Google Now & Battery Life - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm sure this has been discussed ad nauseum, but I haven't revisited it in quite a while.
I really do enjoy Google Now and all the fun things it does for us. What are you guys doing to help out battery drain while using it? Are you using the "Battery Save" location function or some other tweak/setting?
Thanks!

I'm using latest Chroma with overclocked version of leanKernel and regularly use Google Now. I can't say I have any issues with battery life. For me, I set leanKernel to power saving through it's config, disable nav bar because I use LMT, use expanded desktop for that little extra screen space, and finally pick a dark-ish layers theme. Other than that I get greenify from play store (do not use it with exposed right now) and set it up to hibernate pretty much everything it can, except for things I deem important.

im running at 3033mhz/35mhz, and am using google now fully, without disabling anything, and see about 5.5h sot each battery cycle. so i dont think it effects battery very much.

5Ways to extend battery life of Nexus5

Here are five ways to extend the battery life of Nexus5. I know that many nexus5 users face the problem with battery life.
1. At first, turn off the auto brightness of your Nexus5. Cause it's the main reason for battery drain. Set your brightness always in medium or low.
2. 2nd step is, Turn off WiFi Scanning. You need to uncheck the "Scanning Always Available" option.
3. 3rd step is, Turn off your GPS location settings and Bluetooth. It draws a lot of battery power. Only use these when you need to use this features.
4. 4rth Step is, always use standard wallpaper, Any kind of animated wallpaper can be the reason for drain battery of your Nexus 5.
5. The final step is , Turn off automatic updates of Applications. But keep them up-to-date.
You forgot "Turn OFF Google Now if you don't use it"
That seems more like a general android guide than one specific to the N5... Just saying.
You forgot about custom kernals and under clocking GPU and CPU and undervolting

omg i would have never thought of this. you saved my life
Step 1. Install Franco kernel and tweak settings for battery (undervolt, reduce touch_boost)
Step 2. Install Xposed with GravityBox and tweak auto brightness settings
even though these ideas are a bit obvious to the experienced user, i thank the op for trying to help out
With gravity box I get massive battery drain, I know for many it's not an issue but I'm not alone in finding it drains significantly quicker. I still have the xposed framework but using the less feature rich wanam without issue.

Step 7
I find I get GREAT battery life when I don't turn the screen on. It lasts, like, 10 days!!

Not true, usually what drains the battery is your apps misusing GPS or you enabled Location reporting. Location reporting really kills battery. As for Bluetooth, I have nothing to comment on that.
I will say as much as we perceive most of these to be common sense I learned a bit. Also I never have since I've owned android phones ever turned off GPS. It only uses it when it needs to. Such as browsing Facebook, maps etc. I also have Google now turned off so it shouldn't be pulling location data in the background now. I never use Bluetooth. My wife has it on all the time on her note 2 and she still gets the through the day with a good enough percentage.

Exactly. Plus you can get yourself into bootloops if your phone can't handle certain low values. Only time I messed with voltage was with my sgs1 and 2.

I know it's not the point of this thread but I have chargers in almost every room in my house, in my cars, and at my desk at work. I leave everything on all the time. I want to use the hell out of this thing. I don't care if the battery degrades faster this way (which I don't think it does) because for the short time I own this phone I want to use every feature of it.

Exactly. I have a charger at home next to my bed. I have one at work and a car charger. I'd rather be charging as I need then be pushing hard to get stats and be in a jam where I need to make an emergency call or my wife will be trying to call and my phone is dead. I might just be easy to please but as long as I can use my phone and still have some juice left before I go to bed I'm okay. I don't need it to last me without charge more than a day. I've owned a lot of different devices and never once complained about battery life or asked in any forum about battery life. Now I will say there are those people that can't or don't have access to chargers all the time and it can be an inconvenience to not have good battery life.

I have no such issues.
Install a custom launcher like nova launcher and delete the original launcher
Even if google now is turned off in the default launcher 1 accidental swipe to the left will turn on google now. Works for me anyway
i've done NONE of those things, yet my battery lasts about 28-30 hours...
battery savings has more to do with how you use your phone, and with what apps, than little tweaks to the core functionality of the Android OS.

Is horrible battery life normal?

Hello I recently picked up a s5 that is on the latest update ANG3 and the battery life is far from anything to brag about. I mean like maybe 7hours with an hour of screen on time before the phone is at 20%. I have done some searching and all I see are wake locks and not going to deep sleep cause problems but I'm not seeing either of those in my battery stats. I disable many apps that aren't needed such as lookout and many of the bloat apps hoping one of those was the cause but still to no avail
I'm at a loss as to what to check now any help would be appreciated
I can usually go 2 days without charging and have 4 hours of screen on time. Maybe you have a defective unit with a bad chip?
At work my phone lasts all day, recharge at night. On weekends I don't even charge it, it will hold a decent charge over a 3-day weekend. Running DK 3.0, nothing special beyond that.
hey guys, battery drains depends upon each and every single option you tap on ! even the signal clash may cause battery to drain faster and enabling mobile data wil drain much...
if you want your battery usage to be controlled, jus root your s5, and clock it using, no frills
you can flash a custom kernel to make it much better !

install no frills cpu or set cpu from playstore. it wil claim for root permission. grant it....
then keep set the maximum clock frequency values to the max and minimum clock frequency values to the min. and select governor as power saver....
learn much abt it in google
that's it...your're done.

That is unusually bad. Even out of the box (with all the crap enabled) I could go almost all day.
gsam battery monitor, better battery stats, and wakelock detector should all help you find offenders. I also found the 'top' utility in elixir to be useful to me because I would see Security Storage peg the cpu frequently (phone would even get warm), but the other utilities tend to lump that in with Android System. (In my case that was mostly caused by the newest Amazon appstore app).
If you can't find a specific app that is a problem that you can just remove, the really useful tuning needs root, to freeze bloat, unbounce wakelocks (the Unbounce xposed module is the greatest thing since sliced bread), fully utilize greenify, and so on.
It's possible, if you got a used device, that you have a crappy battery (maybe someone bought a cheap knockoff battery and put it in there).
I'm not a battery saving expert by any stretch of the imagination...but I've been playing with my biggest battery consumer...
Google play services....
I shut it down for 12 hours today...and improved my battery life by 27% over yesterday..
Just my observation on one of the many services that force our batteries into extinction...g

Battery Drain?

Recently my nexus 6 has been having pretty poor battery life. It estimates about 5 hours left on a full charge when before I would have close to double that. Im running franco kernel r25 on stock android 5.1 build LMY47I. I've heard the new google play services update could be a problem too.. which is version 7.0.99 if that helps. Please, any help would be great. Thanks!

There are lots of settings but wakeloc detector will tell you real quick what's going on. After that we can go from there. Also you might update to Franco's test build r26, its a couple pages back in his thread. I think it fixed a few wake issues.

franco himself said that build would not effect wakelocks in anyway. It just modified the idle loop in the cpu scheduler to allow the cpu to idle easier.

I thought I had seen the opposite posted in his thread. Could be wrong though.
just copy and pasted his post. At least thats what I got from this post.
"If you wanna test a new feature of r26 which is a patch from upstream that instantly idles (idle is not offline, it's a shallow power state when there no jobs running on the core to preserve energy) if a core is running with <= 1 job instead of going through a idle_balance() loop which goes on to decide if the core should or shouldn't enter idle, and it's not cheap. With this patch it also reduces the overall load_average since it reduces idle_balance() calls by 75%. In theory it should improve battery life. boot.img attached
I don't have numbers, but I sent the patch to imoseyon and he's already testing it. With your help we'll get some pretty numbers soon. This is completely agnostic of wakelocks, so if you have them, you're on your own, like you always are."
This is what you want see in wakeloc detector. As close to 0% as you can get. Just find out what's running/waking up and start working on stopping those.
Wakelock Detector is great but I honestly like Better Battery Stats better myself. Look for the XDA version on here, it's free

I know a ton of people love gsam, but whenever I've tried using it, it just gave me that bloated app feeling. If it works for you that's all that matters.
I use gsam also just to check how things are running. Greenify once wakeloc detector tells me what's going on.
I downloaded an app called battery doctor and that has helped a lot. Going on 31 hours with moderate use
But google play services is one of the things draining the most of my battery.

I too feel like I'm struggling to get passed 1 day with really hardly any use. My phone sits on my desk most of the day and I peek at it if it goes off. Most of the time when I do get a notification, I check my gmail on the PC, as well my messages via Verizon Messages (though I still use Hangouts on the phone). It never fails by the time I get home, I'm usually around 40% battery and I feel like I've hardly touched the device all day.
I've download WLD which I've used on previous devices so hopefully I can post back after today and see what's draining my battery.

Experiments searching for better battery life

Please reply with your own real experiences.
Q. Does rooted Greenify really improve battery life?
I use it, but I can't say it makes a huge difference.
Q. Does Package Disabler Pro really improve battery life?
I use it, but my co-worker doesn't, and his Note 5 lasts basically as long as mine.
Experiment:
Maybe what would be the most useful is using Tasker to really deal with battery life. I'm thinking about shutting off wifi and data when not needed, etc.
Has anyone tested something like this?
Thanks!:good:
Hey gaston. So I haven't rooted my note 5 just yet but I spent a year and a half with my opo trying all the permutations you mention.
Rooted greenify I feel works a lot like doze on marshmallow. If you are gaming you tubing etc constantly you won't really feel a difference.
Tasker is awesome and you will notice a difference in battery life to an extent but it goes way way beyond in terms of automation. If you end up using tasker profiles based on location and wifi you may just end up using more juice.
Package disabler using the profiles I have tried so far marginally improves battery life but nothing sizeable. I feel it makes the phone snappy by freeing some ram but that might just be a placebo.
Ergo I run the phone in full beast mode now and make use of the fast charge once in the evening for a half hour and that's good to get me through the day.

I appreciate your honest reply. Many people here in the forums seem to lie a lot about performance and battery life.
Maybe keeping the phone charged is the best and simple solution.
That being said you are rooted so go ahead and try the custom roms out there. That is the one sure fire way to see a difference in performance and battery life.

I've been using Greenify (unrooted), Package Disabler Pro, and dark themes to maximize my battery life. But I think Tasker does the most to help me conserve battery power.
When I am at work, Tasker turns off WiFi, Bluetooth, all sounds, and drops screen brightness to about 20%. I only turn on GPS when I am using an app that requires it. Tasker turns my brightness and volumes down when I am connected to WiFi at home.
I think these simple actions with Tasker help my battery life more than just about anything else. I average about 6.5 hours of SOT, and I still have 30%+ left on my battery when I get home.
But it all depends on how you use your phone. YouTube and video games consume more juice than TapaTalk and light Internet browsing.
Just try to uninstall or disable facebook app via settings, and feel the difference. I read on Internet that Facebook app known as battery eater. Just try it and give some response here. Hope that help.
It depends. Some people want the extreme battery savings and are willing to sacrifice a lot of performance on the phone, dim screen, no GPS, etc.
I prefer my phone to operate at its full potential all the time. I don't want to mess with settings if something came up and someone wanted to see a picture and I have to worry about setting brightnesses and whatnot.
For the most part, most of those apps are only getting a marginal amount of better battery. Maybe 20 or 30 minutes more charge over the day.
During work, I rarely use my phone because I'm actually working lol. Sometimes I use it for work but the quick charge takes care of whatever I lose during my lunch hour
I use GSAM the monitor was actually using the most battery in just address what's needed. The only feature that I usually do turn off and keep up for the most part is my Wi-Fi. In the areas I use my phone the most, my average download speeds over cellular are over a gigabit

greeify - yes, only if you know greenified app was a battery drainer.
package disabler - yes, only if you know those services were battery drainers.
I use betterbatterystats app to find out what is draining the battery.
biggest culprit for me was phone not going into Deep Sleep. If you can remedy deep sleep issue, your battery will last much longer. I currently get around 1 percent drain every 2 hours when my phone's screen is off. that's with wifi on all the time.
Best way for me was installing a custom rom. most custom roms will have battery issues fixed. I use dr ketan's rom. it's awesome.
Another way without rooting that I found out, is disable google services. google play services and all google services. if you do that, watch your battery last forever.
I forget which app, but you could make profiles so you could enable or disable all google services, and google play services. I mean, you don't download new apps all the time, right?
So only enable google play services when you want to download apps and turn it off for the rest of time.
and of course deal with bloatware.

I'm glad you asked, i've been using greenify amplify and powernap as of recently, and no it does not improve battery life automatically but it helps to keep your running services in check.
I've had couple of times that chrome was running in background, despite i closed it, means it drains battery when your screen is off, greenify prevents that from happening which result in battery improvement or more precisely, helps you manage the services right.
However to my surprise, calibrating the battery via batterycalibaration app or L Speed tweaks apk(both need root), it stabilized my battery after couple of cycles, i did a test charge the phone to 100 then using performance governor, i put Angry birds 2 till the battery reached 5% so i could see the SOT, before this step i had 2h 45m but AFTER calibration i had 4h 30m, that a LOT for performance non stop ab2 gaming.
It helps with regular uses as well, i also used repair battery to make sure that battery health is in check, hope all that helps

yea, any rom install requires root. I thought about not rooting my note5 for a while. damn knox count that disables samsung pay + much harder to sell and lowers the resale value. HATE samsung for doing that. I mean, if I flash a stock rom, everything should be back to normal. ONLY company that makes the resale value of phone drop forever, if you root!
sorry, i digress.
dr ketan's rom is very clean and snappy. he only removed knox and carrier apps, and left everything stock. didn't take away any functions, but added "actually useful" features. insane amount of features without slowing down the phone. it feels like stock rom without the bloat and the usual "limited" feeling of stock. battery life is improved also. especially the deep sleep. what i noticed was that, when i was on stock, deep sleep was pretty good already, then I rooted and deep sleep was out of wack. I tried everything for the deep sleep to be better, but didn't work well. so i flashed dr ketan's rom, and deep sleep is now actually better than stock.

Yeah, there is a pretty steep learning curve when it comes to Tasker. On the bottom right hand corner in the Tasker app, click on the question-mark icon. From there you can click on "Guides" for user tips and tutorials. Click on "Userguide" for the manual.
GPS cannot be set without root, since Gingerbread OS I believe. I manually turn it on and off when I need it. I leave WiFi on during the time frame I am at work. Tasker turns it back on at quitting time. When I get home and connect to my home WiFi, Tasker sets my brightness, sound levels, etc.

Battery Life and Wakelocks

Hi guys,
so i newly setup my phone recently with OOS 4.0.3 in order to have a clean phone for the most efficient use.
For my surprise, for the first time using the 3T my energy efficiency was very good, i managed to get 4,5h SOT with the first 50% because i had almost no drain when the screen was turned off.
I attached the screenshots.
Basically, i just flashed OOS 4.0.3 and the newest franco kernel and magisk for root. I didnt use greenify (which i usually do), just the strict standby option in the android settings.
So far so good, but now to the part i cant understand.
I installed gsam battery monitor and gave it root access, so i can have detailed battery information.
From that point, i experienced again the standby drain combined with wakelooks, as u can see in the screenshot starting around 60% of the battery.
So far i uninstalled the app, i used greenify, but i cant get back when i had no wakelocks.
Is it really because of Gsam Battery? How can get away the standby drain without setting up the phone completely new?
PS: I also deactivated some of the access rights of apps, especially for play services.
Is it possible that they regain the access by themselves or that google play services is draining the battery

Is it really because of Gsam Battery? How can get away the standby drain without setting up the phone completely new?
PS: I also deactivated some of the access rights of apps, especially for play services.
Is it possible that they regain the access by themselves or that google play services is draining the battery

Don't deactivate app rights of play services. It would break the functionality randomly and u won't know what happened. Just enable and reboot. Next time something happens, check the stat in gsam battery monitor. It's a good app and I am using it from 3 years.
It's not gsam I've had it installed on every phone for years and I always get amazing battery life.
I dont use google apps at all besides gmail and maps sometimes. But ill try around if it makes a difference.
I also cant believe that GSAM really is the problem there, but i didnt change anything else, i was just surprised of the good battery life and wanted to see the characteristics of battery statistics when i have a normal standby drain.
And immediatelly from that point on, the standby drain changed as u can see on the screenshots, even after uninstalling GSAM.
I now get 2h SOT with 50%, not 4,5.
So, is it possible that anything influencing that is changing by itself?
I didnt install any app or changed any setting, all i use was setted up in the beginning (franco, magisk, viper, all apps)
Yes google play store and google play services if you downloaded it and installed it that way? Google ruins battery life very randomly. If you restored a titanium backup or sideloaded the app then I have no clue. Even if you didnt do anything different there are a ton of things that can go wrong with android in the background. Recharge and reboot and start over.

tried everything already + wiping cache/dalvik
I just now wiped also system and dirty flashed the ROM + the stuff i need. Ill see it that solves the deal.
I just cant accept to not have the control over my phone as thats one of the advantages of rooting. I got the same battery life with same usage with my 2,5 year old OnePlus One.
I run the same apps on every phone and this phone has doubled the performance and battery compared to my nexus 6 note 5 and nexus 6p. First phone I've owned that actually sleeps when I turn off the screen.

The OPO with CM back then was a dream.
Are u using any apps or adjust settings in order to tweak that behavior?

I've been on CM13 since the day it came out Dec 11th. I was getting amazing battery and standby on stock since I got the phone late November. I use xposed for tweaking everything but no modules or apps or settings for battery savings.

Hi guys,
so i newly setup my phone recently with OOS 4.0.3 in order to have a clean phone for the most efficient use.

I found 4.0.3 would get wakelocks from location service. I have installed firmware from OOS 3.5.4 and used Leandroid, since then I've had my old battery life back.

I like that app, but its only fully functional with SuperSU. Do u know if there is any similar app also working with Magisk?

Which app? Magisk?
Magisk has its own root now. Fyi

I know, but the app still asks for root permission with SuperSU for all the foot options

Some parts of it only work with SuperSU, sure. The important bit that fixes the MRa big does unfortunately.
Not found a magisk equivalent, but I'm eager to find one!
I just recently got my 3T two weeks ago running OOS 4.0.3 and I also notice a lot of wakelocks, especially when on mobile data (3G/4G).
I am still tinkering to figure out what are the root causes for wakelocks in this case.
I suggest you install BetterBatteryStats from XDA, it does provide a lot of good info. GSAM is good too but I prefer BBS. You can grant it permissions to Battery_Stats if you are not rooted.
Here are my findings so far:
Google Services likes to access the GPS a lot, so I turned of Location History. This resulted in fewer wakelocks when the screen is off.
I have changed the GPS and set it to GPS Only so that it doesn't use the cell towers and WiFi to help determine a location. I am not sure if this makes a difference for wakelocks yet.
I know Nougat has doze, I am not sure how well it works...fortunately there is Aggressive Doze in the battery section of the settings. I have not tested this yet but this is something I will look into once I have determined all others aspects that may be causing wakelocks.
I do have the LED notification light enabled and I am using LightFlow to manage it. It works in conjunction with the built-in LED settings from OOS. This is fine, but I do believe this may cause wakelock issues.
Once again, in my experience, I get a lot of wakelocks when I am on mobile data compared to being on WiFi and I am not sure why there is a difference.
