[Q] OTA update on rooted 23.1.A.0.690 - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have rooted 23.1.A.0.690 on locked bootloader and today i received info about new update 23.1.A.1.28 (20,9 MB size). My question is: can I apply that update over OTA and still keep root?
Thanks in advance!

I can't say for sure, but when I was on 23.1.A.0.726, I did the OTA update to 23.1.A.1.28 and I did not lose root.

As far as I know, you'll have to root again after any official OTA update.

Well, that's inconclusive

I did it, worked fine and didnt lost root.

[Q] Can I recieve OTA updates after rooting?

As I said in the title. I want to root my optimus 4x but I still want to update my phone via OTA, so if I root it, will i be able to update it via OTA?
And if not, will unrooting with SuperSU help? Can anyone answer this for me, please? Thanks in advance!
As far as you stay with your original stock rom, you're still eligible for OTA updates.

4.2.2 OTA to 4.3 ? Root preservation ?

Hi all,
I have a few questions that burn me. Just received the OTA notification that .569 is available (304.4 MB)
I am running .67 with stock recovery, root and phone encryption. Will those be preserved if i OTA update ?

AFAIK root is lost and recovery is rewritten. I don't use phone encryption but I guess it is ok (or it would be stupid of Sony).
My experience has always been that OTA updates break root, and most of the time you wont be able to get it back until there is an exploit for the new firmware
4.3 OTA update will take away root and you will be unable to root under 4.3 directly.
You have to use the root methods shown as below(root under 4.2-flash another recovery-flash pre-root 4.3).

OTA left my root as it is. Check my post, how I did it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=50052461&postcount=36
This was the first OTA that broke my root, even with supersu in survival mode.
I updated ota from 4.2 to 4.3 and kept root.

How big is that OTA update?
Try, if you can flash it it could work and you could actually preserve root, maybe even recovery but in 99% of cases you'll get error.
OTA update can't be flashed on rooted device (but, as I said, there were few times it actually worked if it's small, few mb update)
But this is update from 4.4.2 to 4.4.4 so I doubt it'll work.

OTA updates with root are fine, but you may well lose root, just as you would flashing a FTF or updating via Pccompanion.
The issue with OTA updates is if you have an unlocked bootloader.

That's not correct mate.
Try to downgrade, root and install recovery then try to update via OTA - you'll fail.
Only one or two OTA updates worked on rooted Z1.
I have rooted Z1 with locked bootloader and OTA will always said - error while trying to flash, update your device through pc companion.
I'm 100% certain...

OK, the few times I tried it I had no problem, but I have only ever done it a couple of times..
It's 154.5 Mb, my bootloader is still locked only my device is rooted so I will go ahead give it a try and see what happens if it fails or I lose the root I can again downgrade and root right?
Yes, but you can also just root the FW anyway

If you want to update, then download FTF. You will loose root. Or use NUTS pre rooted rom. If you want to root yourself, look over to cross development and use easy root tool v8. Then also download nuts xzdual for locked boot.

Yeah, Indian version was delayed by a month or so.
But I guess some regions haven't even received the 4.4.2 update yet.
Just got the Update Notice (C5502) via PCC here in Taiwan. But it failed to move forward after software download... Will give it another try later...

Sorry to be a noob, here. But will I have to unroot my phone to get it via OTA or even if I had to flash it via flashtool?

No need to unroot. You will get the update even if rooted.
But if you have unlocked the bootloader, you will have to relock it.
not yet on Indian c5502 XZRs

I flashed it and now I lost root. Damn. Waiting for towelroot to update
Is this ZR's last update?
Since this update is released 18 months after ZR entered the market, is it the final firmware?

Probably Yes.
Unless Sony decides to be generous enough to provide us 5.0 update. But the chances are bleak.

During the previous migration to 4.4.2 I got the notification and was able to download the 250 something MB OTA but it failed to install. Had to do it with PC Companion.
Towelroot but locked bootloader.

I flashed the update via flashtool and lost my root Towelrooted, but the developer has stopped developing and now he works for Google. So no more updates. Will have to wait for a proper root in a few weeks now.

You can? Great!
Missing the KitKat SD Card fix, which I had while I was rooted on the 10.5.A.230 firmware. Thanks a ton, in advance
From 4.3: Do I need to upgrade to 4.4.2 first or will I receive 4.4.4 directly?
