Hi,
I have just purchased an HD7 and I really like it so far but I have a question regarding some screen distortion I am seeing when I scroll through menu's, apps, etc...
For example (and where it is most noticable although it does happen in other areas as well) when I go to the applications menu (where all apps are located to the right of the Windows screen) and I scroll through the apps from top to bottom, all the writing beside each app icon becomes so distorted while scrolling (almost static like) that you cannot even make out what the words are saying until the scrolling stops and then everything is ledgable again. Is this normal?
On my Galaxy S the scrolling does not affect the font / writing this way at all and even on my old Omnia i910 I dont remember seeing this type of distortion when scrolling.
If someone can please advise me on this I would really appreciate it. Is this normal for this device? Does yours do it? Anyway to fix it?
Thanks
yiannisthegreek
It's normal behaviour but I'm not sure of the cause. From what I've seen, this only happens when using the black theme. If you use the white theme it doesn't happen.

Thank You for the reply. Really? Hmmm... That is odd. I wonder if this will be something that will be fixed in updates perhaps?
I use a black theme and this doesn't happen to me at all. Certainly not to the point it's unreadable.

Hmmm... Now Im confused... One person says it happens to him and one says it does not.
Do you experience any distortion of the writing in apps, etc while scrolling? It is minimal when I scroll slowly but when I scroll fast it is quite noticable.
PS... I did also try the white theme and it does not do it in the white theme as was mentioned by the other poster... Only in the Black theme.
I guess I'm not sure what the deal is. When I'm scrolling fast, it could be a million dollar screen with perfect clarity and I STILL wouldn't be able to "read" what was there. I mean, I have 20-20 vision and am a pretty quick reader and I can barely read my chat log scrolling slowly. When scrolling fast enough to "distort" you would have to be able to read about 120 words per second (I scroll through three screens worth of text in less than a second, about 40 words per screen). That's 7200 words per minute which is darn near World Record Speed Reading (not counting those who skim most of it and lose a great deal of comprehension).
I'd just like to say that it's not a major issue for me, but it does happen. When scrolling the app list, the text does fade out, but I don't really see it as much of an issue as the items are moving so fast that you wouldn't be able to read the text at any rate. As the list is alphabetical, I know where I need to stop, I'm not reading the apps one by one as I go along.
I'm not sure now if the OP is experiencing a different issue but he did confirm, as I have, that it doesn't happen in the white theme.

@Shadowise,
Yes... This is what I am talking about and again Thank You for your answers. I also really notice this when using the People Live Tile and especially in the synced Facebook listing. The text DOES fade out and the smaller the text the more faded it seems to become. Again... This is in the Black theme.
Also, I have noticed while in the People "hub" when scrolling from side to side that the screen itself darkens / dims out while scrolling and it also DOES this in the White theme as well. Is this also normal behavior?
If your not sure what I am talking about then please go into the People tile and just hold your finger on the top of the screen (where it says people in big letters) and slowly slide your finger and you will see the screen darken / dim out as it scrolls - unless there is something wrong with MY device in which case you may not notice what I am talking about.
Please let me know if this happens to you and if this is normal as well. Again... my Android does NOT do these things and so I am not sure if this is normal behavior.
Thanks in advance...

My screen absolutely does not do this. The people tile actualy looks sharper than the apps screen, regardless of how fast I scroll. The screen does not dim out _at all_.
Black background.
It happens over here as well this is due to Motion Blur, the quality of screen used by HTC is poor and this is a known issue with the HTC HD7 and HTC Surround. HTC should have used a better screen specially for its flagship device on the Windows phone 7 platform. But i guess thats the main reason they didn't; the platform is new theres no need to increase costs for a niche emerging market.
Ok... I am confused again... One answer says that this absolutely DOES NOT happen to him and another answer says that it DOES... LOL!!!
This happens because of the 4.3" screen. It's not the best screen in the world. The 4.1" dell venue pro screen never exhibited this behavior and when I switched to the hd7 I noticed it immediately.
It's called response time, it's not fast enough as some other screen, basically it's more prominent while using black theme because it takes full response time (i.e. 8ms) for a pixel to change it colour from black to white and then to black again while you scrolling.

The funny thing is that the more I play with it the more I notice that this only really happens within the stock Microsoft OS apps like People, Zune, etc. When I scroll through other 3rd party apps such as Facebook (actual app and not the synced version in the People tab), FIM (Facebook Instant Messenger), among other 3rd party apps that this fade out / distortion does not take place.
Anyone else find the same?
EDIT... I have confirmed the fade out / screen distortion to again seemingly only to be affecting the Microsoft stock OS apps again after going into Marketplace, Office, (along with the others mentioned above). It does not seem to affect 3rd party apps... Facebook, FIM, Yellowpages, YouTube, etc.
Again... Anyone else find the same or can check?

Actually... I am talking about like 3/4 of the entire screen when scrolling from side to side in any Microsoft stock OS App.
Like I said in my previous post... if you go into say the People live tile and place your finger on the top portion of the screen where in big writing it says "people" and just slowly start to move your finger to scroll you will see the bottom half of the entire page / app dim out until you remove your finger or it completes its scroll.
As I said... it does this on my device in EVERY Microsoft STOCK OS app like People, Zune, Marketplace, XBOX Live, etc but in 3rd party apps it does NOT do this. This happens in WHITE theme as well.
To try and reproduce this please go to any Microsoft OS App like "people", press your finger at the top of the page and move your finger side to side in short movements and watch your screen. You should see the dimming effect unless my phone is defective or something.
Please tell me what you find.
i'm pretty sure this is not a bug or an issue, it's just intentional, and it's 100% a software thing, you can see that in many wp7 reviews...
but a different thing is the effect you see scrolling the applist, that one is related to the hd7 screen and you won't see it using, for example, an omnia7

Do you have an HD7? Can you confirm if your screen does the same "dim / fade out" thing in the Microsoft apps as I have described? Also... Why does it not do this in 3rd party apps then like youtube for example? I have even checked the HTC Hub app and in the HTC app store it does not fade / dim out but it sure does in the Microsoft Marketplace app. Weird.
As for the thing you mention about the app list and the screen - well that is my first big dissapointment with this phone. I have a Samsung Galaxy S and of course the SAMOLED is AWESOME but this phone is said to have the S-LCD (Super LCD) display which is supposed to be a pretty good screen too.
Well... I found a youtube link regarding the BLACK theme scrolling words distortion. Here it is...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RperdOR8y5g
But I have not found anything about the screen fade/dimming in Microsoft apps so I hope one of you out here can reproduce it and tell me my phone is ok (even though it will still kinda suck)... LOL!!!

Hi all, I've had this tablet for about 2 weeks now. Before I received it, I assumed that I would set up my home screens for landscape mode and go Tablet UI right away. But as time goes by I find myself using portrait mode a lot more, whether or not it be setting up my launcher or using apps (with the exception of watching videos, of course).
What do you prefer?

I use portrait mode for most thing but web browsing and videos. Its real nice having the option

Portrait is so much easier to type and see text with since there's more text listed than landscape. I also find it LOADS easier to type with my thumbs in portrait mode.
I'm finding the typing a lot easier as well with two thumbs and the ability to swipe as well.
I use landscape for videos, portrait for everything else
Portrait for almost everything except YouTube.
I am 50-50 so far. I like landscape for web surfing and videos, portrait for reading and replying to messages. I should find an alternative keyboard to make thumb typing a little easier.

Get on the SwiftKey Flow beta. It's great on this device in either mode. Just change it to separate thumb mode while in landscape.
I'm about 50 50. I like using landscape and with the 4.2 keyboard it's pretty easy to type... for me

With my iPad I use portrait all the time probably because its big and heavy but with my nexus 7 I use landscape for almost every thing. I think because its pretty small and I feel I get more on the screen that way, plus I get to see all of the wallpaper on my home screen too

Landscape 99% of the time here... I could never find any advantages of using it in portrait - folks say that it's easier to type, but the keyboard is much smaller in portrait mode, which makes it harder to type in my opinion (much easier to hit the wrong key by accident).
Very interesting that it seems most folks prefer portrait.
Of course my case caters to landscape mode too, so that may play a big part as to why I use landscape mode most of the time...

the problem in landscape mode is the navigation bar that the bar is always on front.
That reduces the screen and make it too small.
I would like to have the choice to put the navigation bar at the side in landscape mode.
Does it possible ?
I find in landscape you can't see much, when the keyboard pops up it takes most of the screen and is so hard to view and type at the same time.

I usually use apex (sometimes nova) launcher, when you keep it in landscape (or portrait) only, you can maximize the area available. But then youre not able to use the other way ...

the problem with apex is the portrait / lanscape compatibily.
you can have a big desktop on landscape but the icons will disappears when switching to the portrait mode.
That's very annoyoing and this fix should be a basic feature !!

Is there any launcher capable of having icons arranged differently in portrait and landscape modes?
90% portrait
Both

True, but N7 screen width in portrait mode is same size as ~4" phone landscape.
In landscape, I can't type comfortably, because I guess I have quite short fingers and my thumbs can't reach the keys in the middle of the screen.
I use it mostly in portrait (my homescreen is arranged for portrait), I also browse in portrait mostly, because of exact thing Apple was bashing N7 on their iPad mini release (those extra pixels on iPad mini) - there's too much stuff on top and bottom, making visual area small (in chrome you can't hide address bar, like on stock phone ICS browser (it hides automatically when you scroll down the web site).
I find it more comfortable to hold in portrait, and it's easier to read stuff too (books are portrait after all).
I use landscape for videos and games (and stupid new skype).

Both ways but I guess its in Portrait most often.
This is something I haven't seen before. I just got a Nexus 6, and on the first day I had it, I poked around on the phone with the OOB configuration, and chrome did work in landscape. Videos would be full screen, etc. Since then, I have:
Upgraded to 5.0.1
Rooted the phone
Removed the encryption
Changed the dpi to 493 with textdroider
Replaced the google launcher with Nova
Set the desktop grid to 8x7
Now, if I switch the chrome into landscape mode, the page takes up the whole screen for about a second, but then half of the screen becomes black, like there is an overlay over it. It cuts off the bottom half of the page. This happens when playing full screen videos in chrome too. Everything else on the phone, including the desktop.
I put the dpi back to its original value, but that didn't matter, so I changed it back. I've also set the desktop grid in Nova back to its original settings, which also didn't matter. I tried using chrome beta, but it has the same issue. Has anyone experienced this before? I haven't found any other examples of this. I tried to take a screenshot to post here, but the screenshot came out looking normal.
Fixed it.
Setting the DPI back to 560 fixed the issue. It must just not like the 493. I tried 520, but that didn't work either. I'm going to try 480 now, since 493 looked pretty nice.

Change lcd density to 560 in /system/build.prop, save changes, exit, and then reboot. 520 was the closest I've found that was free of issues but chrome would still have that issue in landscape with side buttons down. In landscape with side buttons up, however, chrome works fine in landscape in 520. I'm sure other values will provide the same but it seems other apps get affected.
480 was a no-go
Nope, issue persists on 480 too. Guess I'm going to be stuck at 560 until this is figured out.

460 DPI seems to work for me. I had issues with 480 and other DPI I tried as well. Seems hit or miss at certain settings.
460 works fine. I started at 480 and had half black screen as well.
I have been fiddling with different settings and 498 was the lowest/smallest I have been able to get with out any issues what so ever. With other numbers that I have seen seem to work but then I always end up with letters in the keyboard being cut off from the pop-up when I tap them. I don't know much about how the screen works and how scaling works to figure it out which DPI's will work with out any issues.
493 dpi over here.
I experience half black screen bug in landscape when i rotate my phone in such way that my power/volume buttons are on the buttom of the phone and if the keyboard is not present.
if I rotate the phone in proper direction, meaning, when the phone is in a landscape position and my power/volume buttons are located at the top of the phone, bug isn't present.
if keyboard is present and the phone is in landscape mode( power/volume buttons on the bottom) position results in keyboard flashing/constantly trying to redraw itself every time I press on keyboard.
Black overlay bug is system wide for me, not just in chrome(also present in other browsers, message app, file manager, etc), so I think the bug lies in Google Keyboard not liking 493dpi in landscape.
{ I'm as well, removed the encryption, root'ed, 5.0.2(AOSP, LRX22G, Pure Shamu) with Nova(12x7 grid) as default launcher. }
I just wanted to let you know that this issue seems to be resolved on Android 6 / Marshmallow.
I'm now able to set the density to 384dpi without getting the infamous half black screen in landscape mode (when the phone is rotated clockwise).
FYI: 384dpi is the highest value possible to keep the UI in tablet mode (including 4-way screen rotation, etc). From 385dpi up the UI switches to phone mode.

I've once seen a vertical line in landscape mode, not in portrait. I terminated the app and it was fine after. I think it's related to the bigger graphical glitche where half the screen freezes. On mine actually, that line was cut out and then displayed somewhere else on the screen, on another line.

Also experiencing pixel line
I think it's something to do with Netflix as well. No other apps, and restarting works. Killing the app by swiping it out of recent apps does not work.
Can't see a pixel line on mine in any app. Running stock rooted themed with minimal mods.
Does anyone have the issue where landscape mode zooms in too much? It happens in games, YouTube on chrome, and in the YouTube app sometimes. Any fix for this?
Edit: the fix for the YouTube app is to pinch inwards to view original instead of fill, but that doesn't help with games or videos in chrome
Are you using guesters?
I have had this issue with Facebook lite in messages I had to tap reply further up to fix it
It is odd that this is the first time noticimg this maybe because q was built more for guestures control I noticed it after turning off guesters and moving back to the soft buttons the guestures was too unreliable even on the lowest sensitivity.

I am using gesture navigation. Turning it off doesn't fix YouTube's fill on chrome. But it does seem to fix it in one of my games. I honestly prefer gesture navigation though.
