I am really stumped here...
When I first installed the NEX, my contacts where being sync'd from iCloud to my mobile devices via "Smoothsync for Cloud Contacts". This has always worked flawlessly and when I first paired my phone, the contacts were instantly read by the Pioneer and shown in its phone book.
But... I noticed that I could not send a hangout message to any of my contacts using the voice command. Evidently there is some required profile info Google applies behind the scenes to "Google" contacts that was not present in my "iCloud to Contacts" method of getting contacts from my Mac to my Android devices.
So, I moved my contacts to "Google Contacts", removed the Smoothsync account from my phone (removing my contacts from "Contacts"), and enabled syncing from my Google account. After a fresh sync, my contacts were once again displayed in the "Contacts" app, and within a few minutes I could send hangouts messages using the voice commands without getting the annoying "no profile" error.
But then I notice that only the "Me" contact is shown in the Pioneer's phone book. I delete the pairing on both devices, reboot, clear cache, re-pair, etc, etc, etc, and no change. I then edit my "Me" record on the phone and reconnect to the Pioneer and the edits are seen by the Pioneer... so it is obviously connecting to and reading from the phone contact's.
I then create a new contact on the phone, just to rule out something being munged by the contacts now in Google Contacts synced from my Mac, reconnect to the Pioneer, and still just the "Me" entry.
I can also export my contacts to a vcf file and send that over bluetooth to the Pioneer and they imported properly, so nothing seems to be munged with the data.
Now I know that I don't really need this, but the fact that it is behaving unexpectedly is driving me NUTS (I know, OCD)!
PLEASE... someone who is familiar with this mechanism... help me figure this out.
Thanks!

I have noticed this issue for awhile now. If i make a change to a contact on my phone it never gets pushed to GMail. Has anyone else noticed this? I have made sure Contacts was checked in Data Synchronization, i have even made changes, unchecked it then rechecked it and watched it sync. But those changes never make it to Google's servers. I know it worked in RC33 but i don't think it has worked since.
I do a lot of flashing and constantly keep losing new contacts or updates because of this. Its kind of a pain in the arse to remember what and who i changed in my contacts to update when i am at a machine.
Anyone?
Well you can buy mybackup pro and backup your contacts...But make sure you uncheck syncing of contacts in the data/synchronization settings. Never ran into that problem before.
you can try force-updating.
after you make a change, go to settings>data syncronization, uncheck and then check again the "Contacts" field, it will force a sync.
You should consider moving to a cupcake build already too, if only for the camera
Same deal
I have been having problems trying to sync up my contacts too. Everything is correct and the way that I want it on my phone and I want to push those updates to Google, but it constantly fails. Sometimes it fails with an little exclamation point next to the sync icon and sometimes it doesn't. I have tried it on both my rooted and unrooted g1 and I still have no luck even though I switch the sim card. I use mybackup pro and have been for a while but the file output format is nothing that can be uploaded to google (ie csv file) so I'm not sure where to go from here. Anyone have any ideas as to why the sync fails? My only thought is that Google refuses to sync because I am trying to sync a large number of contacts on my phone, with a very small number of contacts on google servers. Xmarks (formerly foxmarks) for Firefox does the same thing, it won't allow you to sync a large amount of information one way without giving you a popup message so your away of it just in case you don't realize that you are overwriting data. Maybe Google servers are similar only without the warning message?
My contacts NEVER sychronized with Google. Gmail works fine, MyMaps also synchronize but contacts and calendar never. And I don't even have these options in Data Synchronization menu (only Auto-synk and Gmail). Any ideea how I can fix this?
Thank you!
Currently, I keep getting force close errors when sending messages and creating or editing contacts, I really want to fix this so I thought I might as well try and root my phone at the same time.
Here are my questions:
1. Should I fix these force close errors before I root my phone. If so, how?
2. Does rooting my G1 mean I'll lose my messages, contacts, etc?
3. Is there anyway I can save my messages, contacts, etc before I root my phone and reinstate them afterwards? (If they are lost in the process).
I hope my questions aren't too stupid!
Thanks!
Giggity giggity...... don't bother fixing the fc's, they would be fixed in the process. You will lose messages, call log, browser bookmarks, internal save apps, almost everything on your phone when you wipe it. Your contacts are synced with gmail and will auto restore, any apps you purchased will be availible for redownload in my downloads in the market, they are also linked to your gmail. Back-up wise, the only programs that I know back-up on root only or you have to pay for use. So you are **** out of luck there
Gridlock pretty much said it all. But I will add one thing tho, there are apps that will allow you to back up your sms first without root. Just go to the market and look up "backup" and you will see a bunch of apps that you might want.
If you are having FC while sending messages my personal opinion would be to not backup and restore anything that has to do with those messages. Just imo.
Make sure you have data sync turned on and you do a manual sync before you root to ensure you have an up-to-date backup of your contacts.

Thanks for the answers guys. I've come across another damn problem now that I've been trying to back up my contacts. I have a bunch of numbers on my phone that appear to not be in any 'sync group'...I select all contacts in sync group and then make my contacts sync. I check my g-mail account and its just got all my e-mail addresses but not my phone numbers. When I sync My Contacts it sends only a few numbers. I can view "Contacts With Numbers" but I cant seem to sync them.
Also, when I select 'all contacts' to sync I get that damn red exclaimation mark.
In an attempt to sort this, I selected all my e-mail contacts in 'All Contacts' and sent them to a new group called 'E-mail'. Then I selected to delete 'All Contacts' expecting to retain them in my new 'E-mail' group and it deleted ALL my bloody contacts including 'My Contacts'. I've now lost the few numbers under 'My Contacts' (even on my phone somehow...) and all my damn E-mails!
Can someone please tell me how the hell I can sync "Contacts with numbers" onto my g-mail so I can root my ****ing phone!!!
Are the contacts you lost still on your gmail account if so it will prob just resync them and you still have your contacts on your sim card also well just the ones you had before you started using this phone. The most I ever backup is my app data, bookmarks always give me a fc on the browser when I restore. I don't worry bout contacts though since gmail handles that
Well this is my problem. My g-mail had none of my contacts! When I got this phone it was a fresh sim card with nothing on. I put all my numbers in by hand. My numbers were last (fully) synced on 27th Jan 09. Everytime I sync, I get My Contacts only. All the other numbers fail to sync, I'm guessing because they're not in any group. Even if I select all numbers to sync they don't go to my G-Mail. I had about 15 number sync in My Contacts (before I deleted the buggers). Now I'll have to get those back.
I need a way of putting all my numbers that aren't in My Contacts, into My Contacts to Google will sync them! I'm guessing this is because they were put into my phone because the update where Google made all newly entered numbers go into My Contacts...Hmm
Right, I've sorted it.
Downloaded an app from the the market place called ExportContacts. Worked like a treat. It wrote all my contacts to a .csv. Simply imported them on G-Mail. Added them to contacts, deleted all of them on my phone and re-synced. AT LAST I CAN ROOT!

woot glad you got it to work and this is good info for general use as well
i want to transfer my contacts from phone to gmail account. But although it's 'sync on' @my O 2x, it syncs everything except the contacts. I'm using fr19. Any idea how to solve this?
thanks.
Sync on doesn't mean all options are, if you tap on the account you'll get a breakdown of what's available.
Yes, everything is checked. I even pressed the sync button. But still when i open gmail from PC, all my contacts aren't there. Only the starred contaacts. Is that what the star is all about?
EDIT: the only contacts that i have in PC's gmail are the ones i sent emails to. Other than that, no contacts are sync from phone to gmail.com
might be worth checking at http://www.google.com/contacts instead of GMail, but I shouldn't think it's any different.
Starred contacts are exactly that, contacts you've starred. Fire up the contacts list and tap a contact... top right will be a star.
or maybe because i'm using LG's gmail app? still can't sync to gmail contacts.

When you make a new phone contact it defaults to an LG PC Suite contact. These wont sync with your Gmail account.
You will need to recreate them and select your gmail acc instead of the above and then they will sync with gmail on the web etc.
Absolute pain in the backside I'm afraid but don't think there is another option
If you have to change them all into google contacts from lg suite contacts (if that's your problem) then I found using my phone explore (app and PC software) quite easy.
I exported all my contacts to a csv file and then converted them so google contacts could read them and then imported into google contacts.
Seems quite long winded but seemed quicker to me than copying each contact.

thanks.. i use the app u mentioned and i can sync with gmail contacts. But only problem is for every entry i have two details, one is from gmail contacts and the one is pc suite. So, i stop sync gmail contacts. But i upload all my LG contacts using myphonexplorer. At least now if i want to change to another android phone the contacts are still there.
Well if you have all your contacts in google then just use my phone explorer to delete them off the phone so you are left with just google contacts. Bit risky if you missed one but if you keep an original file with them all in.
This way if you update contacts then they will be auto saved and backed up with google incase something happens to your phone before you have chance to back up your contacts.
Is there any benefit of one method over another? I mean, besides the obvious that Gmail contacts can be sync directly with the phone? Maybe LG's version is same advantage over gmail's?
I just prefer google contacts as i know they are saved 'in the cloud' and if i ever change my phone i know they will work (as ill be sticking with android). Also, if my phone dies on me i know they will have been backed up almost instantly after i updated/changed a contact.
Also I can access my contacts from anywhere if i havent got my phone with me or my phone has run out of battery life. But that is completely personal opinions.
This should be absurdly easy but for some reason is not working for me. I've been saving my accounts to Google when I make a new contact, and I am doing so now as well. When I flash they don't get synced back, even if I use Tibu to restore the SMS data. Also now I made sure Google Contact sync is set up and added a couple of the missing people back and have checked and they still don't show up in my Google contacts. What gives? How do I save all my new contacts to the cloud/Google account? Am I missing something simple?
Check your gmail on a computer to see if they are in the cloud.
You never said if you keep your accounts set to auto sync or not, just spit balling.
Hey,
Sorry guys when I said I made sure my Google contact sync is set up and I checked my Google contacts I actually meant the auto-sync is set up and I checked the Google contacts on my gmail.
Any other ideas?
P.S. It does seem the Tibu restore showed up after I restarted, but still doesn't explain why my contacts wouldn't just sync to Google anyways? I will be getting a new phone pretty soon and obviously am going to need them to be on Google Contacts to put them back onto my new phone, but they aren't showing up
That seems a bit strange. It seems like you're doing things correctly (from what I remember). Well as an alternative you can always export your contacts to your SD as a vCard file and save that on your PC to reinstall your contacts onto your new phone.
Perhaps I'll be able to sort this one out with the group's help.
How to merge/clean/eliminate duplicate contacts under "Phone Contacts" group? Some of the contacts seems to have up to 8 entries or at least it shows 8 times. And they all have the exact information.
If I try to link them, it says "Couldn't Link Contact". Not sure what is going on here.
And to clarify, I use "Phone Contacts" & "Exchange Contacts" only. No Google nor SIM contacts. I've disabled my Exchange account trying to figure this one out, since the Exchange account it is clean and concise.
Any help would be very appreciated!
Thank you!
Okay, upon further research it seems like the best way to go is to have Google Contacts & Exchange Contacts and to drop local Phone Contacts. So I have exported Phone Contacts into vcf file and imported back into my Google account - ironically there were never any duplicates, as I suspected despite the phone showing repeated entries. but this puzzle is beyond my level.
In any case, now I need to globally delete all 850 contact entries I have under "Phone Contacts". I can't seem to find a "Delete All" or "Select All" option to delete local contacts saved on the phone.
Am I missing something here?
TIA!
This keeps on getting better!
Tried following multiple Android forums about simply deleting "Contact" app cache & memory to realize they were referring to "Contacts Storage" app and not the "Contacts" app. Apparently this Sony only gives us access to the Contact app with the Contact Storage app not being visible.
Really? Do I need to wipe the entire phone to simply erase contacts saved on the phone? Even my freakin old Symbian phone had the option to select all contacts...
I also tried in vain to install the useless Sony Companion software but of course, no access to any contacts thru that.
Arghhhh!!!
