I intend to purchase the Nexus 6, Midnight Blue, 32 GB at full retail price and maintain my unlimited data plan on Verizon. Does it matter where I purchase the phone? What should I keep in mind?

You will be able to keep your unlimited data, and since the nexus only comes in two models (international and US) any one you purchase from a us seller will work. I'm even rocking an AT&T nexus on Verizon as we speak.

Noted. Verizon dislikes non-VZW devices. The phone will work, but they may choose not to honor any discounts.
Are there any drawbacks to purchasing from Verizon?

I purchased my white 64gb Nexus 6 through Google to be able to keep my unlimited plan as well. The device does show up as a non vzw device though. It's easy to make changes to the plan if you're adding (meaning more money for them) but to removing options (less money for them) is where it gets tricky. Really in my opinion it just depends on the rep you talk to. Long story short, about two weeks ago I called to add international calling to my plan, the rep offered me a plan they no longer have. When I realized she added the wrong plan I called back and the guy said he couldn't remove the options that were added and needed to submit a ticket and I would receive a call back when it's all taken care of. After a week of hearing nothing I called back and was talking to a guy who was really helpful. He removed and changes that were made to my account, but did say that having the Nexus 6 come up as a non vzw device made it a little tricky to remove the options but nothing that couldn't be done.
I have unlimited data on VZW, and I bought 64gb blue off Play Store. I didn't want any tie to VZW because when my invite for Google FI comes, I just may go that route.
I went into company-owned store (not a retailer) for new SIM card. Was a bit of a "hassle" insofar as all the reps were all clueless as to how to give me a SIM card when the device ID was not in their database. They tried to shuffle me off to customer service, but I made them call customer service with me in the store. The tech support rep went into the same bootloop (can't give you a card and get the device registered if the device id is not in the database) but eventually, they figured out they just needed to insert SIM card and it would activate itself. I found I had to be pleasant but assertive to get it done, as they seemed to be unwilling to just hand over a SIM card, which is all they needed to do.

You were lucky that you found some reasonable reps to deal with. Many VZW representatives will flat out refuse to give you a SIM if the IMEI is not in their system.

It looked like it was heading that way, but I was assertive in saying that I know it could be done and that is when we got the phone to tech support. I suggested we use the SIM card they had in front of me and ask tech support to get it going while I was in the store, and eventually it all worked out after the tier 1 tech support guy took the initiative to look some things up.
Point is, be polite but firm, don't take "no" for an answer. There is a difference in software (although what, I don't know, but I didn't want anything other than pure google on my phone), so it was worth the minor hassle to me.

Once moto maker becomes available for Verizon (hopefully next week), is it possible to keep unlimited data and get the on contract price and do moto maker? I have a family share plan with 2 lines with unlimited data and 1 line that's a feature phone (no data). I know if I go to the store I can simply transfer an upgrade from one of my unlimited lines to the feature phone line, upgrade it and add a data plan temporarily. Then activate it on that line and get them to then switch it to my unlimited line and cancel the data plan I put on the feature phone line. While that works in store, does anyone know of any way to accomplish that and do moto maker as well? Thanks in advance.
If Vzw goes the Moto Maker pin method, I don't see why not.
Does anyone know the Moto Maker Verizon variant bootloader status?

any carrier branded device will have a locked bootlaoder for VZW. Only way to get an unlocked one is buy a Dev edition at full retail, problem is no access to MotoMaker if oyu buy Dev edition

Maybe SIM card unlocked but not bootloader. Honestly that ( bootloader unlock) would make no sense seeing as AT&T is the only company using MotoMaker still and all there devices are locked. That said I dont care either, I buy retail and buy Dev edition anyways. no contract for me & i want my unlimited data still.
Thanks guys. Ordered the Dev Ed for Vzw. :good:

Thanks! How would that work? I don't really know how the moto maker pin works. Would I be able to transfer the upgrade to my non smart phone and then get the moto maker pin, then have the Verizon store rep switch the moto x line to my unlimited data line?

AFAIK, you go to the store just like any other upgrade but you don't walk out with the handset. Instead, you get a Pin # that you enter at the Moto Maker website and the phone is shipped to you.
I haven't done an upgrade transfer (one line only) but numerous people on xda and droid-life seem to have done it; you may need to find a rep that knows the procedure though.

I'm in the same boat. My rep couldn't do it because of having to leave vzw site to finalize the order. Same on my end. I did ask her about the pin situation and I will report back if she figures anything out. I would just buy the dev edition buy not a big fan of the white and black look.

Sounds good - I was thinking about going in to a verizon store to ask about the PIN deal and see if I can get one from a transferred upgrade there. Probably won't be able to get there until Thursday, but I'll report back here with what I find if nothing else comes up first.
Edit:
Actually made it in this afternoon, and the reps seemed adamant that even transferring an upgrade would cause the unlimited data to be taken off the original line. So I didn't do anything else at the store.

I was not able to do it online either. I'm going to try the transfer at a store on Monday to see if I have any better luck.
i've done two moto x upgrades and have unlimited on both lines.
see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2525268
Success (I think)!
I went into my local Verizon store yesterday and had success! The key was using an upgrade from a line without an unlimited data package. I talked with customer care online and they confirmed that if I were to transfer an upgrade to OR from the line with unlimited data, I would lose it. So, in effect, I will have an available upgrade on my unlimited data line (as of next February- see below) that I can never use with a subsidized phone. I also talked to multiple sales reps at the store to confirm they'd be willing to the post-delivery swap for me before pulling the trigger. Here's my situation:
Nationwide Family Share Plan (700 minutes FWIW, but that shouldn't matter)
1) Line 1- Galaxy Nexus w/ unlimited data, upgrade eligible in 2/2014
2) Line 2- Feature phone, upgrade eligible now
Here's what happened:
1) Used the Line 2 upgrade to order a new Moto X with a Motomaker PIN and add (temporarily) to a minimum 2GB plan on that line
2) Went home and completed the order via Moto Maker
Here's what is supposed to happen next:
3) When the phone arrives, activate it on Line 2
4) Re-activate the old Line 2 feature phone, thus deactivating the new Moto X and cancelling the 2GB plan.
5) Put the SIM card from the Line 1 GNex into the Moto X and activate the phone.
Talking to customer care and to the in-store sales reps, it was advised to do steps 3-5 in person at the Verizon store, to make sure it all goes well. I archived my on-line conversation with customer care, so I have a record that indicates I should be able to keep unlimited data, just in case. Doing this will reset the upgrade date on the Line 2 to 11/2015 and not touch Line 1. Of course, as I mentioned above, the Line 1 upgrade is unusable (if I use a subsidized phone), or I will lose my unlimited data on that line.
Phone should arrive next Saturday, 11/23. Can't wait!

Don't believe them. I recently switched the upgrade from my unlimited vzw S4 to another line on my contract through the website and ordered a moto x on that line. I could've then switched the phone over to replace my S4 but it was for my wife so I kept it there. Nothing changed with my unlimited. I too was told several times that doing this exact thing would surrender my unlimited. It didn't.
people who are going in to the stores, asking what's this and how to do this to keep unlimited... STOP!
there's lots of help, including some previous posts (as well as a few helpful reps trolling the interwebz) on the how to... if you're going into a store to purchase a moto maker pin, ONLY tell them that you want to purchase a PIN with an alternate upgrade. all of that other stuff/details/etc. just confuses them and they have to put in their two cents. just go in to do what you need to do and get out.

The problem was that they were not going to let me transfer the upgrade for an in store purchase - they said the "proper" way to do this was to order the upgrade on the line that had it, and then transfer the phone to the alternate line afterwards (which definitely would remove the unlimited data). I dont think I could have convinced them to transfer the upgrade and then give me a PIN at the store I was at...
I ended up just doing it online (non-motomaker), which worked fine, but I'm a little disappointed I couldn't upgrade the storage.

stores do alternate upgrades all of the time. if you're still in your 14 days, i say go to a different store.
Just left a Verizon store. Was told I wouldnt be able to keep Unlimited by transferring the upgrade from my line to the non unlimited line, told him I wanted to try and see if it would work anyway. He goes through the process And it keeps our plan the same but he remained adamant that a soon as I activated it, it would change the plan. So it looks like I'll be seeing what happens, hoping for the best.
After attempting to buy from 3 retail tmobile stores (who wouldn't sell me the phone without a plan) I ordered my nexus 6 via the phone. Several retail workers and customer support agents on the phone have told me I need to keep service on my phone for 45days to get the unlock code from them. Currently awaiting delivery (back ordered )
What happens if I don't wait for the unlock code And I just insert my Verizon sim?
The tmobile nexus 6 is suppousedly the same as the Unlocked GP nexus 6, so what exactly is unlocked?
I'm coming from a note 4 (my note 4 lags a lot more than everyone else and I can't take it anymore, couldn't figure out the cause)
will the nexus 6 have multi windows at all?
Also how do you use the notifications on this (I played with a 2013 moto x, is it the same?)
Sorry for all the question and thanks in advance for any help.
I just bought the phone from T-Mobile with their cheapest plan Wednesday and I'm canceling them today. From what I've been Reading I shouldn't have to pay anything for the plan. I haven't used it at all and just popped my Verizon Sim card right away.

Thank you, you pretty much saved me 45 days of phone bill payment.
Im assuming if i dont activate the tmobile sim, i can cancel/not have any charges.
I prev had the z1s with them for like a month and canceled due to their poor customer service , surprised they let me sign up again. (Then again theyre the ones who wanted me to sign up, i just wanted to buy the phone outright and use it on my unlimted data verizon line)

OK, so I see that the T-Mo Nexus 6 works fine on VZW, however I see that all of you said you bought it outright, how about buying subsidized? Will it work if on VZW then, since the phone is getting activated, will it lock it to work only on T-Mo? Thanks for the help in advanced!

As stated above T-Mobile doesn't sim lock phones.... They also don't subsidize phones because they are the "uncarrier" so it will work if you pop the Verizon sim in assuming you have a bank sim ready to go.
As what others have said, T-Mobile doesn't lock the phones.
AT&T and Sprint are on a different story, AT&T I've heard locked their phones via carrier.
Sprint doesn't lock their phones but some people have reported buying them from Amazon have carrier locked so be careful on that.
T-Mobile will however make you stay with them for one month (I believe) before you can cancel. If you cancel, your EIP balance is due. If you pay outright, you'll still have to stick with them for a month. At least thats my understanding of it.
U.S. Cellular also sells the phone now but I'm not sure about their policy.

Theres availability, you just need to stick around for them. Have a auto refresh script that alerts you when its available. They randomly add them in stock.

Assuming I buy the N6 from T-Mobile (subsidized or not) - what is their cancellation policy? Someone mentioned 45 day scenario where you can cancel without penalty? Is that true?

They dont do contracts. Just dont activate their sim and call them up saying you want to cancel.
If youre looking for a 32g id recomend buying off motorola.
Hi,
I have read several threads about this, so I have a basic idea of what will happen, but I just want some specific answers to a few things. Sorry if these particular questions have been addressed already.
I am a long time verizon subscriber. I am on a Nationwide Talk & Text plan with my family. I am not the primary line on the account. I still have unlimited data that I would like to hold on to. My Moto X (1st Gen DE) just took a swim in the washing machine so it's time to upgrade. I would ideally like to get the 64GB N6 from google or moto, but I would settle for the official VZW version if the non-VZW complicates things too much.
So here are my questions:
I know that if I buy from Google/Moto, then the phone will be listed as a non-verizon device. I have seen people talk about how this will make it difficult to change plan options. Is this only the case if my line were the primary line (it isn't)? Or will this cause issues for my family members too if they decide to change things?
I have a nano-sim already from my MotoX. Would activation be easiest if I just popped that into my N6? I know people have had to fight with activating new SIM cards, I just want to know if I have anything in store for me with using my existing SIM card.
Thanks!

1st question: I'm not sure.
2nd question: No activation required. Just put your MotoX SIM in your N6.
3rd answer to unasked question: Be aware that only the IMEI for VZW devices are white listed. This means you won't receive a BYOD discount if you activate a non VZW version.

Technically VZW reserves the right to give you trouble anytime it's not a VZW device. Interestingly enough the new legal precendence requires carriers to allow their devices to be carrier unlocked, but does not require them to accept devices on to their network whenever they see fit. Its sort of hit and miss. There are a lot of folks who have the GPE version and no issues, others that have had a lot of issue. The "safest" bet is to get a VZW N6 at retail and roll with it.
SIMs are typically swappable, so long as they are the same form factor. I just got my N6 Friday and took the SIM out of my old phone, put it right in my N6. The switch over was without issue.
Thanks for the guidance!

Apparently the BYOD discount (technically just "out-of-contract" discount, apparently) doesn't apply on my old NationWide plan, so this isn't really an issue unless we upgrade to MoreEverything. I don't remember whether it is possible to upgrade the plan and keep unlimited data.

Both the MotoX and N6 have nano-sims, so no cutting required. Just out of curiosity, are you running the VZW or GPE?

Apparently the BYOD discount (technically just "out-of-contract" discount, apparently) doesn't apply on my old NationWide plan, so this isn't really an issue unless we upgrade to MoreEverything. I don't remember whether it is possible to upgrade the plan and keep unlimited data.

No, you'll loose unlimited data if you change to the Edge plan.
Welcome. And BTW; there's a button for that.
Thanks again for the help!
I think I will go with the unlocked version from Moto. If I have issues with Verizon, then I can return it within 14 days and go back to the VZW Edition.
Sorry if this has already been talked about, I couldn't find it.
I think I managed to get one of the-less-than stellar Fi reps on a chat and didn't get an answer I was confident with.
My invite is looking to be ready in 4 weeks. I haven't purchased an N6 yet - I'd much prefer to get one used on eBay. My question is whether one from T-Mo, AT&T, VZW, Sprint will work with Fi assuming it's unlocked - or does it need to be one originally purchased as unlocked and not tied to a carrier at any point?
Is there a preferred go-to device assuming that's true? I read that the AT&T version comes with bloatware.
Bonus question (another I've had trouble getting a clear answer for): Since Sprint uses CDMA last I checked - will international texting work when it latches onto their network? VZW and Sprint have always tooted international texting capabilities but I have not once had CDMA->GSM work when sending or receiving messages from stateside to Europe. Any chance it carries on using GSM?
Thanks much.

1st, all Nexus 6 are SIM unlocked, EXCEPT the AT&T version. The AT&T version can be unlocked via a code once the device is paid off, and 60 days have lapsed since it was first registered for service on AT&T.
Any version of the Nexus 6 will work on Fi (including the AT&T version if it has been SIM unlocked).
2nd, the AT&T version and the Verizon version have a few of their carrier apps. These are easily removed. And flashing a new factory image via fastboot does away with them too. So I wouldn't worry about this.
And remember to not confuse bootloader unlocked with carrier unlocked, FWIW.
Thanks @cam30era. I've always just relied on eBay sellers for unlock codes. Never had an issue with it. Is the Nexus any different in that regard? Does your mention of AT&T being the only sim-locked one mean that VZW, etc. sells/sold the N6 as a full priced unlocked N6 just like any other? Thanks.

Nexus 6 is no different than any other device regarding carrier unlocking. All others (VZW etc.) are carrier unlocked out of the box.
Sprint issue
So I own a nexus 6 through Sprint and I still owe money on it (installment billing, not contract) my question is I have a project fi sim card and I want to port my number over (I know I'll owe the remaining balance) but can I do this while I pay my balance off of does it need to be paid off first. I ask for two reasons, one is because its supposed to be carrier unlocked out of box, and two, because I had one project fi card activated already and it worked just fine. Just wanted to make sure

Installment billing is a contract. If you port your number before you finish paying it, Sprint will hit you with the remaining balance - I don't know whether or not they throw in a penalty fee on top of that. You would need to have them unlock it once your account is squared away (or just pay $5 for a code on eBay).
From Sprint website:
What happens if a customer on an Installment Agreement cancels service prior to completing their 24 device payments?
If a customer on an Installment Agreement cancels service prior to completing their 24 device payments, the full remaining unpaid balance on the device will be due on customer's next invoice.

So I'll have to pay it off, or get that eBay code thing? Even though I've activated a fi sim card in it before but with a different number?

Good luck on the Ebay code. Another user tried to bypass ATT and there was no code available for the N6.

From my understanding a Fi sim card would have been able to activate and work on it, by connecting to Sprint's network only. You can't get out of paying off the rest of the phone and keep it, since that would be stealing and phone companes generally frown upon that kind of thing.

I have every intention of paying it off, bug as for being only to connect to Sprint only. I had it connect to lte and get lte speeds where I live, and where I live Sprint only has 3g while T-Mobile has lte...this is where I get confused as to it not working even though it's already carrier unlocked out of box

Sprint N6 are not carrier locked. You do not not need an unlock code to move your device to Fi. With that said, you are still legally and ethically bound by the termination requirements of your contract.
FWIW: the only US carrier N6 that is carrier locked is AT&T.
I am trying to activate an N6 from Amazon on Sprint, and they are saying only Sprint devices can be activated. Maybe I didn't do enough homework before buying this, but is that correct? I was under the impression that unlocked phones could go anywhere*. Can someone confirm before I send my phone back to Amazon?
Thanks!
*any major US carrier, btw mine is the XT1103 variant
bump, anyone?
Heading into the store today, but want to be armed with as much info as possible.
All devices should work on all networks, they are lying to you if they say it's not going to work.if
If they decline to give you a SIM and you already have a sprint phone with a SIM card, just put the SIM in your nexus. If your SIM is too big for the nexus, but a SIM cutter for $5 from amazon or eBay to cut your SIM to fit the nexus.
I'll keep updating this thread for reference if anyone else has a similar problem.
I went to the Sprint store today and the people there, at least my local one, are so much more helpful than customer care reps. Anyway, they were not able to activate it in the store either. Their system wasn't 100% explicit in giving the reason, but the guy I worked with believe the ESN to be in their system, but the phone was active on a 3rd party carrier (one of the smaller carriers). Since it was an Amazon Warehouse deal and appeared to be an open box, this is entirely plausible that someone activated and returned the phone. Him and another employee at the store said Amazon phones should activate no problem, so I am returning mine for a new one.
I did run an ESN check though Swappa, and they show it as clear and ready to activate, so it is hard to say what is really going on. I contacted Amazon and I have a BNIB replacement coming for mine, so hopefully all should be well.
I don't know if this applies to my situation since the Sprint store thought the ESN was in their system already (and several articles I've seen state that Sprint has whitelisted devices not from Sprint or Google Play), but here is some information from the SprintAMA account on reddit they may come in handy for someone about activating a non-sprint nexus. https://np.reddit.com/r/Sprint/comments/2mpr7s/update_regarding_the_nexus_6_from_motorola_on/”

Yep. I've dealt with poorly trained customer reps with Verizon before as well. The first guy I spoke with (which was on Sprint Chat) was pretty explicit that the phone had to be from Sprint. The next person I spoke to on Chat didn't really offer much information, other than suggesting I go to a store. The guys at the store were super helpful and said it shouldn't be a problem. It seems that in this case the phone may be already active on another network, but hard to say for sure. We'll see how it goes when my replacement gets here Saturday.

I've seen others had problems getting a SIM from Sprint. When I first came to Sprint I bought an LG G2 from Swappa (Sprint variant LS980) and they gave me a SIM with no hassle. I had cut down my SIM from that phone for the N6 but they went ahead and gave me a new one anyway* and said they'll give me one any time.
*A new nano sim for the replacement N6 when I receive it. I'm just letting my LG limp by without LTE until then.

the mods are helpful and some employees there may be able to direct you. corp stores should be able to assist too.
When I got my N5, I had to go through 3 sim cards before I got one to work. Sprint CS is so behind the times when it comes to new technology, IMO.
Got my new nexus in today and activated without issue. Sprint wouldn't let me activate online for some reason so I took it to the store and it went fine.
This phone kicks ass btw
the store needs to put a click it ticket in to add the esn to their network, takes about 48 hours, and youll need a sim from them which the store can order or customer care can order.the part number for the sim is SIMGLW426C
Yeah sprint is a pain to activate devices not bought in their store, I've had friends with similar issues but with a Nexus 6 they've always been able to get it in the end.
Just a hassle...

For whatever reason I couldn't activate the phone myself online, but the store was able to in about 15 mins. Glad I didn't have to wait a couple days for a click it ticket to go though.
You should request an invitation to the Google Project Fi! Then you can use both Sprint and T-Mobile as well as WiFi for calling. I'm just porting an unlimited data Verizon number over to Fi...

I'm trying to find the link, but Project Fi users were informed that the N6 model being sold on Amazon would NOT work because it lacked the appropriate Sprint radio. The model # was different tho... have you double checked yours?

I appreciate the help, but this has been resolved. For the record, the Nexus 6 from Sprint or others absolutely works on Sprint so long as it is the XT1103 North American model, including LTE and CDMA. The XT1103 is the same phone sold by Sprint.
The original issue I had with Sprint had to do with my phone from Amazon being an open-box and previously/currently activated on another carrier.

its NOT a different model, its the same exact model. every nexus 6 that is sold in the united states is the exact same model, with the same radio, with the same available bands. and yes, it will work on project fi just fine. what you just said has nothing based in fact behind it. the only other version fir the n6, is the european/workd version, that isnt really sold in the united states, unless its in ebay or similar.
