Hi Guys,
I have a Samsung Note for Tmobile, the t879 model. I had it rooted and the person installed cwm version 5.5.0.4. I would like to update it to the latest version for my device which seems to be 6.0.4.3 (according to cwm website).
The reason i want to update is because I want to, at some point, install custom jelly bean/kitkat/other rom. I've had some issues attempting to install custom jelly bean rom already.
I tried Rom Manager and my device is not supported, plus i've read several threads that suggest not using rom manager anyway.
I think from what I think i've gathered so far, i have to flash a custom cwm kernel?
Is that correct?
Is there a tutorial somewhere that caters to my device.
Where might I find this kernel, if that's what i need to do.
Can my existing cwm install newer cwm (doubt it but it's worth a shot asking)
Any advice, comments, or general counsel you can offer is appreciated, i'm going on 3 days of searching
You guys are great, I've enjoyed reading your threads and look forward to any help you can offer.
The updated cwm is on the cwm web site, but it is in img format, which means you have to use adb on the command line to overwite your current recovery with the new one.
I took a flashable zip from another phone and replaced the img file inside with the tmobile one and that is what I use. Here it is if you want to use it: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bx_IbXnhPXBJRlFxR0VlSXVhRTQ/edit?usp=sharing
Make sure you know and pay attention to what you are doing, screwing up the recovery will be a bad day.
Jellybean roms use TWRP recovery. http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/113
Some have had better luck with 2.5.0.0, but the latest version should work also.
You need to have a copy of twrp and a copy of cwm on your sdcard so that you can go back and forth between jellybean and kitkat, if that is what you want.
Do your system wipe/factory reset in the recovery that you will use to flash. So going to Kitkat, first reboot into recovery, do a full backup of everything, then flash the cwm zip, then reboot into cwm recovery, then do factory reset, then flash your rom zip, then flash THE CORRECT GAPPS, then you can reboot.
Going back, same thing. Recovery, backup, flash twrp, reboot, recover your backup.
Gapps are important, there are 2 different jellybean gapps one for 4.3 and one for 4.4 Kitkat, be sure you flash the right ones or, you will just get an error, or you will get errors when starting up, either way it won't work. http://wiki.rootzwiki.com/Google_Apps
This thread is where you get the 4.4 Kitkat gapps, full package is fine, just be sure it is the 4.4 one. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2397942
Read the ATT forum also as the device is the same, but don't flash ATT roms unless you are using the patch. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2573315
Lot to read and understand and lots of files to get on your sdcard before you proceed. Good luck.
I can tell your post will be a super helpful resource, thank you for that.

are these my options, basically I can either override cwm with an adb command or flash the rom you shared above? I'm just a little unclear on that?

Yes. Here is the clockworkmod download page. Scroll down for the tmobile note: http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
Look in the "recovery" column, click on the one for tmobile and you get a recovery.img file.
To get the adb instructions to install it, you have to go to the TWRP page for this device: http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/113
"You can use adb or terminal emulator to install the following image:
adb push openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.1-sgh-879.img /sdcard
adb shell dd if=/sdcard/openrecovery-twrp-2.5.x.x of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p22"
So you can do the same thing with the recovery.img from the clockworkmod page.
Now download the zip I gave you, verify that the recovery.img inside is the same as the one on the clockworkmod page. Do an md5 on it to check, pretty sure its the same version. Check the updater script, it is the same command as above. Also, I believe the original post in the "patch" thread that I linked you to has a flashable zip file for clockworkmod as well.
Either of the zips you just flash in your current recovery. Much easier and less room for making a really unfortunate mistake.

I think the adb method is a bit to advanced for me at the moment. I'd be happy if I could just get Jelly Bean going, I'm on ics at the moment.
I will put updating cwm on hold for now. Can you install twrp with odin or goomanager when cwm is installed? Are there any special considerations?
Thanks man
Of course the adb stuff is not the best way to go about it. Just use the flashable zip. Or install goo manager and allow it to install it. Check the twrp link that I gave to you. Instructions are there. I can upload a twrp zip a little later.

depending what ROM you are trying to install, you'll probably need to change your recovery
follow the [necessary] steps here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53270352&postcount=21
if you have other questions post back here, not in the faq sticky

you need twrp 2.7.1.1 for CM11 or use twrp 2.6.3.3/.4 for others roms.

thanks, will update soon, is 2.7.1.1 the currently recommended one, or any 2.7.1.2+ version (due to wiping the os version text) better? is it the by-name support that CM11 needs?
i've never looked at CM roms, and doubt i will ever, so i'd very much appreciate your input

Yes CM11 need a recovery with by-name support. It was introduced in the unofficial 2.7.0.8 build from http://mdmower.cmphys.com/ but this version is no-more available to download.
it was introduced officially in 2.7.1.1 which is the recommended version to use. So higher version from mdmower should also work (2.7.1.2 and 2.7.1.3 beta), I have not tested it myself, i'm not using cm roms neither.
Official 2.7.1.0 for m4, m7, m7spr/m7wls, and m7vzw/m7wlv mistakenly did not include the necessary fstab support, so 2.7.1.1 was released for these devices, addressing the issue.
More recent unofficial builds of TWRP can be found at mdmower.cmphys.com. You'll find source code for all these devices linked there as well.

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but anyway, to the point. I rooted a Xperia SP with towelroot, checked with rootchecker and it was okay, after that I installed CWM and then flashed a ROM and probably CWM changed to TWRP with the ROM. Then I ran some debloater script the ROM maker had done and forgot to flash gapps (lol), or more like debloater script made the phone to reboot, so I let my phone to reboot and try to go back to TWRP and it just doesn't work... Touches won't get recognized. Also I just noticed that the root is gone. Looking for some help here now. Not so used to this stuff.
Things I've tried:
root again with towelroot, didn't work
flash gapps, didn't work
try to install recovery.img again with adb, didn't work(I just may aswell not know how to use adb anyway)
Ask if more information is needed. Thanks! Hope someone could help me.

1.You should have posted this in Q&A section
2.Never use towel root on lollipop because all ROMs are rooted by default.
To enable root Settings->Developer options->Root access->Apps and ADB
3.Dont try debloater script just yet. Use it when you are settled with ROM working.
4.Now what you need to do is
a.Boot into recovery and flash the latest TWRP zip.
b.Reboot into TWRP and wipe everything(data, cache, system but not external)
c.Flash ROM zip and gapps.
Hope this works:good:

I can boot into recovery but it won't recognize touches so I cannot navigate to anywhere in TWRP. Also where to find latest TWRP zip for Xperia SP, since I am looking at TWRP homepage and there is no 2.8.7.0 for Xperia SP. Otherwise it sounds like I learned something new

Since you said TWRP does not recognize touches. Here I present you 2 solutions:
1.Flash stock ftf and start over.
2.Flash FOTA and then flash tangerine kernel with TWRP recovery support via fastboot (v6.3 because newer versions cant be flashed using Fastboot)

Are you able to access TWRP recovery?
If you can you can use my Nandroid backup here. https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95897840722641162
Extract the zip on your desktop. You should get a folder and a zip file.
Copy the folder to the TWRP Backups folder on your device using MTP in TWRP.
Location :- /TWRP/BACKUPS/XXXXXXXXXXX/.
Return to twrp home screen and select restore. Then select my backup. Once that's complete you should be good. Reboot from recovery. TWRP may ask if you want to root the device at this point but it's best to wait until after the updates are installed.
To install the ota you need to flash the Stock recovery back to the device. You will find it in the zip file that came with the backup.
Open the zip file on your pc and extract the recovery.img. Copy it to your fastboot folder and flash it like twrp
Code:
fastboot erase cache
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Once that's done reboot the device and it should be ready to receive OTA updates. You will need to install 4 or 5 updates to bring your device to the latest. So just keep going untill no more are available. Once you've installed all the updates. Reflash TWRP and root the phone :good:

The uploaded file is fine. It's been downloaded and used many times. How are you downloading it? Through your browser or with a download manager?
Newer versions of TWRP recovery allow MTP connection while in twrp. This allows you to copy files to the device in recovery mode just like if you were doing it in Android. I have not used TWRP 3.0. myself so can't confirm it supports MTP. I'll check and get back to you :good:

This is the link for TWRP 3.0:

By the way, thanks for helping I appreciate your effort

I e checked it and your right, there seems to be an issue with the Mirrors. I can upload it again but unfortunately I'm still waiting for my fiber broadband upgrade so it may take some time to upload. I will update you here once it's ready

Ok, I'm downloading it now I'll keep you in touch :highfive: :good:
@Danny201281 By the way, when I entered TWRP before maybe an hour there is something popped up asking I think to be able to do modifications by swiping the arrow or to Keep System Read Only, so I pressed Keep System. I don't know what is it but I hope that I didn't messed up again.

No it's fine for the moment. But if you are going to use custom roms after the update you will want to change it to read/write :good:
Were you able to figure out how to use mtp in twrp to copy the files to the device?
Here's a link to the Stock recovery https://www.dropbox.com/s/iej6thyyjakwgjc/recovery.img?dl=0

Yes, I'm. Now I'm extracting the zip then I'll copy the folder as you said to TWRP/BACKUPS/********* :good:
Updating Progress:
Putting the folder in TWRP/BACKUPS/"In Here" will not work. So I did a backup to see where it goes. After it completed, the Backup saved in TWRP/BACKUPS/SH35********(Device Serial[1])/2016-02-19--11-28-11(Today's Date)/"In Here". Then I replaced this Backup Files with the Nandroid Backup Files.
[1] Device Serial can be found with ADB writing in the command prompt opened from the ADB folder location after connecting the device to the PC and enabling USB debugging "adb devices"
You succeeded -my bro- in restoring my M7 again to normal thank you very much :victory:, but still didn't reach my goal I'll continue now in progressing and will keep you in touch :good:
Updating Progress 1:
After I downloaded the latest OTA, I installed it. M7 rebooted then it went to the recovery that showed up with red triangle, pressed the three combinations Power + Volume Up + Volume Down I got the recovery menu, then I wiped cache partition and the red triangle went to I think green likely circle. Rebooted, tried again it starts to updating then after maybe about a quarter of the updating bar red triangle showed up again saying installation aborted. Rebooted, then tried again -here is my problem from long time- OTA was deleted after I went to check for updates now I'm downloading again and will try one more time. I need your help my brother @Danny201281
Updating Progress 2:
Same. Installation aborted after almost half-quarter of the updating bar then red triangle again. Help is appreciated.
I think I know the solution now, but first the error is same like this except the Package:
Code:
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
Installing update...
L50QCT.01.102.008
Package expects build fingerprint of htc/vodafone_uk/m7:4.4.3/KTU84L/366813.9:user/release-keys
or htc/vodafone_uk/m7:5.0.2/LRX22G/476210.2:user/release-keys;
this device has htc/vodafone_uk/m7:4.4.3/KTU84L/366813.5:user/release-keys.
Installation aborted.
Write host_mode:0 done
The one had this error fixed it and said that he installed the wrong recovery
As you can see that your link OS is 6.09.401.11 but the link you provided OS is 6.09.401.12 maybe thats why the recovery is different from each other. What do you say

Normally such a small difference shouldn't cause a problem but let's try the correct recovery I found a firmware zip download link below ?
Download this firmware zip. https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23991606952612395
Extract it on your pc and use the recovery from it. It will then match your Rom

FINALLY I UPDATED MY M7 :victory:!!
I made a great progress. I opened the OTA that I had from the start -its the same as the latest OTA I was downloading- and opened the firmware.zip and extracted the recovery.img from it, flashed, downloaded OTA again from device, installed it, and succeeded in upgrading to the latest OTA. I recommend for anyone have this problem too to download the latest OTA from device, copy it to desktop, extract recovery.img from firmware.zip inside the OTA, flash, then install update and it will work PERFECTLY :good:
I don't know how to thank you my brother you are GREAAAT :fingers-crossed:. Thank you very very much. All credits goes to @Danny201281 for fixing my device.
If you may could I use more of your services?
If I can how can I install ROMs and how can I S-OFF M7?

Yes you can now flash custom lollipop roms, the process is fairly simple. Choose the Rom you want. Download it and copy it to your devices storage. Reboot TWRP recovery and install the Rom.
To gain s-off your only option is Sunshine app. It's not free to use unfortunately but its very simple and effective.
All other methods have either been patched against by HTC or discontinued by there developers. Rumrunner still works but only for devices with hboot 155 or below. ?
