TuneIn App - Android Auto General

So I got the Pioneer 8100NEX setup last night. After flashing OxygenOS on my phone (BlissPop wouldn't work due to the DPI issue) I am up and running with Android Auto. However, when going through the music app option all I have is Google Music. The other main app I use for tunes and general listening is TuneIn which, while installed and apparently should work, is not showing up. I searched the settings for TuneIn and didn't notice anything obvious. Is this a Pioneer setting I am going to wait for or am I missing something obvious? Thanks!

I realize this is a dusty post, but did you ever get TuneIn to appear in AA? I'm having the same issue on my Nexus 6P.

Allow me to spray some Pledge/Endust on this topic as well. I have a Moto X Pure Edition running TruPureXMM 2.6 and I just purchased a 2016 Honda Civic EX with Android Auto built-in. Everything about it works great: Maps, Hangouts, Play Music with voice search, the whole thing. EXCEPT: similar to the posters above, when touching the Audio button to see other apps, the only app listed is Google Play Music. I should also note that I have multiple Auto-compatible audio apps in addition to TuneIn Radio Pro; I also have BeyondPod, Pandora, and iHeartRadio. None of them appear. Google support is non-existent at this point, which is a little unsettling as more and more carmakers are offering stock options with Android Auto.
I'm not any kind of expert, but I'm wondering if this is a side effect of having a rooted and/or custom ROM installed. Mine is stock based for my phone but it is rooted and I see that the OP had a custom ROM as well. I don't know what you are running @monorailmedic. Any information or assistance from someone who has experienced this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Do you have any adblock app running on your phone?

Curiouser and curiouser. I will mention that I tried disabling USB Debugging and that did not have any effect.

Disabling AdAway had no effect. However, I believe I have resolved the issue.
I mentioned that I have TuneIn Radio Pro, but I did not mention that I got it through the Amazon App Store rather than Google Play. (It was a free app of the day many moons ago.) I installed the regular version of TuneIn from the Play Store and...voila, it appeared in Auto. Same thing with the other apps - I had installed them outside of Google Play, and apparently Auto doesn't like that. Reinstalling through the Play Store got me up and running.
I don't know if that scenario is also your issue @monorailmedic, but mine has been resolved this way.

I too got the Pro version from Amazon years ago when it was a freebie. I'll try downloading the version from the Play Store in the morning. I wrote to TuneIn today, so if this is the issue, it'd be swell if they provided me the key to the newer pro version via the Play Store.

In fact, I mentioned a possible block because IMHO the apps for Android Auto can't work if they aren't able to contact the Google Play store for license activation.

Interesting... Besides license validation of protected apps (which the dev controls) this is the first instance I recall hearing where sideloaded apps won't work.
Developers of AA compatible apps can't just sideload either, even just for testing. App has to go through Google Play as a special AA beta test.
Google requires that all AA compatible apps (and their updates) be tested by them and approved for not being distracting. This is part of their protection for that. Sideloaded or Amazon etc. apps can't be guaranteed to have gone through this testing. (Actually an MD5 of the APK or similar could be done, but that could be abused on rooted devices and Google prefers everything goes through Play anyway.)

So, how are you all using TuneIn? I've been immensely disappointed that there's no favorites/presets list available via AA. Nor is there even the recent stations list available. So, how in the world do you access the stations you want? The lists that are available seem really truncated and have only strange channels I've never heard of. I was able to use voice commands once but now that isn't working and one of my stations wasn't accessible that way either. So, the whole app seems to be essentially useless to me via the AA interface. Bluetooth streaming still works, but defeats the purpose and of course then there's no access to any of the other aspects of AA.

I too have the pro version from Amazon, which i got for free. In order to get it to work with Android Auto you have to install it using google play as the vendor. Same goes with other apps that you sideload
1. Install Tunein Pro from Amazon Store.
2. Save the apk installer file using es Explorer. hxxp://android.stackexchange.com/questions/75360/is-it-possible-to-backup-apk-from-an-installed-application
3. Uninstall Tunein Pro
4. Reinstall using ADB hxxps://pixplicity.com/setting-install-vendor-debug-app/
I tested it and it works

You can also "unblock" non-play store apps in AA. Open AA on your phone, then go to "information" then tap many times on the upper bar... it will reveal "developer options". Now tap on 3-dot menu and set developer mode. You should see more apps through car headunit.

[Q] "Couldn't prepare instant mix. Please try again." =(

Hey,
Looked around and didn't see anything on this so I'm posting.
I get this error whenever I try and use the 'Instant Mix' in the play music app. Honestly, I don't care about it but it seems to need to work right in order for me to use the 'Touchless control' to start playing music using my voice...which would be pretty cool!...if it worked.
I read on another site to add a payment method through google play but that didn't work.
any help would be appreciated! Thanks all!

Noticed this as well. My friends Nexus 5 seems to handle the "play this" command quite well. My moto x seems to look for a instant mix and play it.
Tried the "play this" and the same thing happens...well, what happens is that the app just closes and go backs to the home screen.
"Couldn't prepare instant mix. Please try again." <- A bug I've been trying to fix for a long time...
I too have been frustrated with this error, but it didn't start with my Moto X. I also had this problem with my previous phone, a Nexus S, yet there is a surprising lack of information on the error when googled.
For troubleshooting, here is my environment:
AT&T Moto X, official 4.4, rooted
Google play music up to date (as of 12/13/2013)
all music (about 6 gigs) is on the phone, none on google music cloud. All songs have good album, artist, genre, albut art, etc 'tags'
I tried rebooting and clearing data on google play music
I verified my location and signed up on google.com/music yesterday, added a few songs and sync'd, but that did not help
Sometimes my "Im feeling luck mix" works, sometimes it doesn't. My library -> songs -> shuffle always works fine
Does anyone get the error with their music stored on google's music cloud?

I have most of the music stored on google play music in the cloud and some locally on my phone. When attempting to create an instant mix, only cloud stored music seems to work. Locally stored files give an error. Also making and loading instant mixes seem to only work with an active internet connection, even if the cloud files are set to have offline access.
So no ideas?...=(...no one else having this problem?...or no one cares about using voice to play music? Maybe a good music player that supports voice? I found 'Clean Music' but not a very robust player.
Well you could try this if you have xposed installed. Its a module that let's you say "play music" and it will just start playing whatever was loaded in play music previously. Works for me.

Sounds interesting...do I have to root or anything? I'm reading through the framework thread and looks like there is a risk of a soft brick...=(
Well you have to be rooted to install the xposed framework and as with anything, there is a chance of a soft brick. Look at some of the other threads to find info on rooting. Works great for me!

Instant mix
Hi,
I've got the same problem on my nexus 5, and what I've found is this:
- When you try to start an instant mix when you've got an internet connection, it'll only play music stored online. (so it won't start if you've got nothing stored in the cloud)
- When you start an instant mix without internet access, it will work (but of course only the music stored on your device will play)
The voice commands only work when you've got an internet connection, so I'm guessing it won't start an instant mix with music stored on your device either? I haven't been able to try it with music stored online, cause I don't have a valid payment method for the service..
So I think it will work when you try the voice command for music stored online?
Can anyone verify that?
I just tried this as I do have a couple songs I've purchased through Google Play...but it didn't seem to work. I went to a song not on the device and selected "Start Instant Mix" and got the same error. I then turned on Airplane Mode, went to a song on the device and tried and same error. =(

Can't start instant mix
Hmm..
I've read somewhere that you need more than a few songs stored online to be able to start an instant mix, so maybe it's that..But I don't really think that's the problem though..that would be stupid
Does starting an "I'm feeling lucky mix work" with you? (online/offline?)
Can you start a specific song (stored online of course) with voice commands?
why o why do they install it on all nexus devices (and more?), when it doesn't even work properly?
Manually update Google play music
Although this thread has been inactive for a bit, the problem for me at least had not resolved itself. After months of ignoring it finally decided to look for a solution. So I'll post here if anyone else still has issues.
The solution is simple but annoying. Had to manually update the player. This should have happened automatically, through play store app but for some reason my Moto X was supposedly up to date on some version of 5.5 when a simple googling session says that play music had been past 5.6 for a while. So anyway I downloaded the latest copy i could find (5.6.1623P.1416251), it installed fine, and now the problem seems to have gone away even with mobile data enabled, which is required anyway for touchless control.
I had nothing online and was getting this error. There's a 'downloaded only' option in the settings that I checked and that brought instant mix back to life for me, although now called shuffle, so would seem to be an online problem I think
I had same problem,
What you need to do is to go on play store > apps > my apps > all > google play music > update
v5.5.1623P adds ability to search public playlists
now u can say "ok google now play some music" and see what will happen
Use the cloud

All you have to do is delete all your songs from your phone... use the internet from a computer... and upload your entire catalog to the cloud using the Google Play Music website/app. You can put up to 20,000 songs there for free. (That's a lot of albums!!) Everything about the app is better after you do this. You can use Chromecast, all album art shows up, etc.
I just want to point out how stupid it is that this is what you have to do to make this product work. Why can't we just put our our music on an SD card and get the same results? Maybe in a few years after they update the app 5,000 more times.

I faced the same problem, and what I did was I manually updated the Google Play Music app.
In the Google Play Store>My Apps>All , search the Google Play Music and I found out that it had an update but strangely the notifications never shown automatically. So I updated the app and now I can fire up music from my moto 360.
ONE SOLUTION
I haven't seen this solution posted anywhere, so here is what fixed it for me:
Play Music App -> Menu -> toggle Downloaded only
After toggling it started creating instant mixes.
If you are playing local music only, just switch the switch in the app, which says "Downloaded only" and instant mix will work !

SiriusXM app now compatible with Android Auto

Just in case anybody here isn't aware, SiriusXM has enabled Android Auto for their app, starting with version 4.3.0.
A little heads up.....there is some server side magic going on here. I hadn't been offered an update through Play Store, so I went to APKMirror and downloaded 4.3.0, which is the AA compatible version. AA did not work for me. After a bit of frustrated tinkering, I went back to what was being offered by Play Store, version 4.2.0. Two days ago I was offered the 4.3.0 update, and now it works.
So if Sirius doesn't want you to have it, you won't get it by simply installing the APK.
Sirius working on AA is a huge plus for me. A little buggy, as are all Sirius app releases.
any apps that you download from other than GP, you have to use adb pm install from computer, and assign the app vendor to google play, then only the apps work with AA2.9

Fire 10 HD 2017 problem with YouTube TV GPS / location services

I picked up a Fire 10 HD 2017 version, and followed guides here to add Google Play (and other 3 associated APK files), which works great. - I was able to installed several Google apps and other apps from the Google Play store.
However, I have hit a roadblock with YouTube TV (not regular YouTube) - Google's streaming TV service. They have a free trial if anyone wants to test this out, but I get an error screen on launch that says "We can't determine your device's location" - and I can't get it to load. All the settings for Location-Based Services are toggled on (overall and specific to the app, and all apps). I have tried with option for Google Play as a Device Administrator both checked and unchecked. Google Maps detects my location and works fine. I am not running any VPN or similar apps, so this is purely GPS based. Tried to use a fake GPS location app (and allow that in developer settings) but that didn't help.
From what I have read, others have had GPS problems - some sort of conflict between the Amazon GPS and the Google GPS expectations. Something about "AGPS" being limited in some ways on the Fire 10 HD.
Has anyone seen this issue and found a workaround or solution? Could be for a related app maybe. I was also unable to get streams to play in the Chrome browser, which would be a fine workaround, so I need something to work here. One of the main purposes of a tablet for me will be YouTube TV. Thanks - appreciate any help.
I'm having the same issue with the Hulu app and the Maps app that comes with the Fire HD 10. I installed Google Play Store and Google Maps (using the APKs like you). Google Maps didn't work at first, however after DISabling the tablet's location services and trying Google Maps again, I got a prompt for enabling current location for Google to which I clicked on yes. Now Google Maps is working!! Sadly, the generic Maps app and Hulu are still not working. Have you had any more luck?
P.S. after speaking with an Amazon tier 2 support rep, they said they are going to get in touch with a developer and get Hulu working. I'll believe it when I see it!

Android Auto - no sound from google play music

Hey
So I took delivery of my new Vauxhall Crossland X with Android Auto yesterday. Its great to have a headunit that will work with android auto. However I have a very annoying issue.
Nav, calls and spotify work without issue. However I have recently switched to google play music. Now the app opens and when you press play the track starts progressing and you can see the time line moving, however no sound is coming through.
If I change to spotify it works without issue and I can listen to music, albeit in a lesser sound quality (in my opinion) .
Has anyone else found a fix for this issue?
Appreciate your help.
Best wishes
Andy
AFAIK there's sadly no solution for this yet. I can't post links yet because I'm haven't posted much yet, but if you google for "Play music not working on android auto" you'll find a thread in the Google product forums.
Seems to be a Huawei specific problem...
It most certainly is a Huawei issue for which they have no answer. My issue isn't with Android Auto but the Google play music app is glitchy on my car stereo. The album art is from the first song that played the first time I connected the phone to my car and it hasn't changed since. The native music app and spotify have no such issue. I think it has to do with the lack of integration. The play music app's colour should match the album art in the drop down (since Oreo 8.0) but it's just a big orange box. There's definitely something wrong with Huawei's play music.

Installing equalizer from Play store (equalizer by Smart Android apps) make sure eq is ON, and stays on, skip to next song and now Android Auto works.
But first:
Remove and clear data from Android Auto, reboot
Clear all Bluetooth devices from car, and under system in your car remove Android Play devices.
Clean fresh set-up.

Wow, this finally seemed to fix it. I installed the app and reset the Android Auto settings and it's now working again. Thanks a lot!
I gave up before seeing this last post - I sold my p20 pro and bought a pixel 2 xl - have to say it worked straight away and the sound quality on android auto is better too. Gutted Ive lost the p20 pro camera as that was amazing but its nice to have a clean stock phone again. Lets hope the pixel 3 xl has the 3 camera setup that my p20 pro had.

EQ option turns on automatically everytime I open Google music
Same issue with Oneplus 6 and Vivo V9. Apart from plethora of issues this issue is the most annoying.
Other issues- Music stops playing and then suddenly resume from beginning of song, Blank screen, no voice control(it used to work before), Whatapps messages are not read(used to work before)
When you try and send a message through voice does it go "uh, something went wrong"?

Android auto quits after starting music

Hi there,
strange thing... When I say "ok Google" followed by the instruction to play some music with Play Music, Rocket Player or even Player Pro, it starts the music but sends Android Auto to the background. I have to click the icon again to restart Android Auto. Ist this a bug or a feature?
Running Auto on OnePlus 5t, Oreo. No display mirroring, using it straight on my phone.

All i can give you is possible reasons why it kicks out or gets stuck, there's more reasons but they are all
more random then these I've posted below...
---
if issue is with AA app...
hell if i know i don't use that thing, since googles latest updates (earlier this year)
killed the compatibility of using it to serve emu for HU....
for that area you'll have to await someone elses answers. sry

if issue is on HU....
Make sure your clock is set to correct time/date, and also make sure you've a correctly updated version of
google play store, and other services by goo. this is leading to numerous crashes(freezing units) this you would need to uninstall the application(s) and re-install/update, or reformat...
there was as well a strange bug, with SystemUI, that lead it to crash (search google play for that fix) ...
ofc could be just simply over-heating since manufacturers of h/w seemed to over look heat sinking or device fans
for internal cooling... these devices were not very well made for there prices... ive got a Hizpo px3/5 both needed h/w modifications.
