[Q] Someone help me with my battery life - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have tried everything. Stock, Franco and Lean Kernel, UVing by 25 as well as 50mhz, have greenified everything I can that I don't need. But I just can't seem to get more than 2 hours of SOT out of this phone.
i'm not really the kind of person prepared to shut everything(bluetooth, data, location etc) off to save battery. I bought a smartphone so I want it to be smart.
Some screenshots: first two are on leankernel, the last one is from an attempt today with franco right after I finished charging it up(phone barely held a day)

turn off adaptive brightness, and lower your brightness to 20% or lower. i keep mine at about 15%, and see about 5.5h sot. for every 20% i raise my brightness, i get 1h sot less.

That's why google did a bad job to deliver apps with a light material design on devices with an amoled screen.
Good apps does not have grey fonts on a white background. Or have options to change those colors.

5.5 hours of actual screen-on-time isn't horrible. I usually get around 4h but I don't care about stuff like turning down brightness or disabling bluetooth. My N6 easily lasts through the whole day - sometimes 1.5 days (with only light use, though). And if the battery (for whatever reason) gets close to zero Moto provided us with a gift called turbo charger...

It looks to me like you have pretty bad signal with the 69% with no signal. Your phone will keep searching for a network which is going to destroy your battery. Since you have WiFi constantly connected try turning of mobile data and see if that helps.

no. 5.5 hours of screen on time is normally considered very good.

Don't you guys swap in the Team Blackout inverted apps? It adds about 30-40% more screen on time on AMOLED screens. It won't help in areas like settings etc if you are stock based but they have all of the Google apps, Spotify, Netflix, etc inverted and transparent. It always gave me great screen on time on my AMOLED devices. When people asked about my numbers, that was my first suggestion.

i use layers, which is a new light weight open source theme engine. no cm involved! it was started by sony, then some devs here with a n6, took over. i use the pich black or out space layers. pich black themes the rom black, and also themes the gapps black, as well as the google launcher

Battery Life After Update to 4.4.4 (At&t)

I accidentally updated my phone to 4.4.4 about 2 weeks ago(didn't want to update b/c i do not like the new dialer). For the first week i didn't notice any difference in the phone. The past week though my phone's been dying very quick compared to normal the two biggest users are the screen and voice calls as usual so I am not sure what this is due to. I would like to figure this out though as it is beginning to become a problem.
Need as many screen shots as you can post to help.
If you're rooted, then we can see wakelocks too.
Try Gsam, it says miles more than the stock battery usage screens. Go from 100 percent to about 10 and take the screen shots. No reboots during, or Gsam will reset.
If you aren't rooted... Will be a little harder.
If you want to maximize your battery, see the first 4 posts in the Battery thread in my signature. It's for the N5...but it all applies to the Moto as well. ?

Nothing in your screenshots seem out of place.
What are you doing in those 8 minutes? And what screen brightness?
I'm thinking it's your usage, that's all.
Without seeing wakelocks, it's hard to find issues. According to your graph though, your phone seems to sleep well.
Is location on? Google now? Are you using the options in Android device manager? Is location reporting on? Those are all battery eaters.
If you play a game for 8 minutes, with the screen bright, or even leaving it on auto brightness in a well lit spot... Would be completely normal to use 12 percent.
---------- Post added at 07:33 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:29 PM ----------
For the screen to use 49 percent of your battery in 13 hours, with only 2 hours screen time, tells me it's running very bright.
Keeping it dimmer, and adjusting manually would probably cut the drain down a lot.
I use "display brightness" from the play store. Very customizable and you get a slider always on your screen.
In that time is just text messages and yes the screen brightness is auto. But like I said this is draining it nor then it has in the past. I don't use Google now, or location services.

Please try Gsam... Even without root. Go from 100 to about 10 and post screens from it. Including kernel wakelocks and the "screen" screen. ?
Just texting, that's a lot of drain. Especially if you have those things off completely. Location especially. Is it off, or you just aren't using it to your knowledge?

Location services can be linked to all sorts of battery issues. The first step is turning it right off to see if the problems stop. Then go from there. ?
My European Moto X also drains within 10 hours of moderate use. Also for me, the screen uses about 40% of the battery while I have almost no screen on time. could this be the Active Display feature that is draining the phone?
my phone is bricked ... anyone have AT&T 4.4.4 ?

Battery Life on Android M

Hellow everyone,
I hope by now many of us have already flashed the developer preview of Android M.
This thread is dedicated to the Battery life of Nexus 5 (Hammerhead) on the developer preview build of Android M.
Please share your battery life experience, SoT, and how much battery is saved in the new "Doze" state.
Where is Doze in the preview? I had mine sleeping all night last night where do you look for it

But where is your sot?
It's only been out 24 hours. You need to give it at least a few charge cycles before even thinking about comparing battery life!
Last week I swapped in a new OEM battery manufactured this January after 18 months of use having a launch day device. Hopefully with that and this new M battery optimizations I'll regain my KitKat battery life.

It's a new feature involving what's essentially decreased sync rates when the phone hasn't beet touched in a while. Its automatic, and not something you can turn on. In the settings, you can disable the feature on an per-app basis.
---------- Post added at 02:49 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:47 PM ----------
Oh yeah, and as krs360 said, its so new, battery state is a bit wonky right now and itll take a few cycles to have a sense of how the optimizations change things. Personally, my phone's battery life has taken a huge hit these first two cycles.
After 5 hours of my normal usage, I'm at 80% still. Pretty damn good if you ask me. Better than the usual 50-60%.

Guys, here you can see my results today.
I unplugged the phone at 7am, then music from speaker for about 20 minutes, mid volume. WiFi.
From 7.30 am to 14.30 (2.30 pm), I have been under 4G.
In this period, I've used Facebook, Chrome, and listened to music from Spotify in streaming (headphones), 10 minutes of Youtube.
From 14.30 to 18.30 I've been under WiFi, Facebook and Chrome.
From 18.30 to 20.30 under 3G, Facebook and Chrome again.
I have used 169 MB of data by 3G/4G. 2h of screen, Google Now activated, localization on Save Battery mode, downloaded an app. During the day, I have been syncing Gmail, Kik, Whatsapp, Twitter, Facebook. I have chatted via Whatsapp for hours.
Manual luminosity, around 1/3.

Mine has been brutal on the N6, Google services reporting 36% battery drain although I suspect it is being misreported.
Mine is about 30-50% worse, but I'll give it a few more days. Chrome and Google Play Services seem to love keeping the radio active. To be fair, my signal was iffy today (driving around), so I wasn't on Wifi at all.

Battery drain

So I am currently on 5.1.1 rooted with Franco kernel. Before updating to 5.1.1 I had 3h and 44 mins SOT and still 16% battery left. I read that flashing Franco kernel will help my battery but I am currently on 55% battery with 1h and 40 min of SOT. I have greenifyed all the battery draining apps like Facebook etc and I don't have any widgets expect Google keep. I have attached couple of pictures if someone could please look through them? I did several factory resets and still the same battery life. I am just browsing and watching YouTube videos. Now I only get 3hrs and 15 minutes before my phones dies
It's driving me nuts, I read that Franco kernel will help my battery life but it's still the same. I have around 40-50% screen brightness.
Have you done any modifications to your CPU or anything like that?

No nothing. Just flashed Franco kernel free app so I can't adjust any governor
regardless what you were told, flashing kernels does not help battery. its your use and the quality of your signal that will determine your battery life. kernels might help you in saving battery, because they all change how the CPU works, but its up to you to save battery, not the kernel.

Yeah I read that you'll get better battery life with Franco but I don't know. Is there something unusual from my screenshots? Is there anything I can do? I mean I am using my phone as normal as possible and I even turned of lte and running only on 3g. I just want to know what the culprit is. I even removed viber but it's still the same issue

what percent brightness do you use? I keep mine at about 0-10% mostly, and average around 5.5h sot. if I raise my brightness to about 30-35%, I lose about an hour of sot. but really, its all about what you are doing with your phone. if you are a heavy gamer, you'll see much less sot because CPU intensive games will go through the battery quickly.
Your best shot is getting the full version of FK app and then controlling your CPU.

actually, 0-10% isn't that dark. if you set adaptive brighrnes, 0-10% will actually be darker. 0-10% is fine for me, unless out in the sun. but with 50% brightness, I'd say 3.5h sot is actually fine.

Just want to know really if my apps and system is behaving correctly. If it's the brightness that is the issue then it's a relief. But I read that everyone got better battery life with 5.1.1 except me :-/ I mean I have Bluetooth off, gps off, hepatic feedback and sounds etc all are off. Even Google now is off

no, adaptive brightness is bad for battery life.
and for the majority, battery life is exactly the same on 5.1.1, like before. as many people that claim better battery life, just as many, if not more, will say its the same, or worse.

first off, paying for the full app will give you what, more control of your CPU? do you know how to control tour CPU? if so, there are many FREE CPU control apps. learn what you are doing first, then buy the app. secondly, no one that uses 50% brightness gets great battery life. the screen uses the most battery, raising brightness to 50% will just let it use MORE battery.

What's keeping my phone awake? (Screenshots)

I finally took the plunge and rooted. I've never had to in the past, but right now I'm trying to figure out what the hell is sucking up my battery.
Here's what I have so far: http://imgur.com/a/ki8bY
Having this scenario, what would you say chews away at my battery?
I think Spotify is at the top of the list because I was actually using it, so I don't think it is an issue. However, when I look at screen on time vs awake time, I see numerous occasions where the phone is awake without me using it.
That graph just shows us surface of the iceberg, use better battery stats
Or GSAM and/or Wakelock detector.
You would be getting a good estimate of what's eating your battery.

I just saw the pics, i have the same issue sometimes, idle drain is terrible and have no clue whats causing it.. possibly some of the google apps installed as system app

Mine is pretty good, stock 4.0.3+ElementalX kernel with default settings
i also have this issue its just android taking lots of battery and not letting the device sleep
I had the same issue, greenify and naptime solved it and i know drain 0.2% an hour overnight on 4. , Android's built in doze is still not good enough imo.

greenify root mode agressive doze eabled, naptime aggressive doze enabled. Not sure really of the benefit of having both as they seem to do the same thing but i saw better results using both, naptime doesn't mess with whatsapp but greenfiy would do so that leads me to believe they work differently.

This is insane.
A kernel can make that much of a difference???

yes, give it a try
I don't have the knowledge to do it. I could barely root this thing following step by step instructions, but I don't want to wonder off too far into the weeds as I don't know my way back if something happens

Follow the instructions for Elemental X kernel tweaking and you should be getting between 6 to 10 hours of SOT time.

Thanks for the video.
However, I sort of agree with the first comment. You have a beast of a phone and you're underclocking it to achieve better battery life? Sounds strange :S
@Lancez What settings are you running on yours? Plain default as it comes out of the box?
I didn't bother with greenify anymore, I just enabled aggressive doze in the oneplus battery settings itself and it works similarly.

what are your governor settings set for, default interactive?
I get average like 7 hours of SOT with like 24-26 hours off charge....
maybe like <1% drain overnight
And I dont need to put my phone to charge over night anymore \o/ lol

Nothing special, ElementalX kernel with default settings, didn't tweak or change anything in aroma installer. disabled touch boost from CPU tab in EXM app from play store, try it it's worth the little money.
I deleted S Health and Swarm and I feel like I'm doing better today: http://imgur.com/a/7mta9
However, I have an S3 watch, so not having S Health is kind of a bummer

Mi 9 great battery life

I've had my device for a day now and I was worried at first weather the 3300mah battery would last a day's use and I can gladly say this device is optimised very well.
With 4hours of on screen time with 50% battery left this device has met my expectations and further.
I've hardly come of this phone all day.
So for me it's a thumps up if anyone is worried about battery life it should be perfectly fine for a day+ use.

I've actually so far experienced the opposite today I had under 3 hours SOT and was at around 35%, though I did notice that high accuracy was enabled as well as WiFi scanning.
Will continue to monitor....
Screen on Time is a meaningless figure to judge battery life.
For instance - Browsing the web will drain way more battery life than watching a YouTube video
Th thing is with the MI9 auto brightness is way to aggressive.
If you use lot of outside it will drain lot faster than indoors.
Indoors 6 till 7 hours SOT no problem. Lot of outside 5 till 6 hours or. Something like that.

I've had it on manual
What I have noticed is when I was outdoors, there was some sort of outdoor mode being activated, so not the auto brightness but the automatic contrast. Got it in standard now and so will see how tomorrow on a full charge. Still though, I could swear that colours (the black theme on my SwiftKey keyboard) were adjusting in bright sunlight.
Will indeed keep an eye on this, but yeah so far battery is a let down, and that has been with full 4g signal, Bluetooth off etc
A friend sell his Mi9 after 3 days. With 2 sim cards and 50/50 wifi/lte he get about ~5h SOT without gaming and youtube after <1day.
With Youtube he can get easy 8h SOT but thats normal for Amoled.

Yes that auto contrast setting I have noticed too. Very strange. I can't get it off either.

I'm gonna report it as a bug.
Also as Cell Standby drain is high, I've just adjusted this setting, found here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-8/how-to/fix-battery-drain-mobile-standby-t3883840/page1
To add at my SOT I use the MI9 in dark mode all the time.

Quick update: seems better already since i changed those settings. Got 30 mins SOT and still at 95%.
Will see how the rest of the day goes!
Hi,
I think something is wrong with the Cell standby usage.
I tried the fix for disabling Chinese antennas, but still it's like this.
https://imgur.com/a/EZD8Xmt
I'm on China version (I bought the mobile in China actually).
Any advice? Shall I switch to Global?
And it looks like that auto brightness seems to consume more battery than manual, is it just for me or something for more people?

I too had the bad drain but switching to LTE/WCDMA helped me so far I think.
I'm at 60% 2 hours SOT and I've been taking lots of photos, such switching that setting helped lots!
My brightness is on auto and seems to adapt pretty well I thought.
WiFi scanning is off.
And I don't have dark mode enabled.
Not much gaming tho but YouTube streaming.
Coming from OnePlus 6t and pixel 3 I'm doing the same things but noticing better battery life so for the 3300mah I think it's doing pretty well indeed I'm very satisfied
I never use auto brightness except when I want to use my phone in full sun (beach..) to activate the boost brightness.
My sot is 6 hours by day. Very good (level of the $9 /$9 plus).

But on the link it said the settings go back after restart of the phone.
Is this not happening with the Mi9?

It does. Hopefully it will get fixed in a future update in GLOBAL roms...
I have just updated to Global 10.2.26.0 ROM from 10.2.24.0 and I'm getting over 9hrs screen on time! I'm getting over 17-20 hrs with that screen on time so I would say it's doing great! I watch a good bit of movies and YouTube on it as well as do a lot of pictures and video. Do I do use it rather hard and get those numbers still!
Im on a PFAEUXM rom, i've found that the battery life is good when you are using the phone, i'm geussing the screen and the CPU are really efficient, but the standby drain when i don't use the phone is pretty bad..

Dude I just got 31hrs with 6hrs and 23 min SOT and I didnt even let it die. I use a lot of photography, video [email protected] I also watch a lot of movies and in-between I do a good bit of YouTube or Twitter.
I can get over 9hrs easy anytime. If I just got for maximum SOT I've passed 11hrs many times and never ran the Mi 9 dead. I mean sometimes it's within a few % but I always put it back on charge if that's the case.
I leave the brightness on auto but it seems I always have to go in the menu and push it higher to my liking.
Now understand this. This is mostly indoors except for when I'm shooting video. I never take it off auto brightness, I just push it up. I have it on increased contrast. Nothing more. I optimize it at least once a day and I clean my Cached file daily. That is the extent of what I do. I have accubattery app on it so I watch to make sure it truly is at 100% before taking it off.
I have no issues with SOT, oh and I always have WiFi on as well.
You say you get 6hrs but only 6hrs SOT with no combined time with it?
