I've been having problems with deleting and editing files on my SD card. I was really hoping this would be fixed when upgrading to Lollipop but I'm having the same issues.
I'm using JetAudio Player which has the ability to edit MP3 tags and delete files/folders from the app directly. I've never been able to do it. I contacted the dev and he said to remove all the files, reset the device reopen the app, etc. Just setting everything back to zero. It didn't do anything. Then he suggested I try with the Google Play Music app and it's the same thing! I can't delete music that's on my SD card from that app either.
I've tried formatting it to NTFS (which the Z3c didn't even recognize as valid formatting) FAT32 from my computer and as exfat from the phone itself and none of it made a difference.
I have successfully deleted files on the SD card from ES file explorer after it prompted me for the root SD folder.
Has anyone had these issues before?
Have you tried http://click.xda-developers.com/api...play.google.com/store/apps/d...evasque.fmount

I'd rather not root it since I've had to send it back and I don't want to void my warranty...
Are you talking about the limitation introduced by Google since KitKat - external SD isn't writable by user apps, only by system apps?
Google fixed that in Lollipop, that's why I'm asking. I'm running Lollipop and an official Google app can't write to my SD card.
I can move apps to my SD card, but Google Play Music can't delete files on my SD card.
Google didn't "fix that", there's a different API now that allows doing a large part of what KitKat totally prevented. However, this API needs to be utilized by the app - old apps that didn't get updated specifically for Lollipop with support for this new API will get blocked just the same as in KitKat. This is why ES Explorer asked for the root of SD card.
My guess is that the apps you use aren't updated, including Google's own.

I am aware that Lollipop uses a different API for this. With all respect, I'd be really surprised if google didn't update their own app with this. Can anyone with a stock Lollipop Z3 Compact check if they can delete songs from the Play Music app?
Facing Similar Issues.
I am unable to update album art or edit metadata of song files on the SD card of my Xperia Z3 compact. I have tried the Walkman app and also another app called MusiXmatch. Both show a message that we they can't edit the files. My previous phone Xperia Z faced no such problems on Jelly Bean. Isn't there any cure for this problem without rooting.

I have a Nexus S (stock) and want to know if there is a application that will locate files and folders that are leftover when you uninstall apps (similar to a registry cleaner in Windows). I found one for rooted phones but that doesn't help me.
Is fragmentation (within your phone's memory or sd card) a problem with Android? Is there an app for that?
yep it's called SD Maid.

Thanks. I downloaded and tried it. Found 4 files. The info on market says it's for rooted phones and is very limited for stock phones, Better than nothing, but would love to find an app for stock phones.
Hi, before buying The Xperia Z1, i would like to know if the device allows "Move to sd card" for apps and games, anyone can help?
Nope not yet maybe in the next update

you can write your own scripts app to sd or use titanium app to link folders. there are plenty of work around with out app. but you need to know adb and other scripts for it to work. if you code and understands linux, you should know some work around for app to sd. Of course you Need Unlocked Bootloader and Full Root access. linking apps with folders, direction can be used similar to Google Music folder link to external SD.
oh btw, you can choose any phone, not just Z1. cause most runs with OEM customized UI with limitations.
your best bet is running a Phone with stock closely related with out restriction.
So, I just installed the 4.4.2 OTA and I immediately noticed one big problem: I wasn't able to modify content on my SD card. I wasn't able to delete folders, or create folders, or create files. Reading content was no problem, and the camera app was able to save pictures to the card, but going through a file manager wouldn't work.
I started to do some research and I found this post from the developer of my chosen file manager, FX:
https://plus.google.com/+TodLiebeck/posts/gjnmuaDM8sn
Then, while getting ready to post this, I found another related thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2641936
I thought this was a big enough deal to warrant a new thread here. Bottom line is you may want to hold off on this update, or at least go in with your eyes open because for a lot of people, like me, this is a BIG problem. It's damned near a dealbreaker for using my S4 as a matter of fact. Note that it does seem you're able to use the My Files app, but that's almost useless to me: FX has SMB support and I'm constantly pulling files off my server. I even have FolderSync set up to run every night, but I don't expect that'll work either (I'm about to try now).
Whether Samsung spits out a fix quickly, or whether I can root and fix this, it's a pretty significant problem. Be aware folks!
Then I will update after a stable de-knoxed ROM is available.

Thanks.for this. I think I will still update as I plan on staying unrooted and will use "my files".

I'm all for avoiding Knox, but in this case it appears to not be Knox-related after all... looks like it was a permission change that Google mandated for devices with external storage and Samsung followed the specification to the letter. I think Tod Liebeck explained it better than I can though. I can only hope Samsung gets it together and quickly releases a patch... I've read in another thread that they may have done this before and quickly put out a fix... if so, shame on them for making the same mistake twice, but so long as a fix is forthcoming, so be it. I'm not so sure there will be one though, that's my concern.
It's early to call that is the bug since nobody mentioned this issue.
And all are busy how to update.
I will wait 48 hours until all things be more clear.
Could you try another SD card and tell us if the issue is happening to the new sd card?

Thing is, it was something that was apparently talked about before the update on other devices with 4.4.2. It's not a bug per se, Samsung did what Google told them to do, and Google told them to do it, I'd bet, to push people towards cloud storage since they don't want external storage used anymore anyway. None of that matters though because the fact is it's hurting some users (though I'd agree that not all will be impacted- it all depends on how you use your device).
A different card wouldn't matter, it's not related to that at all. It's a permission change that Google mandated with 4.4 (or 4.3, I've seen some conflicting info) that only impacts devices with external storage, and Samsung chose to follow Google's specification exactly in this case, to the detriment of (some) users.
FYI, *IF* you're rooted, here's a solution that fixes this. Worked for me and easy to do:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2524277
Just remember to keep a copy so you can quickly undo it to take an OTA since I assume it'll stop an OTA.
Soooo lemme get this straight... Lets say I update to KitKat (NAE)and root it, and I have apps on my computer (like Flappy Bird APK for instance), I now cannot copy the Flappy Bird APK onto my SD Card then place it (using a root explorer) in system/app and use it?! If so this is a huge deal-breaker... Or am I misunderstanding this and there's more to it?
thankfully you can still create on the SD card from a computer when plugged. but i can confirm you cannot create anything on the SD card from ES file explorer, you can still create on the internal storage just fine tho

You can still copy from your computer if you use a USB cable... if you instead have a shared drive on your PC and connect to it via SMB from a file explorer, you won't be able to copy a file to the SD card.
In addition, using a third-party file explorer you won't be able to create, rename, delete or edit files or directories on the SD card, nor will you be able to copy files from internal storage to your SD card. This is strictly a limitation placed on non-system apps (meaning any you yourself install).
If you're rooted though, a quick edit to a single system file will deal with this, but nobody should *have* to do that.

I was just transferring some apk files over to my I9305 via a usb pendrive when I noticed I could no longer write to my SD card.
I was able to move files around and delete folders after getting this message "your system forbids es from writing on external sd card...." when I tried to add a folder, but it's now also stopped me from deleting any files.
I've tried downloading Astro to check it's not just ES File Explorer playing up., as well as using the standard file explorer but neither will let me write to the card.
I scanned everything with Superantispyware and malwarebytes to check for viruses before I connected the drive to my pc so I think I can rule out virus issues.
I'm running stock 4.3. I'm rooted and have just checked SuperSU and there seem to be no problems there. Apps needing root are working fine.
I recently installed xposed framework. I've removed the rootcloak module (that didn't work for skygo so there was no point keeping it) and I've updated SuperSU through the play store.
Is this likely to be an issue with the card (64gb Sandisk)? It's been in for a year and once I reformatted it, there's been very few issues. When I lost write access last time I didn't get a message like this, just a brief notice that I didn't have write access.
At the moment, I can survive without write access, but when I travel it's essential as my S3 take the place of my computer for the duration of my trip.
EDIT - can a mod delete this post or let me know how I can please? It was an issue with the SD card - I put it in my PC to check for errors. One was found and corrected and all seems fine now
the same thing just started happening to me. i think maybe my sd card is broken.
---------- Post added at 10:34 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:29 PM ----------
never mind, my sd card was just full.
THANKYOU Honor for taking the time to come back and write that.
I'd just spent HOURS on the same problem and was about to use the nuclear option: backup and reroot my device. You saved me from that.
You'd think the makers of ES Explorer could have added to their error dialogue a simple phrase like "or your SD card is full" !
I'm sorry this can appear as another lame demonstration of lazyness, but I searched everywhere and I just can't understand what is happening with my cellphone.
So I grab my Moto G 2014 8GB yesterday. It asked for Lollipop upgrade right out of the box, which I followed instantly. So I can say I never experienced KK and it quierks with SDCards before - although I know them.
So I keep this handful numbers of apps installed; not just that, they create their amount of data on their own - Pocket, Evernote and some other examples. I was just happy to see the whole storage options appearing on Android 5 - external app, external data and so. But the bottom line was different; I had this feeling that altough I could move some apps 2 external SD, they were not actually being moved. And with OI File Manager (don't laugh, everyone has its preferred file manager) I could check it was really not moving anything at all:
So, what I am not understanding: Why the system shows that I can move apps and that they were moved if anything is going to the external storage?
I can take more pictures showing that my ANDROID folder is quite empty and that the example app is not listed there.
Just so no one calls me lazy, my crazy non-tech opinion is that the Lollipop update allows the moving but the new runtimes (ART) don't.
Can someone with the Android 5 update check where their moved apps went?
REMARK: Just so you have all the info, mine is the XT1068 hw model.
EDIT: Mine is a 32GB Kingston Class4. Hum... Does it pick wich card it could work with?
Am I really being that noob? No one answered me...

Well, Lollipop does allow apps to be moved to your SD Card as usual, I don't see what's the issue here..
Everything has been working fine for me, and your apps appear to be moved as well.
Thanks for your reply. Yes, Motorola Lollipop allows apps to be moved to external memory - but it seems my system it's faking it.
I tried something else: I uninstalled the reference app. Nothing happened to external SD, but the internal memory got the whole amount of space that the system pointed out as internal and external ones. Again, the information is right, but the system is not doing what it's showing in the pictures.

Yes you can move to sd card
Hey, you can also move move your to external sd card using app called "Link2SD"
If your solution involve root, I'm sorry but it's a no-go for me. I'm tray ng to stay as clean as can - and moto phones seemed my best option for this. But now I can't even download my Evernote data because it's too big and it keeps downloading to internal memory - although it says it's using the external one.

I am a moto e user..and need my device's elder brother's help
It will be very great full of you guyz if u can confirm if any games are working with their data file placed in sd card ?
i am using moto e(lollipop) and when i place data in sd card it is detected but then the game just shuts down without any message or fc..
That's because data is usually saved on the internal storage. You can move the apps, but not their data.

My research from the last two days shows exactly this. But it seems that Motorola has made some changes so we could use much more of the external SD card - which is the complaining I have against Moto G 2014.

Please check this link:
https://awanstuff.wordpress.com/201...ink2sd-in-any-android-phone-with-screenshots/
It describes the exact way to enable your phone to move all apps to SD. I also ran into the low memory problem and this was my solution.
I have a samsung galaxy S3 on android 5.1.1 by the way. The solution is the 2nd partition on the sd-card that has to be created as primary partition. This is the key. Then Link2SD
sees it and is able to put data on it. There's lots of tools in the play store that promise to handle this and create the partition for you, but none are able to do this correctly. So, you have to resort to a pc and usb-cable and follow the above instructions. Then you can move your apps. Even system apps, but i recommend against that, as i tried this with google play services, but that kept crashing after that, so i reverted the move quickly.
Good luck, it works for me! Can't imagine why it woudn't work for you. :good:
