swappa - as you can get a rooted Moto X 2014 from there.
If you get a phone from outside of VZW, then you will not be bound to their contract terms.

VZ Moto Maker Moto X (2014) - Motocare Question

I think I accidentally damaged my custom, leather, 32 Gb VZ Moto X last night by showering it with a hose. Luckily I bought Motocare last year when I bought the phone. I'm really pissed about not getting a new update for my phone even though its only a year old. What are the chances I'm able to trade in my phone and get a Droid Turbo or Nexus 6? What about a Moto X Pure? I'd offer to pay the premium, of course. It shouldnt be that much - if I did my math correctly it should only be $100 for a Moto X Pure.
Has anyone tried complaining their way into a different phone with VZ or Motorola? I'm really annoyed about this. I bought the phone for quick updates. I'm done with Android after this.
