[Q] Firmware Backup via PC Companion - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've posted this in the support forums over at Sony but am not sure how often they are visited so I thought I would repost it here.
Just purchased the C6906 and notice that the firmware it arrived with is 14.4.A.0.108 (Android 4.4.4).
I've installed PC Companion and both the app and the phone have notified me of an available update. The phone itself is reporting the update to be 14.4.A.0.108 (approx. 2mb's in size) which makes no sense to me since it's already installed on the phone. PC Companion has identified and apparently downloaded the available update as 14.5.A.0.242 (Android 5.0.2).
I've noted that there are a series of steps that PC Companion performs as part of the update procedure. I cancelled the procedure prior to the start of the third step which appears to be the actual flashing of the firmware because I wanted to check the forums here and at XDA for opinions of its stability.
Feelings on the new firmware tend to be mixed overall and that has caused me some concern, and I've yet to find the C6906 variant of the firmware the phone currently has installed (14.4.A.0.108) in the event I want to rollback. The fact that this particular firmware is reportedly easy to root appeals to me since I root all of my android devices.
My question is this: I've done the research and found that PC Companion backs up firmware before updating the phone, placing the necessary files in a folder labelled "blob_fs". But what isn't spelled out is whether this folder contains a copy of the device's existing 14.4.A.0.108 firmware or a copy of the newly downloaded 14.5.A.0.242 firmware which I cannot seem to locate on my computer. Does PC Companion push it to the phone at some point during the procedure? If so would a factory reset or a repair done thru PC Companion eliminate the update file from the phone? Or would either of the aforementioned options merely wipe the phone and then install the new update?

[Q] Problem installing latest 4.3 build (10.4.B.0.569)

Hi, I would like to post a request of solution to a problem faced by a number of Xperia Z series devices users out there. For the latest 4.3 build (10.4.B.0.569) from SONY, the OTA update could not be installed despite being able to be downloaded successfully. The file size is 318MB for my ZL. Once completed the download the phone will reboot itself into its recovery and soon after a few seconds it reboots itself and give an undismissable notification of "could not install". As reconfirmed with other users, root does not seem to be the problem. No official comment was given and close to none from XDA. Could anyone please help with poor users affected by this issue?

I'm not sure, but I think it's the CWM or TWRP, perhaps it's the boot.img ... don't know.... To update to newest FW follow this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565850

Am using stock recovery...….so don't think it is related to the recovery...
u said u did it ota so umm have u tried via pc companion to update ure phone ?
if youre not rooted may i suggest using pc companion or flashing the ftf via sony ericson flasher (sony rom ) required to update the phone
Beside you can also use EMMA, but think this will reset your phone to factory defaults.
For my phone it installed an older build (0.244) and then I was able to get the latest FW by OTA.

[Q] Problems Downgrading to 4.1.2

Following a number of guides I decided to downgrade to 4.1.2. I backed everything up using PC Companion and flashed the genereic uk 4.1.2 firmware.
when i tried restoring my backup only the photos appeared to restore. I decided to try a factory reset to see if that helped - no joy. I used the sony update service tool and it installed 4.1.2. but still no joy with the restore.
If i type in and call someone that would have been in my contacts list, their name does appear on the call log, so its almost as though the contacts are on my phone, just not in my contacts list.
Also now that I've rolled back to 4.1.2, both my phone and PC Companion recognise this as the most recent update. Does this mean when the 4.3 update comes out, i will have to wait for someone to post the firmware and flash it via flashtool rather than update via pc companion?
Thanks!
The backup you made will only work on android 4.3, root android 4.1 and flash android 4.3 ftf for keeping root, then restore your backup and create a new one using titanium backup(make sure you change the destination folder to a folder in your sd because flashing will format your internal memory) then flash android 4.1, root it and restore the titanium backup
Ah makes sense.
Thanks for the reply. Have you seen anywhere for 4.3 generic uk?
I can only find generic global.

[Q] Need Help in regards to Updating my device to Lollipop early.

So my device is currently with Telstra and they are real slack with their update releases and tend to have a fair bit of bloatware on their devices.
I obviously have the xperia z3 compact and really want to put the official android 5 release on it.
I have a few questions/statements down below:
1. Can I install the software without unlocking the bootloader?
2. I don't want to loose camera functionality or DRM keys (just don't want faults or bugs like this.). - Anymore info on this?
3. Can I just root to install the software?
4. Is there anyway what so ever that is safe, where I can install the official Version without a carrier? (Australian Radio)
to install lollipop on your phone you don't need to root your phone, unlock the bootloader or worry about drm,
all you need is XperiFirm and Flashtool
basically what you need to do is this
1. download the two apps i've listed above
2. use xperifirm to download the proper firmware for your phone [since you're in Australia and you want a carrier free version, that would be the customized AU version for the d5833].
3. run flashtool, wait for it to load and then click tools -> bundles -> create, and then select the folder where you saved the downloaded firmware to.
4. select the device from the device list [by double clicking the text box], fill in the branding and version details in accordance with the firmware version you've downloaded, select all the files listed under 'folder list' and add them to the 'firmware content' by clicking the right arrow, click 'create'.
5. once flashtool has finished creating the ftf file, click on 'flash device' [the thunder icon] and select 'flash mode', select the firmware you've created.
6. if you want to keep your data make sure to uncheck 'DATA' from the wipe section and then click on flash.
7. you'll be prompted to connect your phone in flashmode, to do that power off your phone and connect it to the pc via usb WHILE holding the volume down button.
8. flashtool should then start the flashing process, once it's done reboot your phone and wait for it to load.
good luck

I thought you need to unlock the bootloader to use flashtool?
nope, you can use flashtool with a locked bootloader [exactly as i have done when i installed the nordic combined lollipop instead of my unbranded uk kitkat]

yup, haven't encountered any bugs or anything that would make me hate lollipop in particular,
been using flashtool on a locked bootloader phone since my first xperia lww phone, it's all too simple

Sweet, its just because I saw this on the Sony site, first paragraph, 5th line.
http://developer.sonymobile.com/services/flash-tool/
there's a difference between the flashtool i have linked you with [in my first reply] and sony emma,
it's possible that emma requires an unlocked bootloader, but when you got a tool that does the same without unlocking the bootloader, why bother?

What is going on with Huawei and software updates?

I have a SIM free UK P9. Early on in its life it received updates happily but I have still not received Nougat and I'm still on the September 2016 Security Patch from Google. I've never rooted or tampered with the device, so where are my updates? Are Huawei simply too busy with other phones to bother updating flagships from only last year?
It is unacceptable to me that a £450 device from a manufacturer purportedly looking to compete with the big guns in the premium phone space cannot be bothered to keep its older handsets up to date. How is a user supposed to put his trust in a company when they seem to forget about their older devices once newer ones are released onto the market?
Meanwhile a friend of mine with a SIM free Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (!) has June's security patches.
Small wonder people don't take Huawei seriously. This P9 is a lovely device with great battery life and is still (for my usage) an excellent handset; however I will not be buying another Huawei until I am confident that they are willing to maintain support for older devices. So far it seems that some people in different parts of the world on various carriers *do* get updates (or at least have more recent ones) but Huawei seem incapable of rolling them out consistently and across the board.
Disappointing.
Anyone else have any thoughts on this? I don't wish to put Huawei down too much as I think they bring some interesting things to the market but one of my biggest bugbears is where manufacturers forget that after-sales support and updates are some of the things that contribute to people's perception of a company. Might as well just buy Doogees and Vernees off Banggood without it.
Don't wait huawei to send update, use firmware finder from play store,or dload method,or hisuite method, all these methods are officially safe and keep your warranty. What your build number ?
Build number is EVA-L09C432B182.
I'm not really into flashing ROMs these days as i don't want to mess anything up. I don't want to flash firmware that isn't UK SIM free either, and if I haven't had that update OTA then I assume it simply hasn't been released.
I don't have a PC anyway as I sold my Surface Pro and now only have a MacBook.
Use firmware finder from play store, and firmware finder proxy,it is the easy way, only search for the rom u want and let your system update search for update by using proxy,if from MM to nougat u will not loose anything.
You'd have to guide me through that step by step as to be honest I don't entirely understand anything other than the bit about using something from the Play Store
OK so I worked this out. The only firmware it says is approved for my device is the next up on the list - EVAL09C432B330-LOG.
This downloads fine through the stock Huawei update menu (as if i am just doing a normal update) and the phone reboots but then the installation fails, whether I choose the full package or standard update option.

do you have a way to get the files from firmware finder onto your SD card? If so create a folder called DLOAD on the root directory and then put the update file in that folder. Power off the phone and hold all three buttons (power and vol+/-) until you get the firmware updating screen.
Let me know if it still fails.
Thanks. Will doing this cause any mismatches in future and stop me being able to receive OTA updates, or affect Android Pay?
I have put the update.zip in a folder called dload in the root of the SD but neither the boot method of installation nor the dialler method seems to find it. I've tried with a different update.zip with the same result

Who told u that??, incorrect my friend, extract the update.zip and put only update.app inside dlod folder in the root of your sd card,it is explain hunderds of time everywhere
Hi, this isn't all that clear in the other instructions I've read, and historically flashing update.zip from the root of an SD card is quite a typical way to flash software, so you can understand the confusion!
Are you sure this will work? Other threads online indicate that flashing is much more difficult than this and requires unlocking the bootloader. Am I missing something here?
I also tried this but failed on my phone. I put the update.app in the dload folder but always fails after about 14%

Just to let you know, after downloading a bazillion files and trying every method under the sun I finally got this to work. It is now running B386 firmware.
Using the manual update method didn't work for me; the steps I had to follow are as follows:
With Firmware Finder, choose the B386 full OTA package - check for compatibility first (it said mine was compatible with it) and choose to install via proxy. Set up your WiFi to run the localhost/8080 proxy settings as instructed by FF. While the file is downloading, remove the proxy settings from your WiFi, allow it to reconnect and continue the download.
I then just left the phone to its own thing. I was actually watching a video in the background when it rebooted itself and began the installation process, which didn't fail as I expected it to.
Everything seems to be running fine now.
Thanks to the person in this thread who suggested using Firmware Finder.

I was on B182. If you're on the exact same firmware as me then try the steps above exactly and you might have more luck. I also deleted all old downloaded update files before I commenced with it.
Thanks

Bought 2nd-hand XZ1C, update fail over and over

hi everyone,
i bought a 2nd-hand xz1c and it's been great but it had a custom rom installed and was rooted then reflashed with stock rom when i got it, that's what the seller said anyway but i can't get in touch with him anymore.
i haven't been able to update anything since i got it. the system downloads and fails to install the update over and over. i have no idea how to unroot the phone if that's possible or what programs to use to do it, is there a guide where i can just get it to stop downloading and trying to download the newer firmware? ideally i'd like to install the update, failing that just to get it to stop trying would be "ok"... probably not from a security point of view though.
i'm a complete noob sorry. ly
As the phone was rooted, the bootloader is unlocked and the OTA update will fail. It's impossible to relock the bootloader, so you'll have to manually flash the updates.
You can use a tool called xperifirm to download new firmware version and newflasher to flash them. Search the forum for guides.
To stop the updater from tryung, go to settings/apps, check show system apps, find the app called Software update and force stop it. It will restart on phone boot, so you'll have to close it again once in a while.
You can also use ADB to disable the updater for good - again, search the forum for a more specific guide...
If you really feel there is some sort of advantage to having the latest firmware on your phone, then upgrade it yourself, you won't damage the phone or change your warranty status.
Look on Xperiafirm and find a 47.2.A.10.62 customised build - CE1 would be a good option
Download Newflasher and put it in the same folder as the firmware you downloaded from Xperiafirm
Delete Userdataxxx.sin and files ending in .ta (but not in the boot folder) . This will ensure that you don't lose any personal data. Also delete persist*.sin to avoid losing android attest key.
Then start newflasher.exe and follow instrctions.
You might need a copy of the Sony driver
I would make a backup with Xperia transfer before you do anything, if the phone is glitchty after your rebuild, then factory reset it and then restore from the backup.
You'd probably need to read up on janjan's kernel fix to get you working without a green camera.
You'll also need TWRP
