[Q] Strange GPS Behaviour - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Stock Moto X 2014 Pure running Lollipop.
Google Maps finds my location perfectly. However, when I use any Mapping Fitness App, my location is consistently between 1-2,000 yards in error. I've tried Runkeeper, Runtastic, and Map My Walk. Is what's really frustrating is they all use Google Maps. I can switch back in forth in "real time", and Google Maps will have the correct location, but any of the three Fitness Apps will have me in the SAME incorrect location.
What could be causing this inconsistency between Google Maps and the Apps utilizing it?

Handheld GPS apps

Anybody know of an app that will allow me to use my Cappy as a handheld GPS with terrain maps and no data coverage. I like Google Maps and Google Navigation but both of these want to download the map while in use I would like to download and install the maps on my device kind of like an actual handheld gps. I have tried MapDroyd but it only has street maps. Good program though.
Check out Backcountry Navigator. It's only $10 and there's a 16-day free demo.
Thanks will download and give that a try.
copilot live. I only have the 200 meg data plan and I use it as a gps in my car when i am in the middle of nowhere WI without any coverage and its been great. even compensates better then others for the jumpy GPS location.
OruxMaps or mapdroyd do offline maps
I am currently testing MapDroyd and Backcountry, thanks for the info.
Gaia GPS allows downloading of USGS topo images and can put your location on the map. I have it on the phone, but have yet to do anything other than download the tile of my home's topo, and to note that the GPS correctly places me at my home on that map. And it's free.
When spring comes, I'll be checking things out with a lot more vigor.
Oh, the main reason to go with USGS topos and not the other sources is that trails are mapped on the USGS maps. You don't get them with Google terrain.

[Request] Compass app incorp. maps

Hi all.
I'm looking for a compass app with the option of being able to choose my destination from google maps and then have the full-screen compass point me to my destination. If memory serves, such a compass was standard with WinMo 6.5 on our HD2s but since I refuse to go back I'm looking for an android equivalent.
I've looked at a few compass apps that show me my position on the map, or allow me to store my current location but none that do what I want (I don't think).
Any ideas?

[Possible solution] Google maps wakelock

I have been in trouble for a past month. Google maps was holding partial wakelocks on sleep with all settings sync check boxes cleared in Google maps app. But it didn`t help. Settings->Battery always had google maps in here for lower or higher percentage. A day ago I started using better battery stats and noticed networklocationpassivecollector holding wakelock. So i dig into Settings->Locaion access-> Access to my location switch is on. If i switch it to off and then again back to ok dialog "Locations consent" appears when I pressed disagree the problems went away. Dialog message: Allow Google`s location service to collect anonymous location data. Some data may be stored on your device. Collection may occur even when no apps are runing.
Can somebody with google maps wakelock problem confirm this?
Open maps and then location settings in that and disable the report from this device option.

If you disagree in that dialog, then your location discovery will be less accurate, because one of the 2 checkboxes on that screen will not be set.
This appears to be a location settings bug. This also happened to me but with the Facebook app.

I had Google Maps related wakelocks as well. They went away when I turned off everything that had to do with
Location reporting form Google Maps, Account Settings and GPS Settings. I'm not sure which "feature" was
causing it but there is indeed a problem.
Can anybody with this wakelock problem install Greenify app from play store. I had this problem but as soon as I hibernated maps they no longer cause wakelock and GPS and all the location settings are on. Maybe it will help same as me without a need to switch anything off.

Google uses Android phones to keep its Wi-Fi database up to date, saves driving around in a car and getting into trouble for collecting data This is why they state it may use some data even if you aren't using Maps or location services.
Disabling reporting of locations from Maps doesn't change the wake locks, as it isn't the reporting causing most of them.
So Google will use your device to scan for Wi-Fi points, plus enable your GPS if it can to get a location fix to update it's location database of Wi-Fi points. To further confuse things Google seems to have some adaptive way of using devices, perhaps after a time they give individual phones a rest from reporting, or they use more of your phone the more you use more of the service, sort of our cost for getting free location services. This means different people see different battery usage from Google Maps, and the same person will see loads one day then it suddenly stops another.
The best way of stopping it is if you have root access download an application that lets you disable apps, and then disable Google Maps, only turning it on when you need it.

Interesting. Is this an assumption or the fact? If former, could you link up the source please?

Hey guys. Thanks for great advises I will try auto starts (or greenify), because after disagreeing to Google passive collector Google Now stopped working. But maps wake locks are still away
And yes Google do collects Wi-Fi routers information. I noticed that when I bring my router to other place all connected laptops web based Google maps showed that our current location is my home

Location reporting in Google services for 4.4 KK Sense roms

Recently I found the NLP wakelocks have used up much of the battery and can't a way to switch of Google location reporting. Any thoughts? I don't want to switch off all location services as I may need them for Maps or so...
I experienced exactly the same problems leading to a ton of wakeups from Google service. The only solution for me until now was to switch off all locations even though the weather and everything doesn't work properly anymore..

Location sharing on Google Maps from within Android Auto - ideeas ?

Hello.
I have enabled location sharing on google maps, I sometimes find myself in need of knowing where someone is ... like when I'm going to pick up my wife and she is not waiting for me and keeps walking.
Anyway, after trying a few apps I've come to the conclusion that google maps location sharing is still king for my needs.
Everything is great, I can see the person on my phone on google maps, I can select it and drive towards that location, BUT ONLY ON MY PHONE !
Problem is that I'm never on foot, I always drive, so naturally I want to use google maps from android auto on my car.
Big surprise here ... on google maps from android auto I don't have the position of the person that is sharing the location.
So if my phone is not connected to the car I can open google maps on my phone and see the location. If my phone is connected to the car with android auto - on google maps on my car's tablet I can not see the position.
Ok, I have a rooted phone on my car, permanently connected via usb to the car. Being rooted - I've installed aa mirror.
So I start aamirror, I can see on my car's tablet all the apps that I have on my phone... so I start google maps .... no success ... it gets me to that google maps from android auto - the one that is without the google account and I can not see positions.
Any ideeas how to solve this ?
I will try to clone google maps, perhaps I can manage to get it to open like on the phone.
Any ideea would be appreciated, thanks.
Actually it's working ...
On android auto I have two navigation apps - google maps & waze.
I have accidentally found that if in navigation mode last app used is google maps - than if i launch aa mirror and from there I launch google maps - than it will open google maps android auto version - the one standard that appears if you press the navi button (first one from the left) - this is the one where I am not connected to my google account and I can not see the people that are sharing the location with me.
But on the other hand, if last navi app used is waze - than if I start aa mirror and proceed to launch google maps from aa mirror - than a "phone" version of google maps will open, I can see that I'm logged in with my google account, I can see sharing locations, I can navigate to those who share their locations. Except that it's not completely full screen - on the right part of the screen I have the buttons from android auto. But's it's not bothering me, I consider this ok, I can do what I wanted to be able to do.
