[Q] Wierd 4.4.4 to 5.0.1 Update Issue - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am trying to update my Note 4 OTA and am running into an issue..
Both my phone and SD card are encrypted. My phone is stock. Previous updates I have done via Samsung Kies.
When I update it, it downloads the package and goes through the reboot sequence. When it starts the update process, it gets to about 2% and then says that the update failed and reboots and restores the previous settings. If I try to update via Kies, it goes through all of the screens and when I click the OK on the screen that says to not try to use the phone during the update, it just goes off into lala land and doesn't do anything at all..
Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be going on?
Thank you for your assistance.

Do you have reactivation lock enabled
BAD ASS NOTE 4

No. Reactivation lock is disabled. I verified it just in case, I have never used the feature.

I dunno man. By encrypted what do you mean. Knox or ????
BAD ASS NOTE 4

No. I mean I used the on-board encryption tool to encrypt the SD card and the internal phone storage. In the Security settings. I encrypted the device and the external SD card.

U might want ask a dev. U might get faster answer

Have you tried to Odin the update?

You will need to disable the encryption before going forward. The encryption is doing what it's supposed to do; preventing writing new code.

Will I be able to decrypt it without losing the data?

Disabling the encryption was the answer. I did not lose any data.
I would like to thank everyone for their assistance.

[Q] Rooted Moto X, OTA update today causing boot loop

Hi, I used PwnMyMoto-1.4.3-TMobile.apk to get root on my T-mobile Moto X.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2444957
Today, there was an OTA update that downloaded and said it would install. Now the phone is stuck in a boot loop. It boots OK but about 45 seconds after loading it shuts down and reboots. I'm guessing its because the PwnMyMoto removed the stock recovery or altered it to be unable to install the OTA update. However I guess the phone still sees the downloaded OTA update and wants to install it, so it reboots the phone to try to install.
I can't post in the PwnMyMoto thread because I'm too new to XDA
I have froze the ota apk to try to prevent this
small update. I used the T-mobile bundle here to get stock recovery.img and put that on my phone (because PwnMyMoto removes it) and then the OTA update installed. I guess instead I could have removed the downloaded update if I knew where it was!! After the OTA I lost root

Freezing a particular app can be done using Titanium Backup. Its available for download on play store. Titanium Backup requires root permissions. Freezing an app will leave the app on your phone but it wont work cuz its frozen lol... the app wont be uninstalled. this way if you decide later that you need the app then you can just unfreeze it and use it.
OK, I have TB and I know it supports freeze. I didn't realize you could freeze the OTA capability as a separate program. However given that I already downloaded the update, its too late to freeze.

sorry if i or many people would have seeen this earlier we could have stopped you. Always be patient next time because you may have lost root forever now. Not that we know a patch will come through to allow us to maintain root in 4.3, but jcase said he proabbly wouldn't make a rot for 4.3 because it could be a pain and he doens't want to waste any of the exploits he knows of. You could always figure out a way your phone is bad and go exchange it and root again and don't take OTA until someone has figured out something to do to maintain root. It would be worth it for me.
You always have the option to unlock your bootloader with the T-Mobile version. I plan on unlocking the Dev edition I will be buying and then buying a SquareTrade warranty and that will cover any issues I might ever have including breaking/water damage.

Yup I almost unlocked the boot loader but instead I was able to flash stock recovery. I wish android itself was smart enough to not try to install OTA when recovery was gone. I finally read through the jcase thread and I think I might have been able to delete the downloaded OTA by running:
Code:
fastboot erase cache
fastboot erase userdata
But I didn't try that. I also don't know what exactly that would have erased.
I will certainly look into a SquareTrade warranty!
Argh, I'm having the same problem. I have a Sprint version with unlocked bootloader and PwnMyMoto 1.1. Began after OTA update today. I have about 20 seconds after booting up that I'm able to do things on the phone before it goes into a loop; I've tried uninstalling the camera and disabling the gallery, which I thought were the two things that were updated. Safe mode doesn't work, nor does trying to enter recovery through fastboot. I've even tried factory resetting the phone from settings, but it can't do this before the power-down process begins. I haven't had any success with working through adb and the command prompt on this phone (device not found). At this point, I'm SOL and out of ideas with a bricked phone. Any other ideas?
UPDATE... Tried the fastboot erase cache & userdata; essentially performed a hard reset of device. Not the most convenient thing, but at least I have a working phone now.
so if we freeze updater and ota, we should be covered?
not sure about the other suspect apk with is fota.apk. I rename otacerts.apk as well. I may be a little paranoid about this but bricking is definitely not an option

Yeah, root is great... I guess I'll just have to keep fingers crossed that jcase works on 4.2.2 post OTA but since it hasn't even been pushed to all carriers maybe it won't happen. Yes, I should have NOT gotten the OTA, but once it had downloaded my phone was totally unusable until I restored recovery and it installed itself.

I did try rooting again using PwnMyMoto-1.4.3-TMobile.apk but it failed to install (since one of the exploits it used is patched)
I have t-Mobile but how would I get to the cache? My phone would boot for about 45 seconds and in that time-frame I could adb shell into the phone but could not find the path for the OTA update. Do you mean it would be in /cache/some-build/ or so?
Yes in cache and you would have to attempt from a PC , which might not have been possible because the phone kept rebooting. Also I am sry for your loss
Would ota root keeper do anything for us?

Erk, after getting into the same post-Root update loop, I flashed back to stock using the recipe here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=46175635&postcount=8
I now have 13.9.0Q2.X-116-X-17-51 installed.
When I go to System updates to update to the OTA update 13.0Q2.X-116-X-17-54, I get told that I am already updated to the latest version.
Any help would be much appreciated!

You have to make sure you have downloaded & installed the Android SDK and the latest Motorola Android drivers to your computer. On your phone, shut it down before it has the chance to re-enter the boot loop cycle. Then press the down button simultaneously with the power button for a few seconds and release the down button a split second before releasing the power button. This enters the bootloader (you may have to try it a few times to get it). Plug your phone into the computer and open a command prompt on the computer; type "fastboot erase cache", hit enter, type " fastboot erase userdata" and hit enter. You'll see confirmation in the command prompt and your phone will reboot as factory reset.

Phone Encryption FYI

4.4 KitKat still has the same bug as previous releases as far as encrypting the phone goes. I had to attempt the process 4 times before the phone would actually encrypt. The first 3 times the Green Android popped up, but the phone didn't reboot to the "Encrypting Phone..." progress screen, it just went back to the lock screen. 4th time was a charm, so keep trying if it doesn't work for you.

You using a custom recovery or stock?
Mine encrypted on the first try ...
Encrypting naturally makes the phone a tad bit slow though no? And to decrypt you have to do factory reset

Yes, rooted only, but no other changes.
I've never had a problem encrypting with any recovery (CWM, TWRP, or stock), probably because it never boots to recovery while encrypting. It's probably a ROM issue.
Hey guys,
did you notice any significant performance impact after encrypting your N5?
How does an (stock) update work on encrypted N5? Do I have to wipe the phone prior to any update?
Just so you guys know there is a bug with kitkat encryption that will wipe your entire phone. Make backups of all the data you're keeping on your phone if you're going to encrypt. There's been a few users that have reported loosing everything due to encryption wiping out their phones. Just a friendly warning to whoever wants to encrypt.
Encryption does not slow down the performance. Only boots up slightly slower. Once you go through the password or pin, everything is decrypted until you lock your phone again.
I remember once you encrypt though...can't decrypt or need to reinstall stock.

my n5 was very picky about which cable and charger I was using before it would start the encryption process, with a N7 and a asus T100, it was hard to figure out which charger goes with which device.
Haven't noticed any particular slowdown since encrypting, except at boot.
The only thing I hated was not being able to use pattern unlock, using a PIN sucks. I worked around that by making a twrp backup right before the encryption process, change the security to PIN so encryption will work, then once it's done, boot into TWRP (which makes you enter the PIN to read inside the encrypted container), then restore the backup without wiping. So now I have a good length pin at bootup or entering twrp, pattern unlock for daily use. Maybe trading a little bit of security for convenience, but entering a 10+ character pin multiple times per day just isn't very usable.
I think it's the battery. The os shows another percentage than the recovery calculates. After some additional minutes of charging i hadn't that problem anymore. Thats just my opinion
I know that it is not possible to decrypt the data and that a factory reset is necessary to remove encryption.
I am just wondering if I can still update my system if I encrypt my phone?
What exactly is encrypted? Only /data?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Encryption does not affect the OTA update or any kind of updates that push out offically. Phone itself decrypts once you go through personal lock screen. Since you can only update during unlocked stage, you won't have problem updating. It does encrypt everything except the media files such as videos, music's and etc. Correct me if I'm wrong though...

Ye when your phone running custom recovery, rom and kernel doesn't behave as intended, it's obviously Google's fault...
Seriously, if you change anything software related, you lose the right to blame the manufacturer.
I've heard of random passwords being generated so the user has to factory reset. Is this true????

Encrypting the SD card, doesn't secure the data

I'm using the SM-T710 variant.
When I've encrypted the SD (Transend 32GB) card, I get confirmation it's been encrypted. I see the progress bar etc as it encrypts the files on the card.
But, if I put the card in a card reader and connect it to my PC, all the files on the card are visible and editable.
If I put the card in my Note 4, it thinks the card is encrypted.
The tablet is rooted stock ROM 6.01 MM, with Xposed and other Mods installed.
But, even disabling them and rebooting doesn't help.
Is there a fix, without wiping the tablet and trying again?
Thank you
Hi has anyone found a solution to the issue of SD card encryption? I've been trying to resolve this all weekend. Used multiple cards and tried formatting them, charging tablet to 100% and doing encryption. All claim to have worked but I can read the card and all files when I put in a SD card reader and connect to PC. Will probably return the tablet and pick up an iPad if this is an issue that cannot be resolved..

Then there's not much to suggest except to format the sd card and factory reset.
I had to do this to get internal encryption working on 2 other devices.
Even though it seemed successful it wasn't until I did the above.

Anybody find any major bugs?

I had lag and touch sensitivity issues and I upgraded my white note4 dash cam from 4.4.4 to 6.0.1. Factory reset fixed it. I am going to set my white note4 up as close to daily driver as possible and run with it a few days before I upgrade my black note4. In the meantime anything to report? I haven't run into issues. How is reception? Does it still connect to hspa+ when LTE signal is fine or low? Still have 5.1.1 bug where outgoing calls couldn't be made occasionally but receive was fine until reboot?
Everything is good for me.
To anyone that is experiencing problems.
Before you complain that MM is jacked up please try and do a full wipe. (System, Data, Internal Storage)
Then flash PE3 from a stock tar file via Odin.
Yes its inconvenient but still its the cleanest install you can do. Its also the only way you can be certain the the issues you experience is caused by MM and not by a conflict or some other thing you have done to your phone.
+1 for fully functional when flashed properly. My process:
1. Backup
2. Backup your internal data to sd or USB
3. Reboot into recovery, wipe everything (internal and data included)
4. Reboot into download mode
5. Flash with Odin
Optional root:
6. Flash TWRP .tar in Odin. (The best way to get TWRP to stick is to flash it before the ROM boots for the first time. Takes practice and timing, but will save you a headache. )
7. Flash latest seamless root from chainfire in TWRP recovery

Totally stock though. Going to flash TWRP and root of course. Then xposed a week down the road. Need ad blocker and swap back and recent buttons. Guessing from off top of my head but untick reboot after flash. Flash TWRP when Odin finishes rom. This upsets me. Lol. I just factory reset again and setting up my phone. Waiting for apps to DL so I can flash TWRP and root. Ugh. I guess I'll update later or by Friday at least or maybe somebody else will.
My phone is laggy. Did a full wipe as per OP, then flashed stock rom.
SD card tap here to transfer media files
I have a constant notification "SD card tap here to transfer media files." on my Note 4 replaced recently with the T3 version, now that I have done the OTA upgrade to 6.0.1 Marshmallow. Everything else works well. The Galaxy S7 forum has threads on this issue dating back to April 2016 anyway. Is nobody else seeing this on the Note 4? I have a 64 Gig Samsung microSDXC UHS-1 Card. Perhaps this is just cosmetic? Restarting doesn't fix it. Unmounting and remounting from Settings > Storage doesn't fix it. No surprise that taking the card out after power down does eliminate the notification. Replacing the card and restarting brings the notification back.
Saw SD card notification once but not again even after many restarts.

Does OTA not install the update the same as ODIN? I'm dont care for root at the moment as I have in the past.
In the first flash from 5.1.1 to 6.0.1 my phone stalled at the tmobile splash. I just did a factory reset and wiped it down a couple times and it booted up just fine. Has anyone tried secret mode in the Samsung browser? I can't get the fingerprint or password lock on it. In 5.1.1 I could have it so that it needs a fingerprint or password to go into secret mode. I don't see the option to do it now on 6.0.1. I checked on the playstore to see if I have the latest version and I do. It's also not in privacy in settings for the browser.
Waiting on a few more replies before I flash it. Perfect weekend to do it

Just for the record for anyone else reading this thread. I flashed these files and have had no issues. ?
Neither did I.

Thanks, No problem with this update. :good::good::good:
can i use this stock if i have baseband version G920AUCS4CPG1 ?
Are OTA updates disabled on this, and if they are, how do I re-enable them? Thanks.
Update: So you need an at&t sim card to get updates. I was visiting someplace and needed a cheap sim card anyways, so I got the $30 prepaid plan, then BOOM I got updates.
hi! does this works on G920AUCS4CPG1?
Hi everyone, i bought my s6 (at&t brand) when i was in the US last academic year to study. Now that i'm back in italy i noticed that i have the network locked and i can only use the AT&T sim card. Actually i have G920AUCS6EQE1 firmware version, can i update it to G920AUCS6EQG1 and will i have the phone unlocked/debranded or it will still work only with at&t?
Sorry for my bad english, hope you will understand
Thanks in advance

Not sure if anyone is interested but I have a newer version, actually I thinks it is the most current
version. G920AUCU6EQK3_7.0_4File_USA (AT&T).7z. Send me a message if anyone is interested.
